    I think Zira is actually crazier than she lets on. My theory is that SHE found this cub, noticed that he had visual similarities as scar, named him and took him in, possibly even stealing him from his actual mother and now believes that he was "hand chosen" because he looks like him.
    I don't think Scar had anything to do with it. Which would completely explain the cubs age and the impossibility of Scar being around at the time Kovu was born.
    I also think Zira maybe had at best a one night fling with Scar, fell hopelessly in love and obsession and that Nuka is Scar's actual son, he looks much more like him, albeit scrawny, than Kovu ever did.
    This also explains why Kovu thinks he's part of the issue. Zira is batshit crazy and actually, yes there is supposed to be undertones of her having the hots for her "son" if he reminds her more of Scar than her real son.
    It would also make her a cougar, which she actually kinda looks like one, heh.
    I give a lot of credit to this movie. On top of the bad guy being incredibly complex in her own insanity, the ending message of the film is about realizing that people are not evil because they choose to be and if given a chance, forgiving people for their mistakes can actually benefit everyone in the end.
    I actually think both Kira and Kovu fit as being bland because both of them were raised under really bizarre situations. Kovu had it drilled into his head that Scar was a martyr and a god by a adoptive mother who was obsessed with the guy and led others who also probably didn't see Scar for what he was. Think about him as Hitler. Even today there are probably people who don't understand why what Hitler did was horrible, and there are people like Zira who will never see the truth.
    Zira is a great bad guy because she's legitimately frightening, uncomfortable and her song while not as catchy or as epic as be prepared, is quite a bit darker and more grotesque. Scar wanted to be king and was willing to kill to get there. But Zira wants to massacre everyone in the pridelands to take over.
    The movie has it's flaws, but honestly, I think it's a great follow up, because the story fits perfectly, talks about the real and previously not seen aftermath of what happens when a dictator takes over and is over thrown. There were some people who believed that he was a good leader. And in the end, it basically talks about truly forgiving the past, trying to understand why people can become obsessed or not want to see a truth.

      That's usually the fan consensus.
      Another theory is that Scar couldn't produce any worthy Cubs/males (theory of where the outlanders came from), so Zira hooked up with another similar lion (fan consensus it being one of the lions from the various comics) and Kovu and Vitani were born.

      I couldn't have said it better, THIS is why I love this sequel. I actually saw the sequel first (due to my parents not realizing) and I didn't have the chance to see the original for quite some time. I know that a lot of my passion for this movie is due to nostalgia, but I was genuinely creeped out and intrigued by Zira as a kid. The message about forgiving others for their actions, especially after their views have significantly changed, and the second message/theme about how an abusive/manipulative upbringing will convince the child they have the same wants and ambitions, really stuck with me.
      I was too tiny to remember the first time I saw this movie, but I was around 4 or 5 when I remember really understanding the base message. Obviously it became more apparent and more complex as I grew up, but I was a little disappointed after watching the original as a 8 or 9 year old because the message didn't hit me as hard. Part of that was probably my bias towards the second movie and the hype everyone gave about it, but the message of "Scar is evil and works with an evil group" and "take responsibility for your actions" didn't quite make the same impression. The Hyenas weren't allowed in the pride lands why? Was there no possible way that they could have shared the prides in peace like the other animals? Mufasa is praised as this untouchable king of goodness but gives no explanation for his mistreatment of those without the resources they need to survive. The outsiders have a reason to be banished and untrustworthy, they sided with the lion that murdered their king, blamed his Nephew, and destroyed the ecosystem.
      And while Simba does learn his lesson about "taking responsibility" by the end of the first movie, the message seems really muddled because HE WAS A KID. Scar manipulated him because Simba was a child and didn't know better. I don't know, the messages, both intentional and unintentional seemed confusing and a bit more blown out of proportion than the second. But then again that's just my opinion.

    Artistically, Zira's original death would have actually worked. it would of shown her to be so consumed by hatred that she would rather die than unite with Simba. It would have been consistent with her character.

      Uh, Zira already is consumed with hatred to the point where she was happy with dying over reuniting with Simba's pride (pun completely unintended). And they even made it work in the film! Artistically and generally!

    I kind of always felt like this movie was sort of like how Nostalgia Chick talks about the Little Mermaid. The story isn't really a progression for Kiara and Kovu, it's a progression for Simba. It's Simba coming to terms with his daughter growing up and having to learn that, not only does he have to let her grow up and do things on her own, but that he also needs to learn to listen to her as well. Looking back on it, if the romance really was supposed to be the main thing we were latching onto in the narrative, why was it that every scene with Kiara and Kovu was quickly followed up by Simba's reaction to it?

I mean, compared to Aladdin and the King of Thieves, Cinderella III, Lilo and Stitch 2, An Extremely Goofy Movie, Brother Bear 2, and Bambi II, this sequel just doesn't really seem to catch on quite well. Nor does it actually age well I might add.

      I see your point... Then again the last time I made that opinion was in middle school, yeah opinions change over time.... Whenever there's a "Return of Jafar", there's a "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Whenever there is a "Pocahontas 2", there's a "Lilo and Stitch 2" and whenever there's a "Cinderella II," there's a "Cinderella III."
      There's always a better direct-to-DVD Disney sequel than the first sequel that is intentionally bad. And there are also a few that are truly underrated.

    As for the movie itself, I actually think Zira is just as good a villain as Scar. Mostly because she's a much darker villain than Scar was (let's face it, Scar, while a good villain, was pretty incompetent at times and most of the suffering he caused was accidental).
    Zira was driven purely by cold blooded vengeance, the chance to not only take back the pridelands but to make Simba pay a horrible gruesome death. As I said, Scar caused suffering by accident, Zira however fully intended on making every prideland resident suffer. She may have cared somewhat for her children and group as a whole but ultimately her priorities deemed the death of Simba more important than her own group's interests and wants.
    Also, if they had her commit suicide as originally planned, I think she would've been a darker villain than even Frollo (IIRC, Frollo was never so blindly determined to get his way that he saw suicide as a better alternative than letting the heroes win).
    Honestly, Zira is what makes this movie for me. Her deeply disturbed actions and outright blind determination to get her revenge make her a fascinating villain.
    One more thing, couldn't Zira be a possible Shakespearian villain or am I just being too fan boyish at this point?

    There's one way they could have avoided the plot holes regarding Kovu not being Scar's son, why and when he was chosen, the chronology issues and the fact that Zira and her pride were nowhere to be seen in the first film:
    Forget Scar, and instead of making Zira her widow/fan, she should've been the daughter or grandaughter of some other evil lion exiled by Mufasa before the events of the first film.
    So: Zira's motivation is to avenge her ancestor who maybe starved to death; Simba's motivation is no longer his residual hatred of Scar, but his love for his father and his desicions and laws; and there are no plot holes.
    EDIT: Also they totally should have kept Zira's suicide in the final film.

    The Lion king 2: Simba's Pride is the best Disney sequel made by Disneytoon Studios(for many years I believed that it was made by WDAS), followed by Aladdin and The King of Thieves and Planes: Fire & Rescue.
    And I know that technically The Rescuers Down Under, is cosidered the best sequel to a WDAS movie(since is made by them), and also one of the most underrated Disney movies(and I love it by the way)...but personally I think that Lion King 2 is more underrated

  • @FoxtrotMouse

    The whole "Scar isn't Kovu's dad" came from the fact that he originally WAS Scar's kid, but they realized that would mean incest between Kovu and Kiara really late into production. So, they had to try and make it seem like he was totally not Scar's kid, which poked a few holes into the plot that couldn't be fixed on such short notice.

    I just wanted to point out that I think it's ridiculous to suggest that there's racist undertones to the Lion King because of their fur colours. The darker colour of the Hyenas is because they live in the shadows, the outlands, are dirty and unwell. Their colours fit their design well and tbh I'd probably developed them a very similar way. No one was thinking about race but if you wanna bring it up I'd also like to point out that Scar was played by a white guy, Mufasa by a black guy and the Hyena were played by a black woman, latino-American and white guy. Not to mention Kovu seems to be darker in colour than both Scar and his mother who are the main villains in both movies. (Note that his family are all darker, thinner and desaturated in colour when compared to the pride lions because they live in dirty, dark places like the hyena).
    I think that just because you CAN judge character by their appearance and make vague connections between how anthropomorphic animal characters look and race doesn't mean we need talk about racism in Disney or something like that.
    That's probably more than was necessary to talk about but I just thought it was a poorly thought-out comment he made and wanted to share my opinions as a sort of rebuttal on the matter.

    • @tmaxim2651
      @tmaxim2651 7 лет назад +4

      Oh and I think a more accurate comparison would be that the villains are like the lower class living in poor, dirty conditions. The pride lions are healthier, cleaner in appearance and design, and live in one of the most desirable areas of land around on their high rock where all the other characters bow down to them. Mufasa inherited this from his parents while Scar was poorer of health, wealth and mind. Honestly I'd say that's reading a little much into the Lion King but class is a more accurate comparison than between race in my opinion, especially when you consider how many varied species their are.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  7 лет назад +12

      The phrase was "coding," not "coating." It has nothing to do with their fur colors. I've talked about this with other people in the comments, but I'll summarize here:
      Coding is a complex topic, but in this context, it's used to describe visual and character-based shorthand to convey aspects of a character or group of characters to an audience. The lions in the movie live in the opulent, lush Pridelands, and are represented as fairly European by the fact that their society is organized much like a traditionally European hereditary monarchy. They are also presented as fairly peaceful and reasonable by nature
      The hyenas, by contrast, live in a dark, dank, dirty place, reminiscent of a stereotypical "inner city" environment, which are areas that, historically, have higher percentages of ethnic minorities. They are portrayed as nasty, dangerous, and inherently violent, also negative stereotypes associated with inner city environments, and by extension, the people who live there.
      When the hyenas move into the Pridelands, their coming has a very "there goes the neighborhood" connotation to it, and the idea is more or less "Of COURSE they run it right into the ground, because that's just what those damn hyenas are like." Sarabi believes that there is no solution to the issue beyond leaving Pride Rock, which has a historical parallel to a concept called "white flight." "White flight" was the term given to the phenomenon wherein when a lot of minorities started moving into the cities, many "well-to-do" white families moved into the suburbs to get away from said minorities. Resources were then diverted away from those areas, leading to the so-called "ghettos."
      Does any of this mean I think the creators of The Lion King were racist, or intentionally included this subtext? No, of course not. They were drawing upon cultural shorthand to illustrate a point to their audience. But through no fault of their own, said cultural shorthand is rooted in a very racist aspect of human history. Doesn't make The Lion King a racist film overall, but it's still a problematic aspect of the movie.

    • @tmaxim2651
      @tmaxim2651 7 лет назад +1

      CodedLockFilms Ah well, that kinda goes with the second comment I made about the classes. I don't think anything is intentional or harmful/problematic however. I mean I grew up watching this and I don't think everyone living in a dodgy neighbourhood is evil. But it's an interesting topic. Thanks for such an extensive reply.

    • @si91
      @si91 7 лет назад +6

      I don't think that this comparison really works. After all, the residents of America's inner cities never sided with the Vice President and staged a coup, taking over Washington and then running the country to the ground through cronyism, apathy, and mismanagement. It seems to me that it would be more accurate to see the hyenas as lower class peasants suffering in pre revolutionary France, Russia, China, Cuba, etc. who later seize power in a revolt led by a charismatic leader, only for the leader's mismanagement to lead to economic ruination, which is essentially what happened in these countries. Like peasants, the hyenas are always hungry, limited in their ability to move off their barren plot of land, and envious of the upper classes, who they see as having a lot of resources but being unwilling to share. Additionally, the elites of these societies feared that acceding to the demands of a lower class they saw as uncivilized would lead to destabilization, which is what happens after the hyenas take over.
      To imply that the movie blames the "inner cities" hyenas alone for the problems under Scar's rule seems a bit of a stretch. While we don't know why the hyenas were exiled in the first place, the movie strongly suggests that allowing them to run rampant over the Pridelands without lions to keep them in check kicked the "Circle of Life" out of balance, leading to food shortages. Indeed, the movie doesn't even seem to fully blame the hyenas for the food shortages, but rather attribute them to the mismanagement of Scar, the "European" royal lion. His willful blindness to his own policy failures ensures that even the hyenas are starving by the end of the film.
      Again, the problem that the hyenas face is not that they are the victims of racial or species based discrimination, but that they are hungry and want more food which would suggest that the conflict in the Lion King is more of a class issue than a race issue (notice that in the final scene of "Be Prepared", Scar's silhouette against the moon resembles a Communist hammer and sickle). In light of this, Sarabi's insistence that the lions leave Pride Rock seems more reminiscent of the Russian and French monarchs' attempts to flee into exile, or wealthy Cubans and Chinese fleeing to the US and Taiwan respectively to avoid Communist takeovers, than to "white flight."
      Just my two cents.

    I don't get annoyed by the fact that the Disney sequels are lazy and cheap anymore. it's almost become like a fact of life and I got over being offended by them years ago but this is one to which I take an exception because unlike the others there's no reason why it had to be a half assed home video. The first Lion King was incredibly successful. You can't tell me that if they didn't put more into the production, got some more elite writers to work on it, and released it in theatres a few years after the first there wouldn't have been an audience for it. with a movie like Cinderella I can see how a sequel might not have worked as well theatrically but for stuff like Aladdin and Lion King there was no reason to go the home video route.

      There actually is a reason. After the economical failure of (the admittedly poorly marketed) Rescuers Down Under, Walt Disney Animation Studios decided to never make sequels to their movies ever again... (until Frozen)

    • @cartmanfan4life1
      @cartmanfan4life1 9 лет назад

      Zaazza85 you know I did completely forget about the rescuers down under which didn't do too well, so it is understandable that that made them a little bit more cautious but the original lion king was far more critically and commercially successful than the original rescuers so there's more of a built in audience plus if they'd gotten it out within 5 years they could've kept the momentum going whereas I think rescuers down under came out about 15 years later or something like that.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 лет назад +7

      No. First cousins share a grandparent, second cousins share a great-grandparent, et cetera. The type of cousin you are ("first," "second," etc.) refers to the number of generations between two cousins and their nearest common ancestor. The term "removed" refers to the number of generations separating the cousins. So your first cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your first cousin.
      Since Mufasa and Scar were brothers, their children would be cousins. This makes any child of Scar the first cousin once removed of any of Simba's children.

    Nice to see you back, BTW. Your opinion on this movie is pretty similar to mine. What really bugs me is forcing Simba and Nala into the traditional roles of "Overprotective Dad who just doesn't understand" and "Mom who materializes only to dispense advice." Movies like "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" prove that kids can relate just as well with compelling parent characters as they can with kid characters.

    • @ColorTheoryEB
      @ColorTheoryEB 9 лет назад +11

      +animagusurreal That's a common problem with sequels, that involve the main character being a father. It happened in both Happy Feet 2 and Ice Age 4. Sometimes they take a character that was likable enough, and turn him into a worrying father, making him less likable.

    But aren't Simba and Nala half siblings? Since Mufasa was the only male besides Scar in the pride lands. So I don't see why it would be taboo in Disney's eyes to have Kiara and Kouv be cousins.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 лет назад +2

      +RolyaRain It's basically because Simba and Nala being half-siblings is much easier for Disney to ignore. It's one of those things that you only really think about if it's pointed out. Whereas in this movie, it would be impossible not to acknowledge it.

    • @yankeediva92
      @yankeediva92 8 лет назад +1

      +CodedLockFilms Aw I see, it's funny because I heard a rumor that the reason Disney wouldn't buy the "Back to the Future" franchise was because it had incest in it. Yet they bought the 'Star Wars' franchise.. lol kinda ironic if it's true.

    • @IamWalkingDead1
      @IamWalkingDead1 8 лет назад +1

      +RolyaRain I love how in the original plans for the star wars trilogy, George wanted Luke and Leia to hook up... But kept them siblings... And wanted them to love each other more once they learned... Thankfully the actors and crew said no. Back then people had the courage to step up against Georgie Boy's insanity

    • @NorthStar8211
      @NorthStar8211 8 лет назад +7

      +RolyaRain That's because Simba and Nala are NOT officially half-siblings as Mufasa is not officially considered to be Nala's father. People get based too much on that bit of dialogue between Simba and Nala when Simba tells her that she sounds like his father and she replies that at least one of them does but when the Disney script-writers wrote this, what they had in mind was Simba and Nala referring to a person that they both know, not a person they are both related to and the key word here is that Simba says "MY" father and not "OUR" father. Plus, when Zazu tells Simba and Nala that they will be married, Simba says that he cannot marry her because she is his FRIEND when he could have said SISTER. Now, in a more recent interview, directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff said that they didn't think at that time that the identity of Nala's father was important in the story of The Lion King (little did they know!) but they think it may be either Mufasa or Scar. However, in another interview, Tom Bancroft confirmed that he and the team of animators involved in the making had taken for granted that Nala is related to neither Mufasa nor Scar. Besides, after so many years since the movie’s making, Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff seem to forget that Scar was definitely not considered to be Nala's father even at that time since, in a deleted scene, he forcefully attempts to make him his mate and banishes her from the Pride Lands when she refuses (part of this scene was used later in the stage musical version) so they probably don't have all the details fresh in their mind and if they are wrong about Scar, they are probably wrong about Mufasa too.
      Another thing about why people think that Mufasa is Nala's father is
      because they are based too much on what happens in real life in lion prides where the dominant lion is the one that mates with all the females. Others think it is Scar because in real life, when another male lion takes over, it kills the cubs that are the offspring of other males. However, the animals in the movie are partly humanised and, according to Eisner, they metaphorically represent certain aspects of modern day humanity. That custom of lions killing cubs does not seem to exist in The Lion King as Simba did not kill Zira's cubs either and he is not related to any of them (and even in real life it does not always happen). And the movie, lion kings probably select only one mate and the other lionesses mate with rogues (this thing about lionesses sneaking out and mating with rogues happens in real life too). Based on these, while it still a possibility that Mufasa is her father, it is a lot more likely that Nala's father is an unknown rogue.
      It should also be mentioned that in earlier drafts of The Lion King,
      Sarabi and Nala's mother were sisters and it may have been implied that Mufasa was the father of both their cubs but the incest scenario would not guarantee a hit at the box-office.

    Good review as always. Really, no Direct to DVD will be as good as its predecessor. Lion King 2 had a very daunting act to follow. My main issue with this one (and I haven't seen it) is: Where did these Outlanders come from? The first movie showed all the lionesses following Simba and the Hyenas following Scar. Yet here, they say he had a pride. These lionesses come from nowhere and it's really irritating and even lazy. Are you planning to do more? I would to see you do HOND 2, if you get the chance, but it's no biggie.

    It was a track from a collections of songs related to the Lion King called "Rhythm of the Pride Lands".

    The reason he's chosen as not being Scars actual biological son is because even though in the wild there can be multiple kids being born from sibling family marriages. Disney wanted to emphasize that that isn't exactly what they wanted to have Scars brother's grandchild to fall in love with a younger Scar. If he was his son then that would be very complicated and turn their family tree into how it is in the wild where family orientation doesn't mean jack-squat! So avoid the family complication's that people are confused and judging in a Romeo and Juliet comparison. Thus, make him a random guy and it's all cool!

    1) For the moral high-ground I have to disagree. The Capulet's are arguably the antagonists. Let's look at the members of the two families, Romeo's cousin is Benvolio who is the trying to be the peacemaker. On the other hand, you have Juliet's cousin Tybalt who is the type of guy that would pick a fight in an empty room. Plus you see that Juliet's parents are much more aggressive than Romeo's
    2) The kingdom running into the ground wasn't Scar's fault. It' was the deus ex machina drought that was the reason rule under Scar was so bad since the Circle of Life shows Favouritism.

    "Daddy, you're lying about Kovu attacking you! I've known him for a whole day and a half! He'd NEVER do that!" *Runs away to be with the lion who was just directly accused of trying to MURDER her own father*
    Kiara was right about Kovu, but purely by chance. Kovu could've just been a really great actor around her and she would've fell for it hook, line and sinker. A love-sick idiot. Just like Juliet, I guess. She didn't even question Kovu about the ambush, just completely absolved him of all blame with no evidence that he wasn't directly involved. Every decision she made in this movie was a middle finger to Simba. Simba was constantly validated for not trusting her to do shit on her own - she nearly got killed several times and there was a neighbouring pride of bloodthirsty lions who wanted him and his family dead, and yet HE'S the asshole?? Fuck off TLK2.
    This movie is way worse than people give it credit for, thank you for pointing out its flaws, something not many are brave enough to do given how many rabid fans it has.

    I think my biggest issue with this movie's story is the sheer existence of Zira and the outlanders. How can they exist when it was blatantly obvious that *nobody* supported Scar at the end of the first movie? Did Scar have his own pride off screen? Did Simba make some decisions that Pride Rock's denizens were not fond of during his first couple months of ruling? What happened? They never bother to explain this at all and it bugs the hell out of me.

    Okay, I'm not gonna lie....but, this movie really should've gotten a "PG" rating, instead of a "G" rating. Seriously, could someone explain to me how this movie ended up with a "G" rating, instead of "PG" rating again?!

      Funny thing is, besides the suicide being original, Kovu and Kiara were related, Zira commenting suicide, and Nuka's dying words being "I finally got your attention, didn't I?"

    Hi, Jesse! Glad to have "Getting real tired of your shit, Romeo" spread around! And hey -- 24 hours and some significant interactions actually dating back a few days? These guys are MILES ahead of R&J, who decided to get married after TWO hours and WERE married before a full day had passed.

      It's not terribly difficult to be miles ahead of people who drove nails into their feet at the metaphorical starting line. And then welded barbells onto the nails. And then started making out.

    You said that the song "He Lives in You" comes from the Broadway musical "The Lion King" and while the song is featured in the musical it actually comes from a album called "Rhythm of the Pride Lands" they just use a shorter version of the song in "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride" the version that's on "Rhythm of the Pride Lands" is longer then an the version that's in "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride".

    Why is it that sequels tend to recycle things from the predecessor or have similar but different equivalents? Like lots of things in A Christmas Story 2 (the tongue inside a pneumatic tube, for example), the entire plot of Little Mermaid 2, the musical numbers in Lion King 2, the plot of all the Final Destination movies. That seems especially prevalent in straight to video Disney sequels.

    It’s not. It’s a straight steal of the Japanese 1960’s anime series Kimba the White Lion. Shot by shot. Same characters. It’s crazy.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes Upendi. I genuinely think that song wouldn't have sounded out of place in the first movie.
