The truth is it could be anyone arrested in the last decade or so and it's a miscarriage of justice. My husband got pulled over and arrested because he was designated driver and before going out drinking a
friend's of a friend had robbed a house so the cops arrests everyone in the vehicle, all 8 guys. My husband is army and has top secret clearance for his job. Fortunately, he was able to explain it to his commander and because he was the being a responsible NCO by being the DD he was able to pass it off as privates (e-1 to e-3 rank) are stupid but it could have devastated his military career. Despicable!

I’m sure I could write an entire paper, just chronicling how Cracked Magazine, a publication that started out, according to my mother, as the even more low-brow kid brother of Mad Magazine, became one of the most hard-hitting vanguards of American journalism, in a time when even reputable news publications are being swayed by corporate fudging, hearsay, and duplicitous bad-faith representatives... and all this change happened seemingly overnight.
It’s like if the Garbage Pail Kid cards became the only media source you could trust. I’m sure there’s a fascinating story behind how this shift occurred, but I’m lazy and hate research.
If I had to guess though... it probably started with hiring more female editors.

I think this is my new favorite quote: "I think the ease of understanding with which we employ 'It makes sense from a business stand-point' these days, is deeply troubling. Because it implies on our part, a tasked complicity in a system where practices that we all acknowledge to be inherently unfair and morally bankrupt, are okay because “business” as a concept, exists in a separate plain divorced from any sense of decency where making the most money at the fastest rate trumps literally anything else." - Daniel O’Brien

my mugshot appeared every 5 minutes in a news article on a huge screen on the face of the biggest mall in town. the charges were dropped ofcourse but the news website continued to show the article on the building for a whole month, even though everything in the article was either false or grossly exagerated. this led to lots of people thinking i was a criminal and in some cases some people even called me out when i went outside in public spaces.
a lawyer told me that suing the website would have ultimately cost me more than i would have possibly gained, so in the end i just had to wait for the whole thing to blow over and hope people dont google my name.
i joke about it now, but it still sucks ass when i think about it

HUGE FAN, Cracked, would you commit to consistently linking your sources in the description? Even better, link to pdf copies of the source material, hosted by Cracked independently? This would be better than links to webpages because Hilary Mason's article is no longer available on her website (like many other articles web-news outlets cite, it's safe to say); this problem would be avoided if Cracked did host an archive.

Yep. I grew up in the streets and lived that life for the better part of 30 yrs, it wasn't all that optional but it's a long story. Add to that addictions (use, you're always addicted) that spanned well over a decade and activism that I been involved in since my early teens and ya get a serious mugshot collection spanning multiple states. They're all over the internet, even YO pics somehow. But what's weird is that most I've seen have another name on em entirely and almost never have the correct charges included. Search my name and a bunch of other mugshots come up, none of which are mine unless ya scroll down a bit. Fortunately when I got out last time and decided to get outta the life I was able to get a pretty good job so I haven't really dealt with any negative effects. I've had most of this brought to my attention by other people though, so someone was searching, they just got bogus ass info. It ain't good. And something has to be done. This "justice" system is broken enough and mfs have hard enough time making it through without capitalist exploitation of their fuck ups and trauma. It's sick.

Great content Daniel, came back to watch this following the recent debate point on voter rights where presidential candidates have been pitted with in terms of allowing felons such as the Boston bomber to vote (clearly trying to evoke a very specific Us good folk vs Them who deserve to be punished with fury narrative). I remembered just how fucked up the prison industrial complex has worked to incarcerate 2.2 million people (with POC being overrepresented), with places like SC having the worlds largest prison population and even Democrats like Biden and Kamala Harris who are responsible for sponsoring some bills which rose the numbers.

And THAT is why EU implemented GDPR. Mugshots over here is NOT public property, it is NOT publicly available information and you need consent from the person depicted to distribute it. And even then you may only distribute it within the parameters set up within the agreement with that person and only for the purposes you claim it is for. If any of that is broken, you may face fines of up to £1.6 million (around $2.1 million), depending on scope, severity and frequency of the trespass.

Well, there are already a wide variety of opinions about that, but I don't disagree that we should go easier on people convicted of crimes. However, these websites do not list the crime, nor is it in their interest to do so; if they did, they would drastically reduce their leverage over people who were arrested for either something they didn't do, or for something widely regarded as harmless. That leverage is their bread and butter.
So while I agree with your suggestion, I don't think it would really solve this particular problem.

+Jane Doe By loan sharks, you mean insurance companies, who are supported by the federal government.

MrARKY89 I mean companies like Quicken Loan that promise a quick and easy loan now, then add on as much interest as possible. They set such high terms expecting the customer to be unable to pay the loan off any time soon. Even better if they come back for more loans because that's more profit. Fail to pay, and you can expect daily reminder calls which may or may not include threats.

Wouldn't not having current contact info be a violation of ICANN rules? Is there a workaround there?

I have not been in the job market for a couple of years, so take the following with a grain of salt. I have been in Management/hiring numerous times, I would never use something or could use something such as Google or any other search engine to obtain information for an employee. Also, most application processes ask if the applier has been charged with a felony, so why would a mug shot be that surprising. A mug shot without a felony charge would not matter, I guess should not matter. However we go back to the point of: What kind of real business would rely on a search engine for results? Wouldn't a simple background check, which most businesses do to each employee, tell any information about the employee....so the mugshot (once again) would not be surprising and all the information needed would be available. So are these websites really just preying on the fear of those whom have the mugshots out there....so shouldn't we just educate people to what businesses really do instead of adding onto the fear of having a mug shot out there?
