Absolutely wonderful, as all your videos are. But as an Iranian musician, I do have a little comment. Hijâz(kâr)/Chahârgâh is central to Arabic/Iranian music much more in stereotype than in actual fact - it has become the symbol of the music of that region to foreign ears. It actually makes up a fairly small percentage of the working repertoire, and maqâm Bayâti/Shûr family (similar to Western minor, with a microtonally adjusted 2nd and sometimes 4th) is far more widely used in the musical culture.
I've had the experience of playing Iranian music for mixed audiences - I can do 40 minutes in Shûr for the Iranians but the second I switch to Chahârgâh, all the white folks in the crowd light up, as if I've just remember how to play our own music.

@@the_monsoon_diaries Exactly, there's an element of exoticism here. I think the reason this scale is so often used to represent the Arab and Persian worlds in the West is that it sounds relatively unfamiliar to Western ears while also being playable without microtonality. It's basically as 'Eastern' as the Western system can get, so it ends up becoming the stereotype.

Thanks... I can almost 100% relate with your observations/research.. its rare to find a friendly-teacher with versatile vision..
I have seen many teachers being rigidly imposing hard lessons on poor fellow student.. which subconsciously kills the freedom of thought(ideas doubts blossoming in mind)..
Keep discovering & sharing amazing facts !😁🪷🍁💐

I've always felt that Raag Yaman and Maqam Al Bayyati are the most mesmerizing ones of both worlds 🖤🎼 and i think Bayyati is the most common in classical Arabic songs, mainly Egyptian.. which we call "Tarab" songs. Hijaz may be the most common one contemporarily

Wonderful comparison! I play Sitar, Arabic Oud, and Turkish Saz so this topic is of supreme interest to me! One additional piece of info I can offer is that in Persian/Iranian music the Re and Dha notes in Chahargah (which is similar to Bhairav and Hijazkar) has microtonal placement which is sharper than hindustani komal re and dha. You can see Persian Setar has more frets than Indian Sitar to play these intervals. Also Maqam Zanjiran is equivalent to Raga Nat Bhairav not Ahir Bhairav. The intervals are the same but the starting note is sa instead of ma. Thanks for this nice discussion!

    Hi,
    Great video.
Just one thing that I wanted to add,
When we talk about Arabic tunes (perticularly the one you are talking about), I think it has more to do with Raag Basant Mukhari or Raag Hijaz than Bhairav or Ahir Bhairav.
Infact, the name of Raag Hijaz is directly borrowed from it's Arabic counterpart Maqam Hijaz. Afaik, the tune was brought to India by none other than Amir Khusroo who initially named it as Hijaz. Later, it merged with two other raags, namely, Vakulabharanam from Carnatic and Komal Bhairav from Hindustani classical music and created a new raaga called Basant Mukhari. Just wanted to share this amazing fact with you all.
However, you are doing an excellent work. Please keep it up🎉
