The Volkswagen Golf GTI has an amazing reputation as the perfect all around car for many around the world. We recently revisited the Mk4 VW GTI and talked about it's impact in car culture, the tuner scene, and much more. However what if you took the GTI, made it all wheel drive, and upgraded literally everything? That's the Volkswagen Golf R. For today's in depth review we take this modified Golf R around the mountains and see if it's really worth the extra cash to upgrade from the Mk7 Golf GTI to the VW Golf R. With it's drivetrain being shared with the Audi S3 I had extremely high expectations from all of the great things I've heard about this car. So does it live up to the hype? Let's go for a drive and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!

DSG FARTS ENGAGED!
Intro song?
So annoying.
they make the golf r in a manual too David
I drive a DCT E92 M3... they sound like a dog sneezing on my car haha
Those paddles are an upgrade part. They are plastic stock. Those are racingline paddles (or clones)
Oh, David, those paddles are aftermarket, mk7R’s have plastic paddles
Womp womp.
Actually from aliexpress to be exact
@@jralphroman Or they could be racing lines if the owner ponies up the $230
Yup, got mine on amazon for $20. Same metal construction as the racingline ones but 10x less
@@Commonginger got mine for 12 😊
The R is packing hell of a punch, right!?
We fell in love with the MK7 R during its very first production year. Thank you for the great review and feel free to reach out if ever you decide to own one.
Cheers from Montreal!
Unitronic Corporation Inc. y’all have some pretty shitty tunes TBH United Motorsports is 100000000X better shit even IE
Oolivas006 I disagree

Come to Belgium and review my 340hp volvo V70R from 1997
I agree!! I'll let him review my mk6 dual cam 2.5 jetta if it doesnt put him to sleep 😂
Agreed if he liked the golf r wait till he drives that
Yes ! I know of multiple guys who are running big turbo kits on their inline 07k 2.5l rabbits and jettas ! Those cars once boosted are BEASTS!!
Volkswagen Golfs Will Always Be Dope, GTI, R, Whatever It Is!
*Laughs in regular golf*
I love my mk7 Tsi to death, my favorite car i've owned.
@@mhersi2dude TSIs are very underrated
Those 1.8T base models are up there too. Soo much ability to tune these TSI engines
You seen what the new mk8 looks like tho? 😐
Dude you are KILLING it with all the reviews lately, love the variety and frequency!
“I won’t forgive you for diesel gate” *sitting here in my straight piped tdi before work*
I've been looking for a TDI so I can roll baby coal.
Paddle are aftermarket, comes with plastic ones from factory ;)
charlesdrums thanks for letting me know! At least they feel nice 😂
@@ThatDudeinBlue yeah there are lots of companies who make metal paddles for the R :)
Got my metal paddles shipped to Australia for 18 bucks (aud)
Lol I forgot to mention that to you David! Sorry lol I didn’t get much sleep the night before :P
TheGiant Gaming these are the racingline “knockoffs” I got from amazon for 25 bucks lol the originals are literally like 250
I just freaking love the R. It blends everything sooo well, that engine is good af with the DSG and... I really hope I will buy it one day
Making me miss my MK7, recently traded it in for a scat pack charger. Mine was a GTI but it was FBO with a custom tune by sneekytuned. The MK7 responds so well to the basics. You can do a downpipe, intercooler, and a tune and you have a little street beast capable good mpg and still a 4 door hatch. Minus the water pump the engine is pretty damn strong too.
Just got an E30 tune from him for my GTI. Thing pulls like a freight train man
Sneekytuned ftw
What’s your take on having owned the GTI and now the Charger?
MQB platform is amazing, love my mk7. Also sneekytuned
joesforspeed they’re totally different. It was actually my second MK7 GTI, I had a 2015 manual SE, went to a 370Z, and then a 2016 autobahn DSG with DCC. The charger is a brute and all around bigger except for head room. My GTI was great but resale tanked and I was in a good position to trade and I absolutely love the design language of dodge these days. If I could’ve, I would’ve loved to have kept the GTI and get the charger as a true weekend car but if I kept the GTI I probably would’ve gone challenger or C6 Z06. Both are great in their own way. The V8 sound and instant power is intoxicating but I do miss 28 psi of sneekytuned goodness paired with the DSG. Oh and the fender audio system in the GTI is 10x better than the Beats system in the charger. The main reason for the trade was I wanted good power without voiding the warranty and still have four doors and a good trunk. The Chevy SS was my only other option but they’ve become a bit dated and they’re going for really high prices still. The charger has more power, mine has the heated and cooled leather/alcantara so it’s comfortable, still has brembos, and factory bilstein suspension. They look way better too but the SS can handle boost better and doesn’t have some of the valvetrain issues of the dodge. Long term goal with the scat is a basic cam with a better valve setup when the warranty is nearing its end.
Golf: is the most common car in the european tuner scene and in general
David: its overlooked
Golf: am i a joke to you?
It’s overlooked in the states compared to the Type R and Focus RS.
@@ThatDudeinBlue it's overlooked because VW reliability and general pita to work on maybe?
The golf r specifically not just the golf in general.
Yeah brotha in metro America, atleast Atlanta, I usually only see maybe 1 golf r every couple days maybe week, even throughout downtown you don’t see many! I’ve actually yet to see more then one, stanced at all!! Maybe I don’t get out a lot idk
@@VS666 You obviously have never owned a MK7+ Golf. They are amazing. A complete evolution from the previous models. I waited to get MK7 just because of the leap in reliability and potential.
@1:46 "288hp which doesn't sound like a lot"...........cries in miata
But golf r weight.
Hey David thanks for uploading on my birthday best gift ever!

"Everything about it pretty much fulfills most people's needs in life." ThatDudeInBlue on a VW interior.
yes?
TEN THIRTY ONE and?
I take it you haven't been in a mk7, by head and shoulders the best interior in its class.
69th like
TEN THIRTY ONE you’ve obviously never been inside a R lol
I have a MK7.5R Stage 2 Unitronic ECU/TCU. 400HP in a 3300lb car is insane. It has easily been my favourite daily that I've owned for the past 2 years. Also, off the line it emberasses so many cars. I literally leave M4's dumbfounded in anything but perfect weather conditions on a 20'C day. I'll be sipping on my espresso while the M4'S traction light keeps blinking HAHA
Fuckin decent bud. I’d love to do a retro fit of the digital dash and updated infotainment screen on my mk7 R
Lil_ Danny904 I think that’s 100% doable. Check out VWVortex
I've gone from a 20th anniversary MK4 GTi, to a MK5 R32, and now my daily is a MK7 Golf R.
Very minor upgrades on the R, Cold air intake, Revo tune, coilovers, exhaust cat delete and some fresh BBS CH-R wheels.
Literally the perfect daily sleeper car.
First mk4 now mk7 R my life is complete
Hey man watched you PR VIDEOS what an amazing journey. Have fun keep shifting and keep it clutch brother
I have an MK6 Golf "R" with a 6 speed. Best vehicle decision I've ever made. With a good tune(IE), 3" downpipe, performance intake, and upgraded spark pack/spark plugs, the car runs smooth and makes close to 350hp RELIABLEY.
Nothing wrong with the dsg. But this thing with a manual transmission is a riot. Way more fun.
MaxSpeed agreed
So damn true
Disagree 🤷♂️
@@FZ6Lucas that's ok lol we're entitled to our preferences. Rowing the gears yourself may not be as fast as the dsg but imo it's damn sure more fun. Especially if you're driving the car on the street more than anywhere else
Lol this argument has been beat to death on the forums. Lets not bring our family issues to this channel
I have a Unitronic stage 2 tune on my 2016 MK7 GTI. Just hit over 100k! I will say that even though I’ve enjoyed my Unitronic tune, APR and others are probably gonna give you higher power numbers. Still highly satisfied with Unitronic though.
One of the best hatches ever created the MK6 came with to many problems ones before 2014. Mk7 gti and R are insanely great. I’m planning to purchase a Mk7r by next year
I love my 7R! Thanks for the review David!
That’s it. I’m selling my MK7 GTI and getting an R. Love these cars so much.
LOVE my Mk7 R. 6-speed is so much fun, need to start modifying asap though!
1. Aftermarket Pedal Shifter
2. Mk7.5 taillights
I think it’s a fact more than an opinion but the GTI is more fun than the R.
I would say they both have there strong point and week point it more of what you want in a car between the GTI and the R. me I went with the Golf R because I got tired of spinning the front tires every time I took off of a stop light in my 2013 beetle turbo with manual trans with the k04 turbo swap from APR (basically a MK6 GTI in a different body and slightly different suspension.)
ps I went with the beetle because i have always have liked them and I love sleepers.
Those paddles are ECS paddles if I am not mistaken! Very nice ones at that, replaces the stock ones instead of being cheap stick on. And I agree with pretty much everything you said. When I had the chance to drive one I loved it. It almost launches GTR like. You just can't out-shift that DSG. But the focus RS does have a great manual, and launches are a bit more rewarding in that because you are 100% in control of screwing it up. The Type R? Can't count it. It is most excellent, but it lacks the AWD to make it out of the hole as quick as the R or the RS for that matter. The Type R does almost make you forget you are in a front wheel drive only car though, it corners like a boss!
I just bought a MK7 Golf R, blue, Dsg and its FAST! love it
I have a mk7.5 Golf … Alltrack. Not exactly the cool version, but throw it into a corner and it's still a Golf. The grip on off-ramps is incredible. Plus, it's the 6 speed manual!
Pretty sure paddles are aftermarket and they come from factory with plastic ones but still cool tho how easy it is to change to premium paddles
I just recently got a mk7 from a used car dealership. Previous owner took very good car of it, he put in an after market turbo, tuner and a bigger exhaust, it’s my first nice car I’ve ever had I love it so much.
I love it when you do Volkswagen reviews! Really awesome to see what other vw owners have done to their car
I own a mk7 TSI, it has a custom made catback exhaust and 18 inch Niche DFS wheels with Pilot Sport 4 tyres. Not much for HP but the torque is enough to have some fun.
Love this beast! One of the few cars I would actually have in auto over manual, especially DSG! Also really loving these next level type reviews on top of each other, from lesser model GTi to this!
I was going to get the Golf R but then I realized the GTI Autobahn does over 220 hp, Looks more sporty, and has the plaid interior seats. The GTI is just too legendary.
David's sentence structure:
"The ride quality is really smooth, but at the same time it's not bumpy at all"
It's massively popular throughout the world. "Overlooked" is not a word I'd use when describing the Golf R
Great review, man. I have a 2019 R and this review was SPOT on.
The paddles are aftermarket, I have the same ones, and if the only complaint about the interior is the info screen and the dash, like at the 7.5 R 😉 p.s. I have one
This is my car in the video, and, I could retrofit the same infotainment screen and the gauge cluster as the 7.5 R but, it’s pricy
Just recently come across your channel and subscribed. I have to say I really like your approach to cars in this channel. Almost gives me the feeling of what it's like to give the cars I've always wanted to hell... I appreciate that sir
The Golf R is a lot of things, "Overlooked" isn't one of them.
Yes it is
@@ThisIsntMeGaming not in the uk it's not....
@@benwaldron541 in the us it is. And even when people do notice it, they seem to think it's a gti and not an r
Angelo Davis and it’s not a baby Audi either, VW is the parent company that owns Audi.
They are everywhere in the UK. Where I am it's full of golf R and Audi's. Bored of seeing them lol
Dude. You gotta say what's modified and what's stock. Like the paddles, those are aftermarket, not stock. Also you said the CTR has its turbo built into the head, so does the golf R. The CTR with an exhaust sounds good too
I just traded my Sentra SE R SpecV for a MK7 six speed manual. This thing is fast and fun.
I remember first watching you reveal the smurf mustang when you just got it. Now you’re at a million subs congrats my guy
Nice review! These cars will last as well. I still drive my 2007 GTI in the summer. I bought it in 2007 used.
I would be torn between the r and the r32.....unironic does some amazing things with the r32 as well.....vdubs are just amazing cars
That engine will always be a sweet heart of mine. Almost as nice as the one in my GT350 haha maybe just on sound.
R32 all day! The VR6 is from Jesus himself
In Australia we beef these cars up. There's just as many built GTI's / R's as there are built Japanese cars
In Aus most golfs tacky. Aus doesn't know how to do golfs. They're all on stock wheels with crackle tunes
I wouldn't call the golf R overlooked lol its the OG hot hatch before the civic type R and focus RS were the hype
Ctr are the hype since 1998
Outside of North America
Focus rs are so much fun though
Love my 7R. Perfect daily car
If your not gonna be doing a lot of track time the the golf r is perfect but if your looking for a car for more corners and track then look some where else. The golf r is very top heavy so you will feel very heavy up top
The only thing letting down the Golf R is the Factory breaks!!!!! I love my stage two golf and after tracking it at mid Ohio but the breaks blew up pretty much, with full pads and proper fluids!!!!!!! BBK is a must and proper pads. Keep the car serviced and it’s super reliable-oh and you for sure look Down and go OH! At the speed. Caught myself at 140 once and just cruising!!!
LOVE my golf R!! Best all around car out there imo
tcu intercooler gotta get me one of those
Paul Vega lol was looking for a comment on that
Man if I lived closer I would totally let you review my Mk6. It would be awesome to see you review all the generations of the Gti and R versions. Especially a mk4 r32
I'm an S550 dude but I really like that VW
It’s not underlooked the Golf R is a beast, I rather have one than an audi
Looks like the owner added some carbon bits to the interior. The little bit by the gauge cluster is aftermarket
a friend of mine hit 110 on the on ramp the other day...he was very surprised when he looked down
You need to drive the mk4 r32
If you are ever in Houston Texas, ill let you review my fully built hybrid turbo 2019 Golf R DSG
I have a fbo focus st i love it to death but i have teat driven to buy an RS and i couldnt see the value over my ST and my ST felt faster..i teat drove an R and omg i fell in love and there way lore potential to go fast especially with the dsg
Big turbo Mk7 Golf R running full E85 with a built motor here :)
now you just gotta review an r32 turbo
:D
My man, a TCU intercooler? I think you said it was a unitronic intercooler at the beginning lol
Did the is38 turbo in my mk7 gti. Pretty damn fast, but from a dig is where its weakness is at. Next car, RS3.
I have golf r estate its an amazing car
In South Africa you see more of these (GTI and R) more than you do the normal TSI.
The veloster N is also a hot hatch. IT's mean!
Also, this is the second car model that I own that you've done a review on. Frist one being the 3000GT VR-4.
Reviews are getting more interesting, keep up the good work David
DO MORE VW/Audi’s PLEASE
Definitely need more vw on this channel.
I have a MK7 R and out of all the cars ive ever owned. I dont think ill ever get rid of my R lol
I want a golf so bad...every person I’m subscribed too has done a video recently it seems like ugh. But..it keeps my head up and pushes me too keep saving!
If you can, save up for a mk7, or take a look at the upcoming mk8, same platform and engine used they are both amazing with the dsg's.
Truly the coolest practical daily driver ever made so far, the best is still the Mk6 TDI for daily.
Thanks again David! I find it very interesting that you say the Golf R's drivetrain has more personality than the CTR as almost any other journalist/reviewer would probably disagree.
Finally a review of German econo car 👍However, while the sound on the Type R is less than the stock Golf R, the car in the review sound modified- do not a fair point.
Hopefully VW will make the next gen Golf R with a better handling and up to the task of the Focus RS & Golf R. This is a great all around because the AWD, with no AWD, GTI feels away better steering feel wise & the iconic hatch.
Love my MK7 Golf R - With COBB Tune.
love this review
Glad to see a MK7R video but I wish you reviewed mine. Now I’m sad :(
I'm a Volkswagen guy i love the mk4 the most. But the golf r are awesome
I think I want this over the S3 now. Ugh..!
love the blue on this
Wouldn't say it's a ''unique'' point having the DSG gearbox, since the stronic in the audi S3 is the exact same system, and the Seat Leon Cupra in Europe also runs the exact same gearbox.
I love the Golf R but I still love the R32. Its just a pure car! you should drive my R32
This was a good one. Those paddles aren't stock champ, I wish!!
Those pops make the car riced-out. Other than that perfection
That's too bad you don't get the leon cupra. I like that one better
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOF A GOLF R REVIEW
wouldn't be a TDIB video without the quality B roll 👌
Hey David you should try a VW golf r34 those things are pretty awesome
i have a mk7 R, with a tune its got all the go you need for daily use, its comfortable and the DSG means its not a chore in traffic. i would definitely suggest a DSG tune so the shift logic in normal mode is a middle ground between factory and sport (tries to stick around 2000rpm instead of 1000-1500rpm) so its not trying to exit corners in 5th or its doing 4000rpm in sport. 10/10 would recommend.
VW 2.0L i4 is a stroker motor. That's why it doesn't rev. Atleast the k20 is square.
Buddy has a mk7.5 R with a unitronic tune (manual as well) and its absolutely stunning. And the interior is much better than the mk7.0
For y'all who haven't seen it there's a vid on RUclips (won't link in TDIB's comment section) where a 75 year old Grandfather here in the UK built a 600hp Golf R. Do a search I'm not gonna directly advertise someone's vid in someone else's comments, just doesn't sit right with me :). Anyways it's mind blowing how easy the R is to modify for 600 + hp!
Now get one with an actual tune like EQT or 5150.
I’ll take the manual even if it’s slower. More engaging and reliable overtime
Dinesh E I own both, and the DSG is pretty reliable if it’s taken care of. Previous owner beat mine and i had to replace the clutch packs, but after that i keep routine maintenance and even after multiple launches it’s given me no trouble.
@@buggzieandmuggzie6980 does the manual "feels" faster?
@@thereisa6inthename I work at a VW dealership and drive both quite often. The auto definitely feels quicker primarily cause of how fast it shifts
@@thereisa6inthename Manual has less power loss which is good for in gear acceleration. DSG braps off gears and is faster from a stop every time.
Same
I traded in my 2016 MK7 for a 2018 MK7.5 and I regret it...
MK7.5 doesn't have the front light cleaning spray nozzles.
and get this... I doesn't have the sensor to tell you your windshield washer level is low like every other basic Golf available...
Last, the clutch issues have not been fixed at all with the 7.5 update
Notes: I'm in Canada 2018 Manual Golf R
I doubt anyone's told you this, but the factory paddles are plastic. In Nissan's they are magnesium
I have a MK7 GTI and I'm thinking about trading it in soon for an R with DSG! They're insanely affordable too
I would trade my gti for an R in a heartbeat
Do it, I loved my MK5 before it nickle and dimed me while the head liner fell out. They really fixed the issues with the MK7. Haldex just needs a filter change and fluid flush. Those parts almost never break.
GTI is great but if FWD wheelspin annoys the fuck out of you then R is the way to go! Owned both
I think stage 2 these push around 400 hp crank. Love these cars
Stage 2 is around 400 hp
Imad S ah even better then.... basically for downpipe and tune these things make sweet power
@@jerrys7261 Haha yeah that's all it takes, intercooler is recommended too though
