My feel box, is when I feel my ball-box and I give them a little sniff, my play-box is when I play with my ball-box until I give myself a chub-on and just rub one out on the fairway or green.
Rick, would you tee up your ball as part of Box 1, 2 or 3? I'd probably nip into Box 3 and tee up after Box 1 (club selection, visualisation) so I can then move from Box 2 (Feel) straight onto Box 3 (Hit), or would you suggest not trying up until you are in Box 3?
@@chriswalt5 lol, yeah you are right. It has been around for long, there are just not many videos that are as simple as Rick's, like this was very easy to understand and not overcomplicated. Other videos are usually around 10 minutes long with too much information, which makes it over complicated and hard to understand. This video was just plain and simple.
It seems so simple, yet so many players don't do it... it really makes a big difference. The pre-shot routine is essential for creating a nice rhythm during your round!
It’s absolutely mandatory to do this, even if you don’t use your specific routine. Since I always ride, I’m looking at the hole as I pull up to the teeing area. If it’s a par 3, I grab my range finder for a quick shoot from the tee and then grab the appropriate club. By the time it’s my turn to hit, I will have decided how and where I need to hit the ball by looking at wind direction and hole layout. At that point, it’s time to hit away. Cheers, Rick. This is a great reminder of the basics that many of us do without thinking too much about the process.
I did a bit of County coaching a couple of summers ago and the coach changed my routine to something similar to this. He also made me focus on alignment and competitive practice and it has changed my game. I was off of 5 before and within a year I had dropped the 5 shots and feel I've become a much better player
Couldn’t agree more on building a routine around these concepts. “Every Shot Must Have a Purpose” book by Pia Nilsson provides these same concepts if like them and more. Any golfer looking to improve their game and not just the swing should have a look at it. Thanks RS for the video.
Excellent video. I will practice this routine, it is one area of my game that lets me down. I have difficulty in picturing the type of shot I want to play. I always try and remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Looking forward to your next video.
Brilliant. I do a similar routine for putts. Once I've finished my alignment, I now refuse to look back at the cup because I inevitably make a last-minute decision made off of an imperfect perspective and mess up up my shot. Prepare and commit. Well done.
Me too. Hopefully I'll win once again. Last time I wiped the floor with the pathetic golfers I play against - I am scratch golfer. Unless you play single digits, you are ABSOLUTE BOBBINS
You're a great coach Rick. I've finally started hitting great numbers like over 110 mph clubhead speed, ball speed 165mph avg carry 277 yards, total 300 all from watching you consistently. I've been a subscriber for quite a while and love when you release new content on a regular basis. Thank you again, hoping when this madness is over you can make it over to Canada to play.
Perfect video for today. I was just on the course yesterday playing nine holes and noticing my erratic “routine” or lack thereof. This is a part of my game that needs focus. Thanks again
Definitely something I need to get into my game, managed to get down to index 7, but need to make changes/implementations like this to progress further. Cheers Rick, good pointers.
My pre-shot routine: Walk up, waste two absolutely perfect practice swings that just lightly skim the grass, which would result in a perfect touch on the ball, without even leaving a divot, then address the ball and chunk the ever living hell out of the earth 6 inches in front of the ball, come out of the divot I just made and still manage to _THIN_ the ball itself and hit it 30 yards past the green. I’m _REALLY_ good at it.
That's exactly why I stopped taking a practice swing in my routine...and also why I don't go to the range before my round, don't want to waste the good shots 😁
Love this, I just started using the think box play box. And I often found myself going back and forth as I thought about the feel. Love this addition. 😀
Behavioral science, neuroscience (moving forward), psychology, and sports science (biomechanics) comes together... I like it Rick - I have a slightly different routine, but this is a pretty good starter for most. Competency in most routines will develop solid autonomy, and once you've developed autonomy it becomes much harder to get "phased" out.
Good short description of concepts covered in the book "Be a Player" by Pia Nelson and Lynn Marriott. Great read highly recommended book that is easy to re read or listen too if you start struggling with your game mid season. Also great video RS, this is good for more visual learners
I like your description of the 3 boxes, but additionally in Box 3, a lot of golfers, pro & amateur, have a sub-Box 3 in which they perform a “move” before they pull the trigger. Like Justin Thomas who brings his club back to parallel, which I have incorporated in my pre-swing with some success! 👍
@@cameronknowles6267 my biggest rule is never aim straight even if I’ve been hitting it straight because I would rather hit a curve into the fairway then hitting it down the middle and getting a bad break
Rick can you do an updated what’s in the bag for this upcoming season? Or if you’re thinking about switching any clubs up? Thanks keep up the good work!
Hey Rick, Would you play a par 5, and it explain your pre shot routine before every shot. What you are thinking, feeling, etc...? I think it would be a great addition to this video!
Honestly no one talks about pre shot routine but all the best players have a signature routine. (ie JT or Rickie with the takebacks behind the ball or Wolff simulating his body and hands at impact before his takeback). I think Ill start to add this for some consistency
Hi Ricky! So what do you do when a round starts going bad? Do you go back to basics lining up the club, making sure of the grip, extra time visualizing and thinking positive? Also, under normal circumstances, do you have a specific landing area picked out for each and every shot you make, thereby attempting to gradually get more accurate? Thanks for the great videos!
Got in to habbit of not walking through the front of the tee markers but going round them and starting from the back looking down the hole, just got in to routine few years back and kept to it
On my pre shot routine, I always use 2 box and I name them the red Zoom is where I do all the thick, club selection and everything...... Before I get to green zone.... The green zone is where I'm confident and hot the trigger.... But sometimes when get to green zone and start to feel something weird, then I go back to red zone and start over.
Hi Rick first of all great videos I have been watching you for 2 years trying to learn golf and I'm planning to get into golf after lockdown. Question for advice. To start playing golf is it best to start off on a golf range or on a course and why?
My preshot routine is standing behind the ball aligning where i want the ball to start and picking a spot in front of the ball to make sure the club face is aligned and then i stand over the ball and get aligned and comfortable and then go, no practice swing. And then I make sure before i hit i pick the smallest thing I can and think about hitting it to that spot. Aim small miss small
I really believe this video will helps loads of golfers play better and much more consistently.

Good advice! I try to do this at the driving range, as well, to emulate what happens on the course. (And keep myself from rapid-fire...)
One of my favorite videos. I’m going to try this for sure. Like the structure.
You don’t understand how long I’ve needed this!
Where have you been? This routine has been used for over 15 years at least! Still good stuff.

My pre shot routine: walk up to the ball and think about not shanking it.
hahhahaha
That’s your problem
😂🤣😂🤣😂
And then shanking it ...similar to mine
Same for me, but instead I just thin my iron and the ball goes skating.
Ahhh I see what I have been doing wrong... I have been stepping into the fourth box titled "Where the $%^& did my ball go"....

Sounds like a lesson from “Vision 54”. Their coaching and lessons are great as well.
This type of information is more beneficial than swing mechanics. Keep it up.
I literally went over this with my instructor on Saturday. Wonderfully done..... Brilliant.
Golf Sidekick has been a HUGE advocate of this thinking!
This is absolutely perfect!!! Golf is all in the mind and this is a perfect mind settling routine. Well done
