There are sequels that are hard to watch because they were made so much more cheaply, and then there are sequels that are hard to watch because they missed the point of the original so thoroughly it actually undermines it. The latter is so much worse and this is a good example of that, IMO.
My big problem with this whole set up is that Mulan being "against arranged marriage" is completely unnecessary. First, you set up that the princesses are having legitimate doubts about going through with this, but remain firm due to their country. Then, you can have Mulan conversing with the princesses and when bringing up her actions in the first movie, the whole "duty to your heart" mumbo jumbo, she inadvertently turns the princesses against their royal duties.
I honestly would rather have the lesson of follow common sense than with your heart. Make decisions that will create harmony with yourself, and people around you without having everyone be uncomfortable with them.
Actually, that IS Harvy Fierstein reprising his role of Yao in this movie, not a guy doing an impersonation. I checked the cast list.
"My duty is to my heart." This is why we have so many divorces, people.
I've only just noticed that Mulan tells Shang that he's loyal, but she wonders if he actually has a heart. Not to be cliche, but doesn't being loyal kinda come with having a heart? So Sequel!Mulan is a walking contradiction on top of being irresponsible. Way to botch a progressive female character, Disney.
The way mulan treats shang hurts to watch when he's clearly in the right
This movie ruined the character of Mulan for me...
Movie fix: Emperor needs soldiers to escort his daughters to an arranged marriage. No fate of China, none of that. This movie could be exactly the same. PROBLEM SOLVED
Do hunchback of notre dame 2, it's so bad!
This movie isn't just bad, it's also have extremely problematic moral: Love, and fuck everything else!
I just realized why they can't shut up about the whole "duty to my heart crap" even though that's not what Mulan learned in the previous movie. Because following hearts was what most of the Disney Princesses learned, and Mulan is a Disney Princess. So either Disney assumed all of the Disney Princesses have the same goals and/or motivation and they didn't know that Mulan was different, or they knew about that difference, and just put that "heart duty" stuff for the trailers.
I think the thing that pisses me off most about this sequel is its absolute butchering of Mulan and her motivations. 'Following her duty to her heart?' What fanfic did that crawl out of? She was following her duty to her family, potentially sacrificing herself in order to save her father from war.
If you and Doug Walker had watched this movie together i can only imagine how much noise would have been made from the two of you yelling at the TV. (He just recently did a Mulan 2 review for his Disneycember segment and boy did this movie drive him up a wall)

"HOORAY FOR WESTERN VALUES!" -this plot in a nutshell
To be fair, a lot of ancient civilizations didn't know what their ruler's children looked like, because they weren't allowed outside palace walls without all their regalia on because it was seen as disgraceful to go without any decoration. Add that to the fact that these girls weren't wearing anything too fancy, and that this mission was supposed to be a secret, and them not getting kidnapped at that village seems pretty plausible.
I have to give you a standing ovation for standing up for Shang who was actually the most unselfish and responsible out of all the characters in this film (between his bouts of falling out of character) They were trying to portray him as a rigid jerk but to a mature eye, just the opposite happened. That's why he is my fave Disney guy, strong, honorable, and responsible
I adore the first Mulan film
I have to agree with Shang at
