    Hi, I was a breeder of Chinese Shar Pei for many years, so thought I'd offer you a little new pup advice. The puppies have to stay above 90°, or you will run the risk of losing them. If you really want her in the whelping box, move it closer to the place shes laying, and take the straw shes been laying in, and put it in the box... the box doesnt look like it has enough. If you want her to stay in the box, put a gate over the opening, that latches... I would also put blankets over the box to make it warmer... if you're going to leave her where she is, I'd hang a blanket over the fence, and tack it up on the other wall, like a roof, to keep in the warmth. Put a couple hay bales to cover the end behind her. The other thing is, she will not be hungry enough to leave her babies for a couple days... she just ate 10 placentas... natures way of giving the Mom nurishment, so they dont have to leave the den for a couple days... if you want to feed her, give her warm food, with warm water in it, and take it over to her, so she can eat it without getting up. Since she has 10 pups, and only 8 teets, you are going to have to watch them. If you see any looking smaller, or weaker, you may have to take the bigger pups out for an hour or two, and let the little ones nurse, or just them in 2 groups regularly... it will take her some time in between feedings to build up more milk, so, leave a space of abt at least hour or 2 before you put the 2nd group on her... The easiest way to do that, is tie a little piec of colored yarn on each pup, either 2 colors for the groups, or a diff color for each pup. If she doesnt have enough milk, you will have to supplement with bottles... looks like you have some nice pups, there... good luck to you all!

      But the breed of dog you raised is not the same breed that they have these dogs live outside their livestock guardian dogs, and on a different site this families, livestock guardian dog, has puppies, and the puppies are outside because the mama won’t leave them in as long as the puppies are chubby, which they look like they are I think everything will be fine and I know about breeding animals too, because I bread English mastiffs

      GOOD Advice....leave her and her puppies alone, where they are for now. Not worth the chance of her going outdoors to do her business, and then coming back in to hide her pups from you. She trusts you competely so don't betray that trust by moving her precious babies!!!

    Just draft proof the area she chose to keep her pups in. I see light coming in the crack behind her on the right. I wouldn’t stress her trying to move them again. The louder the pups are, the closer to them she will stay. If she gets up to use the potty they will scream for her when they get cold. Nature’s way. Ours are Great Pyrenees, our heart breed. Please keep us updated on the herd of dogs! ❤ From the mountains of Virginia. ❤

    Oh my gooosh! I dk why people can't leave animals alone?? She was trying to get away from people, the lights, the noise and the heaters. Let her have them where she wants to. She probably got hot. She will keep those puppies warm but giving birth is hard work. If dogs aren't comfortable they can stop the process and thats probably why she waited to have the second one. I know its wonderful to be there and see the miracle but.... just give her some space.

    The reason she might not want her puppies in the box is because she still wants to guard her livestock. So the box might not be ideal for a livestock dog. She just wants to have her puppies close but also wants to be able to do her other job also.

      I was thinking along those lines too. She can't see out around her as well while in the box, not only the herd, but for protection for herself & the babies as well. It's hard to know, but it isn't hard to understand she wants them where she wants them! She trusts you, Kevin, 100%, & she seems to call you to check on her when she know you're near. Even with moving the babies, she never got upset with you touching her puppies. Thanks for sharing this experience with all of us.❤

    Kevin, you just have to trust Cora’s instinct with where she wanted to have the puppies. Perhaps the smaller space gives her comfort.

  • @monroewittner6364
    @monroewittner6364 8 месяцев назад +52

    From the Kennel Club site.
    "In your whelping box, don't use hay, wood shavings or straw, as these can damage the puppy's skin and eyes. Also, don't have lots of small blankets or pieces of cloth as the puppies may crawl underneath them and either be smothered by them or may be crushed by their mum - one large piece of vetbed is ideal."
    You can use a couple of old blankets covered with a sheet. Then just change the sheet and the top blanket at the end of the day. Wash and dry and you're ready for the next day. Straw can poke and straw dust isn't good for puppy lungs. Staw is ok for livestock, but puppies are not like goats, horses, or cattle. Straw works for them. Please use "best practices".

    • @mountainsage02
      @mountainsage02 8 месяцев назад +5

      i used sheets and blankets and swapped them out. its easy at first because mom will lick the little poos they make while they are nursing at first.

    • @monroewittner6364
      @monroewittner6364 8 месяцев назад +14

      I see a photo of the puppies on straw. That's why I'm concerned. They shouldn't be until they are big enough to run around on it. But even then, the straw will be a problem for them. They will be pooping everywhere, but it will be harder to see and clean up, and keep them out of the poop and clean. Also, if you show puppies on straw, others less experienced will think that it's ok, and it's not really. You're in a position to educate people in "best practices" instead of harmful practices. Great for you if you have already changed out the straw to washable. Let everyone see the new version of the whelping box with sheets and blankets.

    Really cute and healthy looking puppies! I was very touched with how the black dog was trying to get those goats away from her while she was in labor, very smart dog he even put himself between those black goats and the box. Please don’t move the puppies anymore but try to block them in that area she could hurt the puppies trying to move them. She won’t stay in the box because she does not feel safe in the box she feels trapped in there with the goats and other dogs she’s very upset. I hope you keep the other animals out of her space. I think it’s important to handle the pups check them daily to make sure one is not losing weight the smaller ones sometimes can’t fight the bigger ones for meals if you see this you might have to make sure the runt gets to nurse. She needs to extra meals now she is nursing it’s taking a lot out of her body she should get three small meals a day for now being a large breed she could get bloat so feeding at least 2 x a day. Organ meat is good for her as an add on to her meals we used to cook chicken livers, hearts and add to kibble and the eggs are good. Remember she is just like a human with a new baby you want quiet peaceful environment.

    As for the colors of the puppies remember they are not only combo of Cora & Leeske they are also part of Cora & Leeske parents. Also their colors may change as they get older.
    - also remember they all must be vaccinated & weened & on food before you sell them.
    God Bless.
    Thank again for making all of us part of your family

    I love that the other animals wanted to be with her to keep her company. You moved some of them when you arrived, but I imagine she felt not so alone with her friends there with her. Looking at the video, I think she probably moved to get closer to them.

    Congratulations Cora and Leeske and family. Cora will be happy to allow you to hold and pet her puppies. She trusts you, and the more you pet them and hold them later on the better they will be for their next family even if they are farm dogs they still need to be good with people, a lot of farms have children and need to have trustworthy pets, especially when they are so large. Good luck to you all!

    You have to understand the other animals are showing comfort to her. She is not showing anger towards them. Let them go. They all live together 24 hrs 7 days a week. Honest they know what their doing. Don't keep changing the animals away that will cause undue stress.

    I found runts to be a rare during my 30 yrs of breeding. No runts is a sign mom had good nutrition and plenty of room in her womb. Block off that opening so there isn't a draft on those pups. Don't mess with them because that may cause a new mom to walk away. In the colder temps keep watch the pups are staying warm and raise the ambient temp with a heat lamp but remember, puppies aren't like chicks. They can't move away if too warm so simply keep the ambient temp raised as needed with blankets, boards or what ever you have to help the lamp keep some heat in there but don't put the lamp directly on them. Mom needs a lot more calories and a lot more water and have it so it cannot be spilled and she has access to both at all times. When those pups reach 4 weeks you can start introducing soft food. Don't wean before 8 weeks. These large breeds are genetically engineered to grow fast and they not only need mom's milk so they have great bone growth, they also need the socialization they get from each other and mom teaching them what is rude and acceptable behavior. Always tempting to wean when the pups eat good but in the wild they'd stay on mom at least 12 weeks. The longer you are able to go to keeping the litter together, towards 12 weeks old, even if weaned by then, the better the pups will do socially and psychologically through out their lives. I never sold puppies before 12 weeks. And I only sold to people who could give me references and would sign a contract to give me back (no refund) the dog if it didn't work out for them. I only ever had two come back but I took those dogs back without delay or question (both times were health issues for the owners). It kept those dogs out of the rescue system. That's what responsible breeders do. When they go to the vets for vaccines, keep litter and mom together in the vehicle and the vet's office. Dogs really don't step on their pups much. They are really quite careful. Get the parvo shots done as soon as vet says they are old enough. That is the most important one to do because puppies have no internal fat to draw on if they get parvo so they die. Adult dogs can survive parvo because they have internal fat around their organs to help them survive the starvation phase of the disease. Most of all, have fun watching them grow and change as they do.
