Aliens Movie Description:
After floating in space for 57 years, Lt. Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) shuttle is found by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at LV-426, the marines find only one survivor, a nine year old girl named Newt (Carrie Henn). But even these battle-hardened marines with all the latest weaponry are no match for the hundreds of aliens that have invaded the colony.
Aliens is a 1986 science fiction action film written and directed by James Cameron. It is the sequel to the 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, and the second film in the Alien franchise. Set in the far future, the film stars Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor of an alien attack on her ship. When communications are lost with a human colony on the moon on which her crew first encountered the alien creatures, Ripley agrees to return to the site with a troop of Colonial Marines to investigate. Aliens features Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, and Carrie Henn in supporting roles.
Despite the success of Alien, its sequel took years to develop; it was delayed by lawsuits, a lack of enthusiasm from 20th Century Fox, and repeated changes in management. Based on his scripts for The Terminator (1984) and Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Cameron was hired to write a story for Aliens in 1983. The project stalled again until new Fox executive Lawrence Gordon advocated for a sequel. Although relatively inexperienced, Cameron was given the director role based on his success directing The Terminator. On an approximately $18.5 million budget, Aliens began principal photography in September 1985. Like its development, filming was tumultuous and rife with conflicts between Cameron and the British crew at Pinewood Studios. James Horner composed the film's score. The difficult shoot also affected Horner, who was given little time to record the music.
Aliens was released on July 18, 1986, to critical acclaim. It was well received for its action, but some reviewers were critical of the intensity of some scenes. Weaver's performance received consistent praise; other members of the cast were positively received, including Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein (who played Colonial Marines). The film received a number of awards and nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Weaver at a time when the science-fiction genre was generally overlooked. The film earned $131.1-183.3 million during its theatrical run, one of the highest-grossing films of 1986 worldwide.
Aliens is now considered to be among the greatest films of the 1980s, one of the best science-fiction or action films ever made, and one of the best sequels ever made. It has been called equal to (or better than) Alien. Aliens is credited with expanding the franchise's scope with additions to the series' lore and factions such as the Colonial Marines. With its effect on popular culture and fan following, Aliens has inspired a variety of merchandise which includes video games, comic books, and toys. The film was followed by two sequels - Alien 3 (1992) and Alien Resurrection (1997), neither of which were as successful. The Alien series has prequels to Alien (Prometheus and Alien: Covenant), and a fifth sequel was in development in 2020.

@@Dave3Dguy Another line he missed (the later one when Hudson says "Yeah, when they said alien, she thought she meant illegal alien and signed up" had a funny bit of backing to it. When Vasquez's actress went to audition, she seemed to be the only one who wasn't dressed somewhat militarily, because she made that very mistake.
We may need to talk to Mr. Freeze about that burn.
@@MiriOhki and contrary to belief, Jenette Goldstein didn't dressed as a hispanic. She wore a sleeveless blouse and the casters noticed her well defined shoulders and biceps, since she had working out to keep herself busy between roles.

To be fair, Lance Henrikson (Bishop) has been taken out by two of those things and technically by one of them even if he didn't die from it and Janette Goldstein (Vasquez) has been taken out by a Xenomorph, a T-1000 and an Iceberg
Also most likely an Alien Mimic as well (albeit, off screen), not as iconic, but he was superb in Edge of Tomorrow.
So sad he died.

Lance Henrickson was killed by a t800 in Terminator, by a predator in AvP and by a xenomorph in this movie. Give him the credit he deserves same as Paxton (r.i.p.).
"Get away from her you BITCH!" has got to be one of the best one-liners of all time!
Fun Fact: According to Bill Paxton, he improvised many of his lines including "Game over, man! Game over!" His famous line "We're on an express elevator to hell, going down!" was probably improvised as well, as it doesn't appear in the shooting script.

Yep this is the movie where Ripley became a legend in sci fi action cinema, part 1 she was more of a final girl but here the character was fully fleshed out and brought to her full potential. Weaver was Oscar nominated for best actress for her role in Aliens by the way.

"They didn't even train her. She's a natural." No. Since her pilot's license was revoked, she's been doing loading work at the space dock to keep busy, and has been certified for that type of loader. Several weeks/months pass between her trial and them leaving on their mission.

What do you mean, "stopping"? They only ever made two movies in each franchise ;-)
Have to agree with Terminator, but not Alien.
It would have been hard to ramp it up in a third movie, so they just switched it again. Maybe you have to like Jeunet's darker movies to appreciate the fourth Alien movie, but I think it's OK. The only thing against it is an uneven cast. Some are great - Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, Brad Dourif. And some should have stayed home - No names, but the director works with some regular actors...
The shot where a Xenomorph rise up from the water behind Newt is one of the most iconic "Horror Inducing Shot" i've ever seen.
A fantastic shot and Cameron knew exactly when to cut the scene.
one scene did that just a bit more for me .... the scene where they were running in the ducts towards Vasquez and they jump to the sidewall while running at her ... that was such a great shot
glad you watched the Director's cut. Ripley's daughter, Amanda, becomes the main character in the game Alien: Isolation, 15 years after the first movie.
That’s how we know she didn’t die at 66. She died about 100 times at 26.

The director's cut is fine. Though I think one should definitely watch the theatrical first, and then go back and watch the director's cut afterward for the bits of "colony backstory."
I liked most of the extra scenes in the Director's cut.
Except for the sequence with the colonists. That was a mistake.
It gives too much away, too soon, robbing the later search for the colonists of some of the suspense it had in the theatrical release.
I hate this cut just for the colonist scene, that was an essential original edit and a much better movie without it.
Other fun fact: the photo of ripleys daughter is a real photo of Signorney's mother!
It was a combination of Sigourney herself AND her mother, combined by one or more of the graphic artists under the direction of Peter Lamont.
And like that I know he's watching the director's cut. :D

And they modeled Amanda Ripley in Alien: Isolation on a younger image of Signorney’s mom.
Wasn't her mother dying at the time to. So her emotions are fully real.
Funfact: Unfortunately, and despite animal safety personnel being on set at all times, one of the Xenomorphs was injured during one of the scenes, requiring an acidblood tranfusion at a veterinary hospital. It made a full recovery though.
*The hospital made a full recovery after the acidblood transfusion punched a hole through decks 4-9.

He also ripped a lot off of pocahontas, dances with wolves and mass effect, but hey...

For Avatar, Cameron was originally going to get Michael Biehn to play Colonal Quaritch, but decided to go with Stephen Lang instead because he already had Sigourney Weaver.
When I was a kid in the 1980's my local city museum had a special effects exhibit. In the middle of the main lobby was a FULL SIZED QUEEN and Ripley in her power loader grappling while the end fight scene kept playing on laser disc on a loop. The queen was HUGE. At least 12ft tall and 20+ feet long.
Now I got nostalgic.
Not that I ever saw that exhibit, but ... laser disc...
The other exhibits I remember were the Winebago from Space Balls and the head of Mega Maid. Full sized Johnny5 from Short Circuit and the matte painting from Ghostbusters of the exploded penthouse corner. That's all I remember.
"Whoever wrote this scene right here, good job, man." James Cameron wrote the entire movie. His original script was titled "Mother," and it was about a space station that becomes infested with insect-like aliens. When Cameron got the job to write and direct Aliens after the success of The Terminator, he adapted his 'Mother' screenplay into Aliens.
Almost completely true, Cameron already wrote the script for this and Rambo: First Blood Part II during a delay in making Terminator as Arnold was contractually obligated to be in Conan the Destroyer which pushed Terminator to being released in 1984.
The story was also influenced by Walter Hill's contributions coming off of the success of his film Southern Comfort, which served as the initial basis for the film until James Cameron helmed the project entirely.

@@wiredtardis Yes, I know that story about Cameron writing Aliens and Rambo: First Blood Part II while waiting for Arnold to finish work on Conan The Destroyer so they could resume work on The Terminator. It was all in the DVD documentary. lol True, Walter Hill did write his own treatment for a sequel to Alien, originally called Alien 2, but Hill was never really good with science fiction and Dan O'Bannon resented a lot of Hill's critiques of his script for Alien, and Hill apparently couldn't understand science fiction and didn't like it, according to O'Bannon.
Cameron actually saved the Aliens project by adapting his ‘Mother' script for Aliens, which Cameron was inspired to write after having read Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Cameron even had the actors playing Colonial Marines read Starship Troopers as preparation.

Agreed - never really liked how they killed off Hicks and Newt in the next one. It feels forced and frankly it's just milking the franchise for more profit. Also, Ripley hanging out with a bunch of prisoners held in check by a religious mania sounds like a really bad fanfic. Alien was amazing, Aliens was terrific - everything past that felt like crap...

@@artygunnar They also almost ran down the cameraman in one shot. When the Marines are rolling into the atmosphere processer and we get the shot of the APC driving up to the camera, it almost hit the camera and operator because the thing was so heavy and the driver braked to late.
They did however use stop motion for the hydraulic loaders that were moving behind Ripley when she was operating the loader for the first time. Not hers, but the ones in the background. Hard to notice because the stop motion versions are rear-projected behind her.
Oh, also the Alien Queen, she's a massive puppet, built full scale with a pair of operators inside of her in order to move her little T-rex arms

I saw this in the theater in high school. I had not seen Alien when I saw this one announced, so the week before I watched it, and I was so hyped for this one.
I remember watching Siskel & Ebert on t.v. review this movie. Ebert loved it, and Siskel said "there were just too many aliens". I remember yelling at the t.v. "well, it's not called humans!"
@@garyglaser4998 Their job is to direct more attention to themselves not to give honest reviews in all cases. Sometimes they'll do real reviews, sometimes they'll gush on movies not good enough to deserve it just to promote them, and sometimes they'll do a good cop bad cop routine to work in a hot take to get more attention.
I think I saw it on VHS. I think I remember being confused about the title Aliens and not Alien II.
Fun fact, when Hudson gives Vasquez crap at the briefing "she saw aliens, thought they meant illegal aliens, and signed up" that was a rib on Jenette Goldstein who showed up at the audition thinking that's what the movie was about.

Henricksen wanted a role as an android so when he lost out on the role of the T-800 in the Terminator, Cameron promised to make it up to him.

The actor who played Vasquez also played John Connor's foster mother in Terminator 2. Jeanette Goldstein, she's a badass.

The fact that this movie is 25 years old and it's better than anything made today says something about what Hollywood has done wrong since. I saw this in the theatres and it was a blast. Your reaction videos show that older movies really do kick ass.
The absurd, relentless, LONG action sequences in this movie......it just won’t stop until the credits. No CGI or computers anywhere. They don’t make em’ like this anymore.
The tension in this film is so fantastic. I saw this when I was 9 years old. My dad took me to see it. I had NEVER seen anything like this in a theater. I was so blown away. I wanted to go back to the movies the next day.
The only comparable modern action film is Mad Max fury road

Remember “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” John Conner’s foster mom was also played by Vasquez! The T-1000 took her form and stabbed the foster-dad through the milk carton with the arm sword thingymajiggy.

She was also a 3rd class passenger in Titanic.

I don't think we are gonna ever get back to a time in Hollywood where movies are made this well. Great effects that to an extent still stand up to the test of time, a cast of characters who have depth and flushed out so that when they die, you feel sorry for them. Great writing, dialogue, and reactions to situations that is realistic to how real people act(with the exception of the ones who won't listen to her, they're being stupid beyond belief, but then again they are pencil pushing desk jockey officers). This is how you make a sequel. This is how you make a strong female character. This is how movies should be made.
Keep in mind when this movie came out PTSD wasn't common knowledge like it is now, it was a fairly new study.

Apone was an actual US Green Beret in Vietnam. He ran a boot camp with all the actors in his squad except the LT and Hicks I believe... Hicks came on the cast to replace another actor.
That's why they have that bond. The Making of Aliens is brilliant to watch, the shooting was hell.
You're right on the money! Everyone was in the boot camp except for Ripley, Burke, and Gorman- so they would all be seen/treated as "outsiders" . And of course we all know Michael Biehn was replaced as Hicks last minute.
As whinny as his character was, Bill Paxton nailed his portrayal of Hudson, and had most of the funniest lines. RIP Bill Paxton :(
Another of my favorite Bill Paxton roles is the movie Near Dark, that came out a year after this, and had a better part of this cast in it.
Near Dark is a hidden gem.
Always liked that "in the moment" there was no hesitation. Hudson was badass.

Near Dark is a masterpiece.
I prefer the smooth-head alien design from the first movie, but this was a very good redesign. It also had a practical purpose. The ridges made the suits much more resilient to ripping/tearing, and not only did they need to aliens to do more physical action in this movie, but they also only had about 8-10 suits in total. I was pretty amazed to find out they had so few suits for production, yet still managed to make you feel like they were battling a horde of hundreds.
They were originally going to keep the smooth-head design, with the suits having a transparent dome on them, but the domes kept breaking so they just left them off
Bill Paxton was great. I love how often he gets to go against different kinds of creatures. He had a small role in terminator, amazing role in aliens, and got to go against the predator in Predator 2.

This was James Cameron's first major studio project, and it was apparently hell to make. By that, I mean that Cameron had never worked with a union film crew before, which the majority of this film's crew were, and therefore Cameron's already intense perfectionistic directorial style clashed with a crew who were required to start and end work, as well as go on lunch and teatime (this was shot in England) break at specific hours. This meant that finishing shooting scenes seemingly took forever, because Cameron had little control over how long he could keep the crew working, combined with him being so particular about how he wanted shots and effects to be set up. There were lots of intense production ethics confrontations as well, especially with the 1st Assistant Director, and Director of Photography, both of whom were fired partway through production, and at least one of them replaced. Post-production was stressful too, because the project needed to be finished in time for a set release date by the studio, which meant that composer James Horner had only two weeks to write all the music for the film, by the time the editing (which also took longer than usual just to splice in all the white flash frames into shots with gunfire) was done. As you can imagine, that's basically no time at all to write original music, time it to the action onscreen, orchestrate it, print music for the musicians, and then rehearse and record the music with the orchestra. It likely explains why there's both not very much music in the film, and what little there is seems to be just a handful of minimalistic cues replayed a couple times.
Also, Cameron arranged a private screening of the movie for the entire crew. No one showed up...

Hi Mell. Yep, James Cameron designed all of it. The Power Loader suits, the Alien Queen(which was a full sized puppet operated by two puppeteers inside and effects controllers working the head features), the large miniature sets/vehicles and how the shots were cut into the full sets(Ripley's fight with the queen was 50% full set and 50% miniature shots...and it was so seamless you can't tell which is which). This film is a master class in practical makeup and special effects, my friend. Peace.
Carrie Henn really did do an amazing job as Newt, considering that this was her first ever acting opportunity. And I do mean first, since she hadn't even been in a school play before this. I'm guessing she stood out also because apparently the other kids who auditioned had been in commercials, and were therefore difficult to convince not to smile while delivering lines.
She actually didn't originally audition for the role, she just came along with her brother Russ for morale support when he tried out. Her brother actually is in the movie in a very small role, playing Newt's brother Timmy

This is such a hype movie with so many "f*** yeah!" moments, and I got extra hyped by how hyped you got while watching it! Such a masterpiece, and one of the last truly handmade films (mostly in-camera model work, rear projection and very little blue screen compositing).
I'm really glad that you called out the art direction, as Alien & Aliens are probably my two favourite movies from a design standpoint. In this one, Cameron actually did a lot of the designs himself - he designed the marines' armour and weapons, the dropship, the basic form of the powerloader, and the Queen. Other designs were done by Syd Mead (the Sulaco interiors and exterior) and Ron Cobb (the colony and the atmosphere processor). Peter Lamont oversaw the final design and construction of everything.
HR Giger actually didn't work on this film as Cameron didn't think he needed him (he planned on using the same basic xenomorph design as the first movie, and wanted to design the Queen himself). The change of design for the xenomorphs' head came about largely by accident. The original Giger-designed alien had the ribs on the skull but they were hidden by the smooth dome. They copied it for the new one, realised that they loved how the ribs looked and still left the dome off!I
Oh, and I'm glad you mentioned the sound FX for the guns. Best gun sounds ever! I want me a pulse rifle!

They didn't train her to use the powerlifter but after the company revoked her flight status she had to get work somewhere. When Burke and the lieutenant showed up at her place they mention off hand that she works on the docks. So chances are that's where she picked up the training and some experience using them.
Yeah, I thought she said somewhere she's certified with those powerlifters.
I never quite understood this minor plot hole.
In the first movie, the company clearly knows about the alien. It's a secret company order that causes all the havoc. And Ripley knows about the secret order (she even reads it on the screen)
But in the 2nd, she accepts severe discipline from the same company, even questioning her mental stability, supposedly because the company simply can't believe her 'crazy' story about a killer alien.
Why does she accept this without protest, without pointing out to the management committee that the company ordered the saving of the alien?
It's not as though she's timid in that meeting in general.

Keep in mind it was 57 years after Alien. Even if those guys are not running on Windows, especially if it was a secret company order, it may have gotten lost or is classified in a way that no one still working there has access to it anymore. Perhaps someone back then tried to save his ass and buried this order deep in the system.
You got a point with Ripley though, unless she forgot, we know little about how that Hypersleep works.
@@DerOberfeldwebel especially a overly long hypersleep. That required hospitalization to stabilize her condition. She might have "gaps" for her brain still trying to remember how to function at full speed.

The queen was completely animatronic by the genius Stan Winston (R.I.P.). Unlike in the previous Alien, the people making "Aliens" did not ask alien designer H.R. Giger for assistence (for which he was disappointed) but Giger still was courteous enough to give high credits to Stan Winston for his design of the queen.
Really? Because I remember Giger saying in an interview that he hated the redesigned aliens, thinking that they were ugly compared to what he'd designed which he called "So beautiful". That said, Giger was a strange man and I get the feeling he didn't like that the aliens were more animalistic and didn't look like a penis with teeth anymore. That said, I suppose he meant he hated the design for the drones and loved the Queen's design, probably because the Queen has big stiletto heels on her feet, so she appeals to Giger's weird fetishes

Because if yes, please, Please, PLEASE watch the Assembly Cut, not the cinema cut. Assembly Cut restores the things in the movie that Fincher was forced to cut/reshoot resulting in a much better and much more coherent movie whereas the thing that landed in cinemas, well, that one's a mess :D

Alien 3 definitely appears to be the most polarizing film in the franchise. Considering that David Fincher was already proving his own superb abilities as a director, and that the acting in it is indeed quite good, but that the script is also one that betrays desperation to both take genuine risks and please studio demands more transparently than in the previous two, it's understandable that it's rather divisive. And, yes. The way it opens is both really contrived and undoes some of the achievements of the previous film in a very stereotypical forced sequel kind of way. However, many will tell you it's at least worth checking out, to at least say you've seen it, because it certainly doesn't completely lack impressive quality and effort. It's just much more of a gamble as to whether or not you'll like it, compared to the previous two, even if you're a fan of the genre.
Yeah, n spoilers on Alien cubed/diced/whatever. :P ;)
But yeah, still salty about that movie, several decades later...

It's fully deserving of a "flawed masterpiece" label and I'm just sad Fincher wasn't allowed to do his vision justice as we could have gotten a movie on the level of Seven or Fight Club. Hell, I'd argue it's my fav in the series (partly for nostalgic reasons as it was the first in the series I saw and as such features my fav alien design) while also recognizing that the cinematic cut is... well... godawful.
And yes, it's super polarizing.
Screw CGI. Practical effects are technically real, and will ALWAYS look better. I wish Hollywood would go back to models and real explosions.

Most of the special effects techniques they used are considered primitive by today's standards yet somehow look 1000000x better lol. That nuke explosion at the end is legit a regular lightbulb being pushed through a hole in a table into a layer of cotton made to look like clouds. Cameron was the master at getting top shelf effects out of the simplest things. This movie also utilizes miniatures like crazy too. It's a shame he ditched all that after Titanic and started falling back on CGI.
I think the alien Queen is some of the most convincing miniature puppetry ever. Never once does it come off as a puppet.

The writer is Gale Anne Hurd, Cameron's former wife. She also did The Abyss, and Terminator 1 and 2.

It's a little hard to find the scene about it, but the reason Ripley is able to use the walker so well with no training is because she secured a job using one after she got out of the hospital -- between then and when Burke requested that she join them in the mission. I really wish they would leave the scene showing that in the movies, because it makes the fact that she's trained on a machine that obviously wouldn't have existed more than fifty years prior more understandable.
One of the top sequels & one of the best action movies ever made.

Burke is so despicable in this movie... Paul Reiser's mother said she gave a standing ovation at his fate - impossible not to hate him! I LOVED Vasquez though - she is beyond badass, imo. GREAT reaction! This film and terminator 2 are two of the best sequels I've ever seen.

You'll probably get some people telling you not to bother with alien 3. But for me it's a fine end to the OG trilogy.
A very different vibe to aliens for sure. More dialogue and mood than action and hype. With gorgeously grim visuals.
If you can get it watch the assembly cut. It's more fleshed out and flows better.

Personally, I like to end the franchise with this one.
This is my absolute favorite movie that I've ever seen. The cinematography, the music, the audio design, acting, writing, chemistry between characters, pacing. 11/10 in every category. This is a movie that I will stop and watch regardless of what I'm doing. I've almost missed a flight because I stopped packing to watch this.
I've had a hard time trying to find the overall motif of the film, until someone mentioned it's a Vietnam film. And you think about it, and it makes sense. The Marines, how they dress, how they act, its a squad behind enemy lines with the enemies coming out of the trees and from tunnels underground. It absolutely fits what we're seeing on screen.
The original Alien creature design was done by Carlo Rambaldi, based on H.R. Geiger's original artwork in Necronomicon. For Aliens, James Cameron hired special effects master Stan Winston to design the newer aliens, after Winston had already worked with Cameron on The Terminator. Winston also designed the Predator costume, and did some of the creature effects in John Carpenter's The Thing due to effects designer Rob Bottin not having enough time to do all of the effects.
I always have trouble comparing this and the first one. In my mind neither is really better than the other. They're almost too different for it to be fair to compare them. Both are the near the peaks of their genres. The first was an atmospheric Sci-Fi Horror while this one was an epic Sci-Fi/Action with Horror Elements.
The actress that played vasqeus is the same actress that played John Connor's step mom. She's a chameleon.
