  • The Apple Silicon MacBook Pro and MacBook Air can only run one native monitor. You CAN run multiple monitors with DisplayLink Docks and Dongles! I will show you what kind of docks and dongles that you will need to get multiple monitors working on your Apple Silicon Mac. I will also go through how to download and install DisplayLink software and get it configured to work. Let me know if you have any questions!!

Can I use a usual cheap USB-C hub (basic hubs you buy for MacBooks with USB, HDMI etc) and plug in a StarTech DisplayLink USB3 to HDMI Adapter into the basic Hub to connect the first Monitor and connect the seconD Monitor just by plugging it into the basic Hub via HDMI?

Will i need to purchase a dock so that the connection for the 2 displays is being fed through the same usb-c port or something?
Like do I need a dock that has displayport technology/compatibility?

I am a novice with all this stuff. Thank you for doing such a great job walking us through this. The big missing piece for me is the physical set up and connection. I can see the wires and make an assumptions how all the bits go together. But what would be hugely helpful is to see you connect all the components together while explaining what each is. Just a thought to help the newbies like me.

Adrian, I am working on more videos for new Mac users. I've realized that I have both new and advanced. So you will see some videos talking about how to install windows 10 on your apple silicon mac via open source tools. But other videos like this one where I try to put myself in a new users shoes. I think we take technology for granted times and some of the steps that might seem easy for some could trip up others. Thank you for your comments and stay tuned for more!

@@Mr.Macintosh Can I ask another question which I hope you will answer in future videos. Do I need actual Displayport cables to add multiple displays to the M1 MacBook Air or does the Displayport software that I download work with HDMI cables. If I need specific cables, are there better cables? What if my monitor only handles HDMI? It seems like I am buy all there little bits and pieces and fitting them together to give me access to two monitors.

Can you do a video on setting one external monitor to portrait mode? I can't make it work. The display preferences app shows a picker for "standard, 90, 180, 270" degrees of rotation, but choosing anything other than "standard" fails, times out and then resets the display to landscape.
I've heard it's an issue with the M1 silicon, but not sure. Its frustrating as hell though.

I've noticed after installing DisplayLink that the refresh rate can often times get well below 60hz when I'm not connected to the monitors (and just using the laptop as a laptop). The screen and cursor is laggy. Closing the laptop cover and re-opening it seems to be a temporary fix -- but only for a few moments.
All in all, I'm very frustrated by this and it's making me consider upgrading to an M1 Pro just for the multi-monitor support feature. I've also noticed that TrueTone does not work on the non-native monitor -- which is less than ideal.
Has anyone else noticed this lag when not connected to monitors? I've made a habit of closing the DisplayLink application when just using the device in laptop mode, and it's still pretty laggy.

If I buy the Sonnet DisplayLink USB Type-A to Dual HDMI Adapter for m1 computers, and then run a type c to hdmi will it let me use the 2 display link and then the 1 free? That way I can have a total of 3 additional monitors? Please let me know 🤣

Nice video! Tried a usb to hdmi adapter today with DisplayLink Support. Worked great! Tho I am running 2 32" 4k moniters, and a satechi usb c hub. The screen that is plugged directly to the computer with an DisplayPort to usb c runs 2560x1440 and the one connected with usb a to hdmi with DisplayLink only runs 1920x1080. But hey, no point in complaining, right 🙂

Does it support audio out via display port or hdmi?

Hi! Is this only available via Targus or can I use other docking stations like a Dell docking station? It's not working for me so far, even though I've followed your steps. Your help is appreciated! Also, great video!

You need to check if your dock support Display link technology in specs.
