God! I remember this!! I went to high school with Diana and this was when she was a sophomore (I think). She sang this song at the school talent show and she's LOUD!! It's a shame she didn't win American Idol.
This was on the show "America's Most Talented Kid." Diana came into American Idol as a 16 year old with a lot of confidence and experience, which definitely played to her advantage against the other 16-17 year olds. This goes to show that in AI age only plays a small factor, singing experience is a must, and I pity all the young contestants that haven't had much.
OMG!!! I totally remember this! She went to my high school and they made an announcement that she would be on AMTK. I was a freshman and she was a sophomore.
the quality of the vid makes it sound like she's growling throughout the whole song. and if she was 16 on american idol, she had to have been even younger here, she has an amazing voice
Those who think Diana oversang this should consider the fact that she was singing this song in the style of Whitney Houston's rendition, not the more subtle original by Dolly Parton.
Diana did a terrific job with this song. But the best version I have heard (besides Whitney's and Dolly's, of course) was done live by Quiana Parler, one of Clay's fantastic and incredible backup singers. She got such a resounding ovation you could hardly hear the last few lines of her performance. You can find it if you type in - Quiana Parler, I Will Always Love You Made everyone say in the audience: 'Whitney, who?'!
That was really good. The audio quality is bad in this video and thats why it sounds a little strange. She didnt try and copy whitney and thats why it sounds os different. Very good!
Both versions are the exact same lyrically, (afterall Whitney only rerecorded the song, she didn't rewrite it or add verses) they both start with "If I should stay, Well, I would only be in your way". Diana starts off the middle of the song likely to be able to emphasize the powernotes at the end for the short alloted time that she has onstage.
Ummm...no. She went to Shiloh High School in Snellville, GA. American Idol even came to our school gym when she got into the top 3. All the finalists went back home for like a week. Our principal, Dr. Kruscamp, gave her a jersey and we made fun of him because we told him his bald spot looked even larger on television.
totally agree with don't cry out loud...i was gonna put that on my second to last response but i ran out of space. but also, just because someone makes a song "their own", it doesn't necessarily mean it's good. she didn't do a good job with i will always love you. i'm sure you don't want me to infer that you think just cause she she nails other songs, that means she's not open to some rightful criticism on this performance, do you?
I couldn've even listen to the first few seconds, she made it to happy, the cheesy superflous music, her smiling all the way trhough it, NO! JUST STOP!
Well i partly agree and mostly disgree...first of all I've watched enough of Diana Degarmo's performances to know that she can't pull this song off. There are certain select singers who can but obviously never as well as Houston (used to). So are you disagreeing about the performance that we both saw as far as her interpretation?
yeah, it did sound like she aws gargling, lol - but I reckon it is just the video quality tho - but she does have a very vibrato boice - so it its 50/50 unless you have seen this performance on tv - which i havnt coz im in the uk :0(
na, whitney starts off soft and her voice gets harder as the song goes on...Diana was just hard the whole way through...so thats why ppl are saying that.
okay...i could have worded it differently but i still believe that she should not sing that song because she's not good enough...not at this point ne way...people like Tamyra Gray can pull it off 'cause she's phenomenal. So i'll rephrase it..if you're not amazing, don't sing that song.
but that one performance shouldn't affect your opinion of other performances. and no, i don't think she did well period. i don't consider belting out every note in the song and doing poor runs in the process a good performance. and i have to say...every artist who do covers are bound to some criticism when singing someone else's song. this is no different.
whitney herself sounded really "over-the-top on some of her performances. opps i'm being nice - i meant almost all! i did not like it at all because it always felt like whitney was having a seisure - listen to her performances of "greatest love of all" - every single year she sang it, she faltered. what's wrong?! i rather listen to her cd thank you very much.
lol how weird...i wish i would have watched this then maybe when she went on american idol i would of remembered her...haha this is so weird good though
That's where you and i differ. i dont think she sang it well period. just because someone has good intonnation and can belt out notes, that doesn't make them a good singer right off the bat; it's just a great advantage. Overall i thought this performance was very over-the-top and meaningless. She has moments of greatness andlots of potential but even now she lacks a lot of depth in the way she sings. You and I will never agree on this because you thought she did well and i didn't.
She is awsome and she have an incredible voice, wow.
she was one of the few girls to give me goosebumps when i hear her sing
she is always amazing!
i love her voice !!!!
she is amazing! so ppl who don't like her. who cares? she is on broadway! Brooklyn! WOO! go diana!

This was an interesting performance. Cuz I have never heard it sung like this. Very well done. Excellent.

Diana DeGarmo is a pretty good singer Damn she can blow,
that was like really good...i loved it!

Diana DeGarmo is my fav female AI finalist / runner-up
this doesn't seem to long before she was on american idol it must have been like a year or two before american idol! she's awesome!
Really? I didn't think that was possible! Diana is SO great! I am almost scared to ask who you DO like?..
I LOVE THIS!
good im not the only one who thinks this. its like hes on everyshow i turn on now!

Yeah, and Jessica Sierra and David Archuleta were both on Star Search
Aww, she's so cute. Does anyone know how old she was when this was filmed? The show is America's Most Talented Kids, right?
goosseys:) amazing :)
mind i REMIND u guys that she was FIFTEEN when she sang this? can u sing this good when u were 15? if not, keep ur criticisms to ur selves.
That was really good. The audio quality is bad in this video and thats why it sounds a little strange. She didnt try and copy whitney and thats why it sounds os different. Very good!

true :)

Lance bass...AMTK stand for America's Most Talented Kid then? Did she win?
I couldn've even listen to the first few seconds, she made it to happy, the cheesy superflous music, her smiling all the way trhough it, NO! JUST STOP!

haha...weird how two american idol contestants were on this show (her and Jordin Sparks)...i bet that next year there is gonna be another
p.s..you think i don't get YOUR point? looks like the feeling is VERY mutual.
yeah, it did sound like she aws gargling, lol - but I reckon it is just the video quality tho - but she does have a very vibrato boice - so it its 50/50 unless you have seen this performance on tv - which i havnt coz im in the uk :0(
she looks the exact same as she does now
na, whitney starts off soft and her voice gets harder as the song goes on...Diana was just hard the whole way through...so thats why ppl are saying that.
i know i know iknow
dude its the recording.
good for dolly. she still sounds country.
What the heck did that other girl do to beat her??
WOW she can really sing. Too bad she isn't that big a name.
Against jojo? oh God, I love her too :P
where'd the melody go? unless you're absolutely amazing like whitney, don't even try
cuz he cna't act but will sleep with the producers to get work...he's the latino ryan seacreast
okay...i could have worded it differently but i still believe that she should not sing that song because she's not good enough...not at this point ne way...people like Tamyra Gray can pull it off 'cause she's phenomenal. So i'll rephrase it..if you're not amazing, don't sing that song.

It's a pity for the sound :s
I prefer Diana Degarmo than Fantasia Barrino
lance
she can sing, but certain songs is not made for her voice. if i didn't know the song, i would have thought that was a country song.
whitney herself sounded really "over-the-top on some of her performances. opps i'm being nice - i meant almost all! i did not like it at all because it always felt like whitney was having a seisure - listen to her performances of "greatest love of all" - every single year she sang it, she faltered. what's wrong?! i rather listen to her cd thank you very much.
She looks nothing like she does now!
Def not her best performance, i'm agree.
lol how weird...i wish i would have watched this then maybe when she went on american idol i would of remembered her...haha this is so weird good though
thats sick. no one should be singing Whitney's songs but The Voice herself, Whitney Houston
That's where you and i differ. i dont think she sang it well period. just because someone has good intonnation and can belt out notes, that doesn't make them a good singer right off the bat; it's just a great advantage. Pure Sh...
Diana sucks. She ruined Celine's "Because you loved me", and she ruined Whitney's "I will always love you". Over-the-top and over-rated.
That was NOT good sorry...
That was horrible!
