    Have you ever used Target Disk Mode on Intel Macs? Things have changed on Apple Silicon, TDM was replaced with Sharing Mode in macOS Recovery. Use this to easily transfer large files between Macs!

      Is there still a way to boot into the other Mac hard dive because you could have old way

    Looks a little complicated than holding T on Intel Macs. But At least it's still possible to transfer data via USB/Thunderbolt instead of the rumoured WiFi or SMB/FTP only connection.

      Agreed! The good news is the speed is just as fast as target disk mode!

    First off, love all your Apple Silicon videos, keep it up! 1) Can you use Sharing Mode to access another Mac from a Windows machine/over a network? 2) Could you please make a video on how to use the new System Recovery to reinstall macOS?

      Rhys, this is a great question. I tried it with a windows 10 laptop just for fun but could not get it to show up. I will have to look into this more.

    Does this work between an Apple Silicon M1 and an Intel Mac?

    The share disk option is not available. Anything else I can do ?

  • @JonathanCr0ss

    Not working for me.
    I have an M1 mac setup with Share Disk enabled.
    The other computer is an Intel machine running Mojave.
    When I connect the USB cable, I see the name of the M1 show up under Locations > "Network". When I double click on the computer name, I am getting "Connection failed" message. If I click on "Connect As" nothing at all happens.
    Could firewall, disabled guest account, etc be causing this issue?

    The Mac share mode can you additionally share the host’s external usb drives as network location? Or it can only share the internal drive? Thanks in advance!!

    First, I appreciate you showing us TheInternet users how this is done. However, 2:28 "It's as simple as that!"??????? WTH are you talking about, that was like 37 steps?!?!?!?!!?? Target disk mode was 3: 1. plug it in. 2. Boot holding T. 3. Find the stuff on your disk.

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  3 года назад

      Matt, to be honest... you are right!!! I agree, and have been using Target Disk Mode for years. Super simple and fast! Apple has made the decision to prevent against hardware attacks and put this behind recovery.

    So this only works to share files from a silicon Mac to a old one
    Why would you even want to do that?
    I’m trying to get my files transferred to a new Mac Studio m2 from a intell

    really! REALLY! This is absurd! I get the need for security but what are you supposed to do if the display on the laptop is cracked!? (considering that even with an external connected Apple's default is not to mirror the screen but to have it function as a secondary display as default) You have to get to the settings to tell it to mirror. The great thing about holding down T was that you can enter TDM regardless of a display...anyways have a good day, I now need to figure out how to jump through 20 hoops with a blindfold on.

    I've used target disk mode many times on intel. Also, can you boot into the macs drive from another mac via share disk, or is that option gone?

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  3 года назад

      Do you mean the old option "boot to target disk mode" if so apple did not include that as an option for Share Disk.

      @@Mr.Macintosh that was useful feature before why would they get rid of it on the new silicon Macs

    So I bought a Thunderbolt 4 cable specifically to share my m1 Mini with my m1 16" but I got nothing. Is it supposed to be Thunderbolt 3? Nothing comes up on my 16" when I set my Mini to share the drive.

      You have to look on the destination under “network location” its terrible though as you can only cherry pick files and directories not dump the whole user folder over …

    how is it asking your for password at 1:38 when i try it asks me for FileVault key which i don’t remember so does this mean im fckd? my os system got corrupted during update so i want to reinstall it but i get the same pop message at 1:40 but instead of password its asking my key code which i forgot.

    This is great if you want a few documents What about all the library folder all the preference files the total use the folder everything all the permissions are wrong you are you’re in as a guest user it’s pathetic compared to target disc mode and considering if you know the encryption key and you’ve unlocked it where is the security benefit in this ? You have thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 3 speeds capable of far greater than wifi or GB ethernet
