So Henry broke with the Church.
Mr Curve Man: I don't know much about the kings Horrible Histories: Would you like a little ditty about all the English kings and queens since William I that there have been? And to answer one of your questions, there's a poem about the six queens that goes - divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. Anne (Boleyn) was the first queen to be beheaded and Katherine (Howard) was the other queen to be beheaded. They were both beheaded for their promiscuity, Anne cheating on Henry and Katherine doing the do out of wedlock, while Catherine (of Aragon) was divorced because Henry wanted to be with Anne (Boleyn) and Anne (of Cleves) was divorced because Henry thought she was ugly. Finally, Jane (Seymour) died just days after giving birth to her son and Katherine (Parr) outlived Henry. Couple of weird things that you'll notice about his marriages: half of his wives died (Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Katherine Howard) while their marriage was still active, half of his wives were related (the same three previously mentioned, they were all cousins/second-cousins), half of his wives had children (Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour), and half of his wives were called C/Katherine
Unfortunately the “crimes” that Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were executed for probably weren’t true. I mean poor Katherine was groomed soooo NOT HER FAULT and Anne was condemned for sleeping with her brother which was a lie that Henry was all too willing to believe because she never gave him a son.
Anne never cheated on Henry, he and Crowells lied so Henry could marry Jane Seymour, Anne never wanted to be married to Henry in the first place. She was in love with her bethrothed, but she also was one Kathetine's handmaid. Henry saw her and started to stalk and harass her. She even runaway from the court to escape him but he continued, wrote her letters. In her responses, Anne saud she didn't to be a mistress so Henry decided to make her queen and divorced Katherine. From then, he abused Anne until she was executed. For Katherine Howard, she was raped before her wedding to Henry so she wasn't "pure" and they use this to executed her.
I'm inclined to think Anne Boleyn actually won the Tudor court in terms of her legacy. Cleves came out on top in the moment, but between the Church of England and Elizabeth I...
(3 weeks late but) The context is given within the musical itself - they provide just enough exposition and context for even someone who doesn't know a second of the history of Henry VIII and his wives to know what's going on (like me - I walked into this musical knowing nothing and now thanks to falling straight down the rabbithole I know a lot more about the history than most people). If you're going to listen to more Six, the song Ex-Wives gives some of the exposition you'll need for the other songs. And finally - you, my good sir, have just earned yourself a sub. Looking forward to seeing some of your future content!
Check out the west end cast of Six’s performance at the Olivier awards, it’s a mashup of the opening number and the finale and should give you some extra context of the show and the wives themselves, plus the video and audio quality is a lot better in that performance 😊
They do, they even use the child rhyme that, as an American with very limited knowledge of the subject, I think school children use to keep them all strait, “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived,” she the first one who got beheaded, so the song is about the comedic irony of “don’t loose your head,” since that’s what exactly what happened to her.
The original west end cast has a performance of this on a TV show that’s better quality cause it’s not a bootleg. You should watch especially since I actually like the West End cast more than the Broadway one.
@@missbyates9008 that's actually the olivier performance and is a mash up of 2 songs. The TV show they did Don't lose your head on is called The One Show
The west end cast tv feature of Don’t Lose your head also makes minor cuts. It’s technically not the full song. The West End Live performance is again lesser audio quality but is the full song.
@ the beginning of the video: The broadway show "Six" was supposed to open march 12th, the same day the theatre district announced the immediate broadway shut down!
Six was actually in previews earlier this year for about a month, and then the Broadway shut down was announced on their opening night so they never got to officially open 😭😭
I love this song but I much prefer Millie O'Connell's version...i also always find it really weird with non British accents haha EDIT if you want more context in the show listen to Ex Wives which is the opening song and basically sums up the whole story
Man I wish people didn't always have to talk about Millie, I like Andrea's version so much better so seeing this is just like... I mean, YOU can like her, but there is just something about going onto a video of someone reacting to Andrea and going "I like Millie more! Watch her instead!" That doesn't sit right with me...
Oh God, nevermind, everyone else in the comments is saying"React to west end it's better!" So you're actually the LEAST rude about it. Let me say, if you're American, you'll like the Broadway one more, most of their fans aren't and so they lie and say the Broadway cast is bad, it's just bad for them because it's not what they're used to. Trust me, i watched the west end first and it was the worst decision of my life, I just... Didn't get it as well as I did with the broadway version. Basically what I'm saying is, if you're American, don't listen to them, watch the Broadway ver.
I'd never do that on someone's own video but when someone is reacting to something (especially something they've never seen before) then there's nothing wrong with suggesting alternate version of it. There's no guarantee an American will prefer the Broadway version or that a British person will prefer the West End version; a lot of people connect to the first one the were exposed to but that's not the same for everyone. I personally prefer the West End cast but I'd never tell people they were wrong for liking another version and say people are lying and saying the American version is bad...if they are saying the words it's bad then that's wrong but if they're saying they prefer West End or think West end is better then there's nothing wrong with that. We all have opinions and preferences and that's fine, you carry on watching Broadway clips and I'll carry on listening to the West End cast...its all good
@@WhedonianPotterhead Well there IS something wrong about saying one or the other is bad. I never said the West end was bad, I said I enjoyed the Broadway one more, deciding if something is bad is something you decide for yourself and no one else. And I'm sorry, I was more of ranting about the OTHER people in the comments basically shooting down the Broadway ver, I felt the need to defend it because they are feeding a clueless person all this biased information. I'm sorry if you felt attacked or targeted.
Personally this is my least favourite six song (unpopular opinion) because it portrays Anne Boleyn as a ditz and kind of silly rather than it being as deep as some of the other songs. There is a really cool version of Ex-Wives/Six that was done in lockdown though which involved the West end, Broadway, Australian, uk tour and cruise ship casts all coming together
Yeah, Boleyn was definitely turned into the comic relief character, which is disappointing because she really did have issues in her life. Unfortunately though, most of their lives were sad, and if every song was sad the musical would just be depressing and unenjoyable.
I also feel like they changed her up a bit due to her popularity in history. Boleyn is most well known as this conniving witch/temptress who charmed the King and paid the price for her head, who gave birth to Elizabeth ii; the most well known ruler. They even poked fun about it with Boleyn's intro where she was the only one people cared about and probably the only queen they remembered the name to if they aren't a history nerd, so what the audience expected was this super smart and conniving Boleyn, but got a kinda ditzy, kinda smart, super bitter about her beheading Boleyn which I'm not upset about since it's still pretty funny.
the thing with six is that it started on the west end and here in england we have to learn about henry viii in primary school so most people are at least familiar with the 'divorced beheaded died divorced beheaded survived' thing even if they dont know anything else
I hope someone filled you in. Song is so good when you know a little of the background. Here’s a very watered down quick explanation, just in case. Henry VIII wanted Anne Boleyn so bad but the Pope wouldn’t let him get divorced. His first wife wouldn’t give him an annulment, so Henry split from the Roman Catholics & formed COE (Church of England…Protestant) basically making himself the head of the Church. So Anne Boleyn had a HUGE IMPACT on history! Oh and Anne Boleyn was the mother of Queen Elisabeth 👑 I hated history in HS but love it now. Hope it helped a little.
This musical is for US audiences what Assassins was for british ones; the context is very tied to general local culture... Anyway, you should really watch the West End version (it's pretty easy to find bootlegs). It's sooo good!
You don't even need bootlegs West End LIVE posted it on RUclips I think it was West End LIVE six performance 2019 there are two versions of Saturday and Sunday 1 will get down and the other is don't lose your head
Quick history session: Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII second wife and was accused of adultery and incest and was given two choices. die and her daughter Elizabeth l, gets to become queen or live and Elizabeth forfeits the right to the Frome. So Anne Boleyn chose death. Intern giving Britain one of our greatest monarchs. She says you're welcome by the way. Also her and the first queen (Catherine of Aragon) were both with King Henry at the same time.
you should react to the whole musical song by song with animatics! there is some exposition between songs but most of it is explained in the songs on their own
Millie O'Connell's version is amazing! I never watched this version all the way through, but I like her characterization. This is a really good musical. Highly recommended!

Behind The Curve omg I know, RUclips can be so annoying! And yayyyyyy I’ll have to check it out ❤️ love seeing peoples first reaction to things (but especially this musical)
I know the portrayal of Anne has been criticized for its historical inaccuracy - and I’m not a fan of the suggestion she was flirting with other men leading to her death as opposed to the adultery charges being completely trumped up because she was “failing” to bare a son. HOWEVER, I do like that this song reflects that while she had agency in the course of events (unlike her cousin Kit Howard) it wasn’t a manipulative scheme. She was making choices as they came along, for better and worse.
Anne's story in this song is only half of the story about her and how it kind off went down really. in fact she wanted to marry someone else who is also named Henry but her family didn't approve even when they tried to elope, she was caught and sent to France to learn from the Queen. only then did she com back and she started to seduce the king. this is just a bit about her, and her life didn't last long after she got married to king Henry. she promised him a son which drove him to split the last option to making his own church, and when she cant give him a son, it went to shit.
If you want to learn a bit about Henry VIII, you could see if you could try to find a Showtime series called The Tudors, which ran from 2007-2010. In the first episode, Henry nearly dies in an accident; he realizes that if he were to die without a male heir, England could be plunged into chaos. This becomes an obsession of his, and he and a bunch of other people end up doing a bunch of horrible things as a result.
You LITERALLY didn't say a single thing throughout the entirety of the song, made a grand total of 3 sounds and maybe like 4 expressions in total. I'm not usually one to leave negative comments like this, but in this case actually: major disrespect to you and what you do. Quit making these or stop being a leach and actually add some commentary.
😮😮 😮 Context? How much more context do you need?!?! This is History101! 😮😮😮 I don’t think your own lack of knowledge is a legitimate criticism of the show- any more than it would be the show’s issue if you didn’t know basic arithmetic or how to count to 6. Not attempting to attack your lack of knowledge in this area, however, it is unusually low as you have acknowledged. It is really more a personal development issue for you to remedy than a valid show critique to put on RUclips.
Frankly this performance is faultless. There's no critiquing the way she sings acts, performs this. And yeah - better learn the her-story first..... If you want to critique/ react to something, better learn what it is first.
Just me are not I don’t like this boylen...the only thing I don’t like about her is the voice....not being rude are anything I just dislike this one.you should rescue to a different boylen

I think Kathrine Howard. Howard was beheaded. Parr survived, not died. But if you replace her for parr, you’d be correct
@@thepanda5746 Shoot, thanks. Completely messed up that name. Thanks for pointing it out!
Andrea is seriously my fav Anne. She just plays it SO well
This is my fave song from this musical! So happy to see your reaction to it 😀👍🏻
I'm inclined to think Anne Boleyn actually won the Tudor court in terms of her legacy. Cleves came out on top in the moment, but between the Church of England and Elizabeth I...
THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARAGON AND ANNE IS HILARIOUS 😅
It really works when she sings "and the little one said." It is a bit jarring when Boleyn is as tall as or taller than Aragon
Andrea probably my favorite Anne. That last note gets me every time 👌🏻👌🏻
(3 weeks late but) The context is given within the musical itself - they provide just enough exposition and context for even someone who doesn't know a second of the history of Henry VIII and his wives to know what's going on (like me - I walked into this musical knowing nothing and now thanks to falling straight down the rabbithole I know a lot more about the history than most people).
If you're going to listen to more Six, the song Ex-Wives gives some of the exposition you'll need for the other songs.
And finally - you, my good sir, have just earned yourself a sub. Looking forward to seeing some of your future content!
I love that she’s wearing green sleeves
Check out the west end cast of Six’s performance at the Olivier awards, it’s a mashup of the opening number and the finale and should give you some extra context of the show and the wives themselves, plus the video and audio quality is a lot better in that performance 😊
Here’s the performance: ruclips.net/video/WJbaU4j0JCo/видео.html
They do, they even use the child rhyme that, as an American with very limited knowledge of the subject, I think school children use to keep them all strait, “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived,” she the first one who got beheaded, so the song is about the comedic irony of “don’t loose your head,” since that’s what exactly what happened to her.
What I love to do is look at the other queens.
Cuz this song is such a fun choreography they all have such good facial expressions!!
You should react to the song Ex-Wives from SIX as it explains a lot more 🙂
The original west end cast has a performance of this on a TV show that’s better quality cause it’s not a bootleg. You should watch especially since I actually like the West End cast more than the Broadway one.
Oh interesting. Do you remember the name of the show it was performed on?
@@behindthecurvereacts ruclips.net/video/WJbaU4j0JCo/видео.html
@@missbyates9008 that's actually the olivier performance and is a mash up of 2 songs. The TV show they did Don't lose your head on is called The One Show
Behind The Curve BBC One show (though it is slightly censored)
The west end cast tv feature of Don’t Lose your head also makes minor cuts. It’s technically not the full song. The West End Live performance is again lesser audio quality but is the full song.
if you plan on listening to more of six, i would recommend that you listen to the songs in order, just so there's a bit more context :)
Six! was supposed to open the day that broadway shut down. I certainly hope they get to open in 2021.
I’ve actually been meaning to watch this show! This song has been the one recommended to me the most I hope you react to some of the other songs
This is my favorite of the casts - and my favorite Anne Boleyn ❤
I love this song but I much prefer Millie O'Connell's version...i also always find it really weird with non British accents haha
EDIT if you want more context in the show listen to Ex Wives which is the opening song and basically sums up the whole story
I will probably have to do that! Thanks for the heads up :)
Heads up, get it? I'm sorry, I'll see myself out 😂😂
Man I wish people didn't always have to talk about Millie, I like Andrea's version so much better so seeing this is just like...
@@nicolelouise9779 ya what bother me is that it feeds into the idea of her being the temptress
Which wasn’t true at all, she refused his advanced mulptople times and even was planning to be enhanced with Henry Percy I believe?
the thing with six is that it started on the west end and here in england we have to learn about henry viii in primary school so most people are at least familiar with the 'divorced beheaded died divorced beheaded survived' thing even if they dont know anything else
Oh and Anne Boleyn was the mother of Queen Elisabeth 👑
I hated history in HS but love it now. Hope it helped a little.
Yes If you watch the whole show they explain better what happened to all of them
Jane looks so happy when anne is about to die
I saw the show in its first week. The playbill has a page that tells a brief run down of each woman, so you get a little bit of context
"She says you're welcome by the way" um I dont remember saying thank you.
In my opinion shes a little to squeaky but shes still good but squeaky
you should react to the whole musical song by song with animatics! there is some exposition between songs but most of it is explained in the songs on their own
She was second watch the full musical
3:48 that is a proud sis you have on the upper right😂
Millie O'Connell's version is amazing! I never watched this version all the way through, but I like her characterization. This is a really good musical. Highly recommended!

All the British dudes, lame
Epic fail
Ooh, I wanna dance and sing
Politics, not my thing
Ooh, but then I met the King
And soon my daddy said, "You should try and get ahead"
He wanted me, huh, obviously
Messaging me like everyday
Couldn't be better, then he sent me a letter and who am I kidding
I was prêt-à-manger
Ooh, sent a reply
Ooh, just saying hi
Ooh, you're a nice guy
I'll think about it maybe, xo baby
Here we go

Get a life

If you wanna be wed, make up your mind
Her or me, chum
Don't wanna be some

Are you blind?
Ooh, don't be bitter
Ooh, 'cause I'm fitter
Ooh, why hasn't it hit her?
He doesn't want to bang you
Somebody hang you

I didn't really mean it but rumours spiral
Wow Anne, way to make the country hate you

Don't lose your head
Tried to elope
But the pope said nope
Our only hope was Henry
He got a promotion
Caused a commotion
Set in motion the C of E
The rules were so outdated
Us two wanted to get x-rated
Soon, ex-communicated
Everybody chill, its totes God's will
Henry's out every night on the town
Just sleeping around, like what the hell?
If that's how it's gonna be
Maybe I'll flirt with a guy or three
Just to make him jell
Henry finds out and he goes mental
He screams and shouts
Like so judgemental
You damn that witch
Mate, just shut up
I wouldn't be such a b-
If you could get it up
Here we go
(Is that what you said?)
And now he's going 'round like off with her head
(No)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he means it
(Seems it)
What was I meant to do?
(What was she meant to do?)
Like what was I meant to do?
(What was she meant to do?)
No, but what was I meant to do?
Sorry, not sorry 'bout what I said

I know the portrayal of Anne has been criticized for its historical inaccuracy - and I’m not a fan of the suggestion she was flirting with other men leading to her death as opposed to the adultery charges being completely trumped up because she was “failing” to bare a son.
HOWEVER, I do like that this song reflects that while she had agency in the course of events (unlike her cousin Kit Howard) it wasn’t a manipulative scheme. She was making choices as they came along, for better and worse.
Who saw an ad for hybrid cars
I’m so unused to the US version that accents were distracting me! I love Millie the most but this Anne is so adorable!

I don’t think your own lack of knowledge is a legitimate criticism of the show- any more than it would be the show’s issue if you didn’t know basic arithmetic or how to count to 6.
Not attempting to attack your lack of knowledge in this area, however, it is unusually low as you have acknowledged. It is really more a personal development issue for you to remedy than a valid show critique to put on RUclips.
Who cares about that guy? Ann is more interesting.
Frankly this performance is faultless. There's no critiquing the way she sings acts, performs this.
And yeah - better learn the her-story first.....
If you want to critique/ react to something, better learn what it is first.
