I have an old 2011 iMac that has a bad motherboard. I've been dying to find a way to get my old photos and videos from that old computer and hope this will work. Thank you for posting this!

So I have an issue with the Mac in target disk mode. It shuts down after about 30 minutes or so which makes it impossible for me to transfer larger files on my hard drive ☹️

Maybe it is a problem where your computer warms up and shuts down. Maybe a window air conditioner blowing cool air into the computer might increase your time to get those larger files? Just a thought.

I did what you instructed here and it works perfectly. Since my first computer will not get past the boot process but I can see it’s hard drive on my other Mac does that mean the motherboard is bad?

If the keyboard is USB it should work fine on the Mac without needing to load a driver. Keep in mind the Control and Command keys functions are swapped between Macs and PCs. Example: PC Save is Control + S keys, Mac is Command + S keys. You can also use and 2-button usb mouse. If you have a 1-button Mac mouse, hold down Control key and click to get other function menus.
I don’t think it was mentioned, but the oblong shaped FireWire cable is the older FW 400 and the more square shape one is the newer FW 800, in case you need to purchase a cable. OWC macsales.com and Fixit.com have some great how to videos as well.

Does it absolutely have to be a firewire 1394 cable? Can you use a USB to USB cable?
