Galaxy Quest Movie Description:
The stars of a 1970s sci-fi show - now scraping a living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions - are beamed aboard an alien spacecraft. Believing the cast's heroic on-screen dramas are historical documents of real-life adventures, the band of aliens turn to the ailing celebrities for help in their quest to overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system.
Galaxy Quest is a 1999 American science fiction comedy film directed by Dean Parisot and written by David Howard and Robert Gordon. A parody of and homage to science-fiction films and series, especially Star Trek and its fandom, the film stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and Daryl Mitchell. It depicts the cast of a fictional defunct cult television series, Galaxy Quest, who are visited by actual aliens who think the series is an accurate documentary, and drawn into a very real interstellar conflict.
The film was a modest box office success and positively received by critics: it won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Nebula Award for Best Script. It was also nominated for 10 Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Director for Parisot, Best Actress for Weaver, and Best Supporting Actor for Rickman, with Allen winning Best Actor.
Galaxy Quest eventually achieved cult status, especially from Star Trek fans for its affectionate parody, but also from more mainstream audiences as a comedy film in its own right.
Several Star Trek cast and crew members praised the film. It was included in Reader's Digest's list of The Top 100+ Funniest Movies of All Time in 2012, and Star Trek fans voted it the seventh best Star Trek film of all time in 2013.

I first saw this movie in the theater when it first came out...I probably went to a discount matinee showing. I almost hate to admit it, but I am a Tim Allen fan...he makes me laugh. Loved this movie from the very first viewing, and have rewatched it dozens and dozens of times over my dozens of years. Really enjoy seeing folks like you watching it and loving it as much as I do...thank you. 💯😁✌
There is a terrific documentary on Galaxy Quest that I cannot recommend enough...maybe for a react in a few weeks...or even just to watch for yourself...it is called "Never Surrender" 🖖✌

Oh no, really? I think that people forget that actors are people too. Also, that thing where Jason tells Brandon that it's just a TV show, isn't that also a Shatner thing? Where some fan asked him a technical question at a con and he was like, wtf dude, I don't know.

And only Alan Rickman could deliver such a stupid line with such gravity and seriousness, and it works. RIP

Most underrated joke of the movie: “But you don’t think Gilligan’s Island really-” “...Those poor people.”
Proves they modeled after all of human civilization by watching thousands and thousands of hours of movies and television.
You really have to wonder how they didn't catch onto the concept of fiction throughout it all. Really stretches that suspension of disbelief.
At least they weren't watching today's shows, imagine the horror that would have created.

@@MuljoStpho That's a good question. They actually give a small hint? The problem, you watching from a human perspective. We're used to lie and be lied to, to make believe. Simply because our communication system enables us to speak untruth. Acting is pretending aka lying about who you truly are, as entertainment or a way to get into the pants of a pretty girl. What if, because of its evolution (or the physical laws of a an entire universe) an existence is unable to develop the ability to lie and pretend?

The Omega 13 is a cheap trick. It's a joke about how Star Trek, sci-fi shows in general, used the reset button. So in _Galaxy Quest_ it's a literal button.
Also, the self destruct ending at 1 second was another such send-up of the trope of "saving the ship at the last second."
Undoubtedly, all the shows ended countdown timers at 1 second before detonation, so they designed the system literally to end destruction at "1 second," not whenever they actually cut the write or pressed the button, or whatever. Funny riff. ;)

Sam Rockwell's scream after the transport was not in the script, was ad-libbed by Sam. It Caught Sigourney off guard, and her shock jump was real. They kept it in the final cut :)
The whole film is a nod to the fact that Star Trek actors end up on convention circuits, and the fact that Kirk in the original series always ended up with his shirt off.
Alan Rickman: "OH YES, IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT YOU ISNT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".
There is a documentary about the film with a couple of actors, Will Wheaton and Brent Spiner praising it.
Oh and Tony Schlaub's character was originally supposed to be non stop stoned, hence why he was always mellow, or had the munchies. Sigourney Weavers 'Well Screw that !!!", read her lips to see what she actually said.

My favorite line is when Tim Allen accidentally calls him Fleegman shortly after the scene where he makes a big deal about no-one knowing his last name.
@@TheHighSorcerer I can't find the reference, but Guy Fleegman was named for a similarly named ST:TNG art designer (IIRC). They never let him in on the joke until he saw it in the theater. Someone help find this reference!

Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell are the reason this movie is so perfectly hysterical. There were a ton of funny actors, but those two were something else.
I dunno, Tim Allen surprised the hell out of me in the scene when he finally tells the truth about the show. He brings proper acting chops there. I wish he'd do more movies where he can show some range.
I would also add Tony Shalhoub as a standout for the film.
Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie.
It's not quite up to Wrath of Khan, but it's up there.

You could suit me up and sit me in a T-65B 'X-Wing' multi-role starfighter right now and I could fly it. Into combat. I am actually to the point where I question Red One's (Garven Dreis) orders during the Battle of Yavin. I think I could have gotten more of those boys home.
Not that I'm a geek or anything. I mean *looks at shelf, sees many SW tech manuals and his CD copy of X-Wing Alliance, and on his computer where he sees a Good old Games version of the X-wing games that he played when I was a kid*. Shit.

This is such a good film from damn near every perspective as satire, as parody, action adventure, sci fi, ensemble, writing , story structure. For being 1999 it really should have won more makeup and FX awards.
Mell, the Thermians think that Dr. Lazarus is really an alien, not a human actor-That's why they gave him the live bugs to eat!
But, like, how did their replicators create "live bugs"? Like wouldn't they have had to entirely bio-engineer them, or something? I mean, it's not like the show included the bugs' genomes or anything...

My son tried watching it in the Alien language, and he couldn't handle it for the whole movie.
Seriously?! I had to get the DVD from somewhere! I saw the "documentary" it's hilarious, but this had to be on another level. This movie is such a treasure and it could so easily have turned out horrible.
They all seem to have so much fun doing this - it is so sad the sequel never happened, they were all on board but without Alan Rickman it would not be right...

Did you notice how, when Sarris showed up on the ship, he has that thing bolted to the side of his face? That's a "bandage" over a wound he suffered when Jason attacked his ship at the beginning, not knowing all this was real. So Sarris has a personal bone to pick with Jason, aside from just wanting to kill all the Thermians.
I think the most wonderful thing about the movie is that last shot that flies up over the actors' heads and ends the story with the shot of the applauding, adoring audience. This film was made when fans were still considered losers, before geek culture became cool. It felt really wonderful to have a film say that fans were valuable people, that geeks could actually save the world precisely because they _were_ geeks.
Definitely the best Star Trek movie ever. It's so good that you don't have to know anything about Star Trek to love it. As you know. :)
Using the Omega 13 might seem cheap, but consider what it means: he trusted the fans who had theorized what it did.
They did this movie dirty with such little marketing. The man who plays Tommy described the experience as "making a huge dinner and not inviting any guests."
At least people love it now and has a respectable place in sci-fi culture.

@@toodlescae Shatner actually had a very tough time of it after TOS was cancelled. He wound up homeless for a time and living out of his truck.

Never give up, never surrender! RIP,Alan Rickman. This movie is amazing and hilarious! It shows us what would happen if the cast of Star Trek was mistaken for real space heroes. George Takei, Sulu, called it " the best documentary I had seen, because that is what the cast had gone through during the last 3 years of working on the show".
Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard from Next Generation) originally said that he was reluctant to see the movie, because he was afraid it was making fun of them and the fans. Jonathan Frakes (Riker from TNG) more or less forced him to see it with a full audience, and now its one of his favorite movies.
Alan Rickman was so dang funny in this. People forget that he could be funny in some of his movies.
That scene where he tells them he’s just an actor.... way too heartbreaking for that movie.
Alan Rickman said he was suddenly surprised that Tim Allan could suddenly act, and act REALLY well, in that scene.
@@Leon-wz1js Tim Allen is actually a pretty good serious actor, much like Robin Williams, just sadly not taken seriously by most because of their history of comedy.
@@shadowproductions969 Alan Rickman's opinion is far more scathing. Not saying I agree with him, I was merely quoting him. I don't think Rickman thought Allen was truly incapable of serious acting, I think he thought Allen was simply too comedic too often.
I'm so happy you watched this film. No film has ever depicted fans in a more hilarious or complimentary way. My favorite bit is when the fanboy says, "I knew it was real!" And, in the end, it's the fans who help save the day! Also, the chemistry between the cast is freaking awesome.

1:35 Patrick Stewart actually said that he initially dismissed/avoided this movie because he expected it to just be a parody of Star Trek that made fun of the actors and fans. Jonathan Frakes told him that he needed to go see it in the theater, with a full audience. He did, and he ended up loving the movie and how made the fans of the show turn out to be the true heroes (by helping the cast at the end of the movie with all their knowledge of the show).

Mystery Men is another underrated movie from the same time period. Great satire of superhero movies from before they were popular.
I absolutely loved this movie! It was such a love letter to Star Trek, on top of being a fantastic comedy.
This cast is amazing. The acting is so subtle, and as a nerd who's been to a few cons both as a presenter and a guest... this is pretty accurate to how it feels.
Your comments about the design, the direction, the production design - you are spot on! I think this movie works because everyone involved took it seriously and brought their A game. I grew up watching a Star Trek TNG rerun every night after dinner, and this is one of my family's favorite movies.
If you're a fan, it's like a love letter to the fandom. And if you don't know much about Star Trek, it's a still a really funny, well-designed sci fi movie with a surprising heart.
Can everyone take a moment to appreciate the Technical ingenuity of the Thermians for completely designing a Starship (and possibly an entire Civilization) based only on Random beamed transmissions they received from another planet? It's like a more ridiculous version of First Contact.
there's some cut material that basically confirms Fred (Tony Shalloub) is supposed to be high as a kite for most of his screentime.
He always struck me as being perpetually hung over.

It's a crazy thing when the soundtrack, costumes, sets and special effects in your parody movie all hugely surpass the thing you're parodying.
if you don't got a crush on Sigourney weaver before now, you will after this. I love this movie, it captures the spirit of star trek and why we love it. I saw this in the theater when it first came out. Just love it, one of my favorite movies. Great reaction. keep up the great work.
One thing a lot of people miss: Guy's role in the renewed show, the Security Chief? Well, guess which character was the first to get killed off for good in Star Trek: The Next Generation....

@@CountryMetal01 I don't quite recall what caused the departure in TNG, but I do know that the actress regretted leaving the show so much that she asked to be briefly brought back in a later episode involving an alternate timeline in which she survived.

If I recall correctly, Denise Crosby was extremely dissatisfied with the quality of the writing on the show that first season, before it jelled and substantially improved.
(On a more personal note, I'm glad I chose not to follow the series when it premiered, as the untimely departure of Tasha Yar might have scarred me for life. My sincerest condolences to whoever is reading this, if indeed it happened to you. Let's hope Mr. Fleegleman has no cause to complain in his new role as Chief of Security; that WAS well observed.) 😕 😎

It's still a Parody of ST, but it's also a Homage.
More in the Vein of Spinal Tap (another movie you should do) than Spaceballz.
And like Spinal Tap, they got a Ton of behind the scenes secrets.
Plus, it laid the groundwork for the show the Orville.

In many sci fi universes, there are actual technical manuals that go into extreme detail, hence how the kids know exactly what is where, etc.
I showed this movie to my wife last year and she was really surprised at how good it is.

I love that you notice that Alex still has his makeup on in the scene where Gwen is talking to him about Jason losing it to a fan. You're the ONLY one who seems to notice what I consider one of the better scene dressing pieces/jokes in the movie. He's ALWAYS in his makeup. RIP Alan Rickman.

Yay, thanks to Nate who asked for this! I knew even less than you when I saw this. I tagged along with a group of friends to the theater. I didn't care what the movie was, I was just going with them. I only knew the title, didn't even know the genre. I thought it was straight sci-fi and I was BLOWN AWAY by it.

The film failed because it sold poorly, its marketing was the worst I have seen, after all they presented it as something for children, but the very remarkable actors, the idea raised and the effects are very good, I still remember it after more of a decade ... a shame because the critics value it very well

Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite movies. It’s underrated and it’s done so well. The comedy and the message, etc. are all really well done. Not to mention it has some comedy geniuses in it with Tim Allen, Sam Rockwell, Allan Rickman, and Anthony Shalhoub, they’re all great comedic actors, even though Sam can do drama/villains really well also. The whole cast was really well thought out, honestly.

Galaxy Quest is a near perfect film. Sci-fi and comedy blended amazingly. This is one of my Top 5 favorite movies of All-time.

Compared to what CBS has been doing to "Star Trek" these days, "Galaxy Quest" is a reminder of when it was a much-loved franchise. It is unfortunate that without Alan Rickman there is no possibility of a much-needed "Galaxy Quest 2." "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" fans can only bear witness as their respective dumpster fires destroy the world they knew. Fie on clueless media conglomerates that have "Weyland-Yutani" as their operations model!

First of all, new 'Trek shows have all been great. Have enjoyed them all [Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks], looking forward to Section 31, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, etc.
Secondly, it sounds like they might finally be getting a Galaxy Quest series off the ground, despite Rickman's death, though it definitely put a damper on things for a while, as did Orville, sort of, as a 'Trek parody / homage that kind of stood in for Galaxy Quest in its absence.

There is a series called "Con Man" starring Alen Tudyk, he was in Firefly, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and has done a lot of voice work.
It's a comedy series based on a lot of the experiences he had had working the Comic conventions since his time on Firefly. He even gets a lot if other actors who also work the con circuit to guest star.
He pretty much plays himself, a guy who was on a hit sci-fi series that was canceled too soon and had to spend years going from convention to convention in between acting gigs.
Its pretty funny and interesting to see the conventions from the actors perspective.

Funny you should mention Mass Effect, the guy who plays the villain Sarin was the voice of Zaeed the mercenary in ME2 and 3. Also the voice of Garrus is in this movie somewhere, I think he's one of the Thermian extras.
I was a teen when this came out and my dad was a HUGE Tim Allen fan so he made sure to rent it (very rare for him). We laughed so hard, celebrated every fight, every win. I sometimes find myself quoting this movie still or referring to it in some way. This is my second time watching one of your videos and I subscribed. Love the way you present and edit.

As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I love this movie. The actors from Star Trek were nervous about it but THEY loved it too. This movie...It's probably the best parody ever made.

This movie is a hidden comedy gem. Very underrated. I think it wasn't advertised very well . I think with conventions being so big the past decade that this would be a big hit .I hope they re-release in theaters for a anniversary.
One of the things that makes this movie so great, is how it is clearly a comedy, but it has just enough seriousness to keep it from being total camp.

The bridge of the ship was actually built on a moving set so that all the actors was thrown around in the same direction then the ship was hit because the directors vision was to make it as real as possible.

The going back in time being "cheap" is what they are commenting on with that scene. Many people would laugh about the time travel episodes in Star Trek. Guy was made after a real person, who used to work for Paramount, and was often and extra TNG as a security or transporter person. They immortalized him in this move.
