  • if you're unable to boot to MacOS and need to recover your data or transfer you data, or empty space on your hard drive you can use Target Disk Mode.
    - You need to Mac Computers
    - Thunderbolt 2 or 3 or Firewire cables.
Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode
If you have two Mac computers with FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, you can connect them so that one of them appears as an external hard disk on the other. This is called target disk mode.
Note: If either of the computers has macOS Big Sur installed, you must connect the two computers using a Thunderbolt cable.
    Thanks for watching!!

I know this is a longshot but I have a older imac computer and tried this today since it no longer boots up. When I have it in target mode and connect to my other computer it kind of just crashes my newer imac I have no idea why is there any fix for this?

Hi, I haven’t tried it, but you will need Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter.
On early Macs, only FireWire is supported.
On later Macs, it's FireWire and Thunderbolt.
On current Macs, it's USB and Thunderbolt (or just USB in the case of a MacBook with USB-C instead of Thunderbolt).
Since you have an old Mac, you need to use FireWire for Target Disk Mode. Get an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter and connect it to the new Mac using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. You'll also need a FireWire 800 Mb/s cable.
      Hope this help. 😊

Thank you for this! I am using this video to do exactly as you showed on screen. I am curious if giving permissions of "read and write" will allow me to delete files to make space again so my old MacBook can boot back up as normal (since it crashed due to having no space left)?

Correct! It should. It’s another benefit to empty some space if your Mac running out of space. 😊

What if nothing comes up when you plug in the MacBook that is stuck on a boot loop? I was able to get it into target disk mode with the symbols on the screen, but when I plug it into the functioning MacBook, nothing happens. And yes I have checked and the cable itself works fine, as well as the ports I am using.

Thank you, this is very helpful. My iMac suddenly won’t boot up past the loading screen and I’m very worried about my data being lost.
So it seems my data is still there, and I can easily transfer it over to a friend’s iMac, to which I’ll connect an external HD? 🤔

@@magnet6332 mine is a late 2015 27-inch iMac. I tried with a senior Apple technician over the phone to re-install OS X (in recovery mode) and it failed to do so. No idea why 🤔
