Hi, first off love the channel. Second, Can you please check cpu and temps using these? I have one, from a different brand but it was warming my M1 air a lot especially when watching video which make sense as 60hz video would require a LOT of data for these virtual GPUs... I ended up stopping using this solution because of that, as I didn't like that my M1 was always warm to the touch and also undocking and redocking often ended up with the layout of the screens being screwed up and sometimes just resuming from sleep would do that as well. Would love to get your feedback on that plugable device CPU and temp when using them, probably just run a YT video for a while on your main air screen, then compare with one running on the DisplayLink one and I bet you'll notice quite a huge diff in both cou usage and temps of your macbook. It's not to say it's bad since the m1 is powerful, but it will tax some of that horsepower, especially if you enjoy running a video on the side while doing work, well, I suspect that will reduce the amount of power, especially when you do intensive 3D graphics like I do or video editing which also is resources hungry. Let me know, thx in advance.
It would be so much better if the m1 air supports 2 laptops directly. Not sure why it doesnt. Is this still the only way of getting two displays to the m1 air?
I have one Monitor conected via HDMI to Mac mini m1. The other monitor is connected via Display Port in the D6000 dock. After every reboot it doesn't detect the monitor connected to the Dock. If I take the USB C Cable off and reconnect, it works. Is there a way to resolve this issue?
I have exactly that hub and it works fine with my 2 FHD monitors, but the fonts are blurred and the overall graphics is really awful. However, it's not the adapter but the M1 and Big Sur not supporting external monitors as Windows 10 does. I'm really frustrated.
I agree, I recently switched from windows to M1 MacBook pro 13.. and the output quality on my external monitor is awful.. the difference is so huge. M1 macbook pro 13 is great if used as a laptop. but really poor as a workstation.
Call my cynical but it's likely by design. They break your legs and then sell your the crutches at apple. Bastards. I hate that I'm locked into the ecosystem, they're an abusive cult you can't leave.
A tip for everyone who has problems with multiple monitors. I currently use an Odyssey G9 monitor (5K@120Hz), an FHD (my pen display which is my second monitor) and, of course, the MacBook Pro M1 Max display, all with different desktops. I have already had the opportunity to connect a third external monitor 4K@60Hz 27". To achieve this setup I use a simple docking with an HDMI FHD, the 4K monitor in the notebook port and the ultrawide 120Hz in the usb-c port. I've seen, however, people using more than three monitors with different desktops!
I've connected two monitors but MacBook recognizes them as one. Basically, it's mirroring the same on both. How to adjust this, please? It's not in the settings, it only displays one monitor frame there, and there are two. Do I need any drivers?
If you connect a spear apple tv you may have to the 2nd screen thats all you have to do. Connected through the usbc cable natively and the other wirelessly through the apple tv.
After this finding this video, I ordered a Plugable Docking Station and it works perfectly for me. Nothing else I tried worked so I wasn't holding out much hope but it is literally as easy as the video shows. I was on the verge of ordering a Mac Mini because the dual external screens were necessary for my business (and hence a problem for me), so you've saved me a lot of ££! Thank you so much!
Nice, thanks for demonstrating this. You mentioned 3 and 4 external screens as well, does this support that too? All screens at 4k min 60Hz of course. Three would actually be enough for me, using “only” 2x 32” external 4k screens now, (not M1 an setup) for coding, but I plan to add a third 4k 32” screen.
I believe you can only do 2 x 4K screens at 4K resolution with DisplayLink, and maybe an additional 4K screen but at 30Hz. I can't remember the specifics but the Plugable website outlines all possible options with the different types of docks! If you're after 1080p it's much more lenient, you can do more than 3 screens.
@@CreatedTech Thanks I will look into. I am using two 32" 4k screens at 60Hz now, mounted on monitor arms, plus the laptop screen (on a stand, connected to an arm too), but I would prefer to put the laptop in clamshell mode and add a 3rd 32" 4k screen at 60Hz instead. And no, 1080p screens do not provide enough useful additional screen real-estate. With 32" sized screens I can use them at native resolution without zoom, ie at device pixel ratio 1.0. To do a setup with same screen real-estate as 3x 4k screens, I would need 12x 1080p screens! Not a very usable setup 😃
Now, is there anyway to get streaming services to work while on dual monitors? Hulu, etc., simply show up as a black screen. Audio is the only thing that goes through.

Hey love your videos! But I have a question and want to know your opinion. So I want to buy the M1 MacBook Air for college and I want it to last a long time preferably around 4-5 years. Do you think that a base M1 MacBook Air is enough for someone like me that only does homework, take notes, writes essay, watches RUclips, and movies?
after updating to monterey that dont work any more. My HDMI is dead. No matter if i use a dock or the hdmi on my macmini ;) the monitor is reacting as the "lights turn on" but the screen stays black and leaves the message "signal not found" so I think the signal is no longer transportet - I used caldigit hub no work - i used to cheaper "smaller" docks - no work. I used usb c to hdmi hubs to re-connect the 2nd external screen: NO WORK... so I hope for the 12.1. update... I cant work without 2 screen and i dont want to downgrade due to clean install -.-

Someone above mentions that because DisplayLink uses video capture to output to the extra screen, video services that have piracy protection (DRM) won't work as they detect the video capture and block the image.
Nice video, one question: do you need to set the MacBook to a particular setting on “what happens when you close the lid”? I.e “do nothing” etc? Thank you
I just created this setup with an M1 MacBook Air. Both displays connect successfully but applications like safari and chrome freeze and have the rainbow buffer wheel. The applications continue to run smoothly when the laptop isn’t connected to the external displays. Have any of you encountered this issue?
That does many other dock stations I using i-tec triple 4k, it have one native M1 Mac output via HDMI and two DP ports for 4k display link monitors or single 5k, have external sound card - headphone and microphone jack, five USB-A ports, one powered, one USB-C (only 5GBit/s, no video), LAN. 85W Power delivery. That native HDMI is great, you can use clamshell mode with single cable even you have to turn off DL driver to enable DRM video playback like AppleTV ...
thanks for explaining this... I have spent several hours trying to troubleshoot and now realize its a "feature" to encourage buying more expensive Macs
Great video. How about the purple / pink screen freeze issue? If I have an external monitor added and a mouse and keyboard through Bluetooth, it will get this crash every now and then. Without these it doesn’t have this crash. Whether it is the Bluetooth or the external monitor, or the combination of both, no clue.
I returned my M! TWICE because Apple said that was a machine fault. It clearly is a design issue - hardware or software i don't know, but my third M1 has not pink screen crashed in many months.
Keeping the mac connected to an outlet input is actually better than having your computer relying on the battery itself. The stress of the usage is going to be on the battery when not plugged in and when it is plugged in the computer will use the power from the outlet. The computer knows when it’s plugged in. It’s like giving a moment of relaxation for your battery to not worry about anything while the outlet is doing the work…

What is it about this plugable product that allows the M1 chip to push to two external monitors? I thought the limitation was because of the chip architecture itself. Is there something specific about the plugable device shown in this video that enables to two externals?

I use a Dell D6000 USB-C Displaylink dock for my M1 Macbook Pro. Not only can it drive three 4k displays it will also keep your macbook charged. One issue I've had though is sometimes you need to remove the USB-C and plug it back in again a few times to get the USB ports working on the dock... Not sure if it's just my macbook but it happens with all D6000's I have used so far. To me it's worth that tiny inconvenience, but if I could find another dock model that doesn't have the issue (and charges over USB-C) I'd probably buy it instead.
That ISB-C unplug/plug is not specific for your Dell dock station, it occurs with my i-Tec triple 4k too. There is some issue, when your macbook goes to sleep, when it wake up, it have issue with USB-C connected devices, I losing my external drive here and there. Same as I losing my dock station. Now it is better and Im not sure if it is some big sur update or my usage. Two months ago, I was using MBA in clam shell for weeks connected to dock all day long. Except that times when I had to replug my doc station, it was connected permanently. Now I using it often out of my desk, without any connected devices and problem is gone. I had problem with my M1 MacMini which lost external SSD once/twice per week and I had to reconect it.
Can this "workaround" stop working if Apple release any update that happens to break it? Also, I wonder if this single monitor issue is something that can be fixed in some future software update. Great content btw!
Will this correct the issue with the Mac Mini M1 dual monitor via HDMI? My Mini M1 works the monitor using USB-C to HDMI fine, but the second monitor connecting to the HDMI port on the back of the Mini turn off and on intermittently. This is very frustrating!

Connector HDMI to Displayport HDMI cable from Screen 1 to Connector and Displayport into Dell Dock HDMI Cable from Screen 2 to Dell Dock Thunderbolt Cable of Dell Dock to Macbook Pro M1 After doing all the above, it just give mirror images and don't extend all the screens. Can you please guide?
How about vertical mode compatibility on one of the screens with this setup?? I want to keep my current QHD Dell Ultrasharp as vertical screen (for coding), and then buy an additional 32" 4K monitor as my main for home office.
So what exactly happens if you plug in a monitor to each of the usb c ports? Because I remember explicitly reading on the apple website somewhere that you can connect a monitor to each of the thunderbolt 3/4 ports and it should work. Also what happens if you try and daisy chain over thunderbolt? I’ve heard m1 macs should support daisy chain over thunderbolt as long as all the devices are thunderbolt
What about an eGPU? DisplayLink works OK but if you can get an eGPU working it's a better solution. DisplayLink runs over USB and is pretty limited wrt to bandwidth.

Have no issues with Macbook Air and MacMini with M1 and MX Master or any Logitech wireless keyboard. Had some issues with Keychron keyboards and MacMini
@@jirikocmanis that with bluetooth or the dongle?
We use Dell D6000 Docks which support power over USB-C so only one plug required unless it's a 15" MacBook Pro.
I have ordered my Plugable docking station but I may have missed in the video once I plug everything in is there software I have to download?
Can you run three monitors in clamshell mode with that adaptor
Try with 50hz, it sharpened my display
This is great , but OMG why do we have to go to such lengths to do something that a lot of people want to do! Hopefully they fix this.
Do I need any drivers?
did you get this resolved?
@@dcramerecrypto No :(
Should this work for a Macbook Air M1 2020?
If you connect a spear apple tv you may have to the 2nd screen thats all you have to do. Connected through the usbc cable natively and the other wirelessly through the apple tv.
After this finding this video, I ordered a Plugable Docking Station and it works perfectly for me. Nothing else I tried worked so I wasn't holding out much hope but it is literally as easy as the video shows. I was on the verge of ordering a Mac Mini because the dual external screens were necessary for my business (and hence a problem for me), so you've saved me a lot of ££! Thank you so much!
does MacMini M2 also facing similar issue with 3 monitors docking station?
@@CreatedTech you can’t do 4K scaled down. Only 4K native or 1080p. It’s a software issue with the Mac OS from what I read on the displaylink forum.
@@TonyBiancoOfficial If you want 1080p you would buy the specific 1080p DisplayLink dock, not the 4K model so no need for downsampling!
Maybe someday Apple will add the ability to daisy chain Display Port. But certainly, don't hold your breath
Have you also tried a dual HDMI dongle method?
Now, is there anyway to get streaming services to work while on dual monitors? Hulu, etc., simply show up as a black screen. Audio is the only thing that goes through.
Thanks for the video. In your products you don’t mention which m1 this is. Does it happen to be a 2020 8gb? Would love to know how the load is for a machine like this, especially running videos and zoom calls
Who connects 2 monitors directly Yu the device? I’ve been using displaylink docks at home and work for several years
Have this been tested with an M1 iMac?
Could this support two monitors at 1440p 120 hz?
.Resetting smc solved my external display issue. Device - Apple mac m1 pro 2022, Ventura 13.2. Thank you
Brand new 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Unusable with external displays, particularly when playing video. When I connect to a display or tv via HDMI, the video playback skips around and produces no sound. Videos are unwatchable. Have you seen this issue as well?
You did not show right when you connect the cables and what to do then. I bought the Pluggable and am still only able to see only one monitor in my settings....
Did you have to download Displaylink software into your Mac
Hey love your videos! But I have a question and want to know your opinion. So I want to buy the M1 MacBook Air for college and I want it to last a long time preferably around 4-5 years. Do you think that a base M1 MacBook Air is enough for someone like me that only does homework, take notes, writes essay, watches RUclips, and movies?
Yes, it's more than enough. I have the 8GB and 512 memory and I use Illustrator and photoshop without any issues.
after updating to monterey that dont work any more. I used usb c to hdmi hubs to re-connect the 2nd external screen: NO WORK... so I hope for the 12.1. update... I cant work without 2 screen and i dont want to downgrade due to clean install -.-
I did all you are showing and the Drag & Drop (main feature for almost anything) was not functioning, it wouldn't release and the escape key is needed to release. Ready for this, Apple support just told me that on my MacBook Pro, M1 with ANY hub, or docking station that's not using a Thunderbolt cable - the drag and drop with have a problem. I call BS
Pretty cool.. Can you rotate the monitors view 270 while plugged this device? Only when I use thunderbolt the mac pops this window. Otherwise if plugged with satechi multimedia adaptar i can only use the dual monitors on landscape view.
only issue with display link is that is bloody doesn't support HDCP and there's no way to workaround
Isnt the issue actually it doesnt support dual monitor for NONE Apple monitors? I thought i read something like that?
Why the power adapter needs to be connected in order to be able to use clamshell mode?🤔
docking station is very expensive. Is there any less expensive similar kind of such docking station available?
Greet information. I have a MacBook pro M1 and 2 Apple studio monitors. Do you know if this will work with that combination? If not, do you know of anything?
I did exactly this and when I play video (Netflix, Disneyplus, RUclips TV), I dont get the video - just the audio. Anyone run into something similar?
Someone above mentions that because DisplayLink uses video capture to output to the extra screen, video services that have piracy protection (DRM) won't work as they detect the video capture and block the image.
Can you watch movies with this? Would they love not render as well?
No HDCP means no Netflix! :( It's a no for me
Nice video, one question: do you need to set the MacBook to a particular setting on “what happens when you close the lid”? I.e “do nothing” etc? Thank you
No mate, as long as your mac is connected to power you should be able to just close the lid with no issues
I just created this setup with an M1 MacBook Air. Both displays connect successfully but applications like safari and chrome freeze and have the rainbow buffer wheel. The applications continue to run smoothly when the laptop isn’t connected to the external displays. Have any of you encountered this issue?
I have an 24" Apple Cinema Display and an 27" Thunderbolt Display. Can I make these work with an M1 MacBook Air?
just bought the dell D6000 that works too (with the displaylink drivers installed). the D6000 will charge the macbook too
That does many other dock stations I using i-tec triple 4k, it have one native M1 Mac output via HDMI and two DP ports for 4k display link monitors or single 5k, have external sound card - headphone and microphone jack, five USB-A ports, one powered, one USB-C (only 5GBit/s, no video), LAN.
DisplayLink dock is not suitable for display fast-changing content like games & video, it’s suitable only for office tasks
Can I run programs like Safari from a External SSD drive ? and is it good ? or install mac os on drive.?
Great video. How about the purple / pink screen freeze issue? If I have an external monitor added and a mouse and keyboard through Bluetooth, it will get this crash every now and then. Without these it doesn’t have this crash. Whether it is the Bluetooth or the external monitor, or the combination of both, no clue.
I have a video on this topic planned to come out in the next few weeks!
@@CreatedTech Great, I’ll sure be on the lookout for it! Thanks for responding. Keep it up :)
I returned my M! TWICE because Apple said that was a machine fault. It clearly is a design issue - hardware or software i don't know, but my third M1 has not pink screen crashed in many months.
If we have to continuously keep the charger plugged in, won't it effect the battery keeping it in charge beyond 100%?
No, I made a video on MacBook batteries a few months ago that I recommend watching.
@@CreatedTech can you link? I can't find it, thanks
I love your videos
Keeping the mac connected to an outlet input is actually better than having your computer relying on the battery itself. The stress of the usage is going to be on the battery when not plugged in and when it is plugged in the computer will use the power from the outlet. The computer knows when it’s plugged in. It’s like giving a moment of relaxation for your battery to not worry about anything while the outlet is doing the work…
Most laptops including MacBooks are able to use only the outlet power when it’s charging, making it so no usage or wear and tear affects the battery
@@Averdein 100% battery is not great for its lifetime, but much better, than just use battery all day long. That charging cycles will wear battery much more than sitting at 100%. With optimized charging Macbook permanently connected to power supply after few days will start use 10% battery and then slowly recharge it to 100% each day. At least it occurs on my 99% time power connected MBA. I bught it at february and now it have 27 cycles. 100% capacity reported by MacOS, and something like 97% in Coconut Battery, but it changes every day. It reported 94% at end of May with just 13 cycles, month later I seen 97,2% with 24 cycles ...
I must be missing something, the m1 pro has usb c and a hdmi socket just like the mac mini.
Thanks for making this vid! This was exactly what I needed for mac MacBook Pro with M1 chip. You're a life saver!
The more peripherals the more battery drain it has. Mine almost last nothing.
What is it about this plugable product that allows the M1 chip to push to two external monitors? I thought the limitation was because of the chip architecture itself. I see multi-port devices for less money (for example I tried a “Viper” hub that had two HDMI ports, but it does not allow me to use two external monitors with my MacBook Air. Only one external works. Is there something specific about the plugable device shown in this video that enables to two externals?
It comes with DisplayLink support (there are a few other hubs that come with it as well). Then you’d need to install the DisplayLink software on your mac and it’ll be able to handle multiple screens.
can you log in to an M1 in clam mode from one of the screens? If you use an external keyboard with a fingerprint reader can you log in with your finger print through the external keyboard?
I have a Dell docking station and can show 3 screens (2 external ,1 on MacBook Air) however the 2 external are mirrored and I can't extend from the MacBook - what are the Display preferences I should choose, have tried mirror and extend from both MacBook and external display
did you get this resolved?
Pluggable UD-3900Z connected it to my MacBook Air M1 with dual monitor, when I am idle for 1 or 2 mins both monitors with mouse are frozen and not working.
So costly though ...
Can this "workaround" stop working if Apple release any update that happens to break it? Also, I wonder if this single monitor issue is something that can be fixed in some future software update. Great content btw!
It will stop working only if Apple will not allow screen capture for 3rd party SW.
Thank you for addressing this issue! This was my single biggest concern regarding the M1 Macs
Will this correct the issue with the Mac Mini M1 dual monitor via HDMI? My Mini M1 works the monitor using USB-C to HDMI fine, but the second monitor connecting to the HDMI port on the back of the Mini turn off and on intermittently. This is very frustrating!
Sweet - been looking for something like this for a while ❤️👍
And the mac mini ???? One on the 4k hdmi and one on the 4k displayport ?????
I have following gadgets :
1. Dell K20A001 Dock
2. Connector HDMI to Displayport
HDMI cable from Screen 1 to Connector and Displayport into Dell Dock
HDMI Cable from Screen 2 to Dell Dock
Thunderbolt Cable of Dell Dock to Macbook Pro M1
After doing all the above, it just give mirror images and don't extend all the screens. Can you please guide?
did you ever get this resolved?
I used pluggable. It has myrid of problems. Like I could not get Netflix to play on one of the screen. It was all blank!
Does connecting two 1440p external displays cause the M1 MBA to get hot?
Sorry for the oot questions, is it fine now to charge my macbook air m1 thru a dongle?
What if I have a 4k monitor and a 1080 monitor? Which docking station is needed to make both work?
How about vertical mode compatibility on one of the screens with this setup?? I want to keep my current QHD Dell Ultrasharp as vertical screen (for coding), and then buy an additional 32" 4K monitor as my main for home office.
now thats a good question
So what exactly happens if you plug in a monitor to each of the usb c ports? Because I remember explicitly reading on the apple website somewhere that you can connect a monitor to each of the thunderbolt 3/4 ports and it should work. Also what happens if you try and daisy chain over thunderbolt? I’ve heard m1 macs should support daisy chain over thunderbolt as long as all the devices are thunderbolt
Could you be in clamshell mode with an apple bluetooth magic keyboard and apple bluetooth magic trackpad?
does DisplayLink use screen recording? I've found that streaming services detect it and won't play vision,
what’s the monitor at 0:34? it looks so minimal and elegant :)
What about an eGPU? DisplayLink works OK but if you can get an eGPU working it's a better solution. DisplayLink runs over USB and is pretty limited wrt to bandwidth.
M1 Macs don‘t support eGPUs
UPDATE PLEASE
Is this the only way to get more than 1 screen on an Air? I have a caldigit TS3 thunderbolt dock already and am curious if that will work too.
