Well after buying the gh7 i learned there is NO open gate 4k opthion in the camera. The 4.4 k is a cropped in pixel to pixel mode. This means worse image quality, worse noise performance and all the other disadvantages that come with a cropped image. With my gh5 i used 4k50 open gate all the time but it was 8bit only . I thought the gh7 would fix that but now i see there is no open gate 4k at all.. so 5.8 k is the only real open gate option in the camera but its not available in 50/60 fps… if i knew that before i would have bought the s52x , it does 6k open gate and no 50 , just like gh7 does. I cross my fingers lumix brings 5.8k 50 in open gate via firmware update or at least real 4k50 in open gate.
Some of us study long enough to realize that Micro 4/3 has MANY advantages for us. It takes more than a knee jerk reaction to reap the benefits of any particular format. Each format, each brand, and each camera model is unique. Use the right tools for the job.
It's kinda wild that noise is super important especially with a m4/3 and yet some reviewers only shot footage in direct overhead sunlight with no ISO tests (Petapixel to name one). Glad WhoIsMatt did an ISO test but in my experience once you grade the footage is when you can see the actual noise performance.. You can see quite a bit of noise at ISO 6400 @ 20:39 but maybe it's good with ISO 1600 or less?

It really comes down to if you're gonna use davinci anyway and want b raw or if you don't care and want to shoot compressed.
Each new Lumix camera seems to be a test bed for features on future cameras. Some of those get into previous cameras via firmware updates, provided the hardware supports them. This likely will replace my GH4, which I've avoided upgrading, patiently waiting for a GH with PDAF. FINALLY!!!!
@@JeffBourke not at all, that's not how I see it. I see it as a very helpful tool. I usually color space transform V log to C log anyways. It's just one less process I'll have to do.

Hello, well, what you said at 31 minutes mark that panasonic uses GH7 as a test bed left me very disappointed with your review. I use M43 and have been using them since Gh4 days, and i also own S5M2. I prefer M43 because there is no perceived video quality degradation for using such a light setup mainly due to lighter lenses. I am going to dislike your review, something i rarely do for the misinformation you spread.
24:46 I had a serious problem with V-LOG files on SH1, which was the skin color change in the shadows, if you look at the skin color it gets purple redish spots, and apparently on the GH7 it remains the same.
Anyone turning up their nose on the GH7 or any M4/3 camera is just a gear fanboy or gal who has been sold a lie by RUclips influencers who say full frame is the best. The gear is an extension of you - it’s a tool! Understand the limitations of your gear and build an ecosystem of solutions around it for you to get the work done. Is it a surprise the GH5, a 2017 release, is still a great camera till this day? I rest my case.
That's the big question that no one is answering. The only reason I'd buy the GH7 is if it's stabilisation is noticeably better, as that is major benefit to me.
Solid review Matt....I wonder if Sony will incorporate 6K open gate with the a7SIV and 32 bit float audio? If they do, plus add the a7RV screen....game over.
my ears!! lol,... I far from the micro four thirds from my Gh5s, and now full frame, but the GH7 having 32bit float audio is a huge wedding videographer wanted list as the zoom recorders are now switching to 32 bit float.
The GH7 effectively has simultaneous dual ISO, as does the GH6 in "extended DR" mode. The way a conventional dual-ISO sensor works is that you select one of two gains to be applied when clocking out the sensor, and that's what you get. The way a dual-gain sensor like GH7 works is that it simultaneously applies both gains to _every_ pixel, and then chooses which one to use based on the signal strength. If there isn't much charge in the photosite (low light level, fewer photons) then it uses the result of the high gain stage, otherwise it uses the result of the low gain stage. It's analogous to how Sound Devices' multi-stage A/Ds in the MixPre II and 8-series work. GH7's implementation appears better than GH6's though.
GH4,5,6,7 has always been the best cameras that are thrown the most shade by full frame snobs that don’t understand MFT. Panasonic is leaps ahead and honestly the GH7 won’t need a replacement for MANY years to come.
I'm a G9 user and STILL getting the GH7 over the G9ii. The PDAF, the Grip, the tilt up screen, the fan, CFExpress for burst photo speed, Locking Dial. Awesome for photos and just a bonus that it comes with over-the-top video and audio features that I might not personally use. I see it lasting a good decade before really WANTING to upgrade.
Thanks for the review. MFT versus Full Frame advantage is zoom lense size. An MFT doesn't need a Hubble Space Telescope and a crane to support telephoto.

You sure about that? Cinema 4K is 4096x2160, the 4K60fps open gate is 4352x3264 so you're definitely getting more pixels. Even 5.7K 16:9 is 5723x3024 so you're getting more than that vertically.
@@whoismatt no not sure, but that is the way it is on the GH6. It would be epic if it was “open gate” 60. Particularly taller than the 16:9 crop. But if it’s like the GH6 it’s not.
@@whoismatthi there, great video. If possible, can you please check and share the differences in 5.8k OG and 4.4k OG, in terms of field of view and crop factor. Thank you again, you are amazing 💯
I own sony a7iv bodies and I was thinking recently. I use them for weddings (mainly hybrid coverage) and I always film in 4k60. The crop factor is 1.5 (it is annoying but this is not my point right now). Then I use lens breathing compensation. As far as I know it adds 1.11 times crop. Then I use active stabilization which adds another 1.1x crop. Combined it is a whopping 1.83 times crop. That is closer to an mft crop than an apsc and the camera is downsampling the footage from 9.85 mpx which is barely more than 4k. At that point I bet you money the gh7 and the g9ii both have superior image quality. And even then I like the video I get out of the a7iv (even the bokeh is enough with f1.4 lenses), so I think these cameras are capable of really great things. Honestly looks impressive and the price for these specs are really good.

Apple wants to keep reasons alive for prores users not to buy a high end PC that is 4 times as powerfull and still half as expensive. Could that be why Prores Raw whitebalance is only adjustable in Final cut?
That isn't the reason. I work at Adobe - I'm the product manager responsible for what formats we support - and I can assure you that the lack of great ProRes RAW support is completely something on our side and something we plan on changing. Apple is very supportive.

FINALLY!!!!
You’ve been holding out for 10 years! It’s finally time to upgrade!
When I saw "Great AF" in the thumbnail, for a hot second, I thought you meant "Great As F**K"
$3700 AUD (body only) F… that! I’ll stick with my GH5II & Pro MF3 lens collection- still rocks! Maybe one day I’ll upgrade when the price comes down
Official ARRI C LOG is crazy!
Why? Because it’s called “ARRI”? It’s just another gimmick LUT. Like if your car had “Official Ferrari Mode”…. Doesn’t make the car a Ferrari.
@@JeffBourke not at all, that's not how I see it. I see it as a very helpful tool. I usually color space transform V log to C log anyways. It's just one less process I'll have to do.
you have to pay extra .. and put it in low light .. a disaster.. and artifacts??? all the time
@@JacobLuevanoYeah its a $199 add on, but it does help if you are in a professional workflow. But then again if you're on a set that is using an Arri Alexa, you most likely have a better B or crash cam than the GH7. Which despite what all the reviewers say doesn't make a great crash cam
2K price, perfect Autofocus, 5.7k Pro res, 32Bit float audio. SOLD
2.5k if you want 32bit audio
@@bedenegative6450 still super good for me
Just so many ShillTubers around.
Would you rather shoot s5ii or gh7 at a wedding?
That's the big question that no one is answering. The only reason I'd buy the GH7 is if it's stabilisation is noticeably better, as that is major benefit to me.
Solid review Matt....I wonder if Sony will incorporate 6K open gate with the a7SIV and 32 bit float audio? If they do, plus add the a7RV screen....game over.
By that point we may see a S1Hii with all of those features as well. Panasonic is really competing!
Man open gate would be so nice because every client wants a reel to go with their video deliverable. Cropping a 16:9 into 9:16 is tricky
Yes that is worth upgrading for
They better
@@billem16why not film some shots in 9:16 on the day
How is this only $2200?? I feel like there has to be a catch.
Yup it’s a pretty crazy deal
my ears!! lol,... I far from the micro four thirds from my Gh5s, and now full frame, but the GH7 having 32bit float audio is a huge wedding videographer wanted list as the zoom recorders are now switching to 32 bit float.
I thought it was 3 chanels of 32bit through the XLR accessory and when you add in the 4th (the cameras mic jack) everything switches to 24bit.
The mic jack on the xlr accessory is stereo. That's two channels there and one each for the xlrs.
Got it!
Does it have dual iso or something. Or what’s the best higher iso
Hey! I would feel comfortable up to about ISO 6400. The review shows iso examples 😁
Just bought 4 for event coverage. Prefer Sony but when you need to buy cameras and lenses in bulk, the Sony’s are just too expensive.
Hi Matt ... if i want to do documentary-style animals / birds "slomo" footage at HIGH quality.
2 Questions :
1 - Should i look into THIS model rather than the Sony A7IV ?? If so .... what would be the determinig factor ?
2 - What Telephoto lens 200 to 600 mm would be good / sharp on this ?
Thanks !
很好的開箱評測,來自香港的感謝。Thank you very much🙏
*every feature except internal ND
First company to crack that in a full frame camera take my $$$$$$$ 😜
I am using a GX85 for vacation video's. I want to upgrade to a more capable body, mainly for video. Would a GH5 mark 2 (used) be a good option? I don't want to buy new stuff. I like the S5 too for the price currently. I intend to use them with my Zhiyun m3 gimbal
I own a S5iix and a GH5. My GH5 is really old and I'm thinking of upgrading it as my bcam. Is the gh6 worth buying since it's cheaper or would you just spend more for the gh7?
i want a s5iii with the same features that gh7 has! give me 4k60p oversampled and 120p with a crop is ok!!! But dont use sony sensors plz!!! Panasonic winers!
I read the GH7Specs at B&H and it says it can record externally at 12 bit raw. Woul that be 4:2:2 or 4:4:4?
neither
@@michalwalks so which is it?
@@bernardomachado2842 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 are terms used for video formats that involve chroma subsampling, a method of compressing video by reducing color information. RAW video does not use chroma subsampling. It captures all the data from the camera sensor without compression or reduction in color information.
@@michalwalks thanks for clarifying! So Pro res raw has no compresion? As oposed to arri raw? Is the 12 bit raw hdmi output from the gh7 that can be recorded on the ninja pro res raw or something else?
I’m now mildly sad I have bought so many Blackmagic cameras
what is the possibility that Lumix/Panasonic makes a hotshoe shotgun mic - no cables just the hotshoe that would incorporate 32bit float?
I’ll ask them 😂 it’s a great idea!
Ok elephant in the room Matt, does it work with the sigma 18-35mm well with autofocus? if it does, its going into my cart.
One thing I learned with the GH5, GH6, BGH1... is that i'm never pre-ordering a Panasonic again as prices drop like a rock within weeks...
While shooting in higher frame rates are you still able to have audio?
I'm still rocking the GH5. Sometimes just in 10-bit 1080! For instagram, clients eyes don't see the difference....but dang, the GH5 auto focus still curses me!
Thank you for your presentation.
Texas?!? Me too!! I had no idea you were in Texas. Dallas?
Great m4/3 camera but its still a m4/3 camera.
What we really want is all these features in a S2h body.
What about i nternal BRAW recording just like prores and an OLPF
I've never recorded via SSD before; is that considered risky for shooting weddings, seeing as it's only one drive and there's no redundancy? Or are you able to dual record to the SD slot and SSD?
Yes, depending on the bit rate, you can record to both.
Can you fit a cage and top handle with the xlr adapter?
Any possible way to mount a top handle?
Mmmm the 4.4k is actualy just a cropped square of the 16:9, better off just shooting 16:9
@@whoismatt also, LOVED your video on this. Watch all the other and then really enjoyed watching your. Super fun, great review.
Just a heads up, GH6 also does open gate 4.4k :)
The battery capacity is the only objetive kind of flaw in my opinion.
yes but the price is tooo high..
Such a wonderful, nformative and positive review♥️
I will not be dragged in m43 world again lol ...r5c!
i think your mind is on Sony cameras a little bit 18:17 😆
32 bit float audio was the info that made me go "OOOOOOOOOOHHHYEAH FINALLY!!!" Finally a feature that simply makes live easier, plug the mic in and DONE no messing around with setting when band play or you are at concerts etc. it workes and it is solved forever. I just love it
Why are u reviewing this..leave it to the pros beard
bought the GH6 too soon
GH6 is still getting that Arri log update at least 😊 (for $200 😩)
Apple wants to keep reasons alive for prores users not to buy a high end PC that is 4 times as powerfull and still half as expensive.
@@fergus.hammond Awesome! What are the reasons for whitebalance adjustment not being supported for ProresRaw in Premiere Pro? Have a nice day! :)
@@thefruit Candidly, it's been other format priorities that we've had that have been more urgent than improving ProRes RAW support. It's a tough call: we've got a lot of customers and it's a tricky balance to please as many of them - as many of you! - as possible.
