wish the same is true for current desktop cases. We had 5.25 (and smaller ones) before but somehow it is now, and now I am cluttering with card reader, hdd dock and all kinds of dock. Along with so many things sticking out from usb ports..

As someone who custom builds their desk from scratch, I really like what you've done here. I think the coolest thing though was the cable raceway that you built in, probably the lowest tech thing you did there and I think one of the easiest to implement and best result features of that desk
I like it but I think it was a bit disingenuous to say that the cost for this was cheap. He's completely ignoring the fact that he has trained people in a nice shop with nice equipment doing this.
@@uchiaslaya7 Well.. yes to a extent. To design it. But to make it, i seams like most of the manufacture work was pretty simple. The CNC machine did pretty much all of the hard work. Even considering that, doing this at home with a hand router and a thinner plywood and a bit of drawing on it, should not be that hard. Even if you miss a bit, most of the routing is on the inside, and the one that is not, is on the under side. IF you miss by a few cm it will not be visible and it will not really effect strength. I kind of think with a few design changes, pretty much anyone could make one at home
With all the work that was put into the desk I can see a future line of LTT desks coming in the next 5-10 years (I would have guessed less but I know how long the screwdriver took to develop and how much of a perfectionist Linus is)

I've had the idea of placing the powerplay mat under a desk for years, but it has always seemed like such a daunting task to do it alone! I'm happy to see someone has finally done it!
You might be able to do this with a desk that has a front drawer. Just stuff the wires under there along with the charging mat. It allows for easy access if something breaks or if you want to add more items.

Yay for more furniture! Something related to my day job (Furniture designer). A couple options to make a cleaner look and less hassle install/maintenance would be to have a built up edge on 3 sides and then the bottom is held on with fasteners+inserts. The metal legs and even the monitor stand could be modified to accept a black plastic wire cover strip on the back side so that wire feed through is minimal. The Baltic Birch 5x5 is no longer readily available these days due to the Russian import bans (so if you are getting it don't rely on it long term). But the same methods can be applied to a pre-existing Ikea desk top and routering out 70-80% of it and adding a bottom cover.
Ikea desktops are not solid, they're mdf around the outside 6", with a cardboard honeycomb core. Just an FYI. I have a cut down ikea tabletop that I needed to reinforce - although my desk in the corner of my bedroom matches the rest of the malm set now. Would've been nice to have solid wood but I don't own a jointer/planer.

Nice setup, I'd maybe only point out one thing that grabbed my attention. The side mounted I/O is nice, but on almost all single cable headphones the cable attaches to the left ear cup. This way you'll have the cable draped across your lap, putting the jack connector on the other side might have been slightly better.
@@robi4567 I haven't even thought about that. They probobly just charge like $100/hour for machine time. I don't have a clue how much time it takes to rout that out kind of think it's no more than 1 hour. You can proboly do both sides at the same go prior to splitting it.
I’d love to see the full process of the desk build itself. Already inspired some idea for me to DIY and seeing the process more could give me insight on the process to save me trial and error. Even if it’s a floatplane exclusive, I’d check it out
Very cool build! The only thing I would change is to put the I/O port on the left side of the desk. Two reasons for this: 1. most people use the mouse with their right hand, thus leaving more room on the left side of the desk for accessories; 2. most headphones with only one cable have the cable attached to the left ear, so it would make more sense to have that side attached to the audio plug.
@@JLychar But the build already has an audio port. OP is saying that if you're already going to have an I/O the left side is a more optimal position. Wireless headphones don't really have any place in the discussion.

This is awesome. This could pretty much be a small business on its own. The difficulty of it is the bespoke nature due to the specific hardware. For desk rigidity, metal supports could be used.

The QI standard actually has a free-position variant of their charger with overlapping, hexagonal coils, where you can actually freely position the load on the surface. It's quite a few years old, and not a single implementation has ever surfaced. Without specialized ASICs it would also be very costly, although even the 8-layer PCB would already be either way.
@@gmaiI Just a surface with multiple coils, but no free-position afaik. Most current designs allow free position in one direction, by using three overlapping coils - which helps with better phone compatibility where the exact vertical position of the receiving coil is unknown. That's as far as current QI ASICs go.
The simplest solution is proboly having 4 resivers in the keyboard, then a number of transmitters in the table. Then have them in a position that when one lose contact the other turn on. Say if the one in the table is 1 unit apart the one in the keyboard is 1.5 units apart. And 1 unit would be exactly twice that of maximum distance in width. That way you can move the keyboard pretty much anywhere and it will still charge.

Sick build. Adding laser engraved icons marking the wireless charging points would be a nice quality of life addition that barely compromises the clean build.
Especially if you did the lazer etch then did a thin layer of clear epoxy into the etch to make it flush so cleaning is easy and then it doesnt compromise a single thing on the clean aesthetic 👌
I really love the solutions for the cable management :) That zig zag channel cover on the bottom of the desk is a thing of beauty - (aesthetically gorgeous, AND functional). And the monitor wiring through the stand into the desk is very nicely done; Simple, effective.
@@jaunedroite Currently, they have a few fixed ports on the side of the table. And as Linus said, switching these out isn't easy. Well, if they had Framework Expansion mount points, you could put in any expansion slot card you wanted without needing a screwdriver. ...but realistically, with "normal" USB + C, that shouldn't be much of a problem. A few of those expansion slots would still be neat^^
@@Garagantua Yes, I've seen that. I just don't think that you need to exchange I/O that often. At the point when USB C is outdated, you probably also want to replace the monitor and the peripherals with something more modern and need to rewire everything anyway. At with the tower next to it, you don't need to worry about replacing GPUs, SSDs etc, so it is as future proof as such as such a setup can be, I'd say.
To make it easier to make, I'd take inspiration from DIY perks Invisible PC with "sandwich" approach. It'd make assembly and service a bit easier. Just instead of aluminium, glass fibre sheets would have to be used to allow for EM waves to pass through. Also, instead of "umbilical cord", there could be just a couple of connectors on the stand, so there are no dangling cables when it's moved around
Protip for the wireless chu charging pad. It's exactly 2mm thick so if you can find some kind of fence foam or material you can cut the foam around the pad to put it under a large LTT mousepad. When i did mine i 3d printed slabs to go around it to remove the bump
The CLEANEST setup would be utilizing this neat trick you guys pulled off, BUT also building the PC INTO the desk. I'm still planning on attempting a desk build with the PC inside, this video definitely added some nice concepts to try and incorporate 😁
The mind, and memory is a crazy thing. Watching this, I kept having this twinge in the back of my head. Then it hit me. ALLLLLLLL the way back in middle school (close to 40 years ago), I had a woodshop teacher who essentially did this exact thing (without the tech, obviously), made with a pair of sandwiched 2" butcherblock sheets. It almost perfectly hid every cable for his phone (rotery) and electric typewriter. His had more hidden draws as he didn't have the power delivery needs, but the project was essentially the same. Very cool memory, so thank you for that. I remember that the classes helped put the entire thing together. Easy "A", and a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure he took that desk with him when he retired a few years later.
I like it! But I would have liked it even more to see the whole build itself on this desk! Others would too. Because this would have inspired me to make my own with some of my own twists to it too!
Absolutely love videos like this! Would you consider releasing more in depth videos (maybe on floatplane?) detailing the process more about how builds like this are done? It's be really cool to watch the whole process start to finish. Even without a CNC, I'm sure people with enough time can use routers or other tools to recreate something like this. 10/10 video, would love to see more content like this

@@alexanderr3258 How do you expect to do that on a commercial scale, though? It's going to require a significant investment in both materials and labour. You'd have to make sure all the fixtures are safe, up to code and apply for relevant licensing. "Costs are next to nothing" may be the case for a massive RUclips channel w/ major endorsements and sponsors that have huge budgets for videos, but their final product in this video was one desk. As for how much people would pay for a desk like this; I'd estimate {using USD$} maybe $500 on the low-end (for a desk which doesn't have the built-in wireless charging or any built-in power features. The high-end, top of the range with all the features would easily be well over $5000+ and potentially twice that if product quality is extremely high. It would 100% appeal to steamers & professional gamers in e-Sports. I'm going to put the materials you would need, along with the tools and skills in a separate comment in case you might be interested in seeing how much there is.

You mean just add the Framework modules? That's genius. That would be the cleanest option by far. You could 3D print a housing to go inside the desk to accept the modules, align the USB-C connectors. If you recessed it a bit you could make wooden or plastic veneers to cover all but the opening on the framework modules.
I love the RUclips rabbit hole of desk building and I agree that would be fantastic. Idk how much crossover there is between tech RUclips and carpentry RUclips but I’m down.
LLT and Blacktail Studio colab would be amazing, oh and expensive, but both would heavily benefit, legit, I don't know who has more to gain from them doing a colab.
I have envisioned this build for my home office for a few years, just haven’t had the initiative. Great to see the proof of concept performs unbelievably well!
It's decent but not perfect, I've implemented the same thing for my desk. All the qi transmitters I have tried don't really work well through anything more than 0.5" thickness (even though they are all advertised to work up to 30mm/1" thickness). I'm also not sure that simply putting 9 transmitters side by side would increase the charging radius if they are all on separate controllers - though I'm no electrical engineer. It was a ton of work but at the end I am very happy with the results given how jank of a mod this is. Probably never going back.
I would have made the right leg so it has a tower holder. I'm usually not a fan of them but I think in this case it would work really good for this desk. It would probably even help with the umbilical cord too
I respect your opinion, I used to be the same, but as a custom keyboard enthusiast the numpad is more trouble than it's worth IMO (in terms of what's available with vs without a numpad). However, arrow keys are a must-have.
As a gamer i hate the numpad, but when working i hate not having it. Solution, move it to the bloody left side instead, that way you can use the mouse And numpad at the same time. To make it even more fancy, make it breakaway/wireless and use magnets to attach it to the sdie of the keyboard.
You could probobly get away with using a 6mm plywood, glued channels and just route where ever the charging will be. That would cut down on routing like 90% and the table will be cheaper and lighter. What I think is 6mm playwood, then 20mm channels of.. well maybe plywood then 6mm plywood on the bottom side. Then just a $30 hand router and a stedy hand. Because you only would be routing 4 mm away it would probobly be quite quick.
I can do this at home without a CNC machine, just use 3 plates or if you want additional sturdiness 4 so you have 2 plates for the channels and 2 plates as bottom/top plate. I've been planning on making my own desk with some metal (welding) elements for the edges and a glass top, may be nice to incorporate some of these idea's as well (If I ever do I'll try to remember sharing it at the LTT forums for others to learn from the mistakes I make and possibly improve upon the design and execution)
The issue is that you really can't get any thinner than 6mm in large sheets. I found some 3mm at 300x900 sheets. Of cause. If the charging go through a 6mm playwood, that would be perfect. Its cheap, sturdy and easy to work wirh. Just glue in loads of channels with stips of 20mm playwood between. Maybe a few screw inserts to make it possible to open it. But of cause. If you just have to mill away 2 or 3mm here and there wirh a 6mm playwood sheet. That would cut down on routing work quite a bit. I want to do a simular set up, but have the computer in the desk. Now I'm more and more leaning to a mobile-stationery set up. So the computer can just slide into the side and conect to two USB-c
@@terjebe7317 those are to flimsy. I did a search prior and found them down to 0.25mm. But you would probobly need something like 3 or 4 layer ply and those that are 2mm is not sold on that size. So .. well you basically need at least 4.. the you can just as well go for the cheaper 6 and route it down.
This is really impressive work, and you are totally right: Someone should create a product line for them. Only problem: Not very much freedom on the hardware it would work with.
I think the freedom could be there if they just figured out how to make cable routing and management easier. Perhaps a built-in VESA mount for the monitor and the top of the desk could be removed for getting at channels directly? But also yeah, the keyboard/mouse would have to be sold with it, but Logitech has several options for Powerplay. Could be a partnership!

This is the best one yet! I have a hard time looking past the flex around the PowerPlay mat. I think it'd be cool to recreate this project using proper hardwood like the butcher block for some extra rigidity. Obviously, that means more weight and a harder time CNC-ing, but no matter what there's gonna be compromise somewhere.
Not sure why you would need to 'look past' it as you aren't going to notice it unless you are doing CPR on that specific spot. And butcher block would likely be a terrible choice as thinning out sections of that means being left with slim glued together strips that may not hold at all.
Respect, that's really cool. Personally I avoid the stray, unused charging cables by using a wired mouse and keyboard, because I really don't care about 2 cables across my desk. I'm also surprised they didn't use a bigger desk pad but that's pretty trivial tbf

You got it straight, no one needs this of course, like man up and cable-manage. However, for those obsessed with no-cables, this really is the epitome, now if only I can get a CNC router….
For the "rest of us" adapters and cables can be mounted on the bottom side of the desk "only visible from below". You could also do without a router by making a wood frame+grid with a thin plywood top (and optional bottom) with sturdiness/weight balanced through grid density. With laptop+dock I'm considering mounting the docking station upside down under the desk - inside would be cool but too difficult to replace. Cudos for fun practical project and would like more "builders insights" from the staff doing most of the work 😊
a router isnt that expensive and could make it way easier. the expensive part comes with it being a cnc router. but a band saw or jigsaw could definitly make the "frame" for either a jig for a regular router or as you mentioned you could even make it out of a few hand saws if you a lot of time. it is the great part of tools theres only a handful of reasons to get the more Specialty/powered tools.
@@xathridtech727 I do have a handheld electric wood router (and built a 24 m2 green house in wood and glass) - but the amount of routing in Linus table design is... "beyond" - and as he mentions, makes the table lighter too.
You just gave me an idea where if you were ok with 3-4 inches of thickness you could use 1/2 plywood and make like a multilayer cable management sandwich lol I'm not gonna lie I'd sacrifice some cleanliness for the sake of power/IO on the desk surface at the very back of the desktop surface.
@@killershark90 they make those 3/4 inch(don't quote me on size) pop up ports for old cable management holes. You could pretty easily add 2 of them while keeping the clean ascetic... Ok so I know my new table top only issues being that frame shape. Time to get into CAD make a few tileable designs so I can have as much real state and as few cords
@@killershark90 That's actually not a terrible idea. Would work decently well and if you didn't use glue but some strategically placed wood dowels you'd have something that could be taken apart with relative ease for maintenance and upgrading.
Cool project! Some companies do "smart tables" by embedding stuff into them but i dunno if they go this far. With some metal profiles reinforcement and proper frame you wouldnt give up rigidity either (and probably could bolt monitor stand to the frame, making it even cleaner. As for pricing, hand-building those is not cheap, especially welding of the frames.
Awesome idea! Would actually be quite possible to replicate. There really is no need for a cnc router. Just a standard hand router would do well. Just set the depthstop correct once and you should be fine. Considering it's the underside it doesn't need to be perfectly cut, it won't be seen. The only important dimension is the depth.
I love it when youtubers get a cnc machine and think everything they make with it is impossible to replicate without one. Especially when they're just using sheets of plywood. You could make one of these with just a jig saw and some glue, or even a hand saw if you really wanted to.
@@twinversbr Yeah, but most of what they did here didn't need to be all that precise, they just needed a space to put the qi chargers and a cable management slot (which doesn't really need to be the zig zag pattern they used if you wanted to keep it simpler). If you want the drawer (which to be honest seems like the worst part of this setup) you could easily do that with a hand router too
I feel like this desk is fairly doable for anyone with a router and a drill. Even if the bottom looks sloppy, it's fine. Not like some of your other projects which are so unpractical.

Walmart sells a tool brand that is decent for small projects like this (hart) - a $100 router & the proper bits would get the job done - you don't need the full blown wood router machine they have if you want to replicate the project multiple times to sell the desks I would suggest investing little more & go with Milwaukee or something similar. A simple circular saw would do all the cutting you need but isn't necessary since you could just have them cut the pieces for you at hone depot or similar supplier
It may not be feasible to duplicate offhand, but there are definitely some inspirations that can be taken away. For example, I like that cable channel design - I'd kill to get a plastic version of one to stick on the bottom of my desk. You've also got me thinking about a well-defined umbilical again. On the other hand, are monitor speakers good enough to do this?
Sounds like the intent is to use headphones, but for when you don't want to use headphones, I think you nailed the main missing element of the design: Speakers.
You don't necessarily need a $30,000 CNC router to do this, a $100 plunge router would do just fine, just have to make sure you do your layout right, clamp some straight edges, etc. 2mm is also *really* thin for a desk surface, to the point that you'll crack it if not outright smash it if you bang your first hard or drop something over like 2lbs onto it. 4mm is still really thin, but probably strong enough to resist any reasonable strike. Depending on the grade of plywood you went with, and not counting the chargers, this is probably a $250 build, legs, glue, and a box of screws included. High-ply marine plywood would bump it up.
The current you need for charging the mouse is probably very small. So making the distance a tad larger will probably work. But the problem is really that you need to CNC in the first place. I use USB with a magnet connector on my mouse and keyboard. Just need to charge (connect) them monthly or so. For me it is a better tradeoff than having a razor-thin desk.
Not only is that setup incredibly clean, the editing during the opening is nutty as well! As an owner of a very messy desk with more wires than I would like, this is like another world to me. It's very slick. Personally I'm not too fond of qi charging, but it is the way to go if you want to purge all cables.
Very cool! Would be cool if you could program the mouse and keyboard to cycle between 30 and 80%. To not ruin the battery by keeping it fully charged all the time.
Maybe not so important for a gaming application, but for a work context, the inclusion of a standing desk motor would have been great (and you get to hide things in the standing desk structure) .
Now imagine in one of the hallowed out areas of the desk you stick a desktop replacement or workstation laptop motherboard, have a slide out mesh to pull out for cleaning once every few months and port extensions on the side of the desk and you don't even need a desktop power on the side of the desk. (They can made a concave outlet on each side of the heatsink exhaust to push air away from the underside intake. This would be an awesome setup for Framework 13 or 16 inch motherboard upgrade.)
That's pretty impressive. Personally I will never be someone obsessed with cable cleanliness but I can see the appeal and this is about as clean as I've ever seen on RUclips.
Question: If your mouse and keyboard are ALWAYS charging? Wouldn't that effect the battery life of said devices? Or can you temporarily turn off the charging option of the desk?
If you could somehow get IKEA to make a variant of this out of their Lagkapten tabletops I'd be all over that. Already quite the tabletop that can adapt on many things, imagine it being able to do THIS for a desktop setup.
I think Lagkapten is made out of essentially cardboard, covered with thin plastic veneer - which means it needs all its thickness to be structurally sound. Adding cable channels to it means it would need serious reinforcement and a thicker top covering of a different material - so essentially a complete redesign from scratch. At best they might get away with pulling a few cables through the desk for a side I/O or maybe (with a *big maybe*) embedding a few QI coils inside the desk - though here the heat would be a fire hazard.

It's a beautifull setup. It would be great to have an experiment about the power consumtion with this setup compare to a wired one. To see if the difference is really siginificative between inductive charging and wire charging.
Funny, I was looking into doing something like this last month. For the desk I wanted to just wrap the entire thing to completely do away with mouse pads. wish the same is true for current desktop cases. We had 5.25 (and smaller ones) before but somehow it is now, and now I am cluttering with card reader, hdd dock and all kinds of dock. Along with so many things sticking out from usb ports..

As someone who custom builds their desk from scratch, I really like what you've done here. I think the coolest thing though was the cable raceway that you built in, probably the lowest tech thing you did there and I think one of the easiest to implement and best result features of that desk

I like it but I think it was a bit disingenuous to say that the cost for this was cheap. He's completely ignoring the fact that he has trained people in a nice shop with nice equipment doing this.
@@uchiaslaya7 Well.. yes to a extent. To design it. But to make it, i seams like most of the manufacture work was pretty simple. The CNC machine did pretty much all of the hard work.
Even considering that, doing this at home with a hand router and a thinner plywood and a bit of drawing on it, should not be that hard.
Even if you miss a bit, most of the routing is on the inside, and the one that is not, is on the under side. IF you miss by a few cm it will not be visible and it will not really effect strength.
I kind of think with a few design changes, pretty much anyone could make one at home
With all the work that was put into the desk I can see a future line of LTT desks coming in the next 5-10 years (I would have guessed less but I know how long the screwdriver took to develop and how much of a perfectionist Linus is)

I've had the idea of placing the powerplay mat under a desk for years, but it has always seemed like such a daunting task to do it alone! I'm happy to see someone has finally done it!
You might be able to do this with a desk that has a front drawer. Just stuff the wires under there along with the charging mat. It allows for easy access if something breaks or if you want to add more items.

Yay for more furniture! Something related to my day job (Furniture designer). A couple options to make a cleaner look and less hassle install/maintenance would be to have a built up edge on 3 sides and then the bottom is held on with fasteners+inserts. The metal legs and even the monitor stand could be modified to accept a black plastic wire cover strip on the back side so that wire feed through is minimal. The Baltic Birch 5x5 is no longer readily available these days due to the Russian import bans (so if you are getting it don't rely on it long term). But the same methods can be applied to a pre-existing Ikea desk top and routering out 70-80% of it and adding a bottom cover.
Ikea desktops are not solid, they're mdf around the outside 6", with a cardboard honeycomb core. Just an FYI. I have a cut down ikea tabletop that I needed to reinforce - although my desk in the corner of my bedroom matches the rest of the malm set now. Would've been nice to have solid wood but I don't own a jointer/planer.

Nice setup, I'd maybe only point out one thing that grabbed my attention. The side mounted I/O is nice, but on almost all single cable headphones the cable attaches to the left ear cup. This way you'll have the cable draped across your lap, putting the jack connector on the other side might have been slightly better.
Probably a box that has mounting positions.
If I was going for a seamless look like this, that would be wireless as well and the headphone/mic jack would be more likely for a mic.

Very cool build! The only thing I would change is to put the I/O port on the left side of the desk. Two reasons for this: 1. most people use the mouse with their right hand, thus leaving more room on the left side of the desk for accessories; 2. most headphones with only one cable have the cable attached to the left ear, so it would make more sense to have that side attached to the audio plug.
I have put a USB port with hot glue under the desk on my left side for that exact reason. I am very far from "no clutter" though.
But most right handed people will go to the right to plug things in, so there is a trade off

This is awesome. This could pretty much be a small business on its own. The difficulty of it is the bespoke nature due to the specific hardware. For desk rigidity, metal supports could be used.

The QI standard actually has a free-position variant of their charger with overlapping, hexagonal coils, where you can actually freely position the load on the surface. It's quite a few years old, and not a single implementation has ever surfaced. Without specialized ASICs it would also be very costly, although even the 8-layer PCB would already be either way.

@@gmaiI Just a surface with multiple coils, but no free-position afaik. Most current designs allow free position in one direction, by using three overlapping coils - which helps with better phone compatibility where the exact vertical position of the receiving coil is unknown. That's as far as current QI ASICs go.

The simplest solution is proboly having 4 resivers in the keyboard, then a number of transmitters in the table. Then have them in a position that when one lose contact the other turn on.
Say if the one in the table is 1 unit apart the one in the keyboard is 1.5 units apart. And 1 unit would be exactly twice that of maximum distance in width.
That way you can move the keyboard pretty much anywhere and it will still charge.

Well, if they had Framework Expansion mount points, you could put in any expansion slot card you wanted without needing a screwdriver.
...but realistically, with "normal" USB + C, that shouldn't be much of a problem. A few of those expansion slots would still be neat^^

@@Garagantua Yes, I've seen that. I just don't think that you need to exchange I/O that often. At the point when USB C is outdated, you probably also want to replace the monitor and the peripherals with something more modern and need to rewire everything anyway. At with the tower next to it, you don't need to worry about replacing GPUs, SSDs etc, so it is as future proof as such as such a setup can be, I'd say.
To make it easier to make, I'd take inspiration from DIY perks Invisible PC with "sandwich" approach. It'd make assembly and service a bit easier. Just instead of aluminium, glass fibre sheets would have to be used to allow for EM waves to pass through.
Also, instead of "umbilical cord", there could be just a couple of connectors on the stand, so there are no dangling cables when it's moved around

Protip for the wireless chu charging pad. It's exactly 2mm thick so if you can find some kind of fence foam or material you can cut the foam around the pad to put it under a large LTT mousepad. When i did mine i 3d printed slabs to go around it to remove the bump

The mind, and memory is a crazy thing. Watching this, I kept having this twinge in the back of my head. Then it hit me. ALLLLLLLL the way back in middle school (close to 40 years ago), I had a woodshop teacher who essentially did this exact thing (without the tech, obviously), made with a pair of sandwiched 2" butcherblock sheets. It almost perfectly hid every cable for his phone (rotery) and electric typewriter. His had more hidden draws as he didn't have the power delivery needs, but the project was essentially the same. Very cool memory, so thank you for that. I remember that the classes helped put the entire thing together. Easy "A", and a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure he took that desk with him when he retired a few years later.

@@alexanderr3258 How do you expect to do that on a commercial scale, though? It's going to require a significant investment in both materials and labour. You'd have to make sure all the fixtures are safe, up to code and apply for relevant licensing.
"Costs are next to nothing" may be the case for a massive RUclips channel w/ major endorsements and sponsors that have huge budgets for videos, but their final product in this video was one desk.
As for how much people would pay for a desk like this; I'd estimate {using USD$} maybe $500 on the low-end (for a desk which doesn't have the built-in wireless charging or any built-in power features. The high-end, top of the range with all the features would easily be well over $5000+ and potentially twice that if product quality is extremely high. It would 100% appeal to steamers & professional gamers in e-Sports.

For the side IO port, just apply Framework's approach: Pure USB-C and some adapter with some mechanism to be able to easily swap out
You mean just add the Framework modules? That's genius. That would be the cleanest option by far. You could 3D print a housing to go inside the desk to accept the modules, align the USB-C connectors. If you recessed it a bit you could make wooden or plastic veneers to cover all but the opening on the framework modules.

I have envisioned this build for my home office for a few years, just haven’t had the initiative. Great to see the proof of concept performs unbelievably well!
It's decent but not perfect, I've implemented the same thing for my desk. All the qi transmitters I have tried don't really work well through anything more than 0.5" thickness (even though they are all advertised to work up to 30mm/1" thickness). I'm also not sure that simply putting 9 transmitters side by side would increase the charging radius if they are all on separate controllers - though I'm no electrical engineer.
It was a ton of work but at the end I am very happy with the results given how jank of a mod this is. Probably never going back.
I would have made the right leg so it has a tower holder. I'm usually not a fan of them but I think in this case it would work really good for this desk. It would probably even help with the umbilical cord too

I respect your opinion, I used to be the same, but as a custom keyboard enthusiast the numpad is more trouble than it's worth IMO (in terms of what's available with vs without a numpad). However, arrow keys are a must-have.

As a gamer i hate the numpad, but when working i hate not having it.
Solution, move it to the bloody left side instead, that way you can use the mouse And numpad at the same time.
To make it even more fancy, make it breakaway/wireless and use magnets to attach it to the sdie of the keyboard.

You could probobly get away with using a 6mm plywood, glued channels and just route where ever the charging will be. That would cut down on routing like 90% and the table will be cheaper and lighter.
What I think is 6mm playwood, then 20mm channels of.. well maybe plywood then 6mm plywood on the bottom side.
Then just a $30 hand router and a stedy hand.
Because you only would be routing 4 mm away it would probobly be quite quick.
I can do this at home without a CNC machine, just use 3 plates or if you want additional sturdiness 4 so you have 2 plates for the channels and 2 plates as bottom/top plate.
I've been planning on making my own desk with some metal (welding) elements for the edges and a glass top, may be nice to incorporate some of these idea's as well (If I ever do I'll try to remember sharing it at the LTT forums for others to learn from the mistakes I make and possibly improve upon the design and execution)
Having a glass setup that allowed you to see the inner workings could be pretty cyber-punk too.
The issue is that you really can't get any thinner than 6mm in large sheets. I found some 3mm at 300x900 sheets.
Of cause. If the charging go through a 6mm playwood, that would be perfect. Its cheap, sturdy and easy to work wirh.
Just glue in loads of channels with stips of 20mm playwood between. Maybe a few screw inserts to make it possible to open it.
But of cause. If you just have to mill away 2 or 3mm here and there wirh a 6mm playwood sheet. That would cut down on routing work quite a bit.
I want to do a simular set up, but have the computer in the desk. Now I'm more and more leaning to a mobile-stationery set up. So the computer can just slide into the side and conect to two USB-c
@@matsv201 You can easily get sheets of veneer down to 1 mm or less.

But you would probobly need something like 3 or 4 layer ply and those that are 2mm is not sold on that size. So .. well you basically need at least 4.. the you can just as well go for the cheaper 6 and route it down.

This is really impressive work, and you are totally right: Someone should create a product line for them. Only problem: Not very much freedom on the hardware it would work with.

I think the freedom could be there if they just figured out how to make cable routing and management easier. Perhaps a built-in VESA mount for the monitor and the top of the desk could be removed for getting at channels directly? But also yeah, the keyboard/mouse would have to be sold with it, but Logitech has several options for Powerplay. Could be a partnership!
Another thing you could do is make the top easily detachable so you can access the inner cabling if something ever broke on it

You can also add hinges at the back of the desk so that it can be opened up like a laptop to replace/repair stuffs inside.
My setup is so clean that there is nothing on my table, I just sit there staring at the wall

This is the best one yet! I have a hard time looking past the flex around the PowerPlay mat. I think it'd be cool to recreate this project using proper hardwood like the butcher block for some extra rigidity. Obviously, that means more weight and a harder time CNC-ing, but no matter what there's gonna be compromise somewhere.
Not sure why you would need to 'look past' it as you aren't going to notice it unless you are doing CPR on that specific spot. And butcher block would likely be a terrible choice as thinning out sections of that means being left with slim glued together strips that may not hold at all.
Respect, that's really cool. Personally I avoid the stray, unused charging cables by using a wired mouse and keyboard, because I really don't care about 2 cables across my desk. I'm also surprised they didn't use a bigger desk pad but that's pretty trivial tbf

For the "rest of us" adapters and cables can be mounted on the bottom side of the desk "only visible from below".
You could also do without a router by making a wood frame+grid with a thin plywood top (and optional bottom) with sturdiness/weight balanced through grid density.
With laptop+dock I'm considering mounting the docking station upside down under the desk - inside would be cool but too difficult to replace.

a router isnt that expensive and could make it way easier. the expensive part comes with it being a cnc router. but a band saw or jigsaw could definitly make the "frame" for either a jig for a regular router or as you mentioned you could even make it out of a few hand saws if you a lot of time. it is the great part of tools theres only a handful of reasons to get the more Specialty/powered tools.
@@xathridtech727 I do have a handheld electric wood router (and built a 24 m2 green house in wood and glass) - but the amount of routing in Linus table design is... "beyond" - and as he mentions, makes the table lighter too.
You just gave me an idea where if you were ok with 3-4 inches of thickness you could use 1/2 plywood and make like a multilayer cable management sandwich lol I'm not gonna lie I'd sacrifice some cleanliness for the sake of power/IO on the desk surface at the very back of the desktop surface.
@@killershark90 they make those 3/4 inch(don't quote me on size) pop up ports for old cable management holes. You could pretty easily add 2 of them while keeping the clean ascetic... Ok so I know my new table top only issues being that frame shape. Time to get into CAD make a few tileable designs so I can have as much real state and as few cords
@@killershark90 That's actually not a terrible idea. Would work decently well and if you didn't use glue but some strategically placed wood dowels you'd have something that could be taken apart with relative ease for maintenance and upgrading.
Cool project! Some companies do "smart tables" by embedding stuff into them but i dunno if they go this far. With some metal profiles reinforcement and proper frame you wouldnt give up rigidity either (and probably could bolt monitor stand to the frame, making it even cleaner.
As for pricing, hand-building those is not cheap, especially welding of the frames.
You should sell ready to go desk surfaces. Hollowed out and unfinished. I'd certainly buy one.

Would actually be quite possible to replicate. There really is no need for a cnc router. Just a standard hand router would do well. Just set the depthstop correct once and you should be fine. Considering it's the underside it doesn't need to be perfectly cut, it won't be seen. The only important dimension is the depth.
I love it when youtubers get a cnc machine and think everything they make with it is impossible to replicate without one. Especially when they're just using sheets of plywood. You could make one of these with just a jig saw and some glue, or even a hand saw if you really wanted to.

@@twinversbr Yeah, but most of what they did here didn't need to be all that precise, they just needed a space to put the qi chargers and a cable management slot (which doesn't really need to be the zig zag pattern they used if you wanted to keep it simpler). If you want the drawer (which to be honest seems like the worst part of this setup) you could easily do that with a hand router too
I feel like this desk is fairly doable for anyone with a router and a drill. Even if the bottom looks sloppy, it's fine. Not like some of your other projects which are so unpractical.
They do crazy experiential. Not consumers products. When they do it turns out like screwdriver, backpack or other merch.

It’s not impossible all you need is a skill saw a router and a drill.
Walmart sells a tool brand that is decent for small projects like this (hart) - a $100 router & the proper bits would get the job done - you don't need the full blown wood router machine they have
if you want to replicate the project multiple times to sell the desks I would suggest investing little more & go with Milwaukee or something similar.
A simple circular saw would do all the cutting you need but isn't necessary since you could just have them cut the pieces for you at hone depot or similar supplier
just use battery operated mouse and keyboard and change batteries once in 2 months.... :D no need for fancy charging gear and pads and drilled tables

It may not be feasible to duplicate offhand, but there are definitely some inspirations that can be taken away. For example, I like that cable channel design - I'd kill to get a plastic version of one to stick on the bottom of my desk. You've also got me thinking about a well-defined umbilical again. On the other hand, are monitor speakers good enough to do this?
Sounds like the intent is to use headphones, but for when you don't want to use headphones, I think you nailed the main missing element of the design: Speakers.

You don't necessarily need a $30,000 CNC router to do this, a $100 plunge router would do just fine, just have to make sure you do your layout right, clamp some straight edges, etc. 2mm is also *really* thin for a desk surface, to the point that you'll crack it if not outright smash it if you bang your first hard or drop something over like 2lbs onto it. 4mm is still really thin, but probably strong enough to resist any reasonable strike. Depending on the grade of plywood you went with, and not counting the chargers, this is probably a $250 build, legs, glue, and a box of screws included. High-ply marine plywood would bump it up.
The current you need for charging the mouse is probably very small. So making the distance a tad larger will probably work.
But the problem is really that you need to CNC in the first place. I use USB with a magnet connector on my mouse and keyboard. Just need to charge (connect) them monthly or so. For me it is a better tradeoff than having a razor-thin desk.

As an owner of a very messy desk with more wires than I would like, this is like another world to me. It's very slick. Personally I'm not too fond of qi charging, but it is the way to go if you want to purge all cables.

The Logitech charge pad actually already does this, but I'm not sure about their keyboard charging solution.

Maybe not so important for a gaming application, but for a work context, the inclusion of a standing desk motor would have been great (and you get to hide things in the standing desk structure) .
Now imagine in one of the hallowed out areas of the desk you stick a desktop replacement or workstation laptop motherboard, have a slide out mesh to pull out for cleaning once every few months and port extensions on the side of the desk and you don't even need a desktop power on the side of the desk. (They can made a concave outlet on each side of the heatsink exhaust to push air away from the underside intake. This would be an awesome setup for Framework 13 or 16 inch motherboard upgrade.)
That's pretty impressive. Personally I will never be someone obsessed with cable cleanliness but I can see the appeal and this is about as clean as I've ever seen on RUclips.
Question: If your mouse and keyboard are ALWAYS charging? Wouldn't that effect the battery life of said devices? Or can you temporarily turn off the charging option of the desk?

Already quite the tabletop that can adapt on many things, imagine it being able to do THIS for a desktop setup.
LAGKAPTEN needs some serious reinforcement on the surface. It's way too easily dented
I think Lagkapten is made out of essentially cardboard, covered with thin plastic veneer - which means it needs all its thickness to be structurally sound. Adding cable channels to it means it would need serious reinforcement and a thicker top covering of a different material - so essentially a complete redesign from scratch.
At best they might get away with pulling a few cables through the desk for a side I/O or maybe (with a *big maybe*) embedding a few QI coils inside the desk - though here the heat would be a fire hazard.
@@wojtek4p4 I get it wouldn't be as simple as "add channels," the channels would definitely need to be able to reinforce it some. But they're surprisingly sturdy in my experience.

Funny, I was looking into doing something like this last month. For the desk I wanted to just wrap the entire thing to completely do away with mouse pads. For the LG mouse, i was thinking to just buy a third party puck that converts the charging to QI standard. Can you share the parts used and the layout?
