Track day one weekend, hauling lumber from Home Depot the next. Getting the kids to school and to work in between. All the car you’ll ever need.
I disagree with the "master of none". These cars are incredible to drive, and really offer no sacrifice in performance for the practicality. I used to keep up with Porsches in togues up the cliff roads in Cali. And I guarantee I was 10x as comfortable as the Porsche drivers were.
Same boat! My one complaint is that it isn't great on terrible roads. The suspension is too stiff. Otherwise, it's a very fun car. 2016 with 115k on it. We have another car we daily drive instead now. So, I'm kind of inclined to get a different track car instead.
Dad here with almost the exact same Golf R… same exterior color, 6MT… I don’t have the extra safety stuff like blind spot monitoring on mine though. I’m about to turn 40, so it cracks me up now spot on your are about the demographic for this car. It’s a great daily and really fun for track days. If you want AWD and a Manila your options are basically this and a WRX/STi. The Subaru is nice, but a bit old in the tooth. Soon we’ll have the Corolla GR, but I can’t bring myself to love a Toyota anything (well… maybe a Supra). You also have an old Focus RS which has a HELL of an engine, but that thing’s suspension is straight up abusive on all but glass-smooth roads. So basically a no go for the Midwest. TL;DR… it’s a killer car. I’d take it over a Civic Type R.
@@Got_Boost i thought they looked alittle weird originally too. But the. I saw a black one in person and it looked great. Plus most people end up getting after market stuff regardless of how it looks so might not matter in several cases lol. Only reason I didn’t get it is because I had work and someone else beat me to it. Every other MK8 I’ve been contacted about has been marked up ridiculously high. I’m a VW fan and currently have a MK7 GTI SE and would only ever trade it in for something AWD. I could suck it up and pay the extra if I wanted, but I won’t support them charging Audi prices for a Golf.

Basically the best all-around “fly under the radar” performance car you can buy. At 25 years old with an 18 DSG, it’s amazing yet almost disappointing how many people don’t know what they’re getting theirselves into when I antagonize a Mustang/Camaro on the road lol. Modification rating should have been higher IMHO. There’s so many routes and brands making quality aftermarket parts for these cars.
In traffic situations with my 2021 MK7.5 GTI I can still do that also. Obviously not in a drag race, but I just did it to a mustang last week on the way to work through traffic. And at the next intersection slow down he was giving me the thumbs up and a face of damn those VW GTI’s are no joke. Like he was totally surprised at the legendary quickness and responsiveness of the GTI lol 😂
@Justen G I am referring to in traffic situations where you have other cars in the mix as obstacles. Of course those cars are faster, but yes a Mustang 5.0 was going at it with me in traffic going on an overpass and down to the front of the line I completely did what I stated.
I just bought a 2019 Golf R 2 months ago and I’m definitely getting a lot of thumbs up while driving it from 50 year old dads. It might be the best part about owning a Golf R

The ideal golf R owner is either a former GTI owner who loves it for what it is but wants the bigger turbo and the AWD (and drift mode of they get a mk8) OR usually a car guy that wants something fun, small, quick, and a perfect all-arounder. There pretty much is no in between haha
Mk8 R and dad here, previous G35 driver and current Jetta owner who drives snowy mountain roads 4-5 months of the year. Golf R has been my weapon of choice and I finally picked one up last month. It’s everything I wanted in a small, fast, and practical car that handles snowy and dry mountain roads like a boss. It’s not my track beast, its my huge grin on the way to work grin and I love it.
short answer. YES. Looking at the STI, Type R, and focus RS. The mk7.5r is best balance of sport and comfort and the only one with an auto option worth getting. (cvt in a wrx!? really subaru?)
Golf R are boring if you like VAG get a Seat Cupra R, the same car but cheaper. The STI, Type R, Megane RS and Focus RS are way better for the price. I drove tons of GTI and Golf R, even my old Subaru B4 corner better than the Golf 7. I am gonna speak about the Megane RS or Clio RS on the race track they are killing machines and the best FWD cars.
Traded my Ram 1500 in for 2019 R and I loveeeee it...I've had hopped up Civics and boosted Integra's in my late twenties and here I am at 49 loving this thing!! I'm the type of person who owns a Golf R....

37 year old dad here, and I'm currently shopping for a 2018 or 2019 Golf R. It is exactly what I'm looking for in a car. I personally have always preferred subtly over flash.
The Golf R is pretty sweet. I went on a mountain road rally that started and ended with the Tail of the Dragon. At one point a brand new Golf R was behind my RS5 and stayed there the whole time. He was a great driver and the car was very capable and earned my respect for sure.
someone who owns a Golf R wants to stay under the radar to the general population as it doesnt give away what it can actually do (stage 2 in my case). Doesnt care what others think of them, again the car looks like a regular golf to most people. I like to surprise people in their "fast" car, until i see them in my rear view mirror. The interior feels very high quality, unlike competitors like sti focus rs type r. i love this car. its comfortable as hell, best sound system ive had in a stock car by far. i actually find this car very good loking, doesnt scream teenager like the competition.
Yup, I love sleeper care, wagons especially. I find the Golf R might be a poor mans version of the RS6 Avant, which I would buy if I could in a heart beat.
2017 Golf R owner, ex 2007 GTI owner. 25K miles. Paid $31,500 before taxes. Yes, it was absolutely worth it. A turbo charged, AWD, comfort meets sports hatchback with all the bells an whistles. Threw a few grand into it to go stage 2. Car drives like a dream. It does everything I'd want it to and then some. Honestly a dream car for me. There are very few cars that I'd want to daily other than this one.
I’d buy one because well, I did. I love it! I love it’s understated enough that some still don’t know what it is. We all know they cop a bunch of hate in the community which I personally find hilarious but it’s there. With some mods easily 350-400whp in a comfortable reliable hatch? What’s not to love. Great video mate, even if a little tongue in cheek.
I’m not necessarily a fan of Volkswagen myself but if I had the money, I’d own a GTI or a golf R. They look really fun to drive and tbh they look nice!
I’m a middle aged enthusiast who needs to get the kids to school in a safe, spacious car but daddy also wants one that hauls ass. My Audi S3 (same same) does both exceptionally while being understated and tasteful. 10/10 would recommend.
When launching a AWD Car like the Golf R it’s always best to keep the rpms at 4-4500 to get the best launch anything lower then that would just bog the car and not give you a good 0-60
Before even starting the video: I ride bmx and always have. My first car was a ‘94 Golf and the reason I bought it was that I could throw my bike in the back. Back seats were literally always folded down. My years in the service industry the car always did me well, I can haul stuff around, it’s good in the winter and comfortable. Currently I manage a bar/restaurant and have a ‘19 Golf R, my 6th volkswagen I’ve ever owned.
The type of person who would buy a gold R is one that has a 9-5 job, 2 kids with tons of curricular activities, and still wants to feel young while flooring it down the freeway zooming by and hoping cops don’t see him! And that my friends is a description of me, I mean if someone who would buy a gold R. 🙂
I purchased mine before the market exploded so I can only say I got lucky to pay what I did, especially for a ‘19 DSG. That said, if you told me to buy it today even with the prices they’re asking for, I would. I think they will hold their value for a number of reasons. The styling of basically all generations holds up over time. It’s a lot easier to trick out a less aggressive design than it is to “de-rice” something like a Type R. Also, if you want to tune it up you can, or buy aftermarket parts when somethings breaks and you eventually have an almost bulletproof system. If you don’t know what your life will have in store each day, and you want as little limitations as possible, I think it’s the best option out there right now.
Currently drive a FBO Veloster N. If I were to become a dad and absolutely had to get rid of my N, I would get a golf R. Can daily it everyday, has good power with great tunability and very usable with hatch.
I had a 2017 R as well. It was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned! It checked every box on my list: fast, convenient, good in snow, and reliable (at least compared to the other shitty euros I was around in the past). Very fun and confidence inducing. BUT… I constantly received weird looks and comments of how weird I looked in it as I’m a big guy and the car is so “little”. My wife HATED it, she didn’t get what the big deal was over it being an R. She constantly called it a mini van 🤦🏻♂️. Her shit talking was painful. Most people would actually always assume it was a GTI with a R bumper… My R was good to me though, may she Rest In Peace.
@@FitmentIndustries Fell asleep behind the wheel and went into the opposite lane. Came to just in time to look up and and see a car coming at me head on. Walked away without a scratch. 14 hour work days plus 1 hour commute both ways will do that to you though (I’m a supervisor in the Logistics/ transportation field so you can imagine my workload during rona times).
Got my 17 limestone gray dsg for 31k 6 months ago! 2 owner, 35k miles, front lip, apr stage 1, tint and lowered on the 19 Prets with eibach springs. Couldn’t say no.
@@bm717252 they must be romping on it pretty bad then. Stage 1 is just a tune and 2 is a tune and a downpipe. These engines can handle a lot more then that and turbo swaps are common
@@bm717252 Very reliable. Especially with reputable companies. These engines can handle a lot more than they come with out the factory. Just look at how much a Stage 1 tune does with no other mods. The ECU’s are also very smart and keep the cars from hurting themselves. Check out EQT tuning. Very safe tunes and lots of power. Great customer service as well.
Once you hit 45k price range the m240i becomes the more compelling option for me. The extra 2 cylinders alone make it worth it for me. If I was to get a vw, it would be a GTI with a more substantial price decrease over Audi & BMW.
Bought a new 2008 135i when it came out. Had to be towed 3 times in the first 36,000 miles. Then again 3 more times before trading it in on a new 2018 Golf R. I have 70,000 miles on the R and not a single problem. Went APR stage 2 at 15,000. Zero problems. I’ll take the R over the Bimmer.

I bought a 3 door mk6 R a few months ago as my first manual, with only 9k miles on it, and I can say I have loved the car so far. Interior has a high quality feel, it has a good amount of power stock, and overall drives really well. It's a very daily-able car, as I've been doing that for the last month, but is able to get after it when you want it to, and I think that's the beauty of the Golf. A fun car, but with practicality mixed in.
The people who own a golf R are usually calm and if they want to fly on the highway they have an R. Fast but not too fast we usually vape for some reason and always surprise people how quick the car is

Got a 17’ lapis blue golf r, and yep, its my every day daddy car. Dropped some money and work into it, hpa fr450 hybrid turbo, intercooler and high pressure fuel pump, forge turbo inlet, blow off valve and turbo blanket, modified stock intake with a high flow filter, opened up drivers side intake and silicone tubing, IE downpipe and resonator delete and tuned by EQT. Puts down 415 at the wheels, which are 18” konig ampliforms (which i did get from fitment industries, great shipping and packaging fellas). 0-60 on a 70* day is around 3.5 seconds, havent run any 1/4s yet. I love it, i still get good mpg, easy for dad life, and when im alone i can dust a few v8s here and there that dont know any better :)
😂 I used to own a fully built big turbo Subaru STi but my Stage 2 Golf R is faster, much more under the radar and also gets much better gas mileage. It doesn’t sound as good as a Subaru though.
Bought an '18 Mk 7.5 back in Sept for $37k OTD for a stock Lapis Blue one. Car is at 54k mi and other than a weak original battery, 0 regrets or issues and still love it. Still stock from powertrain side of things though, but feels plenty adequate for me on the street. Considering at least stage 1 tune in the future though.
2017 Golf R owner here. Male, single, working in engineering project management. So, a 'reasonable and logical' kind of guy. This car is a very reliable daily driver. It's powerful and stable on the road, but certainly lacks 'steering feel/feedback' for a sports car. That's why I got a MINI Cooper S as my project car, which is less powerful but much more enjoyable to drive due to its amazing steering feel and response.
I was in the market for an R at one point but settled for a really low mileage 2019 GTI Rabbit Edition because of the $26k vs $40k price tag. Had extra money for some low key mods. I still plan on upgrading to an R eventually, most likely Mk8 once they sort out most of the issues.
Back in 2005, I bought a brand new scion tc. I lowered it and installed a custom turbo kit in my garage pushing 298 to the wheels. Now, I'm in my 40s, have 3 kids, and after putting 100,000 on the scion, I bought a brand new 2019 Golf R with the thought that Id have what I want without going crazy with mods. Intake downpipe and tune is all you need. The fact that it's worth the same now as it was when I bought it 3 years ago is icing.
Golf R is the best daily driving enthusiast car around. It looks great, for the $ it holds its own against cars 3x the price. it’s very fast and they’re legit full on companies existing for modding purposes, the support is immense.
@@89dungey Are you talking about the old one or the new one? Because it is clearly stated in the official VW website that the new Golf R dry weight is 1550kg (3418 lbs). That is around 170lb more than the new GR Corolla and over 375lb more than the Type R. So the GR Corolla plus the driver is still lighter than just the Golf R alone, but my main problem is the design which i think is just to basic and bland and also obviously the price
@@nonameyet2205 the civic type R is by far one of the ugliest cars on the road. Good on a track but basic lackluster interior. also very expensive. No one has driven the Corolla yet so who knows. golf r reigns supreme for the daily driver
I love my Mk7 R (2016)! Just turned 120k super reliable and rips as a daily! My daily commute is over a difficult mountain pass and never had any traction issues. Surprise Porsche owners and others 😅 I really wanted a hatchback and Subaru stopped making one and didn’t trust buying a used STI Hatchback. Plus the interior sold me as soon as I sat in it, as I’m in my early 40’s and wanted something not design by a kid and lots colors and cheapness.
I'm a 41 year old Carpenter. I bought a brand new 2019 gti rabbit edition off the lot 4 year ago and it's still just as exciting to drive today as it was on day one.
Have a mk7 6speed. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It can be lowkey in traffic, and can still party with some aftermarket goodies. As far as gti comparison, more traction for action.
Been waiting for this video!!!Love the Golf R! It’s my dream car that ticks all the boxes. Have a 2015 Manual TDI with a Kerma tune, just love getting 900km with $60 🇨🇦 and cheap insurance. It’s hard to justify an R right now at these prices but hopefully soon.
I’d say it’s worth it imo. I bought one November 2021 for around 40k after taxes and fees. Turns out the previous owner left all the mods so I now own a stage 3+ R for just around the price they went for brand new

Got my 2019 in September with less than 11k miles, kbb was around $44k but paid $52k. Turns out the previous owner put in over $22k in mods including TE37’s on Michelin PS4S and an EQT Vortex done in house. Currently sitting at 538bhp/468whp & 500 lb-ft with stock internals. Looking forward to taking out some hellcats at the strip!

Just bought a ‘18 mk7.5 r and I’m absolutely in love. I’m 27 coming from a gen 1 MAZDASPEED3 and this feels like a grown up car. It’s the next evolution of the young car guy that wants to have fun on his way to support his family.
Golf R owners are like people from Delaware. They're always around you lurking in the shadows but you forget they're there until boom there's 3 at a 4 way stop staring at you and each other. All have on sunglasses but like the blue reflective ones for fishing. And they love old bay
53-year-old, my last sports car was a convertible GT with a Whipple supercharger… So is this a reverse midlife crisis? I do have to admit so far is the most fun I’ve had out of any car I’ve owned in my years of existence. PS stage 2 APR.
Probably younger engineers, decent amount of cash but wants a reliable and practical daily that's got a lot of tuning potential. Also, willing to bet he's pushing quite a bit more torque than 320 crank. Most stage 1 tunes on these cars will knock that up to around 360-380 ft/lbs at the tire. GTI's have a very similar torque comparison, since they're only fwd but are on a smaller turbo. I'd say at least 350 to the wheels for him though, even if it is a conservative tune.
The type of person that would purchase the Volkswagen R is: a person that has owned 9 VW'S in a life time, knows that it's a Bargain when compared to its sister brand: Audi RS3.
LMFAO this is frighteningly accurate...I even gave the RS3 two chances. Except for the noise itself there was nothing to 'truly' gain for the significant difference in cost.

I've had a 2015 manual wrx limited a manual mk7 golf r with apr stage1 high torque tune ( you will need that clutch btw)and now a new flappy paddle m2 competition. Love my m2comp but for the money the golf r is very very good .
I was working at my local VW dealership in the service department when we first say the GTI "R" which over the next few model years morphed into the Golf R. Over the years I was amazed to see how much the car "matured" as well as it's owner profile. In the beginning the R was the purest form for the VW enthusiast and very much kept it's owners linked to the local scene. Over the years, I would definitely say the R lost touch with the younger enthusiast crowd and went for the more mature crowd. This video is soooo on point and highlights exactly the type of person that drives a Golf R these days. Cheers to great content boys!
The Golf R specifically is for the GTI's boss, if we take the GTI as the fun everyday mans car that's quirky still fun to daily and enjoy. The R is simply the guy that's trying to be just above all that. Sensible because its AWD and that makes driving "safer" and not "fun", toned down looks (my opinion here, the only thing it has going here is the color way option, well it did, RIP 8), its more subtle, its normally kept fairly stock to keep the resale and the owner probably make a heavy point of keeping it clean. Its the epitome of ADULTING, they took the blue collar guy threw a suit on him and called it a day. (Also he didn't have enough for the Audi or BMW).
Golf R buyers want understated, fast and practical/usability pretty much the same as the GTI and you can’t put a age time stamp on these buyers because they could be 20 to 50’s and even 60’s if they still have the driving spirit left in them.

It's me, I am that guy. I drove a 2008 Audi A3 Quattro S line. Basically the Golf R. I sold it when I hit 190k miles. It was my favorite car ever. Great gas mileage, peppy, and it handled great. The only thing I didn't like about it was the DSG. Granted, the DSG was amazing, but there is nothing like rowing gears. They are excellent for commuting and highway driving, which I do every day, and you can carve the corners and have a spirited ride in your commuter car on the weekend. Not to mention you get that VW/Audi engineering and comfort. I will own one with a 6 speed. It is only a matter of time. I will buy it new if I have to. Edit: Father of 5 with a professional career and a garage full of tools, that's who will buy these
Had a Mk4 Golf for my first car then went to an E90 335i. I must have had a sensible moment when I bought my Mk7.5 Golf lol. It just does everything really well with no major drawbacks. E90 was great but seats didn't go down and the boot hatch was small. Longer than the Golf so less choice of parking spaces. Doesn't really go in snow either. The R gives me the same, if not better performance. The automatic is way less annoying in start/stop traffic and as a result is a more comfortable daily. Averaging about 30MPG (UK) over my E90's 22. The 4wd means you can actually use the power with confidence and not have to be so mindful of the rear end kicking out (which is both a good and a bad thing at times) Only thing I changed was to ditch the stock Cadiz wheels for matte graphite Pretoria and went with gloss black mirrors instead of the questionable silver ones. Looks good against a white car. Also installed the helix amp/sub which has made the stereo sound great The only thing it doesn't beat the N54 powered 335i in (and don't think it will even with a new exhaust) is engine sound. Can't have it all though
@@3for4PA Yes, it's an aftermarket part by German audio company Helix, specifically made for the Golf 7(but they also have solutions for other brands). You can order it from a VW dealership, part number 000051419B If you like things to be OEM, the subwoofer goes in the spare wheel well (so is hidden and doesn't take up any space) and even has a badge on it saying its an original VW accessory On my R I had to remove the spare wheel because the wheel well is smaller than usual due to the rear diff. On other models you can fit it on top of the spare wheel if you buy a longer bolt and remove the feet on the sub (so I hear). There is also a variant of this with a long rectangular subwoofer that goes in the boot like normal if you want to keep your spare wheel. I have roadside cover and also a can of tire fix. When I replace my tires I think I will go run flat just as a precaution You could also order it part only and fit it yourself. It's not a difficult install but you may need to rent a programmer from forum users or ebay to make sure the DSP is set to the right car. You may need some tools to re-pin the connector (2 wires for power). Everything else is handled by the harness. It takes the speaker output, amps/processes it and sends it back to the original speakers If you are thinking of changing speakers then I probably wouldn't do this as it's tuned for the original speakers and will likely sound worse with speakers that have a different frequency response This is for the base system. Not fender or dynaudio I believe fender and dynaudio already have subs in the spare wheel so should be easy to tell which you have
I feel old because I love the look of this R. Favorite color, but I would drop the black wheels and throw bronze or silver on. Anthracite might be a bit too monotone but I'd like to see it.
In my area the people who are driving the Golf that come to the auto parts store that I work at are one of three stereo types: 1) Old people who were sold the expensive option and don't even know that they have a nice car 2) Hippy types that some how have money while looking like that have literally no money 3) Mid 20s person who loves car shows and clout but can't afford any mods cause they just spent all their money on the car... I have yet to see a modified Golf pull up to my place of work but would LOVE to see more modified cars - Don't even see aftermarket rims tires or suspension on these which you can conveniently find on fitment industries ;)
The MK7 platform/MQB is great value and has great modification support. A built GTI will likely beat a built R on the track simply because of weight and ability to carry speed in corners. However if youre looking for something to chop your mates, civics or wrxs at the lights all day an R is probably the route youll wanna take. One thing that keeps the GTI/R/any VW bound at the hip like a siamese twin is its love for consuming water pumps/thermostats.
Water pumps on these are notorious for going out. Almost like clockwork before 50k miles. Had mine pressure tested and it failed. Warranty covered it. Would have been $600 for pump and thermostat. Bought my 2018 7.5 DSG new and still have it. Hoping for something different that I'll like in the 8.5 R.
Just bought a stage 2 ready (besides downpipe for inspection reasons) mk7golf R with 50k on it for 30k. Sometimes I regret it due to its original sticker price, but it’s my first car purchased on my own and I love it dearly. Can’t wait to downpipe it and make it a monster :) I get compliments all the time and I even have made friends at car meets from it, which is the best part.
I absolutely love my MK7 golf R!!! Most underrated Hot Hatch ever produced! I took it a little to far but have never been the type to hold back. My MK7 is fully built with a G35 1050 turbo on it. The car makes a bit over 700 WHP. This car is still dally driven. Very reliable and a blast to drive especially when putting most super can in the rear view mirror. Definitely still worth 40k.
I try to convince myself I have some sort of class (I don't) so I purchased an S3. I really enjoyed the interior space more then the MK7.5R. Got it to 475whp-ish and high 10's in the 1/4. It was a fun little sleeper.

I have a 2017 r, full stage 2 kit 360whp 337wtq car is amazing super fast and fun to drive, still easily use as my daily to rip in to the office. The only thing ive noticed after 5 years of ownership its small in terms of cargo space. Its just me and my wife but a trip to costco and the back is full. Performance wise these cars scream! 10-20k in bolt ons and tunes you can get supercar power for 60-70k all in car and upgrades.
I’d get a charger 392 over this. Basically same money and nearly 500 horsepower and rwd plus V8 snarl I did test drive a gti and it was a fun car to toss around. If I had a wife I’d want her to have a gti or R while I take the V8 rwd muscle car. I will say the appeal of the R is power to weight, tuning and the sleeper appeal of killing stuff like my challenger 1320 off the line. In the quarter and beyond the muscle will overwhelm it but it’s still a cool little car. Wish the new integra was as cool

LOL I bought this exact year and color (but with DSG) in 2018, it was one year old with 20K, it was in brand new condition with no modifications. I paid $30K for it, $32,500 OTD at some Lexus dealership. I would not pay $40K for one brand new, never mind 4 years old with a bunch of miles on it! I think people have lost their minds, I paid cash for it and could afford to pay a lot more, I just refuse to do it. Car prices are in an absurd bubble right now, I think it will eventually pop in a big way. Either that or hyper inflation will make flipping burgers at Mc D's pay six figures. At some point something will have to give, pay will have to go way up, or prices with revert. I suspect more of the latter will occur, but you never know. I like the car but I also did a lot of modifications (way more than Rick), front end grip/turn in was the main fix for me, front camber and caster transform the handling. I have drive several Type R's on track, with the right mods the Golf R is actually better. That and stage 2 power, pedal tuner, some brake mods, and it is the perfect sleeper.
I would say that the middle aged father type is spot on with the R. GTI's are definitely late teens to mid twenties. I, however, being 36 own a '17 WRX. My car is probably something I should have owned 10 years ago. So many customization that I've done to it, not to mention the loud as hell muffler delete. Rick, get an exhaust, man.
I guess I'm the R buyer who has always believed that VW made the highest quality hot-hatch. Now I can afford it and maybe even afford to add some mods.
I had a MK7 R and the manual transmission was a mushy mess, the clutch slips with just a piggy back tune (should have bought the DSG) but other than that, it was an amazing little car. I put a Diesel Geek shift linkage on it and it made a HUGE difference but that clutch at 9k miles when I traded it in was just a slipping mess on the interstate with the JB4 piggy back. I traded it for a Scatpack Charger and got a lot more room in the back for those car seats, a WAAAAAAY better exhaust note, much better looking (though it was an attention magnet for all the good and bad reasons) and I was kinda surprised that even when on the interstate, the R didn't give me that great of fuel economy... about 26 mpg cruising at around 77 and the dodge with cylinder deactivation would get about the same. I don't regret the trade but it was a step down in overall build quality but the ZF transmission in the Dodge was absolutely awesome and I think if I had ordered the R with a DSG, I'd have kept it. At the time we were extremely sour on VW's automatic transmissions as we had just replaced my wife's A4 transmission and despite them being in a class action lawsuit for them slipping and my wife's A4 having one of the lawsuit transmissions, we didn't get a replacement because our VIN number was AFTER the lawsuit was filed and not eligible so we came out of pocket about $1000 for a replacement from a pull-a-part and indie mechanic. I sold the Dodge during the pandemic for about what I paid for it brand new and am 2 years into a 3 year Tesla Model 3 Performance lease. The power is absolutely stupid but here I am already getting some considerations together for next year when I have to give my Tesla back and the MK8 R is on my list along with perhaps a low mileage RS3 or possibly an M340i... who knows what I'd end up with but if dealer's chill out by next year on the Golf prices, I may be back in an R. It was incredibly practical, well built and after spending 2 years with an almost 100% touch screen based car, I feel like transitioning to the MK8's infotainment system won't be a big deal for me. Not paying for gas and getting free charging at my office as our CEO drives a Tesla and installed a charger is nice but Tesla prices have gone up to the point that I feel they're no longer worth what they are going for.
I had a 2019 S3 and enjoyed it QUITE(!) a lot...but missed driving a manual daily so I sold my stg1/TCU tuned S3 and bought an untuned manual R. The S3 was $41k with about 36k on it and the R was $38k with 31k on it. No regrets...except for the MMI knob and the B&O haha. (also staring at the S3 was nice)
Tell Rick to get the AWE Tuning suite for the R. I've only ever gotten pulled over twice for being too loud with mine, and I can drive my daughter around in it, so that's a plus.

I disagree with the "master of none". These cars are incredible to drive, and really offer no sacrifice in performance for the practicality. I used to keep up with Porsches in togues up the cliff roads in Cali. And I guarantee I was 10x as comfortable as the Porsche drivers were.
Same boat! My one complaint is that it isn't great on terrible roads. The suspension is too stiff. Otherwise, it's a very fun car. 2016 with 115k on it. We have another car we daily drive instead now. So, I'm kind of inclined to get a different track car instead.
Dad here with almost the exact same Golf R… same exterior color, 6MT… I don’t have the extra safety stuff like blind spot monitoring on mine though. I’m about to turn 40, so it cracks me up now spot on your are about the demographic for this car. It’s a great daily and really fun for track days. If you want AWD and a Manila your options are basically this and a WRX/STi. The Subaru is nice, but a bit old in the tooth. Soon we’ll have the Corolla GR, but I can’t bring myself to love a Toyota anything (well… maybe a Supra). You also have an old Focus RS which has a HELL of an engine, but that thing’s suspension is straight up abusive on all but glass-smooth roads. So basically a no go for the Midwest. TL;DR… it’s a killer car. I’d take it over a Civic Type R.

I’m a VW fan and currently have a MK7 GTI SE and would only ever trade it in for something AWD. I could suck it up and pay the extra if I wanted, but I won’t support them charging Audi prices for a Golf.

Basically the best all-around “fly under the radar” performance car you can buy. At 25 years old with an 18 DSG, it’s amazing yet almost disappointing how many people don’t know what they’re getting theirselves into when I antagonize a Mustang/Camaro on the road lol. Modification rating should have been higher IMHO. There’s so many routes and brands making quality aftermarket parts for these cars.
In traffic situations with my 2021 MK7.5 GTI I can still do that also. Obviously not in a drag race, but I just did it to a mustang last week on the way to work through traffic. And at the next intersection slow down he was giving me the thumbs up and a face of damn those VW GTI’s are no joke. Like he was totally surprised at the legendary quickness and responsiveness of the GTI lol 😂
@Justen G I am referring to in traffic situations where you have other cars in the mix as obstacles. Of course those cars are faster, but yes a Mustang 5.0 was going at it with me in traffic going on an overpass and down to the front of the line I completely did what I stated.

Mk8 R and dad here, previous G35 driver and current Jetta owner who drives snowy mountain roads 4-5 months of the year. Golf R has been my weapon of choice and I finally picked one up last month. It’s everything I wanted in a small, fast, and practical car that handles snowy and dry mountain roads like a boss. It’s not my track beast, its my huge grin on the way to work grin and I love it.

Golf R are boring if you like VAG get a Seat Cupra R, the same car but cheaper. The STI, Type R, Megane RS and Focus RS are way better for the price. I drove tons of GTI and Golf R, even my old Subaru B4 corner better than the Golf 7. I am gonna speak about the Megane RS or Clio RS on the race track they are killing machines and the best FWD cars.

The Golf R is pretty sweet. I went on a mountain road rally that started and ended with the Tail of the Dragon. At one point a brand new Golf R was behind my RS5 and stayed there the whole time. He was a great driver and the car was very capable and earned my respect for sure.

someone who owns a Golf R wants to stay under the radar to the general population as it doesnt give away what it can actually do (stage 2 in my case). Doesnt care what others think of them, again the car looks like a regular golf to most people. I like to surprise people in their "fast" car, until i see them in my rear view mirror. The interior feels very high quality, unlike competitors like sti focus rs type r. i love this car. its comfortable as hell, best sound system ive had in a stock car by far. i actually find this car very good loking, doesnt scream teenager like the competition.

2017 Golf R owner, ex 2007 GTI owner. 25K miles. Paid $31,500 before taxes. Yes, it was absolutely worth it. A turbo charged, AWD, comfort meets sports hatchback with all the bells an whistles. Threw a few grand into it to go stage 2. Car drives like a dream. It does everything I'd want it to and then some. Honestly a dream car for me. There are very few cars that I'd want to daily other than this one.

We all know they cop a bunch of hate in the community which I personally find hilarious but it’s there. With some mods easily 350-400whp in a comfortable reliable hatch? What’s not to love. I’m a middle aged enthusiast who needs to get the kids to school in a safe, spacious car but daddy also wants one that hauls ass. My Audi S3 (same same) does both exceptionally while being understated and tasteful. 10/10 would recommend.
When launching a AWD Car like the Golf R it’s always best to keep the rpms at 4-4500 to get the best launch anything lower then that would just bog the car and not give you a good 0-60

I ride bmx and always have. My first car was a ‘94 Golf and the reason I bought it was that I could throw my bike in the back. Back seats were literally always folded down. My years in the service industry the car always did me well, I can haul stuff around, it’s good in the winter and comfortable.
Currently I manage a bar/restaurant and have a ‘19 Golf R, my 6th volkswagen I’ve ever owned.
The type of person who would buy a gold R is one that has a 9-5 job, 2 kids with tons of curricular activities, and still wants to feel young while flooring it down the freeway zooming by and hoping cops don’t see him! And that my friends is a description of me, I mean if someone who would buy a gold R. 🙂
I purchased mine before the market exploded so I can only say I got lucky to pay what I did, especially for a ‘19 DSG. That said, if you told me to buy it today even with the prices they’re asking for, I would.
I think they will hold their value for a number of reasons. The styling of basically all generations holds up over time. It’s a lot easier to trick out a less aggressive design than it is to “de-rice” something like a Type R. Also, if you want to tune it up you can, or buy aftermarket parts when somethings breaks and you eventually have an almost bulletproof system. If you don’t know what your life will have in store each day, and you want as little limitations as possible, I think it’s the best option out there right now.

Currently drive a FBO Veloster N. If I were to become a dad and absolutely had to get rid of my N, I would get a golf R. Can daily it everyday, has good power with great tunability and very usable with hatch.
I had a 2017 R as well. It was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned! It checked every box on my list: fast, convenient, good in snow, and reliable (at least compared to the other shitty euros I was around in the past). Very fun and confidence inducing. BUT… I constantly received weird looks and comments of how weird I looked in it as I’m a big guy and the car is so “little”. My wife HATED it, she didn’t get what the big deal was over it being an R. She constantly called it a mini van 🤦🏻♂️. Her shit talking was painful. Most people would actually always assume it was a GTI with a R bumper… My R was good to me though, may she Rest In Peace.

Walked away without a scratch. 14 hour work days plus 1 hour commute both ways will do that to you though (I’m a supervisor in the Logistics/ transportation field so you can imagine my workload during rona times).
Got my 17 limestone gray dsg for 31k 6 months ago! 2 owner, 35k miles, front lip, apr stage 1, tint and lowered on the 19 Prets with eibach springs. Couldn’t say no.
How reliable are the stage 1 and 2 tunes? I hear some owners are blowing their engines .
@@bm717252 they must be romping on it pretty bad then. Stage 1 is just a tune and 2 is a tune and a downpipe. These engines can handle a lot more then that and turbo swaps are common
@@bm717252 Very reliable. Especially with reputable companies. These engines can handle a lot more than they come with out the factory. Just look at how much a Stage 1 tune does with no other mods. The ECU’s are also very smart and keep the cars from hurting themselves. Check out EQT tuning. Very safe tunes and lots of power. Great customer service as well.
Once you hit 45k price range the m240i becomes the more compelling option for me. The extra 2 cylinders alone make it worth it for me. If I was to get a vw, it would be a GTI with a more substantial price decrease over Audi & BMW.
Bought a new 2008 135i when it came out. Had to be towed 3 times in the first 36,000 miles. Then again 3 more times before trading it in on a new 2018 Golf R. I have 70,000 miles on the R and not a single problem. Went APR stage 2 at 15,000. Zero problems. I’ll take the R over the Bimmer.

I bought a 3 door mk6 R a few months ago as my first manual, with only 9k miles on it, and I can say I have loved the car so far. Interior has a high quality feel, it has a good amount of power stock, and overall drives really well. It's a very daily-able car, as I've been doing that for the last month, but is able to get after it when you want it to, and I think that's the beauty of the Golf. A fun car, but with practicality mixed in.
Why the 6R over the 7R or 7.5 or the 8 ( because I might go THAT route too) 🤔 MONEY too TIGHT for a 8R and still ASKING alot for USED 7R

Got a 17’ lapis blue golf r, and yep, its my every day daddy car. Dropped some money and work into it, hpa fr450 hybrid turbo, intercooler and high pressure fuel pump, forge turbo inlet, blow off valve and turbo blanket, modified stock intake with a high flow filter, opened up drivers side intake and silicone tubing, IE downpipe and resonator delete and tuned by EQT. Puts down 415 at the wheels, which are 18” konig ampliforms (which i did get from fitment industries, great shipping and packaging fellas). 0-60 on a 70* day is around 3.5 seconds, havent run any 1/4s yet. I love it, i still get good mpg, easy for dad life, and when im alone i can dust a few v8s here and there that dont know any better :)
I feel like Golf Rs are bought by Subaru owners who have a good paying job, but they don't want that money to go toward head gaskets.

😂 I used to own a fully built big turbo Subaru STi but my Stage 2 Golf R is faster, much more under the radar and also gets much better gas mileage. It doesn’t sound as good as a Subaru though.
Bought an '18 Mk 7.5 back in Sept for $37k OTD for a stock Lapis Blue one. Car is at 54k mi and other than a weak original battery, 0 regrets or issues and still love it. Still stock from powertrain side of things though, but feels plenty adequate for me on the street. Considering at least stage 1 tune in the future though.
The stage 1 ECU and TCU tune is 100% worth it. Just watch out with the warranty stuff. VW dealers can check how many times the nand has been flashed.
I got my MK7r for 24k, stage 2'd it and loved every second of owning it. Then sold it for 22k 3 years later because my Coworker sold me his R35 GTR

2017 Golf R owner here. Male, single, working in engineering project management. So, a 'reasonable and logical' kind of guy.
This car is a very reliable daily driver. It's powerful and stable on the road, but certainly lacks 'steering feel/feedback' for a sports car.
That's why I got a MINI Cooper S as my project car, which is less powerful but much more enjoyable to drive due to its amazing steering feel and response.
I was in the market for an R at one point but settled for a really low mileage 2019 GTI Rabbit Edition because of the $26k vs $40k price tag. Had extra money for some low key mods. I still plan on upgrading to an R eventually, most likely Mk8 once they sort out most of the issues.
I just got one and I can’t think of any other car that I’d rather buy/own right now.

Back in 2005, I bought a brand new scion tc. I lowered it and installed a custom turbo kit in my garage pushing 298 to the wheels. Now, I'm in my 40s, have 3 kids, and after putting 100,000 on the scion, I bought a brand new 2019 Golf R with the thought that Id have what I want without going crazy with mods. Intake downpipe and tune is all you need. The fact that it's worth the same now as it was when I bought it 3 years ago is icing.

Golf R is the best daily driving enthusiast car around. It looks great, for the $ it holds its own against cars 3x the price. it’s very fast and they’re legit full on companies existing for modding purposes, the support is immense.

@@89dungey Are you talking about the old one or the new one? Because it is clearly stated in the official VW website that the new Golf R dry weight is 1550kg (3418 lbs). That is around 170lb more than the new GR Corolla and over 375lb more than the Type R. So the GR Corolla plus the driver is still lighter than just the Golf R alone, but my main problem is the design which i think is just to basic and bland and also obviously the price

I love my Mk7 R (2016)! Just turned 120k super reliable and rips as a daily! My daily commute is over a difficult mountain pass and never had any traction issues. Surprise Porsche owners and others 😅 I really wanted a hatchback and Subaru stopped making one and didn’t trust buying a used STI Hatchback. Plus the interior sold me as soon as I sat in it, as I’m in my early 40’s and wanted something not design by a kid and lots colors and cheapness.
My first new car was a 1983 VW RABBIT GTI. Cost $8,600 in '83. The good ol' days.

Have a mk7 6speed. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It can be lowkey in traffic, and can still party with some aftermarket goodies. As far as gti comparison, more traction for action.

I’d say it’s worth it imo. I bought one November 2021 for around 40k after taxes and fees. Turns out the previous owner left all the mods so I now own a stage 3+ R for just around the price they went for brand new

Got my 2019 in September with less than 11k miles, kbb was around $44k but paid $52k. Turns out the previous owner put in over $22k in mods including TE37’s on Michelin PS4S and an EQT Vortex done in house. Currently sitting at 538bhp/468whp & 500 lb-ft with stock internals. Looking forward to taking out some hellcats at the strip!

Just bought a ‘18 mk7.5 r and I’m absolutely in love. I’m 27 coming from a gen 1 MAZDASPEED3 and this feels like a grown up car. It’s the next evolution of the young car guy that wants to have fun on his way to support his family.

Golf R owners are like people from Delaware. They're always around you lurking in the shadows but you forget they're there until boom there's 3 at a 4 way stop staring at you and each other. All have on sunglasses but like the blue reflective ones for fishing. And they love old bay

53-year-old, my last sports car was a convertible GT with a Whipple supercharger… So is this a reverse midlife crisis? I do have to admit so far is the most fun I’ve had out of any car I’ve owned in my years of existence. PS stage 2 APR.

Can't forget excessive hand braking in the snow and launching with the cheapest summer tires so you get hella spin and can't stop

Probably younger engineers, decent amount of cash but wants a reliable and practical daily that's got a lot of tuning potential. Also, willing to bet he's pushing quite a bit more torque than 320 crank. Most stage 1 tunes on these cars will knock that up to around 360-380 ft/lbs at the tire. GTI's have a very similar torque comparison, since they're only fwd but are on a smaller turbo. I'd say at least 350 to the wheels for him though, even if it is a conservative tune.
The type of person that would purchase the Volkswagen R is: a person that has owned 9 VW'S in a life time, knows that it's a Bargain when compared to its sister brand: Audi RS3.
LMFAO this is frighteningly accurate...I even gave the RS3 two chances. Except for the noise itself there was nothing to 'truly' gain for the significant difference in cost.

I've had a 2015 manual wrx limited a manual mk7 golf r with apr stage1 high torque tune ( you will need that clutch btw)and now a new flappy paddle m2 competition.
Love my m2comp but for the money the golf r is very very good .
I was working at my local VW dealership in the service department when we first say the GTI "R" which over the next few model years morphed into the Golf R. Over the years I was amazed to see how much the car "matured" as well as it's owner profile. In the beginning the R was the purest form for the VW enthusiast and very much kept it's owners linked to the local scene. Over the years, I would definitely say the R lost touch with the younger enthusiast crowd and went for the more mature crowd. This video is soooo on point and highlights exactly the type of person that drives a Golf R these days. Cheers to great content boys!

The Golf R specifically is for the GTI's boss, if we take the GTI as the fun everyday mans car that's quirky still fun to daily and enjoy. The R is simply the guy that's trying to be just above all that. Sensible because its AWD and that makes driving "safer" and not "fun", toned down looks (my opinion here, the only thing it has going here is the color way option, well it did, RIP 8), its more subtle, its normally kept fairly stock to keep the resale and the owner probably make a heavy point of keeping it clean. Its the epitome of ADULTING, they took the blue collar guy threw a suit on him and called it a day. (Also he didn't have enough for the Audi or BMW).
Golf R buyers want understated, fast and practical/usability pretty much the same as the GTI and you can’t put a age time stamp on these buyers because they could be 20 to 50’s and even 60’s if they still have the driving spirit left in them.

It's me, I am that guy. I drove a 2008 Audi A3 Quattro S line. Basically the Golf R. I sold it when I hit 190k miles. It was my favorite car ever. Great gas mileage, peppy, and it handled great. The only thing I didn't like about it was the DSG. Granted, the DSG was amazing, but there is nothing like rowing gears. They are excellent for commuting and highway driving, which I do every day, and you can carve the corners and have a spirited ride in your commuter car on the weekend. Not to mention you get that VW/Audi engineering and comfort.
I will own one with a 6 speed. It is only a matter of time. I will buy it new if I have to.

Had a Mk4 Golf for my first car then went to an E90 335i. I must have had a sensible moment when I bought my Mk7.5 Golf lol. It just does everything really well with no major drawbacks. E90 was great but seats didn't go down and the boot hatch was small. Longer than the Golf so less choice of parking spaces. Doesn't really go in snow either.
The R gives me the same, if not better performance. The automatic is way less annoying in start/stop traffic and as a result is a more comfortable daily. Averaging about 30MPG (UK) over my E90's 22. The 4wd means you can actually use the power with confidence and not have to be so mindful of the rear end kicking out (which is both a good and a bad thing at times)
Only thing I changed was to ditch the stock Cadiz wheels for matte graphite Pretoria and went with gloss black mirrors instead of the questionable silver ones. Looks good against a white car. Also installed the helix amp/sub which has made the stereo sound great
The only thing it doesn't beat the N54 powered 335i in (and don't think it will even with a new exhaust) is engine sound. Can't have it all though
The Helix amp/sub is that AFTERMARKET or upgrade package from VW 🤔
@@3for4PA Yes, it's an aftermarket part by German audio company Helix, specifically made for the Golf 7(but they also have solutions for other brands). You can order it from a VW dealership, part number 000051419B
If you like things to be OEM, the subwoofer goes in the spare wheel well (so is hidden and doesn't take up any space) and even has a badge on it saying its an original VW accessory
On my R I had to remove the spare wheel because the wheel well is smaller than usual due to the rear diff. On other models you can fit it on top of the spare wheel if you buy a longer bolt and remove the feet on the sub (so I hear). There is also a variant of this with a long rectangular subwoofer that goes in the boot like normal if you want to keep your spare wheel. I have roadside cover and also a can of tire fix. When I replace my tires I think I will go run flat just as a precaution
You could also order it part only and fit it yourself. It's not a difficult install but you may need to rent a programmer from forum users or ebay to make sure the DSP is set to the right car. You may need some tools to re-pin the connector (2 wires for power). Everything else is handled by the harness. It takes the speaker output, amps/processes it and sends it back to the original speakers
If you are thinking of changing speakers then I probably wouldn't do this as it's tuned for the original speakers and will likely sound worse with speakers that have a different frequency response
This is for the base system. Not fender or dynaudio
I believe fender and dynaudio already have subs in the spare wheel so should be easy to tell which you have

I feel old because I love the look of this R. Favorite color, but I would drop the black wheels and throw bronze or silver on. Anthracite might be a bit too monotone but I'd like to see it.
The golf r is definitely worth $30-40k still especially with its competitors and their resale value. It holds better than some cars too!
In my area the people who are driving the Golf that come to the auto parts store that I work at are one of three stereo types: 1) Old people who were sold the expensive option and don't even know that they have a nice car 2) Hippy types that some how have money while looking like that have literally no money 3) Mid 20s person who loves car shows and clout but can't afford any mods cause they just spent all their money on the car... I have yet to see a modified Golf pull up to my place of work but would LOVE to see more modified cars - Don't even see aftermarket rims tires or suspension on these which you can conveniently find on fitment industries ;)

The MK7 platform/MQB is great value and has great modification support. A built GTI will likely beat a built R on the track simply because of weight and ability to carry speed in corners. However if youre looking for something to chop your mates, civics or wrxs at the lights all day an R is probably the route youll wanna take. One thing that keeps the GTI/R/any VW bound at the hip like a siamese twin is its love for consuming water pumps/thermostats.
Water pumps on these are notorious for going out. Almost like clockwork before 50k miles. Had mine pressure tested and it failed. Warranty covered it. Would have been $600 for pump and thermostat. Bought my 2018 7.5 DSG new and still have it. Hoping for something different that I'll like in the 8.5 R.
Just bought a stage 2 ready (besides downpipe for inspection reasons) mk7golf R with 50k on it for 30k. Sometimes I regret it due to its original sticker price, but it’s my first car purchased on my own and I love it dearly. Can’t wait to downpipe it and make it a monster :) I get compliments all the time and I even have made friends at car meets from it, which is the best part.
I absolutely love my MK7 golf R!!! Most underrated Hot Hatch ever produced! I took it a little to far but have never been the type to hold back. My MK7 is fully built with a G35 1050 turbo on it. The car makes a bit over 700 WHP. This car is still dally driven. Very reliable and a blast to drive especially when putting most super can in the rear view mirror. Definitely still worth 40k.

I try to convince myself I have some sort of class (I don't) so I purchased an S3. I really enjoyed the interior space more then the MK7.5R. Got it to 475whp-ish and high 10's in the 1/4. It was a fun little sleeper.
Except the s3 has a smaller interior and less headroom. Not the car for taller guys, the Golf R is
49 year old male owner of a FBO MK7 GTI APR Stage 2 looking to trade for a Mk7.5 R in DSG in the near future. Enthusiast that has owned a few air cooled in the 90s, a G60 Corrado for most of the 2000s, and drove a FBO MK5 GTI daily for a few years before the MK7.

I have a 2017 r, full stage 2 kit 360whp 337wtq car is amazing super fast and fun to drive, still easily use as my daily to rip in to the office.
The only thing ive noticed after 5 years of ownership its small in terms of cargo space. Its just me and my wife but a trip to costco and the back is full.
Performance wise these cars scream! 10-20k in bolt ons and tunes you can get supercar power for 60-70k all in car and upgrades.

I’d get a charger 392 over this. Basically same money and nearly 500 horsepower and rwd plus V8 snarl
I did test drive a gti and it was a fun car to toss around. If I had a wife I’d want her to have a gti or R while I take the V8 rwd muscle car.
I will say the appeal of the R is power to weight, tuning and the sleeper appeal of killing stuff like my challenger 1320 off the line. In the quarter and beyond the muscle will overwhelm it but it’s still a cool little car.

LOL I bought this exact year and color (but with DSG) in 2018, it was one year old with 20K, it was in brand new condition with no modifications. I paid $30K for it, $32,500 OTD at some Lexus dealership. I would not pay $40K for one brand new, never mind 4 years old with a bunch of miles on it! I think people have lost their minds, I paid cash for it and could afford to pay a lot more, I just refuse to do it.
Car prices are in an absurd bubble right now, I think it will eventually pop in a big way. Either that or hyper inflation will make flipping burgers at Mc D's pay six figures. At some point something will have to give, pay will have to go way up, or prices with revert. I suspect more of the latter will occur, but you never know.
I like the car but I also did a lot of modifications (way more than Rick), front end grip/turn in was the main fix for me, front camber and caster transform the handling. I have drive several Type R's on track, with the right mods the Golf R is actually better. That and stage 2 power, pedal tuner, some brake mods, and it is the perfect sleeper.
I would say that the middle aged father type is spot on with the R. GTI's are definitely late teens to mid twenties. I, however, being 36 own a '17 WRX. My car is probably something I should have owned 10 years ago. So many customization that I've done to it, not to mention the loud as hell muffler delete.

I guess I'm the R buyer who has always believed that VW made the highest quality hot-hatch. Now I can afford it and maybe even afford to add some mods.
Here almost a year later and paid 39k CAD… the market for these reallllly doesn’t depreciate
I had a MK7 R and the manual transmission was a mushy mess, the clutch slips with just a piggy back tune (should have bought the DSG) but other than that, it was an amazing little car. I put a Diesel Geek shift linkage on it and it made a HUGE difference but that clutch at 9k miles when I traded it in was just a slipping mess on the interstate with the JB4 piggy back.
I traded it for a Scatpack Charger and got a lot more room in the back for those car seats, a WAAAAAAY better exhaust note, much better looking (though it was an attention magnet for all the good and bad reasons) and I was kinda surprised that even when on the interstate, the R didn't give me that great of fuel economy... about 26 mpg cruising at around 77 and the dodge with cylinder deactivation would get about the same.
I don't regret the trade but it was a step down in overall build quality but the ZF transmission in the Dodge was absolutely awesome and I think if I had ordered the R with a DSG, I'd have kept it. At the time we were extremely sour on VW's automatic transmissions as we had just replaced my wife's A4 transmission and despite them being in a class action lawsuit for them slipping and my wife's A4 having one of the lawsuit transmissions, we didn't get a replacement because our VIN number was AFTER the lawsuit was filed and not eligible so we came out of pocket about $1000 for a replacement from a pull-a-part and indie mechanic.
I sold the Dodge during the pandemic for about what I paid for it brand new and am 2 years into a 3 year Tesla Model 3 Performance lease. The power is absolutely stupid but here I am already getting some considerations together for next year when I have to give my Tesla back and the MK8 R is on my list along with perhaps a low mileage RS3 or possibly an M340i... who knows what I'd end up with but if dealer's chill out by next year on the Golf prices, I may be back in an R. It was incredibly practical, well built and after spending 2 years with an almost 100% touch screen based car, I feel like transitioning to the MK8's infotainment system won't be a big deal for me.
Not paying for gas and getting free charging at my office as our CEO drives a Tesla and installed a charger is nice but Tesla prices have gone up to the point that I feel they're no longer worth what they are going for.

Funny that in the used market, the Audi S3 is the "bargin" choice (that's what I got instead)
I had a 2019 S3 and enjoyed it QUITE(!) a lot...but missed driving a manual daily so I sold my stg1/TCU tuned S3 and bought an untuned manual R.
The S3 was $41k with about 36k on it and the R was $38k with 31k on it.
No regrets...except for the MMI knob and the B&O haha. (also staring at the S3 was nice)
