Tip for Acrylic Paints to keep your colors staying Vibrant (don’t use Titanium white) use Zinc White instead. Titanium White eats the color & dulls the vibrance down. Zinc white will help keep your color mixes more vibrant.
Every medium has a plus side and a minus side. For example, the pluses of oil painting: include mixing wet into wet, slower drying times, thicker applications, etc. The same positives can be the negatives of oil painting: they stay wet, dry slowly, and the surface can get too thick too fast. One medium isn't better or worse than another. Oil and Acrylic are two completely different mediums with entirely different working properties. It simply comes down to the artist's preference. In this case, you either prefer oil paint or acrylic paint; both are excellent mediums of choice.
Now that you opened up the can. You need to spill the tea on why you were fired. Please, my anxiety has been probed. On a more serious note, I find that oil painting is easier to transition to since I've mostly focused on digital art the past decade. I habe some background as we were required to do this medium also at UDK, but definitely the workability of oils is more forgiving than acrylics, albeit materials are more expensive.

Funny, I don't have those problems with acrylics -- I've blended wet into wet with acrylics since my first primative, and have often created thick and and textured painting with it.

Thank you because I’m OBSESSED with portraits and the intricacies of faces and busts; anatomy and string light and the juxtaposition of soft shapes with hard light or vice versa and acrylic can’t capture that dreamy, fantasy state; it’s graphic in comparison and gauche is delicious but doesn’t do it like oil so I’m so grateful for your channel!!!
The cool thing about acrylics is that you can paint densely and then dilute the paint with a lot of water and work exactly like with watercolors. Also they didn't really lose color overtime. If you don't try to fight with acrylics, the painting become to look like a mix between gouache and watercolor painting techniques

I get what you are saying, but i prefer water mixable oils. Acrylics are much flatter in color in my opinion. Water mixables has the best if both worlds
I find that slow dry medium changes the paint flow dramatically. It becomes sticky and entirely different than when using water to blend and flow acrylics.
Using a retarder was something i did the last time I used acrylics before going to oil and it made a very huge difference compared to my other times with acrylics

i recently tried my first painting with acrylics and found myself using so many things to keep the paint wet like slow drying medium, misting the paint with water etc that i feel like just investing the basics into oils instead would just be so much easier

A good way to switch is to switch to acrylic with slow drying medium for a time, it gets you used to the wet on wet paint. I still often start my painting in acrylic with slow drying medium(feel more like oil, but still dies faster) than switch to oil half way through, because oil final result are prettier.
I switched to oils from Acrylics about a week ago. Never going back. I knew I didn't like Acrylics, but never tried Oils till I got some water soluble ones. Everyone's pointed out their reasons on here, and mine are no different. Oils are just easier and more fun. Acrylics were driving me away from painting. Oils have made me love painting again.
@@diogeneslantern18 Yes. I run the hot tap, and put a drop of washing up liquid in the palm of my hand. The wet the brush under the tap and stir it around in my soapy palm. That gets rid of it all. Then rinse under the hot tap, and squeeze it dry in a towel or kitchen roll. I usually shape round brushes in my mouth and stand them up to dry, and flats I just shape with my fingers after towelling dry. There's no smell with water soluble oils. I thin by just adding a drop or two of water soluble linseed oil. I haven't tried thinning with water, but I understand it's possible, if you don't overdo it.
I'm moving towards indirect painting and at first thought that underpainting in acrylic would be the way to go. While mixing up small pots of greys and making grey scale swatches yesterday I thought I would try the same with water miscible oils. The WMOs were a way superior experience and easily blendable which is important.
I like both, acrylics and oils. Acrylics, if you buy good paints eg Schminke Primacryl or Old Holland new masters acrylics, the paints are very rich and vibrant. If one struggles with the quick trying times, use the Ultra Retader from Lascaux, it easily can keep the paint wet for an hour or longer - it’s really the best retarder I found so far, way better than other ones which usually only slow down the trying time about 50%.
Clean your brushes with linseed oil if you're going to be using them within a few days. I get most of the color out,bunch them with elastic, wrap them in saran wrap, and freeze. I'm still using cheap brushes from months ago this way. I use that Brush Dip if I'm not going to be using that particular brush for a while.
I don't seem to have the problem you expressed with acrylics. When I want to slow the drying time I use a little air brush thinner or a paint retarder that slows the drying time. It's been years since I worked with oils but mostly because you can't use oils without turpentine or mineral spirits and I can use acrylics as they are and don't have to think with a lot of water or other thinner and the brushes are a lot easier to get clean.
If you ever use acrylic again, use a wet pallete or a Sta wet palette. you won't waste much paint. the paint will stay wet for quite some time. You can also make shift this with parchment paper over a paper towel. I do paint with both mediums, but I started with acrylics when I was 13 so it's become pretty instinctive. I love oil for all the reasons you say though.

Been shooting acrylic since 1983 through an airbrush and that's all it's good for. Most intriguing is acrylic and colored pencil with airbrush which you've seen movie posters of such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET and Harry Potter. But oil is king. Thanks
Hi there, the hardest thing I find is working wet on wet and picking up colour underneath when trying to apply paint on top. So for example, if I'm trying to lay down and midtown on top of something dark and the dark paint underneath is blending in with the colour I'm trying to apply. I'm wondering if this happens because maybe I'm using solvent in order to make the paint more fluid? Sometimes the canvas feels as if it's a bit slippy. Do you have any Videos that address this Chris? I really want to be able to lay down colour in the way that you suggest in a blocky way, but I can't stop it from becoming far more mixed in smoothed out and blended.
I like using Liquin mediums, because it'll speed up painting about 50% faster than normal. Which, for oil painting, tends to be 1-3 days anyway, so that allows manipulation of colors for the sake of blending. How do you "remove" paint you don't want? Do you just take a clean rag and just physically remove a section of the paint from the canvas, then go back in with the correct paint?
The best match for me is. Do the base in acrylics since they are fast and cheap. Then over the acrylics pain in oils for the detaisl where the long dry time is important.
I painted when I attended art and graphic HS, we used oil paints and other students always thought it was the most difficult technique only reserved for old masters, but to me things like watercolors is the most difficult, oil is just expensive but really easy
Thanks Chris. I always used oils to paint. But I stopped painting and drawing for 10 years. At the end of 2020 I got back to painting, but started with acrylics. I thought it would be cheaper and more practical, since I was not sure where my skills were at that point. I struggled a lot at the beginning because I was used to oils. Now that I am more confident in my skills, I got back to oils, that is my passion and favorite medium. But man, now it seems I never painted with oils and don't know what I'm doing. Your problem sounds similar to mine... I'm trying to start painting after 12 years - and I wasn't so good when I stopped. I think it MAY be because I remember what I was able to do (the work is on my walls) but I can't do it now. :( I guess the only solution is to do more painting. Good luck with your journey :)
There is a medium called Retarder and it slows down the acrylic paint and it's on from there. I would definitely love to paint with oils though I am good at acrylics.
In the part where you're at Michael's, you're pointing at Winsor Newton Galeria acrylics, which are actually student grade acrylics. W&N has a professional line of acrylics which is much more expensive compared to the student grade (not a 100% if it's still cheaper than oil paint)...anyway, if you experienced dull colors with the Galeria paints, then it's probably because they're not professional grade. Also, how did you get fired from your wine and paint job? I'm curious now.
Acrylics just takes a lot of layering, but you can mitigate the stress of blending by using the technique of glazing, which works with a lot of colors that are already transparent. You can use a glazing medium or even just water or even a retardant medium since using a lot of it can make a color transparent. I was frustrated with acrylics myself before discovering glazing, and now I found layering to be therapeutic.
I started acrylics after decades of oils because of health issues. I dislike acrylics. I can't blend like I used to. I like muted, dreamy colors which I'm finding hard to achieve. I didn't like water fixable oils either. I found buying expensive acrylics helps a lot. There is a real big difference. No I can't get the blending I want but the paints are smoother and I get the "feel" of oils.
I've been trying to paint with oils but either it is too thick and a mess or my thin layers feel like they are very dry and impossible to blend. Can't tell if it's a paint quality problem, a diluent problem or if i'm just bad lol As always, loved the video, i won't give up !
don't give up.. I'm still trying to get the hang of it too... once I squeeze out the paint.. I like to use my palette knife to mix the paint a little more because sometimes the oil separates in the tube.. and getting a feel for the consistency.. thick or thin seems to be the key for me
I tried acrylics once a while back and was always frustrated with the slower drying time. I thought, “boy if only the paint would stay wet and I could mix it while on the canvas.” I feel like such a process would be more natural. I’m excited to try oils.
you should learn about open acrylics, those are slow drying acrylics but not painfully slow like oils. The main difference is that open acrilics has less body, but you can use gels and paste too.
You do know that there are also heavy body acrylics? They lay down just like oils and if I need to go any thicker (very rare) then I just add impasto medium.

I use acrylics in preference to oils and have none of the problems listed in the vid. Maybe the guy needs to use them more before telling people about his 'problems' with them? 6:28 See that miserable 'purple' there? That's because he's not using the true primaries and the red he's using has too much yellow in it. For proper vivid colours then use the proper primaries and see the difference - Cyan, Magenta, Process (or Lemon) Yellow.
I started painting 3 years ago and I chose acrylics because I only needed water, brushes and paint and I could practice anywhere from canvas to wood or cardboard. I started portraits one year ago and I whatch your videos a lot because the rules are the same. As a beginner I make a lot of mistakes so I just wait it to dry and paint on top. So I'm still scared about trying oils, since I need to be constantly fixing mistakes I think I would en up whith a mess...
This was interesting. But, I've been painting with acrylics since I was 9 ears old in 1970. I've learned how to blend and work with acrylics and have improved over the years. I think about trying oils again once awhile. I did once when I was 16. But, I enjoy acrylics. I've learned a lot watching Paint and Travel with Roger Bansemer on PBS on TV. He works in oils sometimes. But, mostly in acrylics.
Agree with everything, but the price and that oils are easy. I’m a complete beginner. So started with acrylics, and as I use a wet box my acrylics stay wet for a week. So a tube lasts me for a very long time. Tried oil paint yesterday and today and was shocked to see how quickly the paint disappears. Need to see more of your videos as I completely failed to put a different colour on the wet oil paint. They just mix together. There is absolutely no chance for me to paint a cat’s whiskers in white while the painting is still wet. Same with your still life videos. I cannot put white paint on a red apple to show light reflection. It becomes pink straight away. Oils are not easy at all!

I’m new at painting. I accidentally bought oil paint instead of acrylic paint. Wondered why it was as thick as cement! Finally realized what I did but now lots of questions. I bought lined seed oil to thin the oil and help it flow. Do I need paint thinner to go from color to color? Do I have to have paint thinner? Also something special to clean the brushes. I don’t want to invest in oils right now. You do a great video! I really enjoyed it and will check out your others! Thanks
I think.. not only think.. I believe that acrylic colour creats more darkness and sharpness in painting which make the painting attractive. BUT oil colour creats realistic painting .

I use a medium to make the acrylic flow better but for some reason it doesn't fix the transparency issue. I think I just need to load more paint.

Hi there, the hardest thing I find is working wet on wet and picking up colour underneath when trying to apply paint on top. So for example, if I'm trying to lay down and midtown on top of something dark and the dark paint underneath is blending in with the colour I'm trying to apply.
I'm wondering if this happens because maybe I'm using solvent in order to make the paint more fluid? Sometimes the canvas feels as if it's a bit slippy. Do you have any Videos that address this Chris? I really want to be able to lay down colour in the way that you suggest in a blocky way, but I can't stop it from becoming far more mixed in smoothed out and blended.
I like using Liquin mediums, because it'll speed up painting about 50% faster than normal. Which, for oil painting, tends to be 1-3 days anyway, so that allows manipulation of colors for the sake of blending.
How do you "remove" paint you don't want? Do you just take a clean rag and just physically remove a section of the paint from the canvas, then go back in with the correct paint?
what does solvent free gel do? does it work the same as paint thinner or something?
The best match for me is. Do the base in acrylics since they are fast and cheap. Then over the acrylics pain in oils for the detaisl where the long dry time is important.

I have to put down more paint over the dried paint to blend over it. It works beautifully but is stressful and limited.
I painted when I attended art and graphic HS, we used oil paints and other students always thought it was the most difficult technique only reserved for old masters, but to me things like watercolors is the most difficult, oil is just expensive but really easy

Thanks Chris. I always used oils to paint. But I stopped painting and drawing for 10 years.
At the end of 2020 I got back to painting, but started with acrylics. I thought it would be cheaper and more practical, since I was not sure where my skills were at that point.
I struggled a lot at the beginning because I was used to oils.
Now that I am more confident in my skills, I got back to oils, that is my passion and favorite medium. But man, now it seems I never painted with oils and don't know what I'm doing. Didn't get the hang of it quite yet.

Your problem sounds similar to mine... I'm trying to start painting after 12 years - and I wasn't so good when I stopped.
I think it MAY be because I remember what I was able to do (the work is on my walls) but I can't do it now. :(
I guess the only solution is to do more painting.

There is a medium called Retarder and it slows down the acrylic paint and it's on from there. I would definitely love to paint with oils though I am good at acrylics.
In the part where you're at Michael's, you're pointing at Winsor Newton Galeria acrylics, which are actually student grade acrylics. W&N has a professional line of acrylics which is much more expensive compared to the student grade (not a 100% if it's still cheaper than oil paint)...anyway, if you experienced dull colors with the Galeria paints, then it's probably because they're not professional grade. Also, how did you get fired from your wine and paint job? I'm curious now.

If you mix acrylic colors use glycerine to make the medium more viscous and blendable with your grayscale.

Acrylics just takes a lot of layering, but you can mitigate the stress of blending by using the technique of glazing, which works with a lot of colors that are already transparent. You can use a glazing medium or even just water or even a retardant medium since using a lot of it can make a color transparent. I was frustrated with acrylics myself before discovering glazing, and now I found layering to be therapeutic.

I started acrylics after decades of oils because of health issues. I dislike acrylics. I can't blend like I used to. I like muted, dreamy colors which I'm finding hard to achieve. I didn't like water fixable oils either. I found buying expensive acrylics helps a lot. There is a real big difference. No I can't get the blending I want but the paints are smoother and I get the "feel" of oils.

I've been trying to paint with oils but either it is too thick and a mess or my thin layers feel like they are very dry and impossible to blend. Can't tell if it's a paint quality problem, a diluent problem or if i'm just bad lol

don't give up.. I'm still trying to get the hang of it too... once I squeeze out the paint.. I like to use my palette knife to mix the paint a little more because sometimes the oil separates in the tube.. and getting a feel for the consistency.. thick or thin seems to be the key for me
I tried acrylics once a while back and was always frustrated with the slower drying time. I thought, “boy if only the paint would stay wet and I could mix it while on the canvas.” I feel like such a process would be more natural. I’m excited to try oils.
What brand of acrylic paints do you use?
you should learn about open acrylics, those are slow drying acrylics but not painfully slow like oils. The main difference is that open acrilics has less body, but you can use gels and paste too.

I think acrylics take a lot more paint to build up and time which kinda balances out with the longer dry times in oil.
You do know that there are also heavy body acrylics? They lay down just like oils and if I need to go any thicker (very rare) then I just add impasto medium.

I use acrylics in preference to oils and have none of the problems listed in the vid. Maybe the guy needs to use them more before telling people about his 'problems' with them? 6:28 See that miserable 'purple' there? That's because he's not using the true primaries and the red he's using has too much yellow in it. For proper vivid colours then use the proper primaries and see the difference - Cyan, Magenta, Process (or Lemon) Yellow.
I started painting 3 years ago and I chose acrylics because I only needed water, brushes and paint and I could practice anywhere from canvas to wood or cardboard. I started portraits one year ago and I whatch your videos a lot because the rules are the same. As a beginner I make a lot of mistakes so I just wait it to dry and paint on top. So I'm still scared about trying oils, since I need to be constantly fixing mistakes I think I would en up whith a mess...
This was interesting. But, I've been painting with acrylics since I was 9 ears old in 1970. I've learned how to blend and work with acrylics and have improved over the years. I think about trying oils again once awhile. I did once when I was 16. But, I enjoy acrylics. I've learned a lot watching Paint and Travel with Roger Bansemer on PBS on TV. He works in oils sometimes. But, mostly in acrylics.
Agree with everything, but the price and that oils are easy. I’m a complete beginner. So started with acrylics, and as I use a wet box my acrylics stay wet for a week. So a tube lasts me for a very long time. Tried oil paint yesterday and today and was shocked to see how quickly the paint disappears. Need to see more of your videos as I completely failed to put a different colour on the wet oil paint. They just mix together. There is absolutely no chance for me to paint a cat’s whiskers in white while the painting is still wet. Same with your still life videos. I cannot put white paint on a red apple to show light reflection. It becomes pink straight away. Oils are not easy at all!

I’m new at painting. I accidentally bought oil paint instead of acrylic paint. Wondered why it was as thick as cement! Finally realized what I did but now lots of questions. I bought lined seed oil to thin the oil and help it flow. Do I need paint thinner to go from color to color? Do I have to have paint thinner? Also something special to clean the brushes. I don’t want to invest in oils right now. You do a great video! I really enjoyed it and will check out your others! Thanks

I think.. not only think.. I believe that acrylic colour creats more darkness and sharpness in painting which make the painting attractive. BUT oil colour creats realistic painting .
I like oil. Acrylic is good for experts who get it right quickly
