That's a nice story, but some lines would have to be changed regardless because there's no way they would have released that film if it had received a rating incompatible with wide release.

That's why Fincher didn't change it, because it wasn't anything more than the objections of Ziskin. And, this is David Fincher at his peak too, so it's not like anyone is just going to "overrule" Fincher, which is why the president of production for Fox made a deal instead of just "demanding" that it be changed again.

After I saw this movie by myself in the theater, I just drove around the city for an hour or two. It blew my mind wondering what someone could accomplish if they weren’t held back by their own image of themself.
The ending: he regains control of himself by both shooting himself and imagining the bullet goes through Tyler’s head, surviving because he shot himself through his cheek. That is extremely painful though so his body is probably going into shock to cope, which is why he seems numb to several buildings exploding, which he didn’t have time anymore to stop. He probably also realizes the city is going to be chaotic and getting to a hospital is going to be impossible for the next several hours.
Yes, I agree with all of that. Also, he finally realized he loves Marla. Despite originally calling her the enemy, she is the catharsis that allows him to move on from his pain. Fight Club is a love story imo.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone catch the twist before it's revealed. Which is particularly impressive when you watch the movie again and realize it wasn't even trying to hide it. Once you know it, it seems so obvious. Brilliantly executed.
I already read the book, so Fincher spoiled the ending. Palahniuk is definitely in my top 5 ever. I can only think of about 3 authors that have made me physically gag while reading, to the point that I have to put a book down for a breather before I vomited. Ellis, Palahniuk, Pynchon. I think Burroughs came close once.
Fun fact: when they did the first lunch scene Norton was legitimately supposed to punch Pitt but he got nervous and really did pinch Pitt in the ear and that was the genuine reaction to it. They found it funny so they kept it in the movie
11:38 this is my favorite shot in the movie: this is just Ed Norton and Brad Pitt drunk driving golf balls into the side of the catering truck at the end of the night's shooting, Fincher quietly filmed them and it makes for a great bonding moment
need to rewatch it. everything that Tyler did was in fact Nortons character - he *thought* he was sleeping but infact had all those other jobs, and the soap business!
This is honestly one of the best reactions to this movie that I've seen. I love that you acknowledged the beauty of the intro sequence with the camera zooming out from inside Norton's head and the explosives. You're the only RUclipsr I've seen that's taken note of the really cool visual effects and editing in this movie.
I just watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago, and I noticed Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter throw their cigarettes away dramatically like 20 times. I should make a compilation of it
The scene with the convenience store worker is so beautiful to me. He gave that guy the most priceless gift you could ever give someone, gratitude for their life. If only everyone could be so lucky. That worker thought he was going to die. He thought that it was all over. In that moment, his life was flashing before his eyes and he could finally see with clarity the truth about life, the truth that life is a blessing and every second you draw breath on this earth is a gift. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and his life was about to be permanently gone. He wanted another chance, he wanted to live, “God let me live and I’ll never take another second for granted.” Then Tyler let’s him go. He received the greatest gift, the only gift he could ever desire in that moment, his life. Never will he take it for granted again. We could all use a near death experience.
So. Those scene splits you caught at the beginning and throughout the film, are flashes of Tyler. If you go back to those scenes and slow it right down you can see it. That’s why they put in the “cigarette burn” scene for exposition. Such a great film.
"Where is My Mind" - The Pixies If that's not the best fucking song idk what is. It shows up in so many great movies and always fits perfectly. Fight Club, Trainspotting, Southland Tales (Surprising nobody knows about this movie), and a bunch of others. It always accompanies a reality break.
One thing I'm surprised nobody mentioned. As the movie goes on, Norton's character gets skinnier and paler, while Pitt's gets more buff and tanned, as his personality exerts more control. Norton and Pitt changed their lifestyles for this role to this end.
I think this is definitely Brad's best film. 12 Monkeys, Snatch, and Meet Joe Black (which he was making at the same time as this movie) are also really good performances from him, but I think Fight Club is him at his most natural.

By the end of the movie Ed Norton's character (who doesn't have a name) is kind of in love with Marla. Since Tyler wants to kill her because she knows too much (because Ed Norton broke his promise not to talk to her about Tyler), his only real concern was her safety. And since Tyler knew the buildings were empty, so did he. ("If you know, I know".) Definitely worth a rewatch. Whole different experience.

The last two buildings imploding at the end of the movie fall exactly the same way as the Twin Towers on 9/11. The movie was made two years before in 1999.
The first time I saw this movie I was fourteen, and it was one of those cases where we had to buy a ticket to another movie and sneak our way in, but we got caught and kicked out the first try. We never even made it in the second time with the doors being watched. Third time was the charm, and all that effort to get in and see it just made it all the better. It almost made it feel like we were part of the movie.

Tyler mentions hitting rock bottom a couple times... "You're one step closer to hitting bottom." I always viewed The Narrator shooting himself as that moment he couldn't get any lower, thus didn't need Tyler anymore.

Fight Club, probably one of the most misunderstood movies of all time, is ultimately a movie of describing the (healthy) stages of masculine development: Stage One: Conformity, where your sense of self is weak, your life is empty and you allow society to take advantage of you. Stage Two: Rebelion, where you forego societial norms and rebel, i.e. do destructive and self-desctructive things, in an attempt to find yourself. Stage Three: Maturity, where you finally integrate those two parts into a whole personality and you have such a strong sense of self that you know what you want out of life and don't have the need to rebel anymore. In essence, Edward Norton ''killed'' Tyler the moment he realised he did not need him in his life anymore and that he could take control of it just fine.

But I like the ending of Fight Club's film adaptation, which probably forecloses the sequel's film adaptation; something I suspect would be difficult in its own right. I would like to see an adaptation of Damned and its sequel(s). So far, Fight Club, Damned, and Doomed seem the most worth reading (and, should I get my wish, watching)
One of my favorite movies of all time. Timeless and morose. Tackles the loss of identity and spirituality in the midst of consumerism and devaluation of human life. Tyler Durden is the messed up vision of human "Free Will". The guy who does everything opposite just because.
As someone with chronic insomnia, who only sleeps 2-3 hours a night, it does get this bad sometimes. Maybe not so bad as Tyler Durden bad but living life feeling like it's fake, certainly.
Loved AHX. Saw it when it was new - like I did with Fight Club. Difference between the two? I’ve never been able to watch AHX a second time. I’ve tried but I can’t make it through. Fight Club, much more rewatchable! More fun to see someone experience for the first time. A real coming of age story for the young professional.
Patrice O’Neal perfectly broke down this movie. He said it’s a lame guy hero movie all about self hate, guilt, the burden of dishonesty. “It’s a dream movie. ‘I’m dreaming I’m a better man’ movie. That’s what Tyler Durden is, he is an imaginary, better me.”
You gotta remember that he was dealing with insomnia. He said he woke up in different places and times etc. and didn’t remember it. So him being Tyler was just part of of the insomnia that he doesn’t remember then suddenly it caught p with him.

I think when tyler "died", the narrator just became both personalities. Like the separation he'd created, ceased to exist, and both sides of his personality just merged
David Fincher's entire filmography is AMAZING. He really puts in the work to make every film as best as he possibly can. He started out with making music videos for Nine Inch Nails, and p much every movie has this dark and complicated vibe, even The Social Network. His movies also seem to magically not age, especially Se7en. Highly recommend that one, too. but it's pretty brutal, so fair warning lol Also! my fav thing about this movie is how little we really know about Ed Norton's character. Not his name, not his past. Just lots of hints to pick apart without any concrete evidence. Like all the "I am Jack's [blank]" journals might have been written by him. And Tyler's story about his dad could easily just be the Protagonist's dad. And when you consider Dissociative Identity Disorder is mainly caused by trauma, he might have grown up in that ugly house and lived a horrible life before the start of the movie. and that could explain why the cops knew the phone number for the place to reach him. All these cool details, but never anything really spelled out except for the twist at the end.
No cap, the ironic quoted in here are fantastic “Like he’s being beating up by a ghost” while the film shows you how Tyler literally fought with himself “This look like some Joker shit” when Jared Leto is on the screen 😂 I love these reactions man, amazing to see what you pick up! 🙌🙌
watched this movie first time around mid 2000's while eating tacos. now everytime I watch it again it's become my "ritual" to eat tacos while watching it haha. one of my top 5 movies of all time
PRIMAL FEAR !! It is so underrated and somehow hardly anyone has seen it. It is my fav ed Norton movie. I usually watch fight club and Primal fear together.

After so many times of watching this online as a reaction, ive realized something. Youre not supposed to go "HE blew up the condo?!" Its supposed to be "how did he know where the condo was?" But thats only if youre REALLY paying attention like he was in this
If memory serves, the grade school line was improvised too. The original line from the book was something along the lines of "I want to have your abortion" but someone on the crew for the film asked for it to be changed, even though audiences laughed in test screenings. They came to an agreement where the line would be removed, but what they came up with to replace it HAD to stay in no matter what, and they could have complete creative control over what they used instead. The current line was added, getting an even bigger laugh from the audiences and the person who complained said "Please, God, put the abortion line back in."
Apparently another improvisation was the glass stuck to his arm in the scene where he beat himself up in his bosses office. Norton on a whim stuck some of the glass to the fake blood and they kept it in.
Well actually at 10:38 when Edward Norton punched Brad in the ear it was actually a real punch, David Fincher if I am not mistaken asked Edward to do that without Brad knowing it. So Brad's response/act back wasn't scripted at all. I don't know if he actually for real punched him back after he got punched but I wouldn't be surprised if he did, if I got punched for real especially without knowing it, I would probably swing right back 😂 so yeah that scene was some what improvised by the director and an Actor without the other actor knowing it, very strange and Interesting choice but it worked 😂 Edit : I only realised after that you mentioned that you knew about the improv so yeah I guess... 😂 this is a lesson to all of you, watch the entire video first before commenting something.
The flickering effect early on is almost certainly portraying the character's insomnia. When you've been awake for long periods due to it, with no sleep, you'll get some visual hallucinations.
It is Tyler building in his subconscious. If you watch those bits frame by frame, it is Tyler standing there. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it 😊
There is so much trivia that fits this movie: When they were golfing they were really drunk and the sound you hear is them hitting a production truck The shot were Norton shows his bloody teeth is actually Fincher checking to see if they looked right and he liked it and put it in the movie. etc etc. The production sounds as crazy as the movie.
The image of Tyler kept popping up in the beginning to represent his mind deteriorating. His alter ego was slowly coming out. I read this book around 10 times and the movie was wonderfully made to fit the vibes of the book.
The film that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. The studio executive ending. He kills the villain, carries out the plan and gets the girl. Going totally against the previous narrative and against all logic. When you get shot in the head you die. If you don't believe me, try it. There's a Darwin award in it for you.
In the commentary Edward Norton is talking with Brad Pitt about the fact that it was snubbed for a lot of awards, but he takes solace in his belief that this movie will influence an entire generation of young men the way the film The Graduate influenced a previous generation, and he's not wrong. Fight Club came out my freshman year of college, and you have no idea how much this movie influenced young guys from high school to college age. If you asked 10 guys back then, 50% of them would probably tell you this was their favorite film at the time. Actual fight clubs started on campuses across the country. If a girl listed this as one of her favorite movies, it was an indicator that she was a cool chick.
I still hate the fact that most young men who watch this movie miss the point, and think Tyler is the representation of brave rebellion and affirmation of manhood. In reality, and according to the author of the book, this is a story about the absence of a father figure, and how many young men feel like they'd be more realized and put together, that they would find more meaning in life if they had a mentor. But when you get down to it the Narrator very quickly understands Tyler brings nothing but destruction and severs all real, meaningful ties to anything or anyone who gives you some purpose or even happiness. All Tyler does is well, mayhem. When the Narrator understands he became a mentor himself, even when the whole point was to free every mind from the restraints of a mindless, meaningless society, he gets it. The other guys are just following him instead of doing their own thing, which was the entire point of Tyler's existence. They have become drones themselves. In the end he just wanted it all to stop and return to normal. In the books however, he ends up in an asylum being coddled and cared for by the other members of Project Mayhem. He loses his freedom, his self-determination and his chance at life. Bottom line: try to live righteously, towards your true self and others. You don't need to become an office drone, but you don't need to get people killed either. Find your balance and slide.

I remember being late to the theater and being in a rush to get there. The movie is so exhilarating! I felt like a totally different person leaving the theater. The glitches in the beginning were tyler (Brad pitt). They explain it during Tyler's projectionist job. Its supposed to show ed Norton starting to slip. They say it over and over throughout the movie, but you will never see it your first time. The script was taken from Philip k. Dicks book by the same name so yeah its phenomenal. You should watch A Scanner Darkly if you havent seen it. Same author. Robert Downey jr. Is in it too if you need extra incentive.
First saw this film 20 years ago, when I was 10, movie didnt make a whole lot of sense to me, its only really watching it as an adult I realise how impactful it is ! Seeing Brad pit flash up at the start of the movie 2 times, implying that there was already 2 personalities there before he realised it, the more I've researched into dissociative disorder ect you see the different layers in this film, I watched it recently so that's probably why this video is in my recommended, great reaction or review or whatever you call these ! Love the style and the edits !
Marla Singer and Tyler are both in his imagination. No one ever interacts with Marla and the cut flashes happen as she is introduced along with her "lagging" as you called it. In the end, he is dying but him and Marla, who is in his head, watch as his world collapses and he says he is finally okay....then he dies, which is represented by the buildings collapsing.
Marla is actually another aspect of Jack's split persona. As a woman-Marla does not have the sick need for self actualisation. She is a 'sensualist' she fucks fearlessly, feels without fear, isn't afraid to say she needs someone or misses someone, not afraid to say why she goes to cancer-meetings...she already knows why she does what she does and why she needs it.without losing herself.. Qualities toxic men find 'weak' but secretly they wish they could 'feel' with such abandon and still be as strong. Jack knows: he could never have Marla. Could never be like Marla. That's why she manifests. Note: This does not mean he's been fucking himself. He imagines Tyler to be the only type of man, women 'really' want. And he can never be Tyler. Jack is a man who lost himself.
People absolutely do interact with Marla. Everyone sees her walk into the testicular cancer session, the woman hosting the guided meditation class tells her and "Jack" to share themselves with each other, the waiter advises against "The lady eating the clam chowder," the member of project mayhem drag her into the building at the end. The end is him getting over his alter ego and connecting with a real person. The flash cuts are all of Tyler, and one does not happen as she is introduced.
I'm aware that I'm late but I just found your channel today and am a huge fan of Fight Club and Edward Norton. I honestly suggest Primal Fear, it's a bit slower and it's a courtroom drama but it's Norton's first role. It's also a lot more character heavy. It is SUPER underrated and honestly my favourite story of all time.
I never considered the similarities of Limitless and Fight Club until I noticed how similar their opening credits sequences are. I would be the MOST annoying person to watch this with. I've read the book a bunch and listened to the commentary. I'd be like a human "Pop Up Video".

I don't think I've ever seen anyone catch the twist before it's revealed. Which is particularly impressive when you watch the movie again and realize it wasn't even trying to hide it. Once you know it, it seems so obvious. Brilliantly executed.

I already read the book, so Fincher spoiled the ending. Palahniuk is definitely in my top 5 ever. I can only think of about 3 authors that have made me physically gag while reading, to the point that I have to put a book down for a breather before I vomited. Ellis, Palahniuk, Pynchon. I think Burroughs came close once.
Fun fact: when they did the first lunch scene Norton was legitimately supposed to punch Pitt but he got nervous and really did pinch Pitt in the ear and that was the genuine reaction to it. They found it funny so they kept it in the movie

The scene with the convenience store worker is so beautiful to me. He gave that guy the most priceless gift you could ever give someone, gratitude for their life. If only everyone could be so lucky. That worker thought he was going to die. He thought that it was all over. In that moment, his life was flashing before his eyes and he could finally see with clarity the truth about life, the truth that life is a blessing and every second you draw breath on this earth is a gift. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and his life was about to be permanently gone. He wanted another chance, he wanted to live, “God let me live and I’ll never take another second for granted.” Then Tyler let’s him go. He received the greatest gift, the only gift he could ever desire in that moment, his life. Never will he take it for granted again. We could all use a near death experience.
And he probably got PTSD with it for free. Such an awesome gesture by Tyler
So. Those scene splits you caught at the beginning and throughout the film, are flashes of Tyler. If you go back to those scenes and slow it right down you can see it. That’s why they put in the “cigarette burn” scene for exposition. Such a great film.
"Where is My Mind" - The Pixies If that's not the best fucking song idk what is. It shows up in so many great movies and always fits perfectly. Fight Club, Trainspotting, Southland Tales (Surprising nobody knows about this movie), and a bunch of others. It always accompanies a reality break.

One thing I'm surprised nobody mentioned. As the movie goes on, Norton's character gets skinnier and paler, while Pitt's gets more buff and tanned, as his personality exerts more control.
Norton and Pitt changed their lifestyles for this role to this end.
I think this is definitely Brad's best film. 12 Monkeys, Snatch, and Meet Joe Black (which he was making at the same time as this movie) are also really good performances from him, but I think Fight Club is him at his most natural.
The original "pillow talk"-scene had Marla saying "I want to have your abortion". When this was objected to by Fox 2000 Pictures President of Production Laura Ziskin, David Fincher said he would change it on the proviso that the new line couldn't be cut. Ziskin agreed and Fincher wrote the replacement line, "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school". When Ziskin saw the new line, she was even more outraged and asked for the original line to be put back, but, as per their deal, Fincher refused xD
By the end of the movie Ed Norton's character (who doesn't have a name) is kind of in love with Marla. Since Tyler wants to kill her because she knows too much (because Ed Norton broke his promise not to talk to her about Tyler), his only real concern was her safety. And since Tyler knew the buildings were empty, so did he. ("If you know, I know".) Definitely worth a rewatch. Whole different experience.

The last two buildings imploding at the end of the movie fall exactly the same way as the Twin Towers on 9/11. The movie was made two years before in 1999.
All skyscrapers purposely demolished using controlled explosives always fall that way.
The first time I saw this movie I was fourteen, and it was one of those cases where we had to buy a ticket to another movie and sneak our way in, but we got caught and kicked out the first try. We never even made it in the second time with the doors being watched. Third time was the charm, and all that effort to get in and see it just made it all the better. It almost made it feel like we were part of the movie.

Tyler mentions hitting rock bottom a couple times... "You're one step closer to hitting bottom." I always viewed The Narrator shooting himself as that moment he couldn't get any lower, thus didn't need Tyler anymore.

Fight Club, probably one of the most misunderstood movies of all time, is ultimately a movie of describing the (healthy) stages of masculine development:
Stage One: Conformity, where your sense of self is weak, your life is empty and you allow society to take advantage of you.
Stage Two: Rebelion, where you forego societial norms and rebel, i.e. do destructive and self-desctructive things, in an attempt to find yourself.
Stage Three: Maturity, where you finally integrate those two parts into a whole personality and you have such a strong sense of self that you know what you want out of life and don't have the need to rebel anymore.
In essence, Edward Norton ''killed'' Tyler the moment he realised he did not need him in his life anymore and that he could take control of it just fine.

But I like the ending of Fight Club's film adaptation, which probably forecloses the sequel's film adaptation; something I suspect would be difficult in its own right. I would like to see an adaptation of Damned and its sequel(s). So far, Fight Club, Damned, and Doomed seem the most worth reading (and, should I get my wish, watching)
One of my favorite movies of all time. Timeless and morose. Tackles the loss of identity and spirituality in the midst of consumerism and devaluation of human life. Tyler Durden is the messed up vision of human "Free Will". The guy who does everything opposite just because.

As someone with chronic insomnia, who only sleeps 2-3 hours a night, it does get this bad sometimes. Maybe not so bad as Tyler Durden bad but living life feeling like it's fake, certainly.

Yeah Already Recorded It, Probably The Most Disturbing Movie I've Seen
Loved AHX. Saw it when it was new - like I did with Fight Club. Difference between the two? I’ve never been able to watch AHX a second time. I’ve tried but I can’t make it through. Fight Club, much more rewatchable! More fun to see someone experience for the first time. A real coming of age story for the young professional.
This is one of those movies that you have to watch twice, now that you know the twist and you can look for clues.
Patrice O’Neal perfectly broke down this movie. He said it’s a lame guy hero movie all about self hate, guilt, the burden of dishonesty. “It’s a dream movie. ‘I’m dreaming I’m a better man’ movie. That’s what Tyler Durden is, he is an imaginary, better me.”
This is one of the best book to film adaptations, imo.
Definitely helps that it's a short book.

You gotta remember that he was dealing with insomnia. He said he woke up in different places and times etc. and didn’t remember it.
So him being Tyler was just part of of the insomnia that he doesn’t remember then suddenly it caught p with him.

I think when tyler "died", the narrator just became both personalities. Like the separation he'd created, ceased to exist, and both sides of his personality just merged
David Fincher's entire filmography is AMAZING. He really puts in the work to make every film as best as he possibly can. He started out with making music videos for Nine Inch Nails, and p much every movie has this dark and complicated vibe, even The Social Network. His movies also seem to magically not age, especially Se7en. Highly recommend that one, too. but it's pretty brutal, so fair warning lol
Also! my fav thing about this movie is how little we really know about Ed Norton's character. Not his name, not his past. Just lots of hints to pick apart without any concrete evidence. Like all the "I am Jack's [blank]" journals might have been written by him. And Tyler's story about his dad could easily just be the Protagonist's dad. And when you consider Dissociative Identity Disorder is mainly caused by trauma, he might have grown up in that ugly house and lived a horrible life before the start of the movie. and that could explain why the cops knew the phone number for the place to reach him. All these cool details, but never anything really spelled out except for the twist at the end.

watched this movie first time around mid 2000's while eating tacos. now everytime I watch it again it's become my "ritual" to eat tacos while watching it haha. one of my top 5 movies of all time
PRIMAL FEAR !! It is so underrated and somehow hardly anyone has seen it. It is my fav ed Norton movie. I usually watch fight club and Primal fear together.

Fight club has two be watched twice. It’s actually very well made in that it acts as two different movies when you watch it twice. The second experience is as fun as the first

After so many times of watching this online as a reaction, ive realized something. Youre not supposed to go "HE blew up the condo?!" Its supposed to be "how did he know where the condo was?" But thats only if youre REALLY paying attention like he was in this
If memory serves, the grade school line was improvised too. The original line from the book was something along the lines of "I want to have your abortion" but someone on the crew for the film asked for it to be changed, even though audiences laughed in test screenings. They came to an agreement where the line would be removed, but what they came up with to replace it HAD to stay in no matter what, and they could have complete creative control over what they used instead. The current line was added, getting an even bigger laugh from the audiences and the person who complained said "Please, God, put the abortion line back in."
Apparently another improvisation was the glass stuck to his arm in the scene where he beat himself up in his bosses office. Norton on a whim stuck some of the glass to the fake blood and they kept it in.
The crew even had shirt made of the abortion line

Well actually at 10:38 when Edward Norton punched Brad in the ear it was actually a real punch, David Fincher if I am not mistaken asked Edward to do that without Brad knowing it. So Brad's response/act back wasn't scripted at all. I don't know if he actually for real punched him back after he got punched but I wouldn't be surprised if he did, if I got punched for real especially without knowing it, I would probably swing right back 😂 so yeah that scene was some what improvised by the director and an Actor without the other actor knowing it, very strange and Interesting choice but it worked 😂

Funny Fact: The line about the Lead Salad was something Edward Norton came up with during the audition and they had him use it later.
The flickering effect early on is almost certainly portraying the character's insomnia.
When you've been awake for long periods due to it, with no sleep, you'll get some visual hallucinations.
And the deep rumbling/drilling sound before you go 'out' and lose yourself but you still awake. Insomnia is WEIRD! I hate it.
It is Tyler building in his subconscious. If you watch those bits frame by frame, it is Tyler standing there. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it 😊

The shot were Norton shows his bloody teeth is actually Fincher checking to see if they looked right and he liked it and put it in the movie.

The image of Tyler kept popping up in the beginning to represent his mind deteriorating. His alter ego was slowly coming out. I read this book around 10 times and the movie was wonderfully made to fit the vibes of the book.

In the commentary Edward Norton is talking with Brad Pitt about the fact that it was snubbed for a lot of awards, but he takes solace in his belief that this movie will influence an entire generation of young men the way the film The Graduate influenced a previous generation, and he's not wrong. Fight Club came out my freshman year of college, and you have no idea how much this movie influenced young guys from high school to college age. If you asked 10 guys back then, 50% of them would probably tell you this was their favorite film at the time. Actual fight clubs started on campuses across the country. If a girl listed this as one of her favorite movies, it was an indicator that she was a cool chick.
I think he was just happy to have his mind back in the end. Also, Marla probably never existed either.
One of my best friends in college was named Robert Paulson.
He loved this movie.
He realized he didn't need Tyler anymore and that intense act was the only way to truly get rid of him.
I still hate the fact that most young men who watch this movie miss the point, and think Tyler is the representation of brave rebellion and affirmation of manhood. In reality, and according to the author of the book, this is a story about the absence of a father figure, and how many young men feel like they'd be more realized and put together, that they would find more meaning in life if they had a mentor.
But when you get down to it the Narrator very quickly understands Tyler brings nothing but destruction and severs all real, meaningful ties to anything or anyone who gives you some purpose or even happiness. All Tyler does is well, mayhem. When the Narrator understands he became a mentor himself, even when the whole point was to free every mind from the restraints of a mindless, meaningless society, he gets it. The other guys are just following him instead of doing their own thing, which was the entire point of Tyler's existence. They have become drones themselves.
In the end he just wanted it all to stop and return to normal.
In the books however, he ends up in an asylum being coddled and cared for by the other members of Project Mayhem. He loses his freedom, his self-determination and his chance at life.
Bottom line: try to live righteously, towards your true self and others. You don't need to become an office drone, but you don't need to get people killed either. Find your balance and slide.

The glitches in the beginning were tyler (Brad pitt). They explain it during Tyler's projectionist job. Its supposed to show ed Norton starting to slip. They say it over and over throughout the movie, but you will never see it your first time. The script was taken from Philip k. Dicks book by the same name so yeah its phenomenal. You should watch A Scanner Darkly if you havent seen it. Same author. Robert Downey jr. Is in it too if you need extra incentive.
First saw this film 20 years ago, when I was 10, movie didnt make a whole lot of sense to me, its only really watching it as an adult I realise how impactful it is ! Seeing Brad pit flash up at the start of the movie 2 times, implying that there was already 2 personalities there before he realised it, the more I've researched into dissociative disorder ect you see the different layers in this film, I watched it recently so that's probably why this video is in my recommended, great reaction or review or whatever you call these ! Love the style and the edits !

Marla Singer and Tyler are both in his imagination. No one ever interacts with Marla and the cut flashes happen as she is introduced along with her "lagging" as you called it. In the end, he is dying but him and Marla, who is in his head, watch as his world collapses and he says he is finally okay....then he dies, which is represented by the buildings collapsing.

Marla is actually another aspect of Jack's split persona. As a woman-Marla does not have the sick need for self actualisation. She is a 'sensualist' she fucks fearlessly, feels without fear, isn't afraid to say she needs someone or misses someone, not afraid to say why she goes to cancer-meetings...she already knows why she does what she does and why she needs it.without losing herself.. Qualities toxic men find 'weak' but secretly they wish they could 'feel' with such abandon and still be as strong. Jack knows: he could never have Marla. Could never be like Marla. That's why she manifests. Note: This does not mean he's been fucking himself. He imagines Tyler to be the only type of man, women 'really' want. And he can never be Tyler. Jack is a man who lost himself.

People absolutely do interact with Marla. Everyone sees her walk into the testicular cancer session, the woman hosting the guided meditation class tells her and "Jack" to share themselves with each other, the waiter advises against "The lady eating the clam chowder," the member of project mayhem drag her into the building at the end. The end is him getting over his alter ego and connecting with a real person. The flash cuts are all of Tyler, and one does not happen as she is introduced.

I'm aware that I'm late but I just found your channel today and am a huge fan of Fight Club and Edward Norton. I honestly suggest Primal Fear, it's a bit slower and it's a courtroom drama but it's Norton's first role. It's also a lot more character heavy. It is SUPER underrated and honestly my favourite story of all time.

I never considered the similarities of Limitless and Fight Club until I noticed how similar their opening credits sequences are. I would be the MOST annoying person to watch this with. I've read the book a bunch and listened to the commentary. I'd be like a human "Pop Up Video".
I graduated in 2004. I came home from high school and would watch this movie almost everyday. It helped shape who I am.
