Add Three Extra Monitors to an Apple M1 Mac
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 дек 2020
- On November 7, 2020, Apple officially announced the new M1 powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13-inch, and Mac Mini. These systems use the Apple-designed M1 CPU, meaning that for the first time in over a decade, you can buy a Mac with something other than an Intel processor. Switching to a new chip with a new architecture can mean new performance possibilities.
One of the biggest changes to come with the new M1 Macs: a reduction in the number of external displays you can connect. No worries, in this video we'll show you how to add three external monitors to your new M1 powered MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

This is the best RUclips video that I’ve seen addressing this problem. Thank you.
Usually when people try to sell me stuff, I decline. But this here, I will definitely consider.
One of the best ads I've seen for anything. Compelling argument and appropriately short video.
If you have a tv with wifi (and Airplay 2 support) you can connect that one with the Airplay screen option (up 1080p) and another monitor with an usb to hdmi adapter for 4k or more. It works for me. Just discovered it. Macbook pro m1.
Wow. Just a really simple, straightforward video that sets the record straight. Thank you!
Thanks for putting this out there. It is good to know other accessories using thunderbolt.
Haha, perfect timing. Just ordered one. Since everything is pretty much heading into USB-C, this seems like a must-have accessory for any technology professional out there.
Can this man please explain every technical concept to me moving forward? Such a soothing and grounded presence. Definitely going to try this Plugable route with my M1 Macbook Air. Thank you!
Did your tests use the baseline 8GB RAM? If so have you also tested with 16GB of RAM? Did you see better performance? What configuration do you recommend?
This company has OUTSTANDING customer service. I'm literally communicating with the head engineer of the company for my questions and they answer them with impeccable detail! Would recommend
this is great. after watching so many videos of these bulky solutions with so many adapters, I came across this. this is a great ad. watched it, went on the website, did some additional research, and pulled the trigger.
How has your experience been
Is it possible to use any monitor in vertical position with these docking stations? 🙏🏼
Thanks!
Amazing video! THANK YOU FOR THE AMAZING INFORMATION!!!!! JUST WHAT I NEEDED !
I've been using the Plugable USB-C Triple Display Docking Station for awhile now and love it.
What do you have it connected to?
@@ElDavidC I've been using it with my XPS 15 9570
Thank you very much for this video. I really needed a dock. I chose the UD-3900PDZ, it will be the best for my new M1!
I need help. I can’t get my new Mac and the docking station to work on multiple displays
MacBook Pro m1
@@jeffhite3841 did you install the DisplayLink software?
@@jeffhite3841 Current MacOS releases are not supported yet. Only 10.10 to 10.13.3 are supported
Clear and concise. Thanks!
This is game changing!!!!!!!! Thank you!
Very simple, useful and straightforward information without having to wait 5 minutes of intro.
It's a smart solution, using the latest DisplayLink chips, but it's super strange you'd need this in the first place. I've used DisplayLink for years, but I wouldn't run any graphics-intensive work on it. It's more for productivity than anything. I'm surprised Apple has restricted the M1 Macs in this way considering they have full control over the SoC. Heck, I feel limited enough by nVIDIA and AMD's 4-monitor limit, but this is ridiculous.
Great introduction of the product
I bought this for my M1 Mac Book and works great. I used two extended monitors. But because snapping a window to the left and right to maximize my 4K monitors I had buy additional software. I thought Apple were productive work horses, back to Windows. Bought a Desktop with Nvidia 1660 Super with 4 outs. Windows in my opinion are better for Financing Professionals. And can game on it too! And to think I almost bought a new iPhone. I ran back to the apple Store to return it (you can return products up to 90 days as long as you say the software you need doesn't work correctly)!
Do you have tests with portrait orientation of the displays?
@Plugable When will you create a dock like this but with multigig ethernet? It doesn't have to be 10GbE but I'd like to see at least 2.5 or 5GbE in a dock like this and I'd say take my money! Then make a RUclips video on it and benchmark on my network while running triple screens.
I work for a church that purchased one of the M1 Mac Minis to run Pro Presenter 7. We have 3 video outputs (one is the main display for the computer, one is our lyrics/video output for Pro Presenter, and the third is the confidence lyrics monitor). we purchased the Plugable dock. It took me maybe 2 minutes to set it up. It works so well. We're very happy with it.
Hi Ben, I am now finding myself in what I assume is a similar situation to yours! I am hoping getting one of these will be the answer to our issues of not getting the three displays to work. Would you be able to recommend which unit exactly you bought? The first or second in the video or maybe another? Thank you very much!
@@JavierQ55 we have display port monitors. So I bought the plugable dock mentioned in this video that has DisplayPort connections.
I then purchased a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini with thunderbolt 3 for the third output.
Check out Churchfront’s recent RUclips video where they set up an M1 Mac mini. They had a similar setup, just a different dock.
@@BenChambless oh sweet! Their videos are great. Thank you so much🙏🏼
This is obviously awesome :0) can you make a dock that does 4K60 native + 2x 4K60 DisplayLink, and also provide full 20gbit/s USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 bandwidth, perhaps even some kind of way to combine the two TB3 buses to maximize the 80gbit/s bandwidth of the two ports through that dock? I'm just thinking out loud and wondering what some people might enjoy to use here :) I think it would be nice to "prove" that the DisplayLink overhead is actually quite low and perfectly supported natively on the M1 Macs, and to show basically that people shouldn't worry about the performance when using even 3 external displays with two of them DisplayLink, and that full 4K60 high quality video refresh rates are all supported, even with all HDR stuff maybe.
Thank you for reaching out!
Our UD-ULTC4K triple display docking station uses the DisplayLink DL-6950 series chip.
This chip currently supports 2x 4K @ 60Hz.
We hope to see additional 4K support in the future with Thunderbolt 4/USB4 docks.
What suggestions do you have for someone who is using your device and it initially displays 2 monitors (one in HDMI and one DisplayPort), but it later ignores the DisplayPort monitor. It doesn't which monitor is plugged in via DisplayPort, the M1 Macbook Pro does not see it.
Hi from Canada, I can't seem to find the HDMI docking station in the CA Amazon, can you tell me what will come close to that model?
What products do you have that will support over 3 displays on an M1 Mac mini? Perhaps 2 USB adapters? Thanks.
Now I finally understand why m1 macs cant connect multiple displays and why this solution works, THANKS!
Me Too😢
I need this!!
I have a plugable and love it. I didn’t realize I could Use one for a MacBook.

Does de UD-3900Z or UD-6950Z docking station work?
When will you bring out a Display Link product that will charge my M1 mac?
US doesn't seem to have USB-C 4K Triple Display Docking Station. Any idea when it might be back in stock?
But the new DisplayLink Manager drivers don't support rotation. An older version did, but it doesn't work with the M1.
sold, thanks
Can I connect four 4K monitors to m1 mac mini with this product?
Could I Potentially connect 2 extra monitors to my IMac 2021? Would the dock connectivity be the same? The setup would be similar to what you have here just the main IMac desktop would replace that screen in the centre, and the laptop would be necessary because obviously we would be using that IMac instead.
So if buy UD ULTC4K, will it works with MacBook Pro 13 M1, will be output to two 4K LG monitors. Will I have 4K at 60Hz on both monitors?
Will it work on clamshell mode for 2020 M1 MacBook Pro?
This works fine with the new iMac 2021 m1? Three 4K external monitors?

And is 8 RAM enough to be used in the development of Flutter applications? about 5 years? And I want to make the M1 a desktop with a 120Hz or 165Hz display, keyboard and mouse.. Will the 8 Ram have some problems? Or better to buy 16 Ram?
Hello. I have a PC with an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 video card connected to three monitors. I bought a 2019 16 inch Macbook pro and wanted to connect it to the same three monitors that are already plugged into my PC in a way that I could switch using those monitors between those two devices. Do you know what I need for this?
Outstanding. Do you have a docking with 3 4k at 60Hz?
Hello Marcelo, thanks for reaching out. We do indeed! We have a few products that will allow for three external, 4K displays on laptops, including M1/M2 Macs. If you'd like to know more, we would suggest reaching out to our product experts at plugable.com/pages/support with the model of displays you intend to use. Which hub should i buy to use 3 extended 2k Monitor (3 x Viewsonic VX3276-QHD) with my Mac Mini M1 2020? Thank you
The dock is no longer available. What else can we use for 2 regular HDMI monitors to connect to a laptop? Your other docks don't appear to support anything other than 4k HDMI and only have 1 port available. I would like to use your products to set up my desk, but I don't know how to do it with 2 HDMI feeds from my monitors. Help!
I have the UD-ULTC4K docking station with mac mini M1. I'm having a lot of trouble with set up of 3 monitors. (1)4k (BenQ) and (2)1080p monitors. Please help.
Can I use this with 2 lg ultrafine 5k displays with an M1 Mac?
Compatible with M1 Mac Mini as well?
Hi Gary, does it work with macbook air m1 on the MacOS Monterey without any other extra adapters?
What's the dimension of the table ? please
I purchased your USB-C triple 4K display dock and it was great, except I got mouse lag afterwards from a corded mouse. I connecting both displays via the HDMI ports. Keep in mind, one display was pushing a resolution of 1920x1200 and the other at 1680x1050, so I'm not sure why I got mouse lag. Unplug the dock and plug in one monitor natively mouse lag is gone.
I can confirm with the most recent displaylink driver update the issue still persists. Super annoying and this is with multiple docks/display adapters and mice.
We are sorry that you are experiencing that mouse lag. Please email support@plugable.com and we'd be happy to help figure out what's going on!
Does anyone know which monitor stand he is using to support the 3 monitors?
does pluggable for 3 monitors work with Mac OS Big Sur 11.2.3?
When is the kvm function going to added for those of us who switch computers back and forth all day?
For clarification a KVM is a very different device than the types of docking stations that we make. We do make some USB 3.0 switches, and have been looking at some USB-C switches, however we have not found one quite yet that suits the requirements we have for our customers.
I understand this is probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but I hope that was helpful nonetheless.
When you use it will you let you change display settings from mirroring the outside two monitors and each monitor has its own screen
Hello Jeff, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you would like to have your monitors extended. This means that each monitor can have a unique window/tab open. If so, then yes, these devices will allow you to extend to additional monitors. They will require the DisplayLink drivers to be installed. These can be found here: plugable.com/pages/displaylink We hope this helps!

I have a Macbook Air M1, and two Acer monitors (1080, HDMI, VGA). I have tried getting them to work using a small dock that connects to my laptop via USB-C and to the monitors via HDMI. I am not able to use both monitors as extended displays with my laptop lid closed in this configuration. Can you help?
can be used on a macbook pro 2012 model?
Thanks for video. Do you know when the USB-3 HDMI display docking station will become available to buy on Amazon. I just bought ordered the Mac Book Pro and find out it only supports one external monitor. Thank you!!
Congratulations on the new computer! We are aware that these docks are in high demand right now and though we do not have a timeline yet, we are working on restocking as quickly as we can. So just keep an eye out and hopefully you can order one soon.
I have Dell Dock - WD19S 130W can this work for dual monitor ?
hello I'm from Brazil. Good morning. I have a MacBook Pro M2, also a Dell Universal Docking Station - UD22, and a DH07 - Docking Station.
In total I have five monitors plus the MacBook.
Of the 5 monitors, three are working individually and two are mirrored.
These two that are mirrored, can I place them individually?
I would really appreciate it if you responded to me. Thank you very much.
Macbook air can connect up to 2 or 3 monitor 60hz?
Awesome Video! Sir can I ask you? Can use that setup to match my needs, I need 1 port for LED Screen, 1 for Stage Display, 1 for Atem Blackmagic TV Studio, 1 for TV monitor??

Thank you for asking. Mostly this would depend on what model computer you intend to use and what displays you intend to connect. I would recommend contacting us at Support@Plugable.com so that we can get you the best recommendations.
Is it possible to connect 3 monitors with a dock on one side and another 2 or 3 monitors on the other side with another dock? I'm planning on getting the m1 pro or Max
Thank you for reaching out! DisplayLink supports a maximum of four external displays on macOS and six on Windows systems. Please feel free to reach out to support@plugable.com for a recommendation. Thanks!
Hi, I have 3 4k monitors. I want a Mac mini m1 to connect to those 3 4k monitor & give me output of 4k. Will your products be able to do it. I don't want 1080p, I want 4k
I have a 2017 MacBook Pro but need 3 external monitors now, which of the docking devices is best for me. Thanks
Hello there, thanks for reaching out. We would strongly recommend reaching out to our product experts at plugable.com/pages/support with your monitor model number. They'll then be able to recommend a product (if available) for your setup. If you decide to reach out, be sure to reference this ticket number: 400955
We look forward to hearing from you.
Where can I get one?
I just realized my work laptop 2020 13" MBP Intel with 4 Thunderbolt ports only officially supports 2 external monitors. Hoping the Plugable docks/adapters can fix that for me. I've already tried other docks and adapters without success. I'd be ok bumping up to an eGPU solution, but hesitant until Apple supports those with Apple Silicon chips and also I need to wait for crypto to crash to get graphics cards at MSRP. So, I might be waiting a while on that path.
Thanks for reaching out!
We'd be happy to make a recommendation for your 2020 13" MBP.
Please reach out to us directly @ support@Plugable.com

Will this work on a Mac MINI?

Can you connect TV via HDMI with this port to watch Sky Channels?
Great video. It almost answers my question. I need to use propresenter 7 which casts to my projector which is the first display in my hdmi port. The second display I want to use is a monitor which mirrors my MacBook on a doc station through HDMI. Does this product support what I need ? Hope I explained myzeld
That is a good question and for the most part, I would say that this docking station should function for connecting the projector and the additional monitoring display. We don't have any experience with the type of software you mentioned as we primarily test these types of devices for general office use.
Thank you for sharing. I am using Mac Book Pro 2016. Can I still connect my laptop to two Monitors by using the same technique? Best,
Thanks for asking! Any of the docks shown in the video are compatible with Intel-based Thunderbolt 3 Macs, such as the MacBook Pro 2016. However, our Thunderbolt 3 docks are also an option for these Intel-based Macs (unlike M1 Macs).
Do you have any docks that support 4 external monitors for the M1 Macbook? Thanks!
Thank you for asking. We do not have a docking station that supports 4 displays at this time, but you should be able to add a DisplayLink USB 3.0 display adaptors to the docking station via it's USB 3.0 ports. I hope this information is helpful.
Just Great !!
Hey, it’s look good but how mach powr it’s take from the processor?
DisplayLink devices do use resources from the computer's CPU but the amount of resources DisplayLink uses is dependent on many factors. Everything from the resolution of the display, how many you have connected, and even how much visual information is constantly changing all affect the amount of processing power that is needed from the CPU.
For typical productivity software use, three 4K displays should work well but we do not recommend DisplayLink for any graphics intensive tasks such as gaming.
Has anyone managed to use 2 4K monitors running at 60hz with a scaled resolution of “Looks like 2560x1440” without any drawbacks?
Thanks!
Why type of port is the didplay port?
Anyone has any luck rotating a monitor vertically? Displaylink is not allowing me the ability to rotate my monitor. I am using a 13" MBP M1 Chip.
I purchased the Triple Display 4K Docking Station and I am unable to get the Displaylink to open. I have the MacBook Pro 13 with the M1 chip. I downloaded and installed the driver but it does not load when I click on it. When I click on the icon nothing happens. I uninstalled the driver and reloaded it with the same results. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
I have the same problem
Thank you for this great content. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2017 with touchbar. I tried to connect 3 full hd screens to a HP gen 5, that did not work, same accounts for adding 3 separate hdmi cables. Question; will this work with display link plugable device?
Hello there, thanks for reaching out! We do not expect there to be any issue attaching 3 screens using the products listed in the description of this video. Do note, the DisplayLink software will need to be installed. Guides and the download for said drivers can be found here: plugable.com/pages/displaylink
@@Plugable great thanks.
I have two 27” Apple Mini DisplayPort Screen connected to my Mac mini m1. One is connected with a Mini DisplayPort to usb c adapter, and the other is connected with a usb hdmi DisplayPort adapters. Sometime both screen are working, but most of the time the creen that is connected with the hdmi screen is flickering. Do you think that both monitors going work with this dock station?
Hello! We unfortunately have never tested with any Apple mDP based displays to verify compatibility with our various docking stations that offer DisplayPort outputs. However, on paper we would expect that these mDP Apple displays should work fine when adapted to full size-DP to use with one of our docks if using a quality mDP to DP adapter/cable. If you end up purchasing a dock and it does not work as expected with these displays you are more than welcome to contact us for support at support@plugable.com and we'll be happy to help. If the dock doesn't work out, if it's been purchased through one of our major resellers you should be able to return it for a full refund worst case scenario. Thank you and best wishes!
Can I see Netflix in the version via display link?
Can I open it with my apple watch when waking up from sleep?
Hi, I have an M1 Mac Mini and cannot get my 3rd monitor to work? I am using 1-USB C port to power my 34" samsung QLED screen (no problem), my older monitor which uses DVI was only able to work by using the HDMI -DVI on the mac mini which works (ever USB C to DVI adapter I tried would not work). Now I have a USB -C to displayport on another monitor that i was sure would work with the second USB C port on the mac mini and it IS NOT WORKING? Any idea why this is? simply put, I can't get any monitor to work using the usb-c port unless it's an extremely new monitor it seems.
Please help. I've tried everything to get a 3rd monitor to work via the usb-c port. Is there a difference between the 2 usb-c ports in the back?
Will this work with the Mac mini with the M1? Three screens would help immensely!
Yes
Would this still work on older generation MacBooks? For example other MacBooks that don’t have the M1 chip??
Thank you for reaching out! These USB-C docking stations would match great with any USB-C Macbook, Intel, or M1, with no issues.
Please feel free to reach out directly with any questions or concerns. Thanks!
Hello folks
Question. Can you please let me know which device (if any) would allow me to use 3 external monitors in my macbook pro M1Pro running Monterrey 12.4? Thanks
Thank you for asking. This video does outline two of the main docking stations that we recommend for adding three displays to any Apple M1 Mac. We are continuously testing these recommendations for updates and have found it does work with the latest Mac OS. One thing to note is that the M1 Pro should allow you to connect two displays directly to the computer. However, if you are looking for connecting three displays, this is still the best option with the fewest amount of connected devices.

For the UD-ULTC4K, is it possible to do one 3440x1440 @ 60hz, and two 1080p @ 60hz connections?
This should be possible as all of the display connections should support 3440x1440 @ 60Hz. Please have a look at the Specifications page for the UD-ULTC4K (plugable.com/products/UD-ULTC4K).
