    These video courses are a unique resource for adapting Indian Classical Music to the guitar. The knowledge I am able to present here is largely thanks to my Gurus Roopa Panesar and Shakir Khan who both play sitar. They have provided much of the raw material and I have used my experience as a guitarist, teacher and sitar student to develop the techniques and stylistic choices to suit this beautiful and powerful style of playing.

    It's midnight now in India. But strangely enough your rendition of Bhairavi sounds like it was meant to be played at midnight. Wonderful sir.

      Thanks for watching. I too imagine this being played at night even though it's technically a morning raag. It's traditional to play it at end of a recital so it's possible to play at any time really. Take care 🙏

      Is Jhinjhoti midnight or 9 pm? Cause to me that one sounds so appropriate for sunset! It’s funny how they are made for specific times yet sound different. Raag Yaman is for the morning; to me it sounds like the morning, sure, of a rather dark and ominous day.. as if... Judgment is approaching and the accused know it! Haha. The little major scale moments are the fleeting glimmers of optimism and hope that come and go in their mind. It could also be indicative as a raga on the morning of a departure or moving day.

    Being someone who is trained in Sitar and has started to learn the guitar, I can’t express enough how enchanted I am by this. Nailing the techniques are hard as is but also translating the notes perfectly is just amazing. Love this so much ❤️

      Thanks very much for your appreciation and I'm glad that you you got it inspiring. For some years I was dividing my practice between sitar and guitar. But at one point I felt the need to focus fully on the guitar but as a purely Indian classical instrument. This is what the results are looking like so far. I am immensely grateful to my gurus for for their guidance and the onward journey of adaptation and discovery is a never ending path. Thanks very much for watching.

    Hey sir
    its nice to see people playing a raag in front of a camera (so i can learn it hehe)
    i have a question, what kind of string do you use?

    • @JackJenningsGuitarist
      @JackJenningsGuitarist  3 года назад +1

      It is essentially standard tuning but the low E and A have been swapped for high strings like the Chikari strings like on a sitar.
      6th D - 8.
      5th D - 8.
      4th D - 28.
      3rd G - 18.
      2nd B - 14.
      1st E - 11
      The top 4 strings are from an 11 set. You could use 10 set gauges. But I find that the G-string works much better for bending if it's a thicker string. It actually allows you to get more pitch range before you run out of bending space on the fretboard.
      If you don't have the chikari strings then just 'drop D' tuning (DADGBE) will work to give you a drone. But you won't be able to play the chikari patterns.

      Thanks for your detailed information, i didnt thought that indian music uses specific strings. im playing 10's and was thinking to go thicker for the "feel".
      i want to take your courses, if not this year then next one.

    • @JackJenningsGuitarist

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes in it's basic form Raag Bhairavi is equivalent to the Phragian - 3rd mode of the major scale.

      Hello I have a course on Raag Bhairavi as part of the Indian Classical Guitar Academy and it covers the main theme/composition in this recital. But this is long form improvisation so it's not notated anywhere. You just learn the concepts and techniques and create new music each time.
      Go to www.indianclassicalguitar.com to see more
      Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it 🙏

      Hello Atul sorry for the late reply. I see you have join the Academy now so you will have found out by now. But here it is anyway. 👍

      @JackJenningsGuitarist  2 года назад +1

      Yes I do! I've had a few students start from scratch and get really good results, while enjoying the whole process.
      The Essential Techniques course is the place to start. It has been created for guitarists who already have some playing experience - not necessarily in Indian music. However it is also very suitable for beginners, as the concepts and techniques are taught in a very clear way and the earlier chapters contain basic exercises that are easily understood.
      See more about it here : www.indianclassicalguitar.com/essential-techniques.html

    Bhairavi in this recital just doesn't sound the same as the phrygian mode. It has lot more character in this recital. Mesmerised by the chikari too.

    • @JackJenningsGuitarist
      @JackJenningsGuitarist  3 года назад +1

      Hi Aditya thanks very much for watching. I'm glad that came across. There are lots of other notes added into it at particular times. Although the fundamental scale is same as phrygian as you said. It has much more varied colours as you start adding the shuddha (natural) intervals back into phrases, in ways that helps to characterise the raag.🙏
