Wow, that is absolutely disgusting. I wondered what could possibly be worse than Disney's Hunchback 2 and this was it. I'm autistic and while yes, that's different from being physically disabled like Quasimodo, watching the Disney film as a kid, I identified with his worry of how other people perceive him and his need for self-worth. Like you say, this is despicable and hateful.

Not only is Quasimodo one of culture’s most prominent disabled characters, but Esmeralda is one of its most prominent Rromani characters.
In this movie, she’s basically stripped of all cultural identity right down to her name and is made into this…nothing…of a Generic Peasant Girl character.

@@CodedLockFilms And remember how “Bells of Notre Dame” told an entire story as a piece of anti-Frollo satirical puppet theatre in the Disney version? And it was awesome?
What does this movie’s “Welcome to Paris” song tell the audience about the Plot, Themes, and Characters of this movie? How does this film visually convey how Jean Claude is a tyrant who robs the people of their spirit?

@@CodedLockFilms If you don’t mind me saying this, I would like it if no one puts an adaptation that stuck with the source material as a Disney knockoff, unless they do what Disney does by removing key important elements that were from the book, and replace it with “no one dies at the end” or that they have no lessons to learn from the experience. This is one of those examples where they deviated heavily from the source material, much like Disney did with their first Jungle Book movie.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Esmeralda actually isn’t a prominent Romani character because canonically, she’s not actually Romani. In the book, there’s a sub-plot involving Esmeralda trying to find her biological mother. Her only hint as to who her mother might be is a little pink shoe that she wore as a baby. Later, she finds out that one of the nuns of Notre Dame has the other shoe and is therefore her mother. Turns out that Esmeralda was actually stolen from her mother by the Romani folk and then replaced by Quasimodo.
Yeah, the book had some pretty racist undertones.

This movie is the worst kind of adaptation: The kind that not only gets literally everything wrong about the source material, but comes off looking like it absolutely loathes said source material and everyone who knows and loves it. And the fact that it also practically said “Fuck the disabled to Hell” by making the titular character not even remotely a thing like his inspiration really makes it a whole lot worse than if it would’ve been otherwise.

Oh hey! What a pleasant surprise to see you again in my recommended after... What, 10 years? You weren't posting for a long time at some point and I thought the channel was dead! LOVE the salt-and-pepper look, that's simultaneously badass and very fluffy... like a teddy lumberjack. Noice.
I just wanted to let you know here that while the g-slur disclaimer is well-meaning and I'm sure very much appreciated, it's kind of pointless to say that you won't say a slur while showing the slur visually. I'm sure that you were just concerned that most people wouldn't understand what you were referring to if you had just said something like "the G slur", since that slur is still widely normalized (in large part due to the original Disney film aimed at children lol.) But imagine if you showed the uncensored, hard-R, n-word on screen in that same way! Within the first 5 seconds, no less! That would still be jarring even if you openly referred to it as a slur, no? Especially with youtube mobile showing small soundless video previews, which is how I was introduced lol.
My recommendation is to hyphenate missing letters so people can make an educated guess in the future, like g-psy or g--sy. Or, you could provide a little context to point people to what you're referring to, i.e.: "If you're as familiar with Hunchback media as me, you probably already know that most characters in these adaptations refer to Esmerelda and her community as a certain word starting with 'g'. That word is a racial slur targeting Romani, so I have no interest in it, check out my other video for more info."
Anyways, seeing you in my recommended made me nostalgic, so excuse me while I catch up on whatever I've missed. Good to have your content in my life again!

Deep down, I think that at the very least, Seltzer and Friedberg don’t have any pretentions. They know their “__ Movies” are just there to leech a few spare dollars from “a contingent of Americans who watch movies based solely on the commercials. People who wait until they’re actually in line at the theater before deciding what to see. This contingent is generally known as “teenage boys”, and as long as the trailer promises them exactly what they want-hot women and fart jokes-a movie can easily make a profit before anyone realizes it’s horrible”, to quote Jordon Davis of The Agony Booth. That is the full beginning and end of their artistic ambitions.
Now Golden Films, on the other hand, think their Bare Minimum Writing is brilliant. They are convinced that their random uses of Inappropriate Classical Music enhances and adds “depth” to the “stories” that they “write”. You just know that at least one of the writers was convinced that the sub-Hugo the Goat Kisser level Laughing Bats were hysterical. And at least one of the writers thought that the…ending…was just so extremely powerful and uplifting and profound. Mayhaps they were even convinced that the “It’s life! Wheel of life! Wheel of life!” song that comes in between the cure scene and Jean-Claude being banished from Paris was Circle of Life levels of amazing.
