    In this video, we’re doing a steering bearing head replacement on our Honda Goldwing. If you feel unusual resistance or a clicking when you turn the handlebar, that could be a sign that your bearings are worn.
    This is a complicated job in part because of all of the additional parts that must be removed in order to access the steering head on a big motorcycle like the Goldwing. We’ll start by disassembling the wheel and fork assemblies before removing the instrument panel and the entire shelf. Then we’ll work on removing the steering stem and the worn bearings.
    We’re using an All Balls tapered bearing kit, and John will show you how to get the bearings installed using a bearing driver set. Then we’ll put it all back together again. Then, John will show you a trick to keep both sides of the fork parallel, which is important to keep the motorcycle’s steering system from binding.

    I was taught the “glob of grease in the palm” method many decades ago to hand pack bearings. It does much more thorough job of greasing than does just smearing some on the rollers. You want the area between the rollers packed full of grease.

      If they’re spinning at thousands of rpm’s yes. These are just steering head bearings. They’re not spinning enough to need it.

      @@kokobeatz7222 Bearings that aren’t spinning need it even more. Bearings that spin fast keep the grease mixed up and slung around and the heat they generate also helps move the grease around. Bearings that simply oscillate do none of this and need the grease tightly packed around the rolling elements to keep them lubricated and prevent friction and rust. You have it backwards.

      @@LTVoyager idk about that they need it packed more. I’m pretty sure those bearings he installed with the amount of grease that he did will last the life of the bike.

      @@LTVoyager like I said. Yes if it’s a bearing spinning thousands of revolutions a minute. It needs to be packed like the timken diagram shows. These DO NOT spin at those speeds. It’s literally never making a full
      Rotation ever. I think the amount of grease he put on the steering head bearings is fine. Did you not see how little grease were in the Oe ones that he pulled out? Not very much

    As always, a great video. The first time I saw the head bearings on a GL1800, I was amazed they held up as well as they did. They belong on a bicycle. Just way too small and cheesy.

    i remember you have changed the air filter for the same gold wing a long time ago and you had to take apart half the bike. it is really annoying bike to maintaine. Thank you for your effort and knowlege you provide in ur videos.

    Great Video !!! Goldwings are great but they are no joke to work on. I just did a engine swap on my 2003. Partzilla received allot of money for that big job. Replaced and need lots of parts.

    Great video.
    I've successfully rebuilt my forks, upgraded springs, changed air filter and other stuff from your videos, but i think i may have someone else do this one. This one looks like it takes a bit of actual mechanic savvy to complete.

      As usual, John did a great presentation, but if I decide to go with changing out the steering bearings, the bike is going to a shop as well.
      I think the brace he removed/replaced was a Superbrace, I could be wrong, but that is the brand that Cruiseman recommended in a video I watched some time ago. I think he also recommended the Kuryakyn brace as well. Cruiseman is a very detailed and objective person.

      I wouldnt worry. This guy isnt much of a "mechanic" from alot of the techniques Ive seen him using in these vids. Prety sloppy and doesnt know how to do some things correctly.

    You have some of the best vids out there and I love them. but I have a serious question??? Why didn't you hand pack that bearing before you drove it onto the stem? Surface coating wont get enough grease into the cage, rollers and races. The bearing will prematurely wear out. Bearing packing 101 (maybe I am just old school.)

      If they’re car wheel bearings or something yes. Gotta pack them. But these are steering head bearings. They’re not spinning’s really fast non stop. Just turning side to side occasionally

      Do you have any idea how LITTLE a steering head bearing moves less than 180 degrees in total. and unless you are in a parking lot next to zero. Now a trike front end uses a lot more movement of the steering stem bearings, but not a two wheeler. The number of rotations is small, and there is zero heat generated in that movement. Even on a trike. The problem with the standard bearings on a Goldwing was simply that they were under engineered using ball bearings rather than tapered roller bearings, it is more a matter of the road shock destroying them, than actual lack of lubrication of the bearings. The tapered roller bearings will withstand far more shock.

    Great job, great info. My factory book says "TORQUE 21LBS." 28 TO 31 is a lot different. I have 07 also. I am confused.

      Have a look at ruclips.net/video/t6nAr6SmnMI/видео.html . 28-31lbs is All-Balls' recommendation whilst the workshop manual says 20lbs for 2001-2005 and 21lbs for 2006-2017. Can't imagine why there's a 1lb difference. I'm about to do my 2004 and if Max says 21lbs that's what I'll be doing.

      @@michaelhoare5291 The difference in torque is because one is a tapered roller bearing, and the factory is simple ball bearings. Follow the directions for the All balls bearings.

    In the parts description it only list one seal , but it appears there was one on the bottom and one on the top. Is it the same one? Also, he calls out there’s all walls bearing set but later on that it list which I guess is the OEM bearing set not needed , correct ?

      LoL I wouldnt call this guy a "pro" and yes I would put an air filter in at the same time. no idea why he didnt put one in. Guess hes all about that mulah i.e. doing it later when he can charge full rate.

    Hi John. Did you replace the locking washer (90506MBL610) which sits between the two steering head nuts? As it's a spring washer chances are that the one removed from the bike will be crushed and therefore potentially ineffective. Worth replacing at around $8.

      Is the the correct part number? It does not say its correct in the partzilla catalog. Perhaps partzilla has an error in their database for this part?

    1/2" pipe? That is no way a half inch pipe, maybe 1.5" pipe. Both my ears and my closed caption said 1/2" pipe. Is it 1.5" ? Would like to know as I am about to get a 6 degree triple tree for my Goldwing trike and will need to do the bearings as well. Thanks!

    Is handlebar wobble at low speeds (30mph and below) a symptom of bearing wear. I have 53k on mine. Has always run true with NO wobble all way down to 5 mph. At 52k and with end of life on tire I started noticing wobble. Thought it was was from old tire wear. New tires but STILL wobble. Advice?

      Could be bearing wear or steering stem bearings.

    CAUTION - the Bearing Driver Set mentioned at 16:21 is not the right part - this part is for wheel bearings and it is not tapered - not what you need.

    All balls are Chinese crap, use always OEM bearings which will last much much longer.
    Always grease bearings before putting them on…
