    German here, never heard of Männertag, we just celebrate fathersday normally
    Update: It's a regional thing, done in certain pats of Germany

    • @vivaldismurder8779
      @vivaldismurder8779 7 лет назад +6

      same here :D we do something similar (here in baden Württemberg/Schwarzwald) on the first may. but that's with men and women and we drive around in huge things called "maiwagen" . but you have to be at least sixteen :D

    • @mikestone6078
      @mikestone6078 7 лет назад +4

      First time i heard of what's now become Männertag it was when I moved to Northern Germany and was confronted with the tradition of Boseln. Which is like the described Männertag, but with a Boule like ball game thrown in to justify moving around the countryside with a Bollerwagen full of beer.
      From my middle aged perspective I'd say that kinda caught on and has become popular nationwide or is at least in the process of. The ball game is falling out of grace, though. It's lame anyway.

    • @HMcore
      @HMcore 7 лет назад +10

      Yep, never heard of Männertag either. We usually do that thing with the Bollerwagen here in Bavaria, too but we just call it Bierathlon.
      Also that's nothing for specifically fathers' day but yes, that's one of the days people tend to do that thing.
      Also, please could somebody explain Jack that the two dots over the Ä aren't just there to look funny but actually mark that it's not pronounced like a plain A? Ä is spoken like the American E in, for example, help. Or at least that's closer than an A.

      Where do you live? Herrentag/Männertag is widely celebrated in north (I came from Schwerin for example).
      Though it also celebrated with women, it's not like it's a "no girls allowed" club.

      Funny thing is not all of the music being played was EDM. There was some Techno in there, a little House and at the end even Hardstyle. Personally I think it's kinda lazy that Americans now call all dance music 'EDM' as there's so much more out there than happy, bouncy millenial shit. My favourites are Breakbeat, Breakcore & Gabba. ;)

      Is there a legal amount of holidays your employer has to give you? Here in the UK they legally have to give you 5.6 weeks paid holiday (including Christmas and Easter etc..)

    • @macoson
      @macoson 7 лет назад +40

      No, there is no paid holiday in US required by law, however 77% private employers offer paid vacation to their employees. There is no paid maternity leave too, just like in Swaziland, Lesotho and Papua New Guinea.

    You always see in American movies, college kids showing up to a house party with a 6 pack of beer. Please tell me you drink more than that.. People in England drink that before they leave the house! I'm genuinely curious

    • @RobertHurtig
      @RobertHurtig 7 лет назад +54

      Yeah, no worries college was cases, kegs, handles of hard alcohol, etc... The ones showing up with just a 6-pack were usually freeloaders who did that just to say they brought something.

    • @RobertHurtig
      @RobertHurtig 7 лет назад +6

      It depends on who you end up partying with, so sometimes it can be bring your own, but when you can get a handle of cheap vodka for $10-15, there's really not that much of a worry.

    • @ThePwnedProduction
      @ThePwnedProduction 7 лет назад +21

      I just had to google what a handle of vodka is.. if it was that cheap here dead bodies would line the streets.. when the government has to pay to sober up drunks in hospitals and pump their stomachs, they tax the fuck out of the booze!

    • @spencerhaynes4364
      @spencerhaynes4364 7 лет назад +15

      Usually someone his handed as much money as the party is willing to give out to driver. That person goes to the store and buys as much of the cheapest alcohol they can and brings it out. Later everyone gives someone the rest of their money that they didn't intend to give and they go out to buy more alcohol. Then the police show up.

    Americans work longer hours for lower wages than the rest of the developed world and we have more police and imprisonment. We dont party bc even if you have the money to party, which statistically you probably don't, one bad snapchat photi can get you terminated Monday morning bc most states are Right to Work, ie right to fire states. That being said, these festivals are vry cool.

    The Jewish festival of Purim is absolutely bonkers in Tel Aviv where the entire city basically turns into one enormous rave with fireworks and neon everywhere and just pure, unadulterated chaos. Meanwhile, in America the same holiday is basically a much lamer Halloween celebrated entirely in a synagogue's community hall with the worst carnival games possible scattered about.

    You guys didn't mention Songkran, the Thai new year (in April). It is basically a three day long water fight where everyone runs around with super soakers, but first they chuck baby powder on you and then you get drenched. So walk around all day caked in paste and you have to keep your phone and wallet in a ziploc bag because people drive around in pickup trucks with barrels of water in the back and huge buckets for throwing at people on the sidewalk.

    So.. I am German, Bavarian at that, which means I'm from the place where we made the idea of getting shitfaced on beer. And I have legitimately never heard of the idea of "Männertag". I've never heard of anyone who did it, and I wasn't aware that there are any regions where people actually do that. For all I am concerned, Father's Day here is the exact same as in the US - Mother's Day, but for our fathers.

      That's quite interesting. I'm an American who lived in Brandenburg an der Havel, Leipzig and Hamburg for several years in the past decade and it was celebrated in all three cities, but more heavily in Brandenburg and Leipzig. For non-Germans: both Brandenburg and Leipzig are north of Bavaria and were formerly part of the Soviet Union as East Germany. Hamburg is also northern but was part of the much wealthier West German nation, as Bavaria was. In my experience, traditions and holidays vary radically between the former East and West, and I think Maennertag (sorry, no umlaut on my keyboard) has much stronger roots in the East. I was 15 when I first saw it celebrated in Brandenburg and I was so confused as to why all the men in town were getting onto their bicycles with crates of beers and cycling out to the forests! For women, it was a normal work day!

      sure we do, but that isnt what this is about. if we had one day a year to settle our differences, we'd probably have a lot less people in jail for assault, and a lot less actual fatalities from fights gone too far. when theres a group of hundreds of your townspeople there ready to drag you off if need be, its a lot easier to stop when you have to. giving us a bit more leeway to use our aggression in controlled events would more than likely decrease the uncontrolled outbursts accordingly

    The day in the video you call "Männertag" is the first of may. Officially this is "Tag der Arbeit" or literally translated, "day of work". Which is kind of ironic if you consider that this is a national holiday. In bavaria almost everybody who likes beer (who does not??) is celebrating this day. We're usually hiking with a group of 5-15 people. But unlike you said this isn't a male thing only, sometimes even whole families with kids take part, and since your allowed to drink beer legally when you're at least 116 years old, you can have a lot of fun as a student as well :)

  • @Em-bi7tn
    @Em-bi7tn 7 лет назад +53

    Yes, as a born&raised European (Scandinavia) I can really say that I get SUPER disappointed whenever I party with Americans. We grew up seeing the films where American parties seem so crazy, but in reality, most Americans cannot(!) hold their liquor. They get insanely drunk before 01 and are home by two. They are literally all "wooh-girls", also the men, and they are really not ever able to handle European parties. This is experiences I've had with the American tourists I've partied with (a lot over the years). Not people who moved here. They learn after some years. But they are seriously weak. they can't handle the drinking in the streets. It's an art to know your limits. Americans know none. That's probably also why they're so fat.

    • @Doan84
      @Doan84 7 лет назад +16

      It is not about resistance, it is about stopping drinking, when you reach the point of drunk enough to party and have fun, but still in control of yourself.
      And then only drinking to keep at that level.

    • @Em-bi7tn
      @Em-bi7tn 7 лет назад +7

      Doan08 knows what's up. They can't ever say no when offered booze even when they hit their limits. We, in my country, have a deeply rooted thing with always sharing and offering. And we know that you have to say no if you feel unwell. I, also, always see American tourists drink straight vodka even though they can't take it. We dont necessarily drink any more than them, but we drink a little at the time and always drink tons of water when feeling less good. We don't do "chasers" and all that shit. We have our drinks, and in between them we drink water. And maybe some shots along the way. My experience with Americans is tons of soda (for a terrible sugar rush), tons of beers and mixed drinks, and tons of straight vodka because they think they seem cool when they do that, when in reality, getting white-girl-drunk as a grown man/woman is pretty damn embarrassing. We sometimes sip a lil vodka, but I've never seen any other go to town on those bottles as Americans. And I've NEVER seen them be able to walk straight 30 minutes later. At 10 pm. Get a grip girl.

    • @Em-bi7tn
      @Em-bi7tn 7 лет назад +2

      JaiFlame, but I do think it's fair to not like drinking. Different strokes for different folks. I never really pay when I go out tho. Only when I maybe drink some wine with a friend over dinner. Else, I always have connections. And I'm also a girl so I get tons of free stuff. Which I'm truly grateful for. I'm a shit-poor student. It's always nice to have privileges (if I can say that word without it being smeared with the newest meaning) and be lucky. The main thing is just to never leech on anyone. Never lead anyone on, just for drinks, and never take it if the person is struggling with money as you. Hehe.

    • @JeantheSecond

    • @JeantheSecond

    Biggest festival I've been to is Ozora in Hungary. It's not as crazy as the ones in the video, but the entire valley that the main stage is located in turns into a swamp of rain-water and sweat, with people literally rolling around in the mud 24 hours a day for like 4 or 5 days straight. We also have giant wooden statues that are lit up with trippy patterns at night, and a corn maze, where a girl literally got so lost one year, that they found her in a nearby village, still high out of her mind on MDMA, among other things. Also, the goa music is blasting from 3 or 4 different directions at all times, for a week. It's definitely an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life.

      I think there's a similar deal in scotland where nearly everyone is somehow descendent from a clan leader (McDonald I think). He's second to Genghis for number of decedents

    Kok-par. The Central Asian counterpart of Polo with a whole sheep instead of a ball, played with bare hands, and no protective equipment, and all of the men are competing with each other to make the best lamb chops of the year. Nomads are brutal.

      Arrogant or not that statement isn't wrong. Even if the person saying it is arrogant it's validity isn't lost. Religion is based around and stresses above all other things in practice and theory belief and faith rather than critical thinking. Which is why I've come to find it rather odd when religious people try to convince a pragmatic person of their dogma with logic and facts. Whether a person is intelligent or not religion requires they disregard their reasoning in that facet of their life as God's nature is, by his own (read: human scribes) word, beyond reasoning or logic.

      As of today, there have been roughly 300 mass shootings this year. That's a little more than "a few".
      You only hear about a few overseas I'm sure, but only because the most heinous ones get publicity.

    You forgot the week-long fireworks in Valencia, Spain called Fayas. It smells like gunpowder everywhere, and there are random explosions, including a nightly fireworks show that starts around 1 am. Then don't get me started on tracas which basically sound like artfully exploded canons. They also build giant elaborate paper mache and wooden structures that then they burn at the end of the week. It's awesome.

    There's a town in sud Italy when every year they do the "danza dei coltelli" (knife dance). A particular dance with daggers used as fencing styles in duels that has you to fight following the rhythm of the "pizzica" music. And you have duels everywhere (with wood dagger or hands) or you can do/see the version that allows you to legally slap people in the face.
    It's magic!

    There is much more drugs at that one boring American EDM "festival" than at Europen EDM festivals. Americans consume 2.5 times as much cannabis per capita than they do in Holland. And a large percentage of the cannabis consumed in Holland is consumed by foreigners, including Americans.

    Every year in Darwin, NT, Australia people drink a bunch of beer, build boats out of the empty cans, and race them in the Beer Can Regatta. Some of the boats are actually pretty elaborate.
