Every home, and especially apartment, with a cat should have something similar to this, a built in little litter box room. It’s 2020 and we still don’t have a good spot for litter boxes.

I used to have cats and dogs. Of course the dogs wanted to not only eat the cats food, but also eat their poop. Someone down the street was remodeling their kitchen , so I salvaged a 3-door base cabinet. I pushed the base cabinet up against a wall, that butted up against a wall in my laundry room. I bought a "cat" door at the pet store. What made it a "cat" door was that it had a magnetic latch on the lower part of the door, activated by a mouse shaped magnet that went on the cats collars like a rabies or name tag. Only the cats, (with the magnets on their collars) could activate the latch on the door. I jigsawed out the panels on the base cabinet doors and stapled screen over the openings. I kept their food at one end, and their litter box at the other end. Cleaning the litter box and feeding them happened from the garage side. I left my garage door open most of the time I was at home except after dark and in the winter. The cats spent most of their time in their "veranda" enjoying being outside. It was a great solution to not have the mess and smell of the litter box inside my house. When the house was sold, the buyers had 2 cats and thought the system was ingenious. If you're seriously thinking of doing that you need to clean the litterbox WAY WAY WAY more often. If even a human can smell it, it would be awful for a cat with their much more sensitive noses to have to go in there. And they even have to step in it.
Why do every cat Owner and non-cat owner feel the need to tell another cat owner that they'll need to clean their litterbox out more often? Don't you think they know that?
The thing is .. your litter should be in the most commonly occupied room of the house. Where ever that is .. for me its the office .. most families its probably the living room. I see this stuff and then ppl complain about inappropriate peeing ..
I know cats can see through the dark at night. But just to be safe, in case you turn all lights off during the night, you should put a small light inside the cabinet for the cat.

That you would go to the trouble to do this for your pet cat, makes you a very nice human. Lucky cat that you guys are his/her "family." Also, really liked your upgrade to the old metal gate you did with the stained wood. Big improvement. Thanks!
What a great idea. And, for the cat that likes to frantically dig and make a big mess (EVERY cat), it keeps the liter contained. We always have liter everywhere, despite out best efforts to keep it contained. Bravo DIY
A trail of catnip into the space probably would have worked, too. Very nice job. And, btw, as someone who's been in cat rescue for 15 years now, I'd highly recommend you wash down walls inside with soap and water about once a week. Invisible droplets of urine rise up and get into walls. Over time, the space could well start reeking of urine even though you have some ventilation with door and top part of acrylic. I learned this the HARD way by having my drywall start smelling of cat urine even thought my cats were using the litter box and not peeing on the wall/drywall.
This is an awesome idea for a litter box. I love the way he was so patient with his cat to introduce it to the space without forcing it. And because of that the cat loved it. Well done 🐱 Edit: typo
I’m so glad this popped up in my video feed bc I’m moving to a new house and could not decide where to put my cats litter. We have a couple of cabinets in our laundry room and this would be a great solution for us. Great idea
I once accidentally made an in-cabinet litter box. I'd set a large plastic bowl of sorted dry beans in a bottom kitchen cabinet, intending to soak and cook them. Before I got to them, my Siamese kitten found the old cabinet door was easy to pull open, and he'd happily used what he assumed was his second litter box. All I could do was laugh. Poor little guy was frustrated when we installed magnetic closures to keep him out. Great idea to create a small 'room' for litter setup. 👍
My house has laundry machines in a closet in one of the bedrooms, there’s still plenty of closet space next to it but I use that room as a den and put a covered litter box on a table to keep the dog out. I like not having to bend down to clean it, and the table is big enough for extra litter and a bag of food in a sealed container as well as a small lined can for box debris. Closet has 4 sliding doors on a track so I just keep one from closing with a block of wood. I have a bathroom mat in front of the box but she still manages to spread litter onto the floor.
Nice job 👍 My litter box is in the basement, but as the cat ages and can't do the stairs as well (or gets kidney problems and has to go more frequently) this will be a nice alternative to keeping the box in the bedroom. I keep a laundry hamper in the bottom hall closet, that can go anywhere else and that spot is perfect for something like this.
Well done this is a great idea, all I would add is a little sensor light, but thats because its my cats preference (or mine 😁). Gus' own private bathroom 😎
Gus is such a cute kitty. Also, I liked how you did a test run with the door on the left, then installed it with the door on the right :P I thought he was going to get so lost!
He likes it! That corner box is perfect! I was thinking of doing this too but my cabinet isn't big enough so I converted a big old plastic toy box into a cat box. Works great! 👍 When I move, I want to make one like yours. Thanks for the great video.
This is perfect for the NY’er who lives in a 20 sq. ft. apartment. When I get my own place, I’ll probably be doing this task in a similar fashion. Thx.
I'm a pet sitter and one of my clients had a similar setup. They had the little door built into their laundry room closet. It sounds good in theory, but what happens is the humans forget to clean the pans. Out of sight, out of mind. At least yours is visible, and not so easily forgotten.
Yup , Im a shover .We had a few cats all of them jumped right thru the opening, but my one boy just wouldn't go thru .So he got gently shoved thru it .No problems once that he knew it was safe .
I have done this for years. Had a pantry cabinet made with a hole on the side for the cat to enter the bottom of the cabinet to access the litter box. When I was renting apartments. When I bought my own home I cut a door hole into the basement door, put a rubber flap on it and the cat went down there to use the litter box. Personally, I would not have made a transparent cat door. No one wants or needs to watch the cat go potty. It's fancy but not necessary when you could have just cut a little kitty door at the bottom of the existing doors. Plus cats like enclosed cubby holes. Your workmanship was great though.
Cats actually like to be able to see outside of their litter box, so they can run away in case of danger. Cat whisperer/therapist Jackson Galaxy talks about this too.
@@sweetcanada17 Yes and that's why they spend all their time in boxes and paper shopping bags, totes and closets because they like transparent walls around them so much. lol not
Whisperwoman - when cats defecate/urinate they are at their most vulnerable and prefer to do it where they can easily see what’s going on around them. Please don’t quote me any anecdotal evidence, which pales in comparison to the findings of cat therapists. My cat was having behavioural problems, and refused to pee and poop in her closed litter box, and once I changed her litter box to an open one, everything changed for the better. I was willing to learn from cat behaviourists. Playing and hanging out in boxes and paper bags cannot be compared to the time they spend in their litter boxes.
@@sweetcanada17 Actually that would be you quoting anecdotal evidence from cat whisperer. I guess you have a short memory. And because your cat had issues with a new cat box you introduced to it does not mean all cats do. Nor does it make you an expert in any way to be on here thinking you can lecture and spouse your bullshit to strangers on the internet.
Bravo DIY
My favorite part was the drill with the light on it !!! Brilliant !!
What a little cutie !! Gus is adorable.
You certainly have the materials AND tools. Excellent job.
Love how he got in there with the kitty to show him hey this place is for you
This a nice video on how to put cat liter indoors. You are a handy and skilled guy just like my father.
This man entirely fits his whole body into that extra unused cabinet
My first time seeing your channel your a genius i wish i had a spot like this for my cat
What a cute video. There is nothing sweeter than to do something sweet for your pet. Love ❤️ it
Ingenious! 😾😻🐱
I wish I still lived in my Childhood Home, I'd give it a try. 😺🛠🗜📐📏✏
Private, clean, & safe for Gus to relieve himself.💗
Such a great idea and very well done. Glad Gus likes it!
Hi Ben! Looks great and i have been been loving all these cool update videos! Thanks for the unique content
❤️
GENIUS!!! also great that you placed the doorway on the side he seemed to prefer :)
Nice job. That is the perfect litter box area. The kitty comments were hilarious.
Did anyone else find it oddly satisfying when he hammered down the claps?! 🧐 Because I love it! 😳
This is an awesome idea for a litter box. I love the way he was so patient with his cat to introduce it to the space without forcing it. And because of that the cat loved it. Well done 🐱
Edit: typo
Omg I love this!! Such a good use of some dumb inefficient space! 😂😂 You are very skilled with your tools!
Hes got AirPods in he cant hear us
Mafnet , he can’t hear us cause he’s listening to kidz bop

2:52 that bug wanted to see what was up!
Wow, this is amazing... I had my doubts about the floor and you fixed it and gave him an even better box! Well done!!
I love the idea of a transparent door!!!! thanks!! I saved your video for the day when I will make my own litter cat box !!!Thanks!!
That’s a prefect litter box shape and the little room is next to the bathroom room nice 👍 hope the little guy enjoys it
Nice job 👍
My litter box is in the basement, but as the cat ages and can't do the stairs as well (or gets kidney problems and has to go more frequently) this will be a nice alternative to keeping the box in the bedroom. I keep a laundry hamper in the bottom hall closet, that can go anywhere else and that spot is perfect for something like this.
Wow, this is a really clever idea!!!! This is how our cats were when we made a kitty door to the back porch, lol. This is so sweet!!!
Just wanted to see the top air vent house left. Nice going for Gus and family!
Well done this is a great idea, all I would add is a little sensor light, but thats because its my cats preference (or mine 😁).
Gus' own private bathroom 😎
Not sure why this popped up in my feed but I’m subscribed as this guy is my dream guy
What an awesome solution!! Kitty seemed to take to it really well! I love my Litter Robot for my two boys!
All houses should come with a "kitty cabinet"! I like your use of the space.
This is perfect for the NY’er who lives in a 20 sq. ft. apartment. When I get my own place, I’ll probably be doing this task in a similar fashion. Thx.
Cats where they aren't supposed to be: I like it
Cats in a place you've made for them: I don't like it
I'm a pet sitter and one of my clients had a similar setup. They had the little door built into their laundry room closet. It sounds good in theory, but what happens is the humans forget to clean the pans. Out of sight, out of mind. At least yours is visible, and not so easily forgotten.
Hmmmm. Excellent idea. Even cutting a tall cupboard in thirds. Especially like the acrylic front panel... 😎💚
I did a similar build but added a battery powered motion wall light. It's dim tbh, but provided some illumination that wasn't disruptive.
Very cool...I would love something like that for my babies...Gus is a lucky boy!! 😻
What a great idea. My baby girl would love this.
I think he’s going to enjoy the back scratch he gets when going thru the opening.
Awesome! Lots of love went into the litter box unit! You rock dude! Your cat luvs you!
That's a HUGE cabinet! I cant fit into any of our cabinets 🤔😂😂 I am jealous of your cabinet space!
You, sir, are so so talented!! What a fabulous idea!!
You litterally have the perfect spot that was already made to put a litter box in! So lucky!
This is great! We have a creepy under stair space that I'd love to open up and convert into a litter box area
That was flipping BRILLIANT!!!!!!
When I put in a cat door I just shoved my cars thru the hole the first go around. They figured it out
How did you manage to fit your cars through the cat door?
@@666snowwhite1 suck it trebek
@nevaeh peanut I tried, wouldn't work. Dumbasses ran around to the other side of the house when I put a treat thru the door looking for it.
Yup , Im a shover .We had a few cats all of them jumped right thru the opening, but my one boy just wouldn't go thru .So he got gently shoved thru it .No problems once that he knew it was safe .
shoved cars???🤨🤔 don't you mean Cat? unless your cat owns a car?
Your experience or lack thereof is evident in trying to dismiss where cats spend the majority of their time vs a few minutes. Nor does it make you an expert in any way to be on here thinking you can lecture and spouse your bullshit to strangers on the internet. Your grandiose self -importance and condescension is not attractive it's just arrogance. Go back to your unhealthy obsessing about your cat and stop trying to push your dime store ideas on me, I am not buying it.
THIS WAS AWESOME!! So well done. Good job training the baby to the new space, Dad ;-)
Brilliant! I was thinking of doing my little space under my stairs in the same manner but I thought it might not work or would be weird. Now I know. Its fabulous!!!
Wow this man is talented . And loving to the cat X
Love this! Gus is one lucky boy. I wished I had a space that this would work! Thx u
He has his own bathroom, more private aswel ,sure they deserve that,so adorable and intelligent 👍😸
And some kitty tp & maybe some reading material. 😸🐾😻
Best kitty privy, ever!
Came for the cat, am glad I stayed. Because I saw more of the cat.
What a great idea. I don’t have a closet like that , but I think I’m going to designate one side of the sink cabinet for my 🐈.
THE BEST IDEAS EVERRRRRRRRR!!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 I now know what I'm going to do with a bottom cabinet that has turned into a junk holder.... I just need to extend it out long enough. Seeming as my cats have a long litter box and literally do not share ends, haha! Yep, one uses one end, one uses the other, but neither uses the others end! Well... At least that's the logic I'm going to use in order to get extra counter space in the bathroom and still have room for the box, hahahaha!
Nice build! I would use some of the space over the litter box for extra storage, like cat litter and such.
God damn. All that work for a cat. Now that's love 👍
