  • In 15th-century Paris, Jehan (Brandon Hurst), the evil brother of the archdeacon, lusts after a Gypsy named Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller) and commands the hunchback Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) to capture her. Military captain Phoebus (Norman Kerry) also loves Esmeralda and rescues her, but the Gypsy is not unsympathetic to Quasimodo's condition, and an unlikely bond forms between them. For those who don't know, Quasimodo got his name from Quasimodo Sunday, the first after Easter Sunday. He was found abandoned in Notre Dame cathedral on that day and given the name by Archdeacon Frollo.

Lon Chaney was one of the truly brilliant actors in film history. He could do almost anything. He deserves better than to be seen here with so many damn commercials.

The scene when Esmeralda is walking through the cathedral and Quasimodo is playing his bells reminds me of the Disney version when Esmeralda sings God help the Outcasts and Quasimodo is watching her

    Bravo!!! Magnificent performances all around.
Hollywood of today take note -- Irving Thalberg knew how to co-produce a movie with a highly intelligent script.
Many thanks for uploading this gem!

ugh! They've turned all the good characters into religious and all the bad and religious characters into good. Very inconsistent with the message the book is trying to convey. But it's 1923 so, it's not that surprising...

The real message of the book is that architecture is good and fate is unavoidable anyway, so it doesn't matter who is religious and who's not. Victor Hugo himself made Frollo an alderman for the opera "La Esmeralda"... granted, this silent film touches on neither of the books' themes, but hey.
