      With these new details about the engine, the car itself...and the dimension change you'd need to make a 288 GTO clone...I've decided to go easy on you, mate.😆🤣Regardless of these "low miles", I'd say you have a very lovely stock of excellent parts you could sell on to fund whatever project YOU FEEL PASSIONATE about and really want to make. Aloha!👍

      Scott, a year ago over here in the state of Maine right in my town at coPart There was a Monty out eight that went up for a bid, I was too late to figure out which of my friends was eligible to bed for me one of them actually did try for it and he stopped at 10,000 so it’s all for 10,000 went to a breaker in Michigan and a friend who works at corporate said they tried to start it and when they put the battery in the tray the battery fell right through the bottom it was so rusty it had been left out for 20 years in the New England weather so seeing the deal you got on that car is mind blowing, I’m sure whoever got that Mondeo will probably get $30,000 or more out of the parts, I would be gutted to see that done to you at 3:28 but it just goes to show what an amazing deal you got

      Depending on the casting material that engine is totally worth repair. and as i said in my last comment survivors to me are worth way more than mods or clones. Just my opinion. But to be honest like you said you can get paid big in parting it. I also said what some of your other commenters have that gear box locked upo and exploded taking everything with it.. I do however dont think that car was ever wrecked. i think something was dropped on that front clam and they just cut the rest off.

      Yep, totally agree. The stretching of the chassis changed my perspective on it too (even though the 288 is my bedroom poster car). Restore it to stock seeing as it’s such a low mileage car. Failing that, break it for parts to contribute to the other projects.

I do NOT like taking engines out with them at all. 100% it will be cheaper to restore the 328 and sell it on. Would make a nice profit also. Get all these side projects done so we can finish the BBi and start the F40 build. Hope your new neighbor gets the fire burning for that build!

    I was in the 288 GTO camp, but after hearing some of you comments about what's required, now support a "sympathetic restore". Not a BBi level restoration, but (almost) a bare minimum restore. It was so cheap, I say maximise the profit by spending as little as you can to make it presentable for someone to take on. Having said all that, *PLEASE* don't start it yet! Crack on with the BBi and finish the 308.... please don't become another channel with half a dozen projects on the go that never get finished! You've still got the 348 lurking somewhere too... and an old 911! 🙂

    I was in camp 288, but if you need to turn the engine and extend the chassi it sounds though - perhaps if you fix up the engine and exchange it for a Monadial T, 348, 355 or 360 unit it will be easier...
    On the otherhand the 328 are nice car, the interior seems gold in this one and I want to see the BBi done...

      I am in a current relationship with a Mondial T cab., And it is so much more reliable than my old 308 is considerably faster and though it isn’t as pretty, I always trust it to run and take a beating so I would say the 348 engine would be a great sweetheart if the 328 did not work out

  • @paulmanta

    Flywheel could well have shattered, I have had it happen and it causes huge destruction. Look around the engine bay to see if any bits have gone into the surrounding areas at speed and caused damage.

  • @itsnevo8757
    @itsnevo8757 8 месяцев назад +2

    Well as cool as a 288 GTO tribute would be, I think if you ever really want to get the F40 project going, it would probably be better to restore the 328 and then sell it to fund the F40 project. If that 328 engine can be saved, then the 328 would be a great candidate for restoration.
    I’m sure also if you built a 288 GTO tribute, you would probably want to keep it.
    If the 328 was a GTB then it would be less work but because it’s a GTS with the targa top, that would be a lot more work, especially if you have to lengthen the chassis another 100mm also.

  • @stuffa01
    @stuffa01 8 месяцев назад +4

    With the 328 market sky high right now, I imagine you would have a line of guys excited to own one at a fair down to earth price. might be worth restoring to a nice daily driver to flip for some cash flow to use on your sexier projects...

    Repairing broken stud bosses in alloy is no problem for a good welder with a proper TIG machine or even a spool gun) and the repaired boss can be drilled out and thread inserts installed. In the past I've done jobs like this for customers for less than $250 USD, including installing the thread inserts (parts supplied by customer of course).

    Great new unit, Scott. Ideal for the winter months. Have you checked the engine bay for evidence of a rouge flywheel? If it let loose there should be plenty of damage as evidence. I’d say repair the car and sell it on. Will make a great project for us all the follow, and you should make a nice profit to prime the next project.

  • @Fusionfabs
    @Fusionfabs 8 месяцев назад +2

    Engine looks pretty good, and certainly worth fixing. To get the bolts out of the crank, just weld some bolts to them, and undo them. The heat will loosen any locktite off and it wil save drilling them and getting swarf everywhere.
    As for the ally casings. I have repaired aluminum casings like that before. There are lots of different approaches to it, depending on the load bearing of the threads that have been pulled and whether you are stripping the engine completelty or not.

  • @31144
    @31144 8 месяцев назад +1

    Those snapped bolts in the crank confirm what I said in the unveil video, the flywheel made a bid for freedom, also it's impact damage on the intermediate casing that is stopping it from sliding off the gearbox input shaft, in fact I thought I saw ring gear marks on the damaged bit of that boss, well worth rebuilding, those snapped bolts will come out easily with an eze-out due to the shearing and not being seized, those broken block holes are another easy fix, TIG weld up with a steel bolt screwed into the good bit of thread, the Ali weld won't stick to a steel bolt so it will build the missing casing up accurately enough to then re-drill and helicoil (much stronger helicoil thread in Ali anyway), it's a shame you are so far away from me ( Cheshire) as I'd love to tackle both those in my workshop 👍

    Congratulations for being the most deserving RUclipsr of a great unit. If GTO really demands that much slicing and dicing. Wait until your ready for creating an F40 clone. Fully restored. This baby beast is still worth a very nice piece of change.

    Great idea getting a Rat cave. We'll done. All of those snapped bolts look ok. Small tap and a reverse drill bit. Be sure you get a high quality bit.

    Amazing video, Scott, !!!!
    Paint the walls, white, smooth over the floor or get rubber matting. I think restore it myself.

    You’ll probably never be able to afford a GTO and you’ll never find a cheaper base car, so this might be the only chance to do the tribute. A tribute f40, GTO and convertible testarossa seems like the ultimate trio for the ratarossa legacy.

    The 288 GTO tribute would be a great project, but if my dream was an F40 of some description id probably go for the quickest option of restore and move on. But if you are considering doing a 288 tribute with it, would it be better to go straight to doing an F40 tribute instead?
    Regardless which route you takee it will undoubtedly be great content👍

    Mmm, a 288GTO and an F40 on the way. I can think of 3 more models that would keep your channel going for a while😂

    I've loved this chanel, and work on my cars on my tight driveway, with limited tools, know how, with inspiration from like minded individuals like yourself, if you can do it, I can do it attitude. Please don't lose the essence of your chanel with this new workshop.

    Nice garage / barn work shop man , even though I said part out that pig in the last vid it is cool to see the motor turn over an since you got the space now doing a GTO tribute would be pretty sweet , maybe you can fit a twin turbo kit on that thing ..
