Thank you for inspiring to buy my first set of clubs. You’re the reason I’ve gotten in to golf and while it’s so difficult starting out, I’m really enjoying it. Thanks for all the tips!
I want to thank you for this. I’ve been struggling for years with my driver slice. I went to the range with 3 buckets and got to a point where every drive went straighter and farther than ever before.
Doing some last minute research before my round in a few hours. Wish me luck 😂😂 edit; We played 6 holes and got rained out :( . Went double, bogey, par, bogey, par, par . Hit some solid 3 woods and one solid drive, thanks rick!
Okay. Listen. I got a TaylorMade rbz from a friend. And I also watched this video twice last night before my tee time today. Small course only 3/4 holes that you should drive. And I did 3. 3/3 were dead on straight. I was amazed! I'm gonna split the credit and say 50/50 video/club. Love your content.
After all but abandoning my driver for years (just lugging it around, seldom hitting it), I've recently watched all of your videos on this topic, and I think I've made a breakthrough. Your setup videos are particularly helpful - so many other videos have failed to explain it so simply. The club head first approach, how to take those steps with your feet to establish your base vs. ball position. That was task #1. But then being conscious of trying to cross over your forearms ... that was what really clicked! I teed off on hole #1 a couple of days ago and hit a 300yd bomb right down the middle. I said, "That was amazing - what did I do??" LOL. Just have to keep at it! Thank you for the RUclips channel, Rick. Best Golf instruction channel on RUclips, by far.
I went to the drving range for the first time yesterday, 1 ball from 80 went where I was aiming, I watched this video along with a couple of your others on stance and grip, went back today and I reckon about 50% went on target (ish). Thank you!
I wanted to tell you that your previous driver videos (we just got back from a mid-week golf holiday and I'm just now seeing this one) helped me do two things. 1) Manage to keep the ball in a playable position off the tee and 2) have more confidence standing on the tee. As a result, my last two of five rounds ended in a four over 76 and a six over 78. The first times I've ever broken 80. It feels good to do that, finally, after playing off and on for 30 years. Thank you.
Fantastic video. Clear, easy to understand instruction, with great graphics, and easy, helpful drills/tips that everyone can use. 10 out if 10! We’ll done Rick.
I got my first true birdie yesterday because I utilized the tips and tricks you’ve shown me on here. I now hit the ball much further and arrow straight. My confidence is super high because of these videos. Thanks for everything!!
rick, thanx for all your tips. you are the best and have made playing golf more enjoyable. while i still need improvement i am most definitely getting better.
Hi Rick A friend of mine recommended I watch your videos to improve my golf game. I have watched your videos for the past 5 months. He was right! The difference is AMAZING! I am very close to bogey golf thanks to you!
Rick, I play off 14 and have been struggling to find a draw until recently. I watched your older 3 series stop your slice videos and did as suggested. First I paid attention to my grip, then the face angle, then my swing path. I just got in from playing some of the straightest golf shots over 36 holes ever, shooting 10 over par and then 8 over par. I also put one of my drives at the back of a 382m par 4 green for one and sunk the 2.5m putt for my third ever eagle. So, thank you so much, please keep up the great videos. You are an inspiration. Simon (New Zealand)
Perfect timing on the video, my new TS2 came in the mail the other day and I can't keep it in bounds to save my life. Keep up the great videos Rickie!!
I watched this several weeks ago. In the back garden I hit whiffle balls off a mat (similar to a driving range). My focus is on the back of the ball and I am trying to control my path like you show with the two head covers. My grip is neutral and I try to insure that the club face is square to the target. There is a stake driven into the ground 25 paces out and every once in a while a bill will hit the top of the stake or just in front, it's actually kind of cool. My swing is basically coil my torso, relax my arms and swing the club in an arc. Sounds easy, I try to it 4 or 5 dozen balls at least 5 times a day. Now is is almost automatic. A few days ago at the driving range my 7 iron shots were 155 yards, it was 145 yards. I am 69, I haven't been able to do that for the last 5 years. My 4 wood goes 210 yards or so and rolls out another 10 or 15. Driver goes 230 to 250. Just now, in the garden, a 35 pace group (11 of 12 shots) is 3.5 paces wide and 5 paces long, not sure on how to control distance. Thank you for the 3 simple tips, the have been great.
I thoroughly enjoy rewatching some of the older videos! Rick has always been a wealth of information sharing manageable tips. Thanks for your body of work Rick!
Hi Rick Just watched this Vid and I have written all three things down and in the next hour Iam going outside and try them out and I hope after a while I can hit one half as good as that last drive you did.
Rick… Shiels.. GOAT 🐐 your lessons and tips are the greatest gift to mankind ever. Watched this and the grip video this morning before my round and it instantly improved everything. Thank you 🙏🏽 from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for your expertise.
Don't normally comment to much on any yt videos, but I've got to say a big thanks for this video Rick. My driver shots have really give me a bad time and somewhat put me off going to bigger course. However, watched this intently, picked up on every single aspect. To say it's changed my whole outlook on the game would be an understatement, I've even just brought a new driver as I'm confident it's worth the money now. Went to the range before a quick 9 and my god, my game is so much better! Tonnes more confidence now, thanks again!
Rick, found your video when I was trying to improve my drive. I'm an absolute beginner (6 months), have gone to the driving range 6 or 7 times in the past few months and have even managed to play a couple of rounds. No idea what I was doing with the driver. Watched this ONE video the day before a round of golf and ended up improving on my scorecard by 8% from my previous hit out; mainly due to being able to hit it straight. Immediate impact! Look forward to watching a whole bunch of other videos of yours and putting it into practice. Cheers!
I just love your training videos, you don't overthink everything and make it too complicated. Even my little brain can remember the three tips for a straighter drive. Thank you!
I'm 67 now, and I watch your videos almost every morning, for sure before a tee time, I'm shooting back in the 70's again, (from the Blue Tees) I use your tips alot,,,,,,,,,Thank You
Just got back from the range and wow did this video, along with your other beginner tips videos change my Golf Life!!! I was a self taught bad slicing couldn't hit irons golfer with 0 confidence on the course and now after you showed me how to (hold) (lineup) (swing) the clubs I feel like im actually playing Golf lol... Thank You So Much!!! your Videos are Great! 🔥🔥🔥
Rick you are a genius im back playing after 3 year break because of slice. So i watched your four vids on how to stop slicing...first I showed more knuckle and that worked then i did the rest and holy cow that worked..thanks man great vids really enjoy watching
Well done Rick, on other RUclips pages they go into way to much detail and talk and not only confuse me but bore me to tears, your comments relate to the mistakes I am making and you speak clearly and keep info to the main points, well done mate :)
Excellent video Rick! There are no 'tricks' to hit the ball better. These are reminders of how to remove poor tendencies from your swing. Good golf swings are clean and simple. Don't add any gimmicks to your swing. Follow tips like this to keep things as simple and pure as you can. Well explained! The last point about aiming is important and so easy to do! I always do this method. When you address the ball you can't be thinking 300 yards down the fairway, but you can set up your body and swing based on a point 6 feet ahead of you. Focus only on that alignment, whatever happens next will happen. The other good point you did but didn't explain was: approach the ball while looking at your aiming point, line up your club, and then set your feet. This gets your feet and swing set up at the perfect comfortable distance from the ball. Don't set your feet then place the club at the ball, you'll be introducing some error into your setup. Good instruction!
Love your videos Rick! I struggled with my driver for quite some time. Recently I’ve had the time to play multiple times per week. Your videos have helped my game so much including hitting my driver. I can’t thank you enough!
Thanks this helped a bunch. I have watched Soo many of your videos. I have just started playing and bought a cheap set of clubs to get going. One trip to the driving range and I am hooked. I now hit practice balls in all my free time
Rick really is one of the best ambassadors for the game of golf. Using platforms like RUclips help attract young people to the sport. His eager, friendly demeanor is very welcoming in a sport that can be intimidating. I’m 24 and I’m not joking when I say all of my friends who play consume Ricks videos. Thanks!
Absolutely agree with these three tips you've put here Rick. Great stuff! Another tip I have found is quite important is the position of the ball in the stance, i.e. if it's too far forward or too far back in the stance it really does affect the direction.
Man I've literally only been playing for 3 weeks now and from just watching your videos and getting tips, my swing has improved drastically. Just in 3 weeks it's crazy how far its come already
have started watching Rick's videos this summer, and that coupled with simply playing more than ever, has helped me play my best golf ever. so far. plenty of room to improve. nonetheless, thanks Rick.
I’ve seen a couple of Driver videos by Shiels and on a good shot I can drive nearly 200yds. It’s amazing how much I have improved with these videos. Still have lots of improvement but practice and these videos helped me a lot. Thanks for the tips!
"Swing path is key" indeed. Thanks, it helps. But another important point, at least for me, i need my right armpit to be closed in order to make that correct swing path.
These tips are great. Note Rick's setup/stance here, his feet are parallel to his target line and in line with each other. They are not open (lead foot behind, back foot in front of the other. That typically opens the face like discussed in step 1, and promotes a fade) and they are not closed (lead foot ahead of the other, with the back foot behind. That typically closes the face down / promotes a draw). Take a look down at your feet when you setup before doing steps 1-3 to help get consistent results.
Thanks for the videos and tips, tons of golf videos on RUclips now but your channel and a couple of others have really helped me get back into playing by correcting some simple mistakes I make after 3 years of not swinging a club. God Bless you and have a great day.
Just watched a video on ball design, Callaway graphene. Anyways, I thought besides cutting the ball you could do a pressure test. Put the ball, cut or not or both, and take it to a width of about 35mm. That's shaving off 7mm from the diameter and test the resistance. That will show you how hard or soft a ball really is. And what you should expect before hitting it. Of course the outer layer is important. Softer covers grip the club better for more spin and better green stopping power but not good for bad driver shots. Harder surfaces on a driver usually cause it to spin less resulting in less slicing and perhaps more roll. There's a few cover materials and they cover both hard and soft core balls. So can we do a video on the outer covers and what that means with respect to swing speed, face contact, feel, spin, etc. Also lets look at some standard range balls, from different brands, and what to expect when you go from a range ball to a regular ball that's made different. Does the material of range balls affect how the ball reacts to good or bad shots enough to cause a player to misjudge their playing? If it slices easier and they fix their slice on the range, could it result in bad draws on the course? I've seen both Wilson pro staff which hit very well and titleist which I actually havent had much luck with. So, let's look at compression and range balls and cover material. Thanks Rick.
Thanks, Rick. I recently started using a weighted swing trainer and it really sped up my swing. Now I feel out of sync and went from a consistent 280 hitter to a complete collapse. I plan to hit the range and work on your steps.
Love your video Rick they got me into golf again its a bug and I'm hooked love it played today well and got another round at my local tomorrow the goal is to get my handicap and watching your videos has helped me improve so much so I thank you for that!
Sweet baby Jesus…..seriously I spent a hour watching your videos this morning and just played best game in 40 years ….only play maybe 10 times a year but thx never thought I would enjoy a game as much as today……thank you Rick
Thanks Rick! Being okay with my shoulder angle and hitting up on the ball helped me play one of my best rounds yesterday. You're awesome and keep up the great work! If you ever make it to Arkansas, lets play a round!
Thank you. I used these tips and was able to drive 215 yards. Not as straight as I want it to be but it will get there. Keep the videos coming. Love it all.
All three points are so good! Think the grip point is specific per individual tho. I used to have a very neutral grip but had an open club face at point of contact consistently so I adjusted to a stronger grip (to close the face more) and now I can hit the ball more consistently, on the other hand, Rick is the PGA Pro and I am some amatuer shmuck! Love the videos Rick, keep them coming daily.
You read my mind. I normally have a natural draw but recently I developed a fade/slice and couldn't fix it on the range. Thanks for another great video.
The aiming point several yards ahead of the tee to help me aim was a great tip for me... I tend to look too far down the fairway and not give myself a check point much like having an aiming point while putting.. Thanks for the tip
Love you're videos, ive just started getting back into golf after having back surgery, but I'm finding, I'm either slicing the ball or hitting the top of the ball.
Hi Rick. I follow your Videos regularly. Can you pls tell what should be the Tee position for ball in a straight drive. Whilst, it should be low for a fade and high for a draw. What should it be for a straight drive
I'll watch all the videos and smash the like button too. Your explanations are totally understandable and entertaining. Plus ur pretty likable which is important.
Your videos are the reason I got back in to Golf after over 10 years, I've fell back in love with the sport and have improved so much since watching your videos. I love how relaxed and chilled you are and always have a positive mindset! Its go's a long way 👌
I have successfully (but painfully slow), corrected my slice thanks to your videos (including old ones), spending time down the range with headphones on with your voice guiding me worked a treat! (Sounds like a bloody romance novel!!)

Love that this video was brief and very useful for me.
Love your video Rick they got me into golf again its a bug and I'm hooked love it played today well and got another round at my local tomorrow the goal is to get my handicap and watching your videos has helped me improve so much so I thank you for that!
Was shooting 110 plus 4 months ago. Now shooting low 90's. Thank you for your instructional videos..✌️🏌️⛳
so hard to not love these videos as a golfer, Rick Shiels is the absolute boy
Sweet baby Jesus…..seriously I spent a hour watching your videos this morning and just played best game in 40 years ….only play maybe 10 times a year but thx never thought I would enjoy a game as much as today……thank you Rick
All your videos have helped my golf game in just 2 months 🤘🏻
Whether your striking the ball thin, a little fat, pretty solid SKIP
RUclips vanced friend 😅
I wanna show you how golfers over they age of 45
"Meet Birdie ball... the golf innovation company" SKIP
Great short video. Any tips or "what to look for" on choosing practice mats??
Last tip works the best for me (on the driving range now) Thanks Rick
Looking forward to trying this tomorrow!
Rick, you’re a natural teacher.
My favorite channel on RUclips!! Thank you sir
Your videos are the reason I got back in to Golf after over 10 years, I've fell back in love with the sport and have improved so much since watching your videos. I love how relaxed and chilled you are and always have a positive mindset! Its go's a long way 👌
Wow 🤩 that’ll help me a lot because right now I’m slicing my drives a lot to the right.
I have successfully (but painfully slow), corrected my slice thanks to your videos (including old ones), spending time down the range with headphones on with your voice guiding me worked a treat! (Sounds like a bloody romance novel!!)
Love the videos Rick. Would be great to see one about what type of shaft to have on your clubs (based on swing speed?)
Thanks rick after tip im hitting my driver better appreciated from a high handicapper love the vidoes and tips keep up the good work
