Atmospheric / Linear PERSPECTIVE - Three dimensional DEPTH in your PAINTING with colour/tonal value!

  • Today I will be giving a demonstration on how to achieving distance and depth in a painting, with the use of aerial (atmospheric) and linear perspective. This will be done by manipulating the colours and tonal values, to achieve a three dimensional illusion of distance and space on a two dimensional surface!
I will be using oil paint, palette knifes and working on a clear primed - stretched Belgian linen. Recently I've been working on white primed canvas and it is a sheer joy to go back to the raw colour of Belgian linen.
My reference for this demonstration comes from the opal mining town of Coober Pedy in outback South Australia, which is the largest supplier of opals in the world today. I'm working in the Breakaway Country (Kanku to the traditional custodians), which is a beautiful and richly coloured landscape with arid flat topped mountains and vast distances, making it the perfect subject for this tutorial.

Really love your work Richard and your palet knife technique is super good, lots of years of experience, I'll bet. Your painting are always so fresh and bright, due to colour and technique. Keep up the great work, really superbas are your outback videos. I too use palet knives on top of a light brush technique and feel you are so brave to have the monster size barby knife, you have, love it.

What a beautiful subject! It looked great whilst you were busy but once you zoomed in it was incredible! The colours, the slightly geometric marks - it’s fabulous. Thank you Richard for giving us so much pleasure 😊 Jill, UK
