Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
Season - 17
Episode - 03
Filmed on Location at - Scotland, United Kingdom
With the ambition to become an artist, Scott Naismith studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. In June 2000 he left with a BDes in Illustration and printmaking. Since graduating Scott has been a full time artist, working from his studio in Glasgow. Much of his time is spent travelling around the country looking for inspiration for another depiction of the Scottish landscape. The many lochs, glens and isles of the West coast are amongst his favourite subject matter for his vibrant and atmospheric oils. Scott has been lecturing part time since 2004 and now lectures one day a week at the creative arts department of West College Scotland.
Scott Naismith uses vivid colours in a vigorous application to represent the fast changing light conditions of the West coast of Scotland. Colour use often becomes an entirely emotional response to the subject while values can remain representational. The love he has for his native Scottish countryside is portayed in his work through an ebullient energy with which he handles the colour with palette knife and brush.
Scotts recent work concentrates on transitional skies and the many colours involved when light breaks through cloud. These changing skies from dark to light are a metaphor for optimism and hope. After a miraculous recovery from cancer by his father, recent marriage and birth of his 2 children, Scott Naismith draws upon a great positivity and energy.

I love the way you paint in Acrilic and oil. I am from Mexico and Mexico with use a lot color. I love your paintings. Because I love Color, I am not going to be afraid. THANK YOU FOR SHARE YOUR PAINTINGS. I love ❤️
thank you thank you thank you for blending the worlds of acrylic and oil together! I am an acrylic painter who is trying oils for the first time and finding them difficult. I will keep at it but seeing that I do not need to leave my acrylics behind is brilliant. Cheers!
Colour in your Life AND Scott Naismith. Two channels I've. followed for ages. Wonderful to see them together in one programme. I admire Scott's work enormously and find his technique mesmerizing. So many tips and words of wisdom. Thanks for a great video.
Scott's as good at philosophy as he is at painting. There's something very liberating and joyous about what he says and paints. "Accuracy is not as important as confidence." Thanks for this inspiring video, Graeme.
Loved this video. Color is my world!!! Thank you.
What stunning, vibrant artworks
What a treat to see Scott Naismith on Colour in your Life. I have long been an admirer of Scott’s work and also love watching CIYL regularly; having the two combined is great. Thanks for great tips Scott. Don’t think I’ll be painting on my knees anytime soon though😊
I love his paintings , the colors grab my eyes and I just want to see the earth as beautiful as he sees it!
Stunning work Scott. Love the exploding colours.
I'm very inspired! Thank you Scott.
Love Scotts work, full of gorgeous vibrant colour marvellous
What an insight! Such a wonderful and generous artist!
I am a huge fan of Scott's work and it is a privilege to see him at work.
Awesome that you've got Scott Naismith on. He's a wonderful artist. Thank you.
THIS IS WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING.
Colour in your life from the most beautiful country in the world. Scott captures that in his paintings brilliant video well done everyone involved. 😊
scottishwifie14 'Most beautiful country in the world' well said. For the record 'Scottishwife' isn't my wife, but she agrees too! 😀
Absolutely fabulous I LOVE your use of color !!!!!
Your use of colour is amazing ,uplifting landscapes, tfs watching your other video
He is the nearest colourist to Emile Nolde I have seen. Brilliant and what a great teacher.
Great to see. Years ago I asked if they could come to UK thrilled when this popped up as a suggestion to view, I thought Scott had gone down under. Many thanks and best wishes to all!👏
Scott, Thank you for teaching and sharing your expertise without charge. I need to know just a couple of things please. What kind of oil do you use to spread all over the acrylic before your oil colors? Is it liquein, walnut, Gamblin?
Do you mix oil into the paint as well? I would appreciate your answer. Your the best with your CYM and color wheel! Love your method and instruction. Thanks again!
WOWWWW....I LOVE .
Love your work. Thank you
Brilliant!
Thank You from Brasil!
I love Scott Naismith work and he’s a fellow Scot! There is always such amazing colour and contrast in his images!
I agree with the CYM primary. Nice work, Inspiring stuff! I'm glad I have lots of cardboard to try this as well! :)
Nancy tichbornepaint a poppy in water colours
Thank you. Wonderful work
When i heard the word "dreich" I thought of "dreak" which to me would combine Dreary & Bleak and quite nicely describe that weather... thank you for the new word!
I've been a Scott fan for years now because I've always used Magenta, "the closest to" Cyan that I can find and primary yellow for my watercolor primaries. Ive had a NDE 20 years ago and he paints closest to Heaven that Ive seen when it comes to color. That blue looks almost violet blue going on then smears out to more cyan blue. Interesting!
Fantastic really great, looking forward to more episodes
Also I really liked the pacing Of The video
So happy to have found Scott, his art is awesome.
I really do wish Mr Naismith would do more you tube videos again. I used to love them. They are just so rare now! :(
Scott's work is amazing!
Excellent guest! Subscribed to his channel three minutes in!
Not much new stuff over there, but I hope to change that soon. Thanks Kaylee
siempre una bella obra bello
I have two big questions .
With what do I varnish a painting that have both acrylics and oils ?.
If I put oils on top of acrylics do I need to "coat" the acrylics with some special medium first ?
JUST USE DAMAR VARNISH. IT WILL TACKLE BOTH PROBLEMS
@@ColourinyourlifeAu this damar varnish is ridiculous expansive considering the size of the bottle which is 75ml and they say this won't age to well becoming yellow and brittle ..etc
17:07 what medium coat is he using in order to prepare entering with oils on top of acrylics ? is that acrylic medium ? or oil medium ?
amazing
Wow, this was literally just uploaded hours ago, Right on!
Absolutely love Scott's work
Also, had no clue he had released a book! In the process of ordering right now.
Yep just released this morning Australian time and the views are already climbing. Well worth watching Scott in action.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the book.
Scott I heard from Andrew Tischler that he was using Zinc white but was told it archival value was not good
Thank you.
Me gusta esta forma de pintar como usa el Circulo Cromático.
I also enjoyed seeing the finished piece on your youtube website.
what did you coat the acrylic layer with before adding oil paint?
Oh, god, being on your knees and painting that must be a killer - I could do that for a minute and then trying to stand up - the people down the road would hear my scream in agony -
How do you get the oil to stick to plastic (acrylic) for any time?
Scott, what was the medium you used to ‘oil out’ at the transition stage?
Scott, can I ask what program you use on your iPad? It looks like a great way to sketch out a painting and add some color. Thanks!
Gail Williamson Hi, it's called Procreate. My first attempt at using it is here on youtube, a sketch of jimi Hendrix: ruclips.net/video/HeNxNTxrMnw/видео.html
The app is still the best one to use now in my opinion
I’m working with oil pastels ( I’m a newbie!); do you have blending advice?
Lovely, what software do you use to do painting on your tablet?
best bet would be to contact Scott directly, Graeme
Superbest ...
I don't get it, does anyone know how oil paint can permanently adhere to acrylic paint? Ive always been told that acrylic is plastic when it dries. This sounds so cool, but how can it be archival ?
It seems to be the same theory that we use oil paint over gesso which is essentially acrylic. I have several paintings, done over 20 years ago with acrylic beneath, and they are still in good shape. I should add that I've only painted oil over very dry acrylic. I'm not exactly sure what he's doing. ;- )
What medium do you use on the acrylic at 24.00?
Charles Peterson not sure if you meant 24 mins. I'm using flow medium in the skoosher and impasto gel on the pallettes.
Scott Naismith Thanks Scott.
Sorry. I meant 17 mins and thereabouts.
Charles Peterson mostly Liquin, but to be fair, I can't remember the exact mix. This was filmed 8 months ago! If it's any help, I've filmed a tutorial on mediums here on youtube, just use the search.
Scott Naismith Thank you Scott. Liquin is great stuff. I use it myself. It aids drying and creates a nice finish.
I have that pellate knife 😁
Fun .....but ha, my spectrum disorder; really bothered by the edge of the canvas sitting in the yellow paint.
Haha, well spotted, that was one of my easier clean up jobs!
The new pad looks great / very clean too. Curious if you have tried using cold wax to add body in oils? Side benefit is the matt finish helps for copying work for print - less reflection. Anyway, enjoy watching you work.
I do like a bit of cold wax.
May I ask, "Why so many colours?"
Naismith is to colour what Billy Connolly is to comedy.
Very disappointing that you don't reply to questions.
So many figurative and abstract painters totally disregard form .
WOW! Colour on steroids.
The sound wasn't great in this one - the presenter's voice is too loud next to someone who is softly-spoken. Spent the whole time adjusting the volume up & down. Scott Naismith's art was worth the effort tho - so vibrant & alive.
Hi Joanne, this was the first filmed episode for the UK team so a few little areas where we can improve and have improved since more episodes were filmed. We do have subtitles attached to this episode which you can enable on RUclips if that makes it a little easier to follow. Scott's work is well worth the sound issue though, I definitely agree there.
Fair comment Joanne, there was a minor mic issue on the day which may have affected things slightly. As Graeme says, this is almost like a pilot for the shows to come from the UK and the team did great for a first outing.
well said scott, but now the whole world can see what you do, Graeme
Thanks gentlemen for responding & clarifying, I watched the Sally Lancaster episode from the UK team a few days ago & the sound was fine - I should have watched in the correct order :) Graeme, I commented because I already tried the subtitles (despite being from Scotland myself, originally) & I'm afraid RUclips doesn't speak Scottish well at all, so I went back to fiddling with the volume control LOL. Scott, I hope the rest of Australia likes your work as much as I do - best of luck.
Thank you for the feedback, we are always striving to make improvements. Episodes are not always edited in the order that they are filmed hence why you are seeing this one after Sally and Max. I'll see if we can improve the Scottish, though I think that is a tricky language for anyone outside of the UK to understand.
Checked out Scott,s website, it’s annoying AF just like super cool Scott, just wanted see some your work but site is a pile of confusion dude.
try to paint real stuff without white 😯 what you paint is not required so much skill, because you are not use white, therefor no tones diference can be seen in your painting, all the same saturation.
white indeed can kill your pure colours, be aware.
Stop talking and paint
I’m not going to continue watching your videos because you’re NOT telling us the name of each and every paint you’re putting down. This is a VERY important detail and I’m not learning otherwise. So, sorry I’m unsubscribing.
