I would absolutely love one of those AK-102’s done up like that. Mainly on the premise of ammo commonality with the rest of my AR’s. Fine looking gun though, for sure.
The ak-102 seems like a pretty interesting option, especially where I'm at with winters where it can rain one day and absolutely freeze the next. The biggest question for me is how well it runs different ammo. Hopefully you will talk more about it in the future?
From reliability perspective civilian ak-102 runs perfectly on all but subsonic commercialy avaliabe ammo. But accuracy can vary significantly depending on specific type. 5.56 Saiga's are quite popular in Russia as a hunting carbine due to vide selection of ammo
I had one(sold it because mags were too difficult to find at the time) and it run great. One time I had some faulty Fiocchi rounds that were overpressured and jammed my NEA, I ended up shooting all the rounds with the AK because it got just one jam(two hits at the handle and it was good to go, while the AR15 was a pain in the ass). It wasn't a parts kit but an original Izhmash(I'm not in the US) so that may change for you

I have a few AKs, all of them old between 1970 and 1989. There's something cool about how they shoot, all that wood and steel smells and feels really cool. What's awesome about being a red state Constitutional carry resident is that I get to enjoy lots of different weapons between my paltry collection and those of my brother and friends. Feel people are limiting themselves being all AK or all AR all the time, they are both really cool in their own ways. Sort of like going to a buffet at the Bellagio and only eating one thing.

Thank you so much for representing the modern AK platform, as close as you can get to, because Russian Imports are banned here. I contacted Rob Ski of AK UNION a while back when you were showing modern AK's and asked him to get in contact with you. Sooooo freaking happy to hear you throwing out props with his channel. I hope you guys can calab on future videos.
Honestly im just incredibly sick of the AK vs AR debate. Ive always fucking hated the debate to begin with. Its preference. And nothing burns me up more then elitists attempting to shout down other peoples preferences just because they think their opinion is the only opinion allowed to have. I love well made firearms regardless of platform. Theres good and bad AKs and ARs.
@@MTFOphantom Same, I just like guns in general. Listening to people fuss about which platform is better can get so incessant and tiresome sometimes. That’s why I have both.
They're both fine. The AR is better for Americans simply because of better parts and ammo availability, especially if SHTF and you're scavenging police armories after all the police have turned into zombies or whatever. In a Red Dawn situation, you're probably better off with AKs and scavenging dead commies after you hit their supply lines. But between the two, I expect literal zombies over paratrooper commies, so the AR wins out. It's simply early mover advantage. The AR was here first, and dominated the market. In other places, with other markets, the AK may be the better choice. I don't have a problem with anyone anywhere buying guns of the opposite type, against local market forces, just as long as you acknowledge and prepare for the downsides of your choice being less popular. And if you own both, even better. One thing I'll add, which is no small point under a Democrat regime or other anti-gun government somewhere: AK 80% lowers are not that easy to turn into actual guns. Unless something has changed, AR lowers are just so much easier to covertly (and legally) proliferate than AKs. If you want to own guns you don't want potential confiscators knowing about, the AR is just the best choice, hands down. Heck, there's a machine you can buy that'll turn a solid block of aluminum (a 0% lower) into a finished AR lower now automatically for you in about 3 hours. We've had automation for finishing 80% lowers for years. AKs, from what I understand, require a lot of special tools.
Garand Thumb made it look like the ordinary Russian soldiers would be equipped like this with amazing optics, sick lights and IR lasers and illuminators a sick NVGs. In reality they have 50 year old AKs and the best optics any of them have are Holosuns. LMAO what a joke 😂

I got the 5.45 bug in 2020 when everytime I'd go into my local gun shops they had stacks of 5.45x39 that never decreased and the price per round was 0.21. I missed shooting my AKM and ARs 2x a week because my ammo stock was getting low while replacement stock was 3x in value. That's how I ended up with my 74 and 6k rnds of 5.45 lmao. As far as I know I'm the only person in this county that has a 5.45 chambered weapon or atleast shoots one regularly enough to be only one to buy 5.45 here. My local shops are still getting in 5.45 at half the cost of 5.56 so I've been getting a ton of time behind it. Now I'm going to have to find a 105 kit to build and God only knows how much I'll spend to achieve that.
@@AhmedRazaAli_2009_pk I would consider selling my 16" AR if I was confident in my long term supply of 5.45, but the dems hatred of Russia and guns over all has me spooked about jumping all in. Otherwise I'd fork up the dough to get a Fuller built one.
My shooting pals thought I was crazy when I bought a S&W AR upper chambered in 5.45x39 but when I took it to the range the first time and they saw how capable the setup is they were saying "how cheap is that ammo again?!?!" I live it and have 2500 rounds right now. I need to pick some more up, I still love my Ak47 and my ARs in 556 but to be able to shoot for that cheap is the best part.
There is a reason Sig /Swiss Arms develop the 55X series after the AK. I would like to see GT do an ice test on the 55X series… I know we have already seen this test at Jungfrau though ;)
I've personally been a fan of the quick disconnect side-rail mount optics for the AK platform. In the event of optic failure, while unlikely, you could pop it off and use the irons.
@@dakotamaiden4331 yes different people like different things but your ideology goes against modern professional rifle handling. The AK series platform has a loose fitting sheet metal dust cover. This section of valuable real estate is impossible to use as a solid mounting surface to retain any type of 'Zero'. This is why the rail riveted to the side of the receiver even exists... Unless you want to have your optic 2 feet in front of your eye hanging off the end of your gun, then you're not going to have comfortable eye relief without some sort of acceptable mounting surface
@@CharlieBarkinTheDog I build guns bro. What you just said is so fucking wrong and 60 years In the past. Zenitco and many others fixed this problem. The future is now
@@dakotamaiden4331 actually it's not wrong. The standard dust cover for an AK is terribly unreliable as an optic mount. You "build guns" but don't understand a basic AK trait? Ofcourse If you throw a Zenitco on the top its going to be better. But none of us in this convo have said anything about zenitco. Once again, the standard stamped steel dust cover on the AK is completely unreliable as an optic mount...............
@@dakotamaiden4331 60 years in the past? I guess people stopped wanting to put optics on AKs....... The stamped Dust cover, side reciever rail, and using proper eye relief are all very much present day things and ideas. Now I'm honestly curious, what exactly about what I said is 60 years in the past? That makes no sense. No matter what upgraded dust cover you buy it still has nothing to do with the fact majority of even modern AK builds use a stamped dust cover and side rail.
Two questions... 1. Are we calling it the Ron Jeremy cinematic universe, or the Garand Thumb cinematic universe? 2. Will Tactical T-Rex from Kentucky Ballistics ever be involved, even if just for the finale someday?
You're not alone. There was a kind of back-fire when various Spetsnaz units were instructed to move away from 7.62x39, but they kept several guns in each unit. While I own and run 5.45, the 7.62 is arguably a better cartridge in a bunch of instances. For me, as a slender fellow, I just want to carry more ammo. The 7.62x39 is a great round.
It’s no wonder that AK-...takes the first place with more than 100 million produced, but just that among the 10 famous world brands, three: AK, Simonov, and Mosin altogether gives about 202 millions while the rest seven West companies listed only about 176 millions, moreover Mosin takes the 5th place, a little lower than Simonov brand. But.....unfortunately very often due to globalization the weapon works against the country where it was designed and produced, like what one can see in Ukraine, where AK are used from both sides. As for AK being banned in USA, you can easily to get it in the net, where Ukraine people sale all you wanted, and it’s really made in USSR, not in China and other countries where the quality as a rule less, because of using bad steel. The famous Russian jet engines D 180, used in USA Atlas rocket have special steel alloys that allows to resists temperature about 3000 degree Celsius, and that helps to increase the pressure of gases. And Russia still keeps secret. So it’s not difficult to copy something, but quality of materials used often the main puzzle. Only 4 countries can produce engines for jet aircraft USA, Russia, GB and France. So these technologies are really not for everyone.
7:30 You can get even as short as a 10 Inch Barrel, the very first Mk18 Mod 0 "Typ 0" were that short, but the problem was, that some muzzle devices did collide with the bayonet lug. There are some very rare examples left of Mk18 with the bayonet lug removed. Later the barrles were cut to 10.3 Inch at the Mk18 Mod 0 "Typ I" later models produced at Colt have 10.5 Inch barrels called Mk18 Mod 0 Typ II.
Colt RO609 XM177E1 and USAF GAU-5 had a 10” barrel in the mid 1960s for a very short production run, but they had the bayonet lug removed from the FSB, as did the 11.5” XM177E2 and GAU-5A/A.
I honestly don't know how that video surprised anyone. Given that this has been tested numerous times over the years including the well publicized tests in Alaska and the fact that no countries in/near the Arctic circle with the exception of Canada run a DI AR.

@@TheRifild Original statement was a guy claimed that a AK could fire 2,000 before failure, and I'll say again it's BS, your not going to do 2,000 rounds in mag dumps without failure, It's that simple.
It's been a long-time well known secret, that 5.45 is generally more ballistically efficient than 5.56 out of shorter barrels and at longer ranges. It's a great cartridge, imagine if there was the same level of ammunition quality as with it's competitor.
@@gifthorse3675 The third most popular intermediate rifle cartridge in the world is not going anywhere any time soon. ah yes the Colt AK-47, chambered in 00 buckshot. A reliable break-action handgun with a 30 round Stanag magazine, it's fully-automatic and fires like 8 million rounds per minute I think. It's affordable, and you can put a muzzle brake on it to make it quiet, and a sniper scope to increase stopping power.
Hey GT, I'm watching the video and by now at two points you said "gonna out it up right now" and nothing came up: when mentioning the Mk. 18 and a 5,56 vs 5,45 velocity graph. The video is great and I can look up those things no problem, it's just something that I didn't see anyone else mentioning.
@Charlie B They all have their weaknesses. The AK just has less of them. The biggest problem is that if something breaks in the field there’s no fixing it in the field. But that doesn’t happen all that often.
I have a Galil Ace 16" 5.45 chopped down to 12.5 and it is a very nice shooting gun. I also have an AK105 clone built off a Bulgarian parts kit. There's a large difference in the weight and balence of the two. The milled Galil is of course a good bit heavier Than the kit build. Even though the kit is lighter it is still a good bit softer shooting as well.
He did a review of the galil ace 8 inch barrel and said he thought it was a bit over gassed but it of course ran like a champ. I don’t think it was a review on the new gen 2 though
@@ricksmith7232 I mean that's fair, but a KNS piston will fix that way cheaper than anything Jim fullers gonna build for you. Not knocking Jim or Mike, just saying for your average Joe the galil is about as close as your gonna get, and it's probably less than half the price
I'm gonna be honest. After a long day at work and finally sitting down to watch this video. While entertaining, Mike's voice has put me to absolute sleep. I don't even remember what happened in the last 15-20 minutes. That just means I'll have to watch it again and I'm ok with that.
This is my favorite video so far very well done! Out of curiosity what are some differences you've noticed between the 105 and the ak12? With the Zenit upgrades on the 105 is it basically the same? or perhaps even better then the newest Gen of the AK family. With all the research I've done I don't really see any differences between the 100 series 200 series or 400 series (ak12 ak15 & ak19) other then the mods you put on the 105 being basically stock from the factory with the newer Gens. Of course this is all based on what I've read as I've unfortunately not been able to play with any of the new Russian perfection but I would love to hear about it from someone with first hand experience handling the Ak12. Keep making great videos especially on the AK side!!
The differences come down to minor nuances such as how there are differences in the design with the 12 (or anything based on the 400 series which the current 12 was based off of) A free float handguard for example that doesn't use retaining caps, integral gas tube and front irons, fixed gas tube and a different mounting solution with hooks for the dust cover for example. The current variant of the 12 with the new stock and polymer trigger guard is about as light as an AK74M based on the spec sheets, where as the 200 series which is closer to a modernisation of classic 100 series models are noted to be heavier. IMO, the 12 is an odd evolution of the platform due to what the Russian MoD was after. It has potential, but I'd say it's more a streamlined evolution than revolution, a few hazy steps forward one might say. Maybe the odd drunk step to the side or few.
9 hole reviews recently did an AK accuracy with a Bulgarian 74 with irons and it performed how we all assume AK’s do. However, after they fitted all the zenitco furniture and placed optics on it (I think it was a red dot with a 3x magnifier) it actually preformed far better than an AR-15 with the same modifications. They thought that maybe it was just the optics but also because of how tight the fitment is on the zenitco lower handguard, they think it’s possible that it messed with the harmonics of the barrel which in turn made it that much more accurate. If that’s true, that’s insanely cool
I'm dying waiting for an AK-12K variant on the civilian market in the EU though. The AK-12 is about a bit cheaper than a MK-18 in terms of pricing (Izhmash Saiga TR-3 civilian name). But then KG recently announced the AK-19 and if a AK-12 in 5.56 is ever a thing in the near future, boy my wallet will feel it.
@@Herulen might not be in the specific country he lives in. I have a similar issue with new .308 galils, they're "available" but always out of stock, and I don't speak German or French to check other large markets.
Nice to see people coming around to the 105 idea. I have two 105-ish guns (but with 14.5+pinned barrels because...I'm too lazy for NFA stuff) both built by Jim Fuller maybe 12-13 years ago now. Early adopted to the Kreb's retaining plate, the Tromix charging handle, the Kreb's enhanced safety and my two rifles even feature the Kreb's 105 block they used to make, etc. Been running it for a long time now and they're just incredible rifles. At the time I was dumb enough to spend $300 for proper Russian folding stocks (shortly before they flooded the market). I admit I think the 12.5" AK's are - as you said - basically the perfect short range carbine option. Fold the stock, small package, no real ballistic penalty, etc. Great guns.

The lore has gotten to a true epic level.

Arguments could be made that russian army doesn't really run them yet but it's a platform comparison, not a service rifle one.
Just saying if you drop an AK in mud/snow once and it becomes a bolt action instantly…

I've personally been a fan of the quick disconnect side-rail mount optics for the AK platform. In the event of optic failure, while unlikely, you could pop it off and use the irons.
you can just use a QD mount for an optic and have the same thing without the bulk. different strokes for different folks

So do they actually ship them to the states without any problems? I would love to get one for my saiga.
I believe Oxide has a video on the AK-12
The differences come down to minor nuances such as how there are differences in the design with the 12 (or anything based on the 400 series which the current 12 was based off of)
A free float handguard for example that doesn't use retaining caps, integral gas tube and front irons, fixed gas tube and a different mounting solution with hooks for the dust cover for example.
No the systems have a different but the 1 to one design you mean the AK12s the s have a shorter barrel and the stock was folding
I saw there videos on the AK74’s and AK105 and there videos shows the superiority of 5.45 out of any barrel size particularly shorter barrels.

Great guns.
I'm from Texas any idea where I can get my hands on a clone 105
@@rodrigocharo5275 As with most AK's, someone will build one for ya - just gotta find a suitable donor gun or parts kit. Apparently PSA is considering building a clone at some point.
