Nina Burmi uses her smooth three-octave vocal range to explore the thumri style - a semi-classical genre intimately connected with dance, poetry, and drama.
    Learn more about the music:
Thumri is a sensuous ‘light classical’ style, originating in Uttar Pradesh. The word is derived from the Hindi ‘thumakna’, meaning ‘to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle’, and the genre remains closely connected with dance and drama. Ragas are treated more flexibly, and songs are often devotional, romantic, or even erotic in nature. Lyrics have a central role, often being based on folk tales or classical poetry, and commonly depicting the separation of lovers, or myths of Lord Krishna.
Nina Burmi sings in the Kirana gharana style, tackling khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other forms. Currently living in the UK, she trained under the esteemed husband-wife pairing of Dilshad Khan and Parveen Sultana, and combines the latter’s wide vocal range with a more sparsely ornamented approach. In this song she is joined by top accompanists, with lyrics describing the tension and sorrow of a lover who is separated from Lord Krishna.
    Recorded for Darbar Festival 2006
    -Nina Burmi (vocal)
    -Ramesh Mishra (sarangi)
    -Sanju Sahai (tabla)

But I feel the vocal lacks broad frequency cover.
It is more of mid type.
This may be mic issue also, but that has less chance to occur.

This is awesome, one of the best examples where the nasal voice and the throat voice is used to perfect advantage. The ability to explore diverse vocal ranges without any crack in the voice is a sign of God gifted talent. Thank you for sharing.

If somebody understands music a little bit, they would appreciate how difficult the notes were.
    And intonation.
    And rhythm.
And what a beautiful sync by the Tabla and the Harmonium. All I can say is "Masterpiece!!!" This is indeed a spiritual experience.

Every night I listen to this before going to bed Its like a meditation for me.

    English translation of the song:
Your memory hurts night and day, O beloved
    Peace eludes me without you
Your memory hurts night and day, O beloved
Now, grief peeks through (when I see myself in) the mirror
Flowers bloom and fall during the separation
Who can arrange (for my) Beloved to meet (me)
    Verbal translation:

(Your) memory hurts night and day, O beloved
आये (Aaye, comes) ना (Naa, not) तुझ (Tujh, you) बिन (Bin, without) चैन (Chain, peace)
    Peace eludes me without you
झांके (peeks through) उदासी (Udaasee, grief/sadness) अब (Ab, now) दर्पण (Darpan, mirror) से (Se, from)
बिरहा (Birhaa, separation from beloved) खिल (Khil, bloom) फूल (Phool, flowers) बदरसे (Badarase, fall)
Flowers bloom and fall during the separation
साजन (Saajan, Beloved) कौन (Kaun, who) मिलाये (Milaye, arrange to meet)

Thumri's are designed to catch the emotion of love both separation and unification of two lovers. This one is based on the pain of separation between two lovers. The word thumri comes from the word thumkna which basically means to dance. A thumri is designed to make you dance. Fun fact Thumri's can range from devotional to even Erotic emotions. 😅

Problem is there are various aspects like preserving the core yet keep re-imaging the core for newer audience, that's how music evolves & evolved.
The other aspect is defining culture ? If one removes cultural aspects from culture then what is culture ?
See everything evolves due to time, interaction, period etc. but academia puts it in boxes & pits people against people using words which are ambiguous to describe but have very specific meaning for many people.

Music is very much owned by culture and you can be patron to it.
Music is important component of culture. Different cultures have different music, you can appreciate and love all. But you can't say it's not owned by culture. It's like disowning your identity, heritage and culture.
