I must say my man you have taken Plein-Air to an industrial level. Nice easel, all 150 horsepower! Excellent rig and idea, plus you must be very comfortable not having to drag equipment around by hand. I might one day use your idea for a setup. Cheers from the outback of Canada!
Another great painting! Thanks for showing us how you mix the colors and apply it! Especially like how you show us at the end your palette. I like watching you paint another masterpiece, and seeing how it is done!
I'm still catching up on your past vids.. This was an interesting painting, but I like your more recent work.. The variations of colors and knife marks you get on your typical paintings is mesmerizing.. Thank you for sharing
Definitely prefer looking over your other shoulder . Had a hard time seeing the colors in this video. But n mj am I love your style of loose scraping around and the simplification of colors . Good eye!
Love how this one came together Richard, from colour to composition, top stuff mate! If you haven't painted over here in Western Australia you should give it a go, some great places to camp out and paint. I'm heading up to Kalbarri in a couple of weeks to paint, can't wait!
Loved it! I mostly use brushes so I really didn't know where you were going all the way through so it was sooo interesting; really absorbing. Great colour and texture ..... so intriguing .... also with the Belgium linen was interesting again. Thank you very much Richard. BTW I was painting the Murray mostly in Victoria about 4 years ago on the banks but travelling in a Winnebago and I thought I was a bit wild but I can see that you're a REAL adventurer!! Good on you!!
I'm paining in Mallorca Spain now but looking at your paintings I really wished that I had been a bit more adventurous with my applications. Love the way you glide your palette knife about to get the textures and colour blends .... I must have seen a painting of yours somewhere out on the Western Plains. Did you ever paint in or around Hill End? Could be because there's a bit of Sydney Nolan and Fred Williams in your work but mainly your paintings really do reflect the Australian landscape essence so well! Must be missing it!!
Yes, sounds like you’re a bit home sick for the Sunburnt Country! Sometimes it hard to appreciate something till you leave it for a while!!! 🎨. All the best with your work, cheers 🎨😊👍
Yes, I'm surely missing that Great Southern Land!! The other artist I was trying to remember that you must be influenced by was Arthur Boyd. I see you've painted along the Murray too ... I'll have to watch more of your videos. So interesting watching you use the palette knife .... I love the expansiveness that it opens in landscapes! Happy Painting/paletting!!
I have had this experience several times but today it was very strong. I didn't see the blue in the pond/lake until you put the blue on the canvas and then it was like someone turned a blue light on the water.
Richard, I just subscribed. Don't know if I will ever be bold enough to try a knife painting but it is exciting to watch with really fine results. Great artistry, Well made video also.
Oh boy, i love your setup...its like Australia...BIG! I usually work on 30x40cm canvas out of my little pochade box. Even my studio setup is smaller then what you have on your Van/SUV whatever...most of my pictures are smaller then your palette. This thing in your hand is meant to be used plaster walls... But the real kicker is the title of the Video...only an Aussie can call this minimalist Plain Air painting! Sorry, i mean you no harm, but as soon as i started your video, i have to laugh and could not make me stop. So good, you made my day.
Super stuff. Bit surprised at the lack of Ultramarine ( and the use of alizarin crimson ) but I guess it depends on the subject and colour fit - reach for them when needed. You cost me money. Had to try. Doesn't take long to realise the "less is more" thing, mess about and you end up with mud. Looks quick and easy but its not. Super technique and setup. Thanks. P.S. ever used cold wax mix in paint? Possibly doesn't work in hot places.
@@richardmusgrave-evans The good stuff about cold wax is the matt finish it gives to paint. I'm betting paintings will look stronger, more intense if you get rid of the shine thrown from the chunks of impasto paint. Might be worth a look.
I like your artwork brother! I have been painting for 20 years and I spent time with Jack Absalom in the early days SO as you could imagine I like and only paint outback scenes as well. Have been a outback tour guide for 30 years so many scenes in my head, and also like to paint in the bush on site. A question do you prepare the belgium linen before you apply the oil paint! like with a gesso? I find that if I dont i get the dull spots where the canvas has "settled" into the canvas…anyhows enjoy your videos, never tried just using a pellet knife on the whole final piece may give it a go...
Richard the clear gesso can I ask where you get that from? I am currently making my own liquid white, roughly 50 percent titanium white and linseed oil as I cannot find liquid white or clear here in Western Australia thanks brother trust you are well...
@@outbush1 I was just reading through the comments and saw your question. Most likely primed with rabbit skin glue. It's clear and sufficient for priming. and then painting straight over it. Gesso really is only used to make the surface white and allow for more coverage of the surface, but rabbit skin glue on its own it perfectly ok.
I love the way you have your camera setup. I can see what you’re painting, and your palette. 👍👍👍

Hey Mate, no worries 😉 Thanks, I’m glad you’re digging my work and vids! Happy painting Falla!!!
I really like this way of pAinting - open to the process, alla prima oilpaintingwith a palet knife. Its really fun to work like that
It's a great spontaneous and direct way to paint Lis!!! Nothing quite like it. :)
Great job sir !
Thanks Mirel!!!
I think your paintings are great. You will have to do a video on your truck setup , its impressive.
Thanks John, yes I’m planning on doing a vid on my trailer and truck setup! Cheers

Clear gesso on the linen?
Correct Jeff!
Large canvas, large palette knife. Can this work with smaller canvases?
Yes for sure Jim!
your painting is acrylic or oil medium
I use oil medium!
very nice work ,good luck
Richard Musgrave-Evans i liked ,,,,nice
My question is what he do with that much left overs of oil, it is a lot, well to me
I put any left over paint back in the tin it came in!
Where is the location?
Central Victoria, near Castlemaine!
i saw this video a long time ago but cant remember where. unless you are painting the same subject ;-)
Hi Janet, this is my newest video and the first time I’ve painted that location!!
Richard Musgrave-Evans thats interesting because the guy I saw had the same setup from the truck just like your
Maybe it was one of my earlier vids!
like the way a tall canvas is used to capture the picture
Thanks Charles!
So I gather from your vids that Australia is basically burnt sienna, yellow ochre and white?
Lol, not to far off!
