    I know the majority of the "love story" is kinda dull and cliche, but the moment where Quasi give Madeline the figure he made of her is really cute and soft and makes me wish that whole plot was filled with moments like that instead of beating us over the head with the message.

      Same. NGL I always wished Quasi became a carpenter or a toymaker and that’s how he makes an income while happily interacting with new people on a daily basis, building his confidence so he doesn’t feel ashamed of his looks. Did you know Madeline’s figurine looks exactly like Tinkerbell minus her wings 😂

    If Disney remake Hunchback in live action, it could be the masterpiece the original so nearly was - make the gargolyes imaginary, get an actor who can sing as well as Tony Jay to do Hellfire, make the movie explicitly about discrimination and acceptance.

Not to mention she acted more like a stereotype of a Gypsy because she has a crystal ball and tells Quasi to just tell Maddie how he feels. But yeah, Phoebus, Shang and especially John Smith were complete a**holes in their sequels. Dunno why Disney decided they needed to be sexist idiots

    You know what was even more agonizing then the movie itself? How Disney played the trailer for this movie on pretty much EVERY DVD and VHS they had put onto store shelves at the time. Like how on the DVD releases of "The Little Mermaid 2", "Lady and the Tramp 2", "Dinosaur", "102 Dalmatians", where they all just gave the same vauge release date of 2001, then on "The Emperor's New Groove" DVD, they gave an ACTUAL release date of August 28th, 2001, but that ended up being not being the case, until FINALLY Disney released it on March 19th, 2002, which was the same day that Disney released the first Hunchback film on DVD, I guess as a way to apologize for the abysmal quality of this sequel. The point is that this is the Disney sequel with the most amount of delays. It's first announced in 2000, but then finally gets off its disc based ass and releases to the public in 2002.

  • @strawberrysoulforever8336
    @strawberrysoulforever8336 3 года назад +5

    I'm really glad you got to this one. It is probably one of the most complimentary reviews I've seen of this movie (See Mr Enter and Musical Hell to see what I'm talking about), but it's a fair criticism from what I know (I have not finished the actual movie...I started and got bored). I can see a thousand fixes to make this movie better, but considering I loved the original movie (luckily I haven't read the book so I can't compare unfavourably despite knowing the basic plot), this one was never going to impress me. I do find the animation extremely ugly, but I have to blame that on the budget. The animators did what they could.
    I have proposed a midquel that would explain the gargoyles on comments in other videos involving Quasimodo sneaking out and after this movie, he'd be even more reluctant to defy Frollo again. There's a few reasons for this, but mainly because Frollo was one of the things that was so good about the first movie and even with the lowered budget, they got everyone else back so they could probably do that with him, as well. Sarousch is at least entertaining, but he's also another serious downgrade. Thank you for another entertaining review. I don't know what could be coming next or when, but I'll look forward to it.

  • @Sadiep16
    @Sadiep16 3 года назад +5

    Now seeing the review, I really liked it and worth the wait I think. You bring up excellent points and yes there were a lot of flaws in this one. I loved the whole conversation about how a jeweled bell actually wouldn't function/work. Also I never thought of that, but the rational for the awkward flitting between Madeline and Quasimodo makes a lot of sense and I hadn't thought it in that way before. But in particular with Quasi, even though he's now a part of society, he still might have the "mindset" of a younger man given how he was raised for twenty years with only Frollo for company. While not a fully developed character, I did enjoy Jennifer's performance as Madeline and I think with a stronger script she could have done really well.
    Th Phoebus subplot is, as you say, the most entertaining. If they wanted to do the circus being thieves subplot, I think if given more room could have been something. Like the main guy, cannot spell his name, might be a thief, but then have Phoebus talk to a few others who like Madeline are with the circus for their livelihoods and don't steal. That might be a complex for a 80 minute film, but give something. And I really wish Madeline's line "He's made a living of illusions, but I can out think him" really had more weight to it because I think it's a neat concept. We saw in the first movie how Esmerelda used basically parlor tricks (and I get she's a destressed mother), but why on earth would she have at least thought of the catacombs? Just a nitpick myself.
    I will be very curious (and hope) there is a commentary track with your version of a sequel. So I'll save my own thoughts for that video. Keep up the great work, Jesse. I am so glad your back doing videos :)

    The film is weak, but I still had a lot of fun with it and had good times with it, because Most Characters are ok, the Animation, even for 2002 is pathetic, but is nostalgic and this Movie has a good Ending.
    But you forgot to mention that 2 People carring an Elephant dosn't make sense and the other Henchmen only shown up at the Festieval.

      Eh, I don't really care if a pair of circus strong men are able to carry an elephant in this movie. Quasimodo is also inhumanly strong. Like I said, animation has a degree of separation from reality. Suspension of disbelief and all that. And I'd actually give the animation a pretty big pass in this movie. It's slightly drab, but I don't think it's bad at all, really. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    My biggest and only problem with Disney's original The Hunch of Notredame is the song A Guy Like You that The Gargoyles sing. The song is FUCKING POINTLESS because (1) Esmerelda doesn't love Quasimodo. She loves Phoebus and Phoebus reciprocates. (2) It just doesn't fit with the situation of Paris burning to the ground because of Frollo's obsessive lust over her. Therefore it gives the viewer serious mood whiplash. (3) It's just an AWFUL SONG in general and The WORST SINGER is the actor who voices Victor. Jason Alexander and Mary Jane Wicks are actually decent singers. Many people have issues with The Gargoyles But aside from their song which is FUCKING AWFUL I actually think that The Gargoyles are really good comic relief. TO BAD THE SEQUEL NERFS THEIR CHARACTERS AND MAKES THEM UNBEARABLE

    “I’m more or less convinced Tom Hulce could sing the ingredients off of a box of breakfast cereal and make it sound compelling and beautiful.”
    I certainly wouldn’t get that impression from this movie, personally. To me, he sounds uninvested in his performance, and there’s so many moments where he’s off key or his delivery sounds bizarrely choppy, which sucks because Out There was one of my favorite songs from the first movie.

    My twin brother Peter actually loves this GODAWFUL PIECE OF SHIT I CAN'T STAND IT. Because I hold the original film in really high regard. In my opinion The first film is a MASTERPIECE aside from the song A Guy Like You. And The Hunchback of Notredame II is just an AWFUL film and sequel. I love the first film because not only is it one of Disney's darkest children's films but it dared to be different by not having the main protagonist get the love interest. Yes it is VERY IMPORTANT to find romance and true love. But many people never find true love or even romance ever. By not having Esmerelda and Quasimoda hookup Disney was acknowleging the reality to children that some people thru no fault of their own will stay single for the rest of their lives Also by not having Quasimodo and Esmerelda hookup Disney was also telling kids that their value doesn't come from how society sees them or from romantic relationships with the opposite gender. Your value comes from within. And the sequel just throws those important messages out the window by having Quasimodo and Madeline get into a poorly written relationship.

    The only flaw in Disney's original HunchBack of NotreDame was The Gargoyles song about QuasiModo and Esmerelda's romance. Three reasons why the song SUCKS.
    Reason#1: All of Paris is burning to the ground because of Frollo's obsessive lust over Esmerelda combined with his self hatred over his lust for her which compels him to search for her no matter what on the ground that she's a witch who's endangering the souls of every citizen in Paris by her mere existence. Now is a great time to sing about Quasi Modo's romance to Esmerelda which leads to SEVERE MOOD WHIPLASH WHICH UNDERCUTS THE TENSION AND SUSPENSE OF THE STORY PARTICULARLY THE LAST SCENE WHERE PHOEBUS IS ALMOST EXECUTED FOR DEFYING FROLLOS ORDERS AND ESMERELDA SAVES HIM AFTER FROLLO'S MEN SHOOT HIM AND FALLS INTO THE RIVER. PRIORITIES GUYS!!!!!!!
    Reason# 2: The song ends being entirely pointless in the context of it's own existence because Phoebus and Esmerelda fall in love and I have to say I actually like the fact that Quasimodo the films protagonist doesn't get Esmerelda By not having Quasimodo get romance in the first movie Disney was telling children that Romantic Relationships or lack thereof DON'T DEFINE THEM. TO BAD DISNEY HAD TO SHOOT IT'S OWN MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST FILM IN THE FOOT BY MAKING A CRAPPY SEQUEL JUST TO GIVE QUASIMODO A GIRLFRIEND.
    Reason#3 The Gargoyles voice actors are LOUSY SINGERS particularly Victor's voice actor David Kimbourough

      I would add the Court of Miracles. The entire point of the movie is to show the Romani people as genuinely good people who are just trying to make a living and feed their families. This song literally uses every stinking Gypsy stereotype to paint them as bad guys only looking out for themselves. Heck, the “good” guy and narrator Clopin even gets dangerously close to hanging them for discovering their lair, not giving them a chance to plead their case and they’re friends of Esmerelda, a well known and respected Romani woman. And Clopin already knows Quasi is a good guy, but proceeds to attempt to hang him anyway.

      @@thing1thing2themediamaniac43 eh, not really. Its the second weakest of the movie and I would’ve preferred Someday over that one. As I said it pretty much reinforces negative Romani stereotypes when the movie is trying to show them as innocent people just trying to survive. Doesn’t help the Roma people are portrayed as dirty and ragged in the movie in comparison to the Parisians.

    • @thing1thing2themediamaniac43

      @kristinahuchison2511 I agree with you that Clopin wanting to execute Quasimodo is HIGHLY INCONSISTENT with his character when he initially interferes on Quasi's behalf against the mob at The Feast of Fools. But him wanting to execute Phoebus since Phoebus was a soldier subordinant to Frollo makes sense except Quasi was with Phoebus.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 4 месяца назад

      @@thing1thing2themediamaniac43 yes I agree with you about Clopin being paranoid of Phoebus because no one except Esmerelda and the man who helped get Phoebus to Notre Dame to hide and heal knew he disobeyed his orders and became a fugitive and martyr for the Romani people. But that still doesn’t change why Clopin accused Quasi of being evil as well when the entire city witnessed Esmerelda’s protection of him during the festival. The scene itself isn’t the problem, its the song because it reinforces negative Romani stereotypes when the whole point of the movie is to show how hateful and wrong Frollo and others were to perceive them as good for nothing thieves, murderers and second class citizens who didn’t belong in their town. Its a similar problem to the opening of Aladdin where one of the original verses was so racist Disney got so many complaints from Arab groups and were forced to change the lyrics to make it less offensive. Same with the song Savages from Pocahontas. I personally don’t find this song nearly as problematic as What Makes the Red Man Red from Peter Pan, but quite a few people had a big problem with it because of the reinforcement of negative Native American stereotypes by calling them filthy heathens and “only good when dead” which perfectly describes what actually happened to a lot of Indigenous people for a long time after Pocahontas’s story occurred.
      The ultimate point I’m getting at is Court of Miracles just isn’t a good song and as I said before, I would’ve much preferred Someday over this one and oh course one of the most annoying songs ever A Guy Like You. At least that one tried to be funny but ultimately failed except the one part with the saints snapping their fingers. Everything else is a huge no, and I don’t get why it was crammed with pop culture references as if it was trying to be Aladdin like Friend Like Me with Genie.

    The climax of this movie (if you can even call it that) is just plain stupid. Phoebus had NO reason to give in to Sarousch's demands. For one, he was heavily outnumbered. It was 30 or 20 (but, who's counting?) Soldiers against one carnie. And another thing, Sarousch wasn't holding a knife to Zephyr or threatening to drown him. He was just holding him.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  3 года назад +3

      I mean, you can't expect a guy to think totally rationally when his kid is on the line. Sarousch could have, for instance, swung Zephyr really hard headfirst into La Fidele and pulped his skull. Or he could have a knife up his sleeve. We just don't know.

    No. No. Did you seriously say the animation is pretty good? Dude, the animation in this movie is easily among the worst of the Disney sequels. It's worse than the animation in Mulan II, Tarzan II, Lion King II, the Cinderella movies, basically the only one that's even comparable to this saturday morning cartoon level is Belle's Enchanted Christmas.

    • @CodedLockFilms

      I'm talking about the quality of the animation itself, not the quality of the rendering. The rendering is awful, especially when it comes to the shading. But the animation, the actual movement of everything? That's just fine.
