    Starship Troopers Movie Description:
    In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war... A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost...
    Starship Troopers is a 1997 American military science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier, based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name. The story follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry, a futuristic military unit. Rico's military career progresses from recruit, to non-commissioned officer, and finally to officer, against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an insectoid species known as Arachnids.
    The only theatrically released film in the Starship Troopers film series, it received mostly negative reviews from critics upon release; however, it has received a more positive reception in retrospect, with many critics highlighting the film's political satire. It grossed $54.5 million in the U.S., and a total of $121.2 million worldwide, against a budget of $105 million. In 1998, the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 70th Academy Awards. In 2012, Slant Magazine ranked the film #20 on its list of "The 100 Best Films of the 1990s".
    The film has spawned several sequels - two live-action films, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), and two computer-animated films, Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012) and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017).

    "The more the movie goes on, the easier the bugs seem to be to kill."

    • @ithrilzyne4542
      @ithrilzyne4542 2 года назад +17

      In one of the infomercials they explain that the best way to kill the bugs is to aim for the nerve cluster. In the first drop they shoot the bugs everywhere except the nerve cluster. They spent ages learning to fight human opponents despite knowing their biggest enemies were bugs and then wondered why their first battle failed.

    • @PodreyJenkin138
      @PodreyJenkin138 4 месяца назад

      @@ithrilzyne4542well to be fair they didn't know or want to go to war with them, however yeah they should have trained for them since they were a potential opponent HOWEVER Rico's troop was very fresh and the war started in the middle of their training so who knows what other units learned
      Also yeah the nerve cluster is a nice detail to allow them to kill more bugs faster but also have some take a while to kill

    • @xboxman1710
      @xboxman1710 3 месяца назад +2

      One thing to also note is how they hold their weapons.
      In the first battle they're elevated along with their eyes locked on to the Warrior Bug's mandibles which seems to be the most dangerous part of the bug. When they start shooting you see a lot of holes getting punched into the mandibles but it seems like its mostly carapace. The bug clearly feels it but because their not hitting vital, so the bug can continue to attack and maim them until it either dies from shock, blood loss, or a lucky hit.
      In later battles the Troopers going more for center mass were the nerve stem is. The fact that the Troopers are a bit more hardened by this point means that they aren't panicking any more which is another improvement. This gives them better results but it still requires 2-3 bursts at least before a bug goes down.
      To actually be effective the Mobile Infantry needs to be mobile, bring down a few gun trucks that ride ahead of the main formation to ID bug holes while the rest of the troops ride in APCs to clear out clusters. Or have those strike aircraft on standby to blast any cluster greater than a dozen bugs.
      But the Federation is fueled by blood not good ideas so that's not likely to happen.

    Dude, you are on a roll! Shawshank, Green Mile and then Starship Troopers?! You are spoiling us... and screw the haters! Your form of presentation in these vids is awesome and your enthusiasm for film is infectious!
    It's a shame that this movie didn't get more recognition when it was first released, but between a lot of critics & moviegoers not getting the satire and being in direct competition with Titanic, it was kinda doomed. Fortunately it's found its audience since!
    Carmen had always gotten a lot of shit, but really she's only acting like a typical male character (avoiding commitment, playing the field, stringing someone along and putting career first) while Johnny is playing a more female role (being faithful, dropping the L word etc), so the hate against her behaviour is quite ironic! Verhoeven was quite perplexed at this reaction and had to tone her down after test screenings, because the audience flat-out hated her for treating Johnny like that!
    A note on the visual effects. The space FX were handled by several different companies so the quality really does vary. The CG creature FX were pretty much at the cutting edge of what was possible for the time though, and like Jurassic Park, I think they still hold up today!
    Oh, and there was a computer game that was released a few years after the movie. It was a pretty standard run-around-and-shoot-the-monsters affair, but I enjoyed it!

    I like to think that the reason the bugs started getting easier to kill is because when Rico and the others first started, they was rookies and was just shooting at the bugs as a whole and wasn't really doing much damage to them, but as they started becoming more seasoned soldiers they knew what it took to bring them down. Early in the movie Carl did say that you could remove a limb and they was still 86% combat effective, but if you aimed for the nerve stem you could put them down for good.

    I think there are probably 2 things that explain the fact the characters kill the bugs much faster as the movie goes on.
    1.) The characters start as rookies, and they actually improve their skills as soldiers, as the movie progresses.
    2.) It seems based on some context clues that the war with the bugs started VERY recently, and their huge military industrial complex was already a thing prior to the war. One of the bigger context clues IMO, would be the training facilities all having humanoid targets, and most of their training still focused around things that wouldn't apply to bugs (like the whole 'your enemy can't push a button if you disable their hands.' bit).

    This is one of the best pieces of satire/commentary on a fascist government. Michael ironside (the lt/teacher) once asked Verhoeven why he would portray a fascist regime as successfull since the director had grown up in nazi occupied territory and he said that if he showed it as failing that people would say "of course it failed" but showing it at its peak shows what appeals to people about it.
    quick edit: the reason the officer's outfits look like nazi uniforms was very purposeful to really hit home that fascist/authoritarian regime style.

    I remember watching this movie back when it came out, I was around 5 or so when I saw it with my dad. We were in Arizona with my mum for a nursing conference. This was my first rated R movie :). I was scared shitless of the movie, but I still watched it lol. And after watching it a couple of times I realized it wasn't all that scary.
    Also fun fact: There was an early morning cartoon called, Starship Troopers Roughneck Chronicles. It was actually a good series, had its dark moments, and showed somethings from the book, like the skinnies. Though it didn't have the ape suits, they did have power armor and mechsuits. They did reuse some scenes though because yeah early cgi shows were expensive lol.
    And yes they made games of the movie, when is called Starship troopers Terran Assault which is RTS, and one called Starship Troopers fps where you play as an original character called Marauder. And some mobile game but its shit imo. They're now working on Starship Troopers Terran Command which is an RTS as well.
