A cabin air filter is an air purification filter designed to remove the microscopic dust, allergens, pollutants and other particles that come into the passenger cabin of your vehicle through its air vents. A dirty cabin air filter, clogged with dirt, dust, smelly mold and allergens, can also impact the performance of your defroster, heating and AC.

6 years later and this video is still helping people. It was a lifesaver: after spending 30 mins trying put the cover back on unsuccessfully, I watched your video and realized I was putting it on backwards. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Hope this video will still help the Ford Focus owners down the road.
Hah! I feel much better now seeing this comment! I too kept trying to get the cover back on backwards. This is a great video, incredibly clear filming for such a tight spot.
9 years later and it's still awesome. I had the same problem having flipped the cover. The detailed macro-videography and explanations were great!
I'm a mechanic and I have never seen someone so thorough when explaining how to remove and replace parts. I know I don't like to explain things, I just do it.. Most mechanics don't have time. You're awesome.. Good Stuff!! #moomoo97
Thanks for watching and the kind notes. I try to make my videos for DIYers here to know ahead of what they'll be dealing with when working on such task, so hopefully nothing will catch them by surprise.
I've been doing car repairs for over a decade and this was one of the better videos I've seen. Maybe little long-winded, but the detail isn't too excessive. Well done.
Also, worst cabin filter design out of the 9 cars I've had...yikes.
I am not Mr Handyman by any means, but this is a five minute job. This video did the trick, although a bit long. Three key steps..how to access the old, how to remove it, and then maneuvering in the new one was a snap. Thanks for posting
Thanks for watching and the feedback. It really is a 10-minute job max when knowing how to get around that space. This video is long because I intended to give a full instructional video to showcase all the details/pitfalls on how to get it done. So no one will be leaving here guessing. :)
Many thanks from Russia for the detail explanation. The charcoal filter a little bit less flexible than you installed. But by using several strong russian words I successfully did it.
Ivan Sokolkov Dude yes!
Have had my Focus for over 10 years and every couple of years I come back here for a refresher.
Thank you for this video. My dealership was charging me $100 to replace the filter. Now I can do it in 5 mins thanks to you.
Very Cool! Glad to know this video helped you out and save $$ DIYing!
I looked at just about every video on RUclips on how to replace the cabin filter on my 2015 Ford C-Max, and yours is by far the best from start to finish. I'm getting too old to DIY but it's nice to know what my Ford dealer's mechanic has to do to replace the filter. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and your comments is encouraging.
Thank you so much for your video! It is still so so helpful to see how to do this even 9 years later! I’ve never changed my filter in my 2015 ford focus since inheriting it back in 2019. Man oh man is the old filter FILTY!! My lungs thank you for this tutorial 🎉
I spent 15 minutes trying to put the cover back on the wrong way. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful. My local dealer wanted to charge $45.00 for the filter and labor. I saved over $25.00 by doing myself with your video help.
Thanks for watching and nice to know it helped you to save money! Happy DIYing and please do a LIKE to this video. In fairness to your dealer, $45 is not as crazy as other Ford dealers were charging (like over $100+ in some) for the cabin filter replacement.
Such a great video! It took me 5 minutes to change it out, another 5 to put that darn cover back on. Thank you so much! I saved $55 by doing it myself :) very easy thanks to your detailed explanations.
Thanks for watching! Please click LIKE to this video so it'll be easier for other viewers to search it out.
This is the best tutorial I watched on how to do this. The thorough explanations are so helpful for a novice like me, it really put me at ease. You should make more videos!
I don't undestand negative feedbacks to this video. It's useful.
Thanks. This is probably the most helpful "how to" video I've seen. I watched this and was able to replace my cabin air filter in about 10 min. from start to finish. I also loosened the hex holding the vent to the right of the filter cover. This vent can be pushed up and out of the way to gain a little extra space. Great video!
Very helpful. After watching this, I was able to fairly quickly replace my filter. I don't think I would have figured it out without a video like this. Trying to get the filter back in was a trick because of the tight space, but you explained it great. Thanks!
I did ask my oil change place to install new cabin air filter, and they couldn't do it because they said it is 20 mins job. It was supposed to be free installation for me according to the manager before my visit. They do CAFC according to the advertisement, and I even saw they sell cabin air filters. Somehow, they refer me to mechanic behind the oil change shop. I went there, and mechanic said it would be $25 for labor, and it will take about 25 mins duration.
I see this video, and like WTF, this is so Damm easy job, and my car is exactly like this. I end up doing on my own. Thank you very much! I have no idea why mechanic wants to charge me $25
My Haynes manual had me ripping the dashboard apart and pulling the glove box out. I still couldn't figure out how to get at the filter based on their instructions. Your video was quite clear, and I did not have to take the glove box out. Thanks
Thanks for watching, don't forget to LIKE the video. The by-the-book method is quite puzzling, that's why I made this video to show an easy way out.
Great, great video! My dealership is trying to charge me 1 hour labor ($160 USD) for replacing this... Probably the tech does not know how to do this properly...
I watched this video and finished the job in 5 minutes! My T15 screw was missing too. I did not even need any tool to do this.
I will go back and do this myself every time!
Fantastic, please LIKE this video! As for your missing T15 screw, the person who changed your cabin filter didn't bother to put it back in place last time, lousy work!
This was a GREAT video man! Very precise and informative with clear wording, video and verbal instructions. I highly recommend this video as a "do it yourself" for installing an in cabin air filter for a Ford Focus.
This video makes it easy even for a first-time mechanic. I spent more time trying to find a T15 drive to take off the screw than it took to do the installation. The factory "forgot" to put the screw in for the cover, so I didn't need it. As the author states, the "trick" is to put the top in sideways and then rotate it upwards. Then push the bottom slowly and it should pop in. As long as you have the foam sides of the filter towards to front of the car, you are (as the author states) "Golden".
Thanks for sharing and leaving some interesting notes. I'm surprised the factory forgot the T15 screw? Not that it's so important other than aesthetic, but did you have the cabin filter changed by someone else and they didn't bother to put it back?
I do not remember having the dealership replace the filter. They may have. But, the one I removed was pretty dirty. Recommended replacement is 15-20K. I did it at 26K. I don't put many miles on the car. Great job with the video. You have helped scores of people.
Thank you. I don't think I could have done this without the video - very poor design. I decided to check the filter because my air conditioning drain, which is also in that area, was plugged with a screw and was leaking (the dealer said they fixed it, it kept leaking, I found the screw clogging the drain...). The cabin air filter was damp, possibly from that leak or just from being near the soaked carpet, so I'm glad I changed it. Excellent video!
Thank you for being detailed. Makes it better😊, after this I'm replacing the ignition switch cause the key has to be pushed in to start. The dealership wanted to charge me $200 so I bought the part for $40 and viewed video looks simple like 4 bolts and should be fun. Thanks again
Thanks for watching and the comments. I'm also frustrated about how dealers were charging on things which seems straightforward to fix, trying DIY with the detailed video seems like a good way to contribute.
Best car maintenance video I've seen and I've seen a lot of them
Awesome! Very thorough! I'm impressed on how you took the videos in such close quarters - working on filter and also taking video. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for such a careful, thorough, and pleasant guide. It corresponds precisely to the 2013 C-Max, too. Can't imagine how you got your hand with the tool, the light, and the camera all up in there so well!
i would just like to say thanks for the info on how to change the cabin filter. i have a 2013 and i changed the filter after watching your video. my filter was so dirty it makes all the difference in the world sense i changed it. thanks again it only took me 5 mins.
Great video and extremely helpful. I couldn't have changed mine successfully without your help!
Wonderful explanation and walk-through! Very impressive camera work and lighting in the tiny space too! Thank you so very much, you saved my husband and I so much money!
Krystle Criswell Thanks for the kind words and glad to know this video helped!
Great video! Just changed mine in under 10 mins. Excellent description and detail. Mine was a 2013 focus SE. Please do more videos!!!! TWO THUMBS UP!
Thanks for the video. Today is 12/13/17 and I changed mine out yesterday. I watched your video weeks ago and then got everything I needed. Took about 30 min. but got through it ok. Thanks my a/c works better also. Thank you Rebecca Moreno Channelview Texas
That's fantastic!
DEC 2021
Cheers mate for a great video
Ford are complete Bell ends for making it so difficult to get too change the filter in such a award place .
Thanks for this video. Took me 5 minutes to change my 14' Focus filter. Crimping the filter is a very good tip!
I was just tired but replay it and it's very good and wish we had more like yours thanks Mark Franzen
Thank you much for the educational video, Ford made this stupidly aggravating but doing this myself saved me a boatload of money on my 2017 C-Max.
Thank you for the video :) and on an unrelated note, I find your voice very calming haha.
Thanks for sharing us I couldn't find it without you
Hello moomoo97, used your video to change my filter last year. Watching it again for another change! Thanks!
Thank you very much for the time you spent making this video. It was well done. I don't think I could have done it without you. thank you again
Thank you, I would never have gotten the new one in if I hadn't watched you do it.
Thanks, glad my steps helped! A dirty cabin filter will just decrease the air flow to make your AC less efficient (takes much longer to cool), but there's always cold air as long as your AC system is in good shape. Now you've found the ceiling (~37k miles) for the filter change, you can go as high as 20k next time before changing the filter again.
Thanks to your video I was able to change mine in like 3 minutes no joke! 👍👍
thanks, that it a really hard access for what is normally a easy diy. Thanks so much for the good video!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful.
Thank you for the great instructions. You’re very thorough and make it easy to understand
Excellent demonstration. If I had three thumbs to give, they would all be up.
Thanks. Couldn't have figured it out without you!
Thank you so much for video. Really helped. I actually didn't even know I had a cabin filter until I got new air filter today and asked them if car had cabin filter since I couldn't find one. My car had nearly 37,000 miles on it. Air filter not too bad, but wow, cabin filter was nearly black. Surprised AC even worked.
One of the best videos I've ever seen! Great job!!!! 🙂
Thanks a lot for the detailed step-by-step guide.
great technique. Made all the difference in getting this installed myself.
Just what a DIY'er needs. Before this video, I had tried to replace it myself, but did not want to deform the filter as much as Moomoo97 did. Now I feel fine about doing so. Also, did not use the 90 degree technique, which is necessary to make this happen. thank you very much. This is going to save me some money.
Cool, glad this video did help you out and save you $$ too!
Thank you so much for posting this. You made the cabin air filter change very easy for me!
Thanks for sharing such a super detailed demonstration! I will replace my Ford Focus 2008's filter as soon as I buy new filter.
thank so much for making this video. Didn't know where to find the filter in the first place!
Very clear and friendly explanation - thanks for helping me get this job done!
Awesome video. Very detailed. I appreciate this video as it helped me do this step by step with tools that is needed. 👍
Excellent high quality video. Easy to see exactly what you are talking about.
Great video! If you’re watching pay attention to the angle before he slides it in
Amazing. Well produced video shows me exactly what I need to know. Thanks for all the tips.
Thank you for producing this constructive tutorial. I enjoyed the thorough explanation and descriptive commentary. The HD video is much appreciated. Nice camera or phone! I managed to save a lot of $$ thanks to your video. Thank you! :)
Matthew Chavez Very Cool! Thanks for watching and glad to know it helps your DIY & save you $$ too! :)
Not too terribly difficult -- a little tight, but you made it look fairly easy. Thanks!
Excellent video, very helpful. I don't know how you managed to keep the camera mostly on target and in focus while doing this in such a tight space. Big props...
Brian
Excellent video and very detailed as well. Good work Mr. Moomoo!
Wow! Thank you for this clear and descriptive video. I'm glad I watched!
Thank You for showing that, you saved us quite a bit of time and money!
Frances Rose Nice, thanks for watching!
Very helpful video. Cost of a NAPA filter was about $20 and it took me about ten minutes to replace the old one.
Thank you so much MooMoo97👍 . You are a master and saved me a lot of money. I have never changed a cabin air filter before and thanks to you I successfully did it with your help. Yay !! 👏🏼
Yay! Thanks for watching and glad to know it has worked out for you! Please do a LIKE to my video!
Well this saved me a bunch of money, thanks. I used the Wix brand filter instead of Ford since O Reilly's is nearby.
Many thanks @moomoo97 for such detailed instructions! You turned what would have been a curse-worthy PITA task into a twist-this-fold-that "simple" solution for a completely kludgy design.
Great this video helped you. This cabin filter location is not as straightforward compare to other car brands.
On my 2007 Mk2 focus [europe] I removed the filter from the other side - removing the throttle pedal. The difficulty of this install is the location of the filter :( On this Mk3, it seems a little bit easier. Great vid!
I found my cabin filter on top of my engine shredded up as a squirrels nest so thank you for this.
Wow, so clear and thorough 👍 thank you for all your videos on the MK3. These have saved me so much time and money too. Thank you
lol, wtf, why is this so complicated?? My manual didn't say ANYTHING about this! Thanks for this video!! I would have never figured it out!
Love your presentation. Very helpful and entertaining! Thanks.
Very good video. Very informative and helpful. I thought is was going to be much more difficult.
Tks a lot! You helped me so much. You've gotten to the point! Great!
I'm from Brazil and I was loking for a video like yours!
"There's our prize! The cabin air filter." :D
This is an excellent instruction video! Also, this guy is very funny! :) Laughed my butt off! Love this guy! I really liked his final analysis of the design location! Thumbs up!!
However, I would LOVE to see him do the cabin air filter replacement of a 2011 Ford Fusion! Ford really screwed the pooch with the filter cover on that one! You can just about expect to break the filter cover when you remove it!
Thanks for your comments too, glad it helped. Please do a LIKE to this video, it'll be easier to search out here.
Thanks for the help, I never would have gotten it on my own!
Glad to know it helped you out, please do a LIKE to the video.
Great video! This made changing my filter so much easier.
Great guide. Changed mine with no problem. Interesting there was no screw on the filter door on mine. Thanks.
Cool, same ST3 here. Ford recently has a recall (for most 2013 ST3) on our HID lights about the Amber side-markers not lighting up. I was contemplating to pull a DIY on this one instead of bringing it in.
I like ur vids!! Such self control for one handed work!! Great job!! I’d be in the edit room “beeping” my cussing!! 😂
It's a tough shoot in some occasions with only 1 hand. LOL
Thanks for the video; just what I needed. Thanks again for time and effort you put in. Good Job!!!!
Great video, thank you for taking the time to do this.
Great video, you can actually unstrap those two sets of cables at that junction box, to help make the installation easier. After the installation, just plug them back in.
Thanks! That's part of the Ford's standard steps for cabin filter change. I just try to take out as less things as possible to get the same work done.
What a tricky job.really well explained.
Good job! This video is very helpful. Thanks a lot. Greetings from
Brazil!
thanks for the detailed video; this was extremely helpful
Thanks moomoo, my filter was on the right side of the footwell. I have the boot release on the left. Same concept just reversed. Easy.
Interesting notes, is it because your Ford is a Right-Hand Drive?
Yes, I have a right hand drive.
why this has so few likes? thank you for your video!
Thanks. This helped me with my 2018 Focus Titanium
As regards replacement of this item, all videos seem to about how to do this on left hand drive cars. So, i am assuming that on a right hand drive it will be on the opposite side, i e adjacent to the fusebox?
Yep.
Very helpful video, made it easy to change the filter in my ST today. Thanks!
Nice job great camera work
Awesome job on this DIY.....Great detail in all the steps!.
Cheers fella 25.57 from start to finish.
Another excellent video with great pictures and sound, thanks moomoo for such a perfect explanation of the most awkward of fittings and how to overcome such a difficult location....I think brain surgery would be easier LoL!!!!
+mixwizard2310 LOL! Thanks for watching, glad it helps you out on changing the filter.
Ok. Now it is my time to shine.
