My gosh….they are practically giving away food at your grocery store. I couldn’t even buy a can of those tomatoes for the whole of your daily budget here in San Francisco. I watched so many of Mr Shrimps videos and have the same reaction. Your grocery stores have such incredible bargains for those who put in the effort. There are no such bargains in my part of California.
Even when I see videos of people shopping in places such as Trader Joe's (which I believe is operated by Aldi?) I'm shocked at how much food can be somewhere like California
well let me put it this way, the US median salary is around 70k USD, In UK, the median salary is just shy of 35k USD, rent comes at about the same, although can vary depending on the place you live. as US, when you think it about it this way, the food prices (non reduced) is not very different compared to US. If you were to have a remote job, as an american living in UK, sure, your salary would go a long way, but from the perspective of a british national living, and earning their wages based on UK monthly income, expenses and such would amount to a great deal. Thats the key thing you need to remember when watching priced based sort of videos on youtube,
Think about it like this, If you were to move to say i dont know, africa, (non popular area) your US salary would make you live a queen lifestyle. but if you were to switch from a remote job, to a job based on the salary in Africa, you'd eventually be forced into having the same sort of lifestyle you used to have in US
@@valy673 In my country (Slovakia), the annual median salary is about 15 000 euros (1300 per month) and the food prices are terrible, for the price of 1,37 pounds which is about 1,5 euro I would be able to buy only the bread / only the can of tomatoes / only the salad.... And even if some item is reduced because of best by date, it is never a bargain like in this video, maybe like 30% off... And rent in capital is expensive as hell (700 euro for 60 square meter)... We are fucked...

Really interesting! The reduced price chicken was an amazing source of protein that would last for more than a day. Maybe making a stock from the bones and some of the left over veg/salad might have helped your evening meal but it does use extra energy to produce. I subscribe to Atomic Shrimp as well as you and enjoy watching both of you tackle these challenges. Thanks for posting, look forward to the next, whatever it may be! 👍👏👏👏👏
Stumbled across after watching Atomic Shrimps two £1.37. Love these types of video and its refreshing to see one without the obligatory tin if beans, onion, carrot and single mushroom 😅. Looking forward to more of these!
Well thanks for clicking on it! I have to say, if I could have squeezed in an onion or a tins of beans I probably would have aha... But always fun to try and do something different
I'm in the upper midwest of US. Looking at the prices of your reduced groceries makes me want to immediately move. A reduced, close to expiration raw chicken would still cost $6.00 here. A very small (less than 2lb) rotisserie chicken runs $4.99 at Wal-Mart, and they don't mark them down at the end of the day. Cheapest bread available is at Dollar tree and costs $1.25 - not reduced even if rock hard dry. Learning a lot from your videos.
Thanks for the comment! Interesting to read, usually I'd expect a rotisserie chicken to be slightly more than that, but if you're lucky enough to find a reduced, raw chicken it's usually around £2 I reckon! Bread, however, can be very cheap. I'd say if I'm really splashing out on the week's loaf then I'm spending about £1.50!!
I'm in Texas and a rotisserie chicken is about $7.99 now- raw whole chicken actually more expensive. A loaf bread is about $3.00-4.00. Whole-grain bread is much more expensive. I do realize that in the UK you pay a lot more for gas than we do, but man is your food cheap!@@harrywalbyoff2
@@emilyg1539Costco is still $4.99 for a rotisserie chicken and I believe Aldi has bread for 88 cents. If you got a HEB near you they often have some good prices on their meats when they are on sale.
Wow! you actually got super lucky with that haul! the vegetables with/without seasoning for 10p each is unreal, the 30p chicken is insane!! there's 3 meals in the chicken for sure. nice cuts for a roast or casserole, peel offs for curry, and boil the bones and tiny bits down for broth.
Yeah I was crazily lucky! I think I'll have to try again but no reduced items next time. Also I am a curry fan but I'll definitely give that dish a go, sounds great! Thank you
That would work out to $2.30 CAD. It would be literally impossible to get all of that here! Good work. I still love these videos even though it would be 3-5x the prices here. It’s still helpful for tight budgets. (The tomatoes and bread at peak sale price would be the entire budget ☠️)
Hope the chicken bones were boiled later for a stock. Could have taken the raw skin off, baked it for cracklings (aka chicharrones) for a crunchy element and it'd still give you the fat drippings. The two end slices of bread cooked in the oven or skillet may not have gotten as soggy as the inner slice.
You'll be glad to know that the chicken bones did eventually get used for stock, I like to freeze them until I have enough to make a batch, then freeze into ice cube trays! Using the ends may have been a good idea, but I think the big thing there was just that they needed to be cooked longer and slower. Also, I hadn't heard of the dish chicharrones before and it looks delicious so thanks for mentioning that :)
Thank you! It's definitely all about timing, certain supermarkets have some significant reductions towards then end of the week, but I was particularly this time
Hello there. A few observations, if I may. Firstly, are you ambidextrous? One minute you're left-handed, the next, you're right-handed. Secondly, I chuckled at the 'Mike hands' at various points 😄😄 Your right thumb seems to be sore. Do you pick at it nervously? I do the same thing. Anyway, a very good video 😃😃👍
I tend to favour different hands for different tasks without thinking much about it! And I do do that, a bad habit but one I'm trying to gradually stop. Thanks for the comment Philip :)
Atomic shrimp said something about the UK getting taxes from you else where but I don't think that's what's making grocery stores pretty cheap or maybe it is I'm a dum dum

I visit London regularly for work! I always always bring food with me from home because it's so much cheaper than buying anything there!! I've got a lot of friends who live there too and for a lot of them their local shops tend to be small convenience stores such as Tesco Express (unless they live quite far out), so they spend A LOT more on groceries than I do at home. Thank you for the comment :)

That is an incredible amount of food for the cost! Super fun menu!
Got really lucky this time! Thank you
I've watched all of the atomic shrimp budget challenges and he's never had bargains like this! This is a great video, thanks for posting!❤
I got ridiculously lucky in this one, I don't think I'll see a 30p chicken ever again in my life. Thank you for commenting, glad you enjoyed!! :)
Nice job!

Very clever meals.
Lucky you for getting the chicken 🍗 and salad 🥗 bag

yay what a surprise super excited to watch your video , have an amazing rest of the weekend :)

I might suggest chicken marengo for the peel offs if you don't like curry. pile up the rice and the sauce is tomato base and taragon.very nice.

Not long been a teenager myself, I've always loved these kind of vids aha, thanks for watching Zac!
I think you did well on that budget It will be interesting to see what you do with no reduced items .
Thank you! Hoping to have another go in a few weeks!
How are your channels not huge, the production quality in your videos is fantastic.
Aha wow, thank you!!
Wow you could eat for several days off this!
America doesn't do much reduce section stuff. We have reduced items mixed in, but they're rarely more than 50% off.

Great video. I love the prices you have. In California a loaf of bread cheapest brand is 1.50 so you did great 👍

Less than 1K subs?! Couldn't tell! How is this channel less than 1K?
Wow, you couldnt get reduced bread in Canada for less than $1
Wow that's crazy, sometimes you can get a baguette for 10p if you go late enough here!
As of now, 10 pence is 13 cents U. S. You can’t buy anything, clearanced or not, for 13 cents where I live.

30 P for a reduced whole chicken?
Yea food is cheap in UK.
I get happy when I can find it for 99 cents a pound here!
I think this was the only time I've ever seen one for under £1! Just so happened to be when I was shopping for a budget challenge
nice ideas but not really realistic as there would be very few occasions when people could actually source food at those prices.
When are you doing the next 1.37 budget no sale items but 2?
Soon I hope! I've been filming a big video that I need to edit and then I'd love to try another budget challenge

Am i getting this correctly? You got a whole chicken for .30? I don't think we can even get a slice of lunch meat for that price anymore.
