    Kairi could turn Sora's heart back from being a heartless because as a Princess of Heart she is a being of pure light and one of the abilities that being of pure light have is to purify and dispell the darkness.
    Repliku exists to show the duality in Riku in a more physical way. He also is there as one of the examples that show the conflict of beings that are "shadows" of other people, something that is a big part of this series.
    Don't worry, non of this is a spoiler.

    I think you should have mentioned that, while traversing Castle Oblivion, Sora entered a world he could not actually remember, and that he had not been to in Kingdom Hearts 1 (Twilight Town). Minor thing, but worth mentioning, I think. Besides that, great recap!

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, the world from "the other side of [Sora's] heart" seems like a mysterious mystery that's worth mentioning, particularly considering it a) breaks the pattern and b) appears at the end of this recap video...

    I'm so happy this video exists. I just started the series, got through the first game, and didn't really understand it. Went on to CoM and about 30 mins in decided I absolutely hated the card based gameplay. Every interaction was a chore, and I just wasn't having fun. Went to look up a story synopsis of CoM and got this. The story summary I was looking for, and a clarification of KH1. This is perfect. I do have one question though, that hopefully someone can answer.
    At the end of KH1, Ansem said the door lead to darkness, but Sora knew it went to Light, and it banished Ansem.
    But then, Sora and crew needs to close the door, because it actually does lead to darkness??? Then where'd the light come from? Was Ansem right? This point in particular is confusing the hell out of me.

    I really enjoy your story mode playthroughs. I'm actually not a big fan of Let's Plays with the Completionist being the only youtube show of that kind I regularly watch. I really like watching someone play the game but comment more on the story and characters than on what is immediately happening on screen, and Kingdom Hearts was one of my favorite games in middle school so that helps too. Really looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 2. It's the last game I played in the franchise and is still my favorite.

  • @1224chrisng

    6:28 Correction: Sora went to 12F, where those egg memory erasing things are, immediately after Larxene and Marluxia's death, as indicated by Zexion; Riku fights with Ansem and leaves with Mickey well after Zexion's death; therefore, Sora goes to 12F before Riku leaves the castle.
    I can't find any more mistakes, so Good Job.

    • @PlayFramePlus
      @PlayFramePlus  5 лет назад +9

      Yeah, I swapped the order for better information flow and clarity, since the conclusion of Sora's journey through the castle is way more immediately relevant to the start of KH2 than Riku's (and since the relative order in which they reach their destinations isn't very important in the long run).

    • @LashknifeTalon
      @LashknifeTalon 5 лет назад +6

      The only way I can think it's relevant at all is making it clear that Riku is aware of Sora's comatose state and is an active player in the events that transpire while Sora is asleep (with that knowledge).

    Oh man nice summary! Touching on the weird details that makes it confusing, while keeping it lean enough to keep the main plotline straightforward. In some circles, the story of Kingdom Hearts gets no respect nowadays, for some reason. But I think it still holds up as great. With all its complexity, childishness, campy dialogue, absurdity, and big emotions. It's all part of the charm in creating this delicious stew of adventure that's completely unique. There ain't no story like Kingdom Hearts.

I played 1 and 2, and started enough of Chain of Memories to think it was just a retread of 1, but not enough to realize it had the Organization subplot. After (the first chapter of) Chain of Memories left a bad taste in my mouth for the unnumbered "spinoffs", I haven't done anything else. I do look forward to watching a playthrough of the others, now that I understand the lore implication they have, but without having the time to give them each a proper playthrough myself.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 5 лет назад +1

      Coded is, by all accounts, even worse than CoM; re:Coded (the version you're likely to be able to play - I'm not going to say you definitely can't find a playable Coded around, but I wouldn't know where to look for one) is still a retread of KH1 in similar fashion to CoM, but has some twists, and a playable epilogue of sorts which has some crucial elements for setting up KH3's story (and also some details in DDD).
      Birth By Sleep is a full-fledged game, and it would be fair to call it Kingdom Hearts 0 if not for the fact that you're not playing as Sora, and it was originally released on PSP rather than Playstation 3.
      358/2 Days is in a similar vein to re:Coded and CoM in that it sticks to existing worlds, but the story is a lot less focused on hitting the same beats in those worlds, rather exploring them from a different angle. And the overall story also bridges the gap between KH1 and KH2 in a different way than CoM, what with being the story of a young man named Roxas and all...
      DDD competes with BBS for "secretly a main game" status - its Disney worlds are mostly new to the series, the enemies are yet another new type of being, and, while the story also serves the purpose of depowering Sora ready for KH3 (as CoM did for KH2), it does advance the series plot a fair bit too - and sets the stage for what appears to be KH3's main plot, tying together threads from BBS, 358/2 and re:Coded.
      0.2 is barely a game - it's a mix of KH3 tech demo and patch for a potential plot hole in KH1, and only takes a few hours to play through.
      Gameplay wise, CoM is farthest from the action-RPG of KH1, though none of them play it entirely straight, with various forms of experimentation with the character progression. The depth and complexity of the systems mostly happen in the menus or through highly intuitive aspects like positioning in 3D space rather than CoM's card-based nonsense where you have to keep track of the values of your opponent's current and next cards, any sleights they're building, any sleight you're building, and the cards in your own deck in order to either land your own attack, or break theirs as appropriate (all while positioning in 3D space and possibly evading attacks).

      Before anybody even starts, the name makes sense if you think about it. Birth by Sleep is a prequel to Kingdom Hearts 1, so it could be considered "Kingdom Hearts Zero". This game is a sequel to Birth by Sleep, but still takes place mostly before Kingdom Hearts 1, so it needed a number between Zero and One, hence 0.2 for it's number. It and Birth by Sleep count as the prologue to the series, and it's the final chapter to the prologue, hence "0.2: Final Chapter Prologue". It's no more confusing than something like "Star Wars Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones". It's a number and a subtitle.
      If anything, Star Wars should be more confusing because they actually changed the Episode numbers to make room for the prequels. It just happened a very long time ago, so people got used to referring to "A New Hope" as Episode 4. But this series is the one that gets shit on for the naming structure.

    • @rmsgrey

      You could even make a case for Union X being the second game in the series after X - I've not played either, but I'm told there are some significant changes to the plot from one to the other, so you could argue that they're separate games.

    One thing that might've been worth mentioning from the original for later. As it turns out, the keyblade was actually Riku's or, at least, he can use it, and he takes it away from Sora for a time but it seems to eventually choose Sora considering Riku's run in with the darkness, which is also the reason why Sora ended up with it on the island.
    Another big thing, Mickey also has a keyblade, though not the same one from the events of the game.
    Another thing from Chain of Memories that you kinda spoiled.
    You said that Riku and Mickey left the Castle with DiZ, and while that is true, there isn't really anything about the scene that implies that DiZ went with them. This is fairly important to a handful of things in KHII and 358/2 Days.

    A story well told. I just wonder one thing - Zexion (?) refers to the Ansem remnant in Riku as being very similar to someone he refers to as "The master" 🤔 (because of this weird "darkness smell")

      It's foreshadowing for a reveal that happens about halfway through KH2.

    this doesnt answer my biggest question - why every door in castle oblivion is made from white chocolate

    I always thought that Diz was the one who brought Riku to castle oblivion

      They actually did make that clear in a conversation in Chain of Memories. After DiZ is caught impersonating Ansem, Riku figures that DiZ was the one who brought him there, which DiZ confirms. Motives however aren't really known.

    Thanks for this, playing KH1 and CoM HD on PC and they keep on crashing after I save. Decided to skip them, KH2 seem to work fine so I'll be playing it next. Neat, thanks!

      what exactly here is supposed to be wrong in your opinion?? apart from one name, then again that name was used as cover so that's fine too in a way

      ***Spoiler alert***
      That name replacememt is used so much in the summary it and the game that I feel the wording of my comment is valid

    Every recap of CoM fails to mention the fact that, although Axel was taking out "traitors" of the Organization, he still eliminates Vexen and Zexion who are blatantly loyal to the Organization, and their plan is to make the Organization stronger. Am I suppose to be confused by this???

    Is the content of this video enough to go on to KH2 and have a decent idea of what’s going on? I only ask because I know there are a few other games that chronologically come before KH2 that aren’t included in this summary (e.g. Birth by Sleep, 358/2 Days).
    EDIT: Actually, I just realized those additional games I mentioned came out after KH2, so I’m assuming they are not necessary to understand it. Also, upon rewatching the video, the guy addresses this exact point at the beginning. D’oh. Damned crazy-ass KH series got into my head for a minute there.

    Hey Dan great job! And carrie thanks to you too!
    As I side note, is this how your voice, highly precise and well timed, always sounded before speeding up? The jump from your extra credits voice to your true one was understandably odd, but this narration voice is just different enough from your let's play voice to pick it up

    Love the Story Recap. Is it green text = Dan, pink = Carrie? As in, Dan edited this one himself?

    I am so late to the Kingdom Hearts party but this was so helpful to me as I tried to get into CoM but the combat system is just awful. This way I can continue my way through the series without missing anything. Thank you!
