If you're going to hang something over still live electrical wires, you should add a cover plate over the electrical box. They're like $1.50 and will make the whole thing so much more safe!
A proper cover might even be required where you removed the light fixure, either by National Electrical Code or more local addendum. Regardless, it is a smart move for safety. What you have there now seems to fit the definition of a junction, even if it is no longer powered. A junction must be enclosed in a covered box, and it must not be drywalled over or enclosed by wall finishing. Please get the correct cover and install it or have an electrician do it. Your artwork will hide it nicely, and that is permitted.
Soaking cane is actually the way traditional baskets and weaves are made. My mom used to make some and I did once too! Always so much to learn from artisans.
Don’t know how much space Lottie needs when she’s inside, but maybe you could put a shelf inside the cabinet at the very top and keep any cat related items there. Like the scoop for the litter. It would be the cat central cabinet!
What a cute hack! So you asked about the wall color I would definitely leave the wall color not sure about the cabinet because it kind of blends in with the wall but if that was what the objective was that it didn’t stand out then you accomplished and it looks really really good. It still looks really really good whether that was what she wanted or not I just think the cabinet that you made that’s really cute just kind of blends in with your wall.
Maybe I would have used a picture frame for the "entrance/exit" instead of the trim so that it looked 👌. Also, just as Alexandra did with other IKEA cabinet this one would have looked great with an additional wood on top. Loooove the colour.
Cat mom heads up: i bought that top open litter box two yrs ago bc it’s cute as far as litter boxes go and my cats refused to use it. All cats are different and im sure lottie uses hers but just a had up in case anyone else is considering buying it. Love that you’re going all out to make kitties WC stylish, Alexandra 😸
I love how versatile the Ivar line is. I have the shallower cabinets in my kitchen as upper cabinets, a huge shelf system in my office, I’m using one of the bookshelf units for basement storage, and I “made” a wardrobe by attaching the deeper Ivar cabinet and the chest of drawers and adding legs, which is now my pantry/tool storage. And I just cut one of the extra shelves down to size to replace a missing shelf on my bar cart. First time I’d used my circular saw! I guess what I’m saying is we stan Ivar in this house. Good job with this hack!

You could try lightweight curtains over the opening and see if Lottie likes it. Maybe use a tan linen so it flows with the look of the cane on the front of the cabinet. Also a curtain would help minimize smell.

Personally I'd also paint the vent cover up top to make it 'disappear'
I don't have a cat but this looks like a great hack. My only question is the placement of it. If you aren't placing it in a bathroom, wouldn't it be better to have it further away from the kitchen? I guess I just can't imagine preparing food and having any potential smells wafting into the food prep area. Perhaps a cat person can enlighten me and there are ways to ensure that the smell doesn't travel but just on a basic level, I would've thought that having it so close to the kitchen and/or living room where you relax, perhaps wouldn't be ideal?..
There’s really no way to prevent smell, especially since it’s s open (door + see thru caning). There are deodorizers that kind of cover or mask the smell. Really, very frequent clean is the best bet. My cat has an enclosed box with a door and honestly you barely ever smell it. I’d be more put off by the sound and idea of them scratching away in my living room/kitchen area. In my condo I’ve only ever kept them in a washroom or den away from those spaces.
@@okanaganblonde4095 Thanks for the info. That makes total sense that it would be super challenging to limit the smell with the openness of the litter box she designed. I've contemplated getting a cat a few times especially during lockdown but always felt like the only logical place to put a litter box would be in my bathroom, which is already cramped quarters so wouldn't work that well. I think this just confirms that I'm going to wait until I'm in a house with more space and ideally a completely separate bathroom to put a litter box in.
If your cat buries its waste properly and you empty it everyday, you should be fine. They also make deoderizers but some cats have sensitive skin and they can lose hair and dander everywhere. It's not pretty for the cat or your house. Also, if your cat's waste smells really foul, they probably need their diet tweaked and/or a trip to the vet. I might also add a removable mat underneath to collect litter and any accidental drips so that I cold easily shake it into the trash and wipe it down on occassion
Put a chenille microfiber rug in front of the litter tray inside the cabinet (and another on the floor in front of the entry, if you can stand it aesthetically). The kind with the shaggy “fingers.” They are the best litter-trapping mats ever.
Next time you should mitre the corners of the trim… Would look a lot better 😉. Also, I agree with your original thought….I think that wall should be white to make your space flow better. Although I love the colour, you are correct, it breaks the space and stops the eye.
Got this idea from you for my apartment! We bought an ikea cabinet with open shelving on the top that serves as our bar and the cabinet on the bottom holds my kitten's litter box with an extra shelf in there for litter and extra food. Everyone who comes over asks where her litter is and are very impressed by the hidden litter idea :)
@@emeraldfernandez5010 Plenty of room for my cat to move around as its a large cabinet and it is ventilated, I'm aware of Jackson Galaxy but thanks for the reminder lol
Looks really cool! I never thought of using cane webbing for a concealed cat litter box, but what a nifty hack serving at least two purposes (venting the inside of the cabinet being the one thing I'd definitely have forgotten about). So yeah, it's pretty awesome. I also think it looks great in your apartment. Did you change the litter box for an open one, though? My cats always throw the litter around, so I actually have a box like the one you showed in the before. Would that box still fit in the cabinet?

Next time you should mitre the corners of the trim…
Would look a lot better 😉. Also, I agree with your original thought….I think that wall should be white to make your space flow better. Although I love the colour, you are correct, it breaks the space and stops the eye.
Lol, can you just see Alexandra doing the mitre with her utility knife...
I would love to see you do a moody dark looks. It looks so warm and emotional.

☝☝☝YOU’RE DOING CAT LITTER WRONG & Here’s Why -
Jackson Galaxy
@JacksonGalax
@@emeraldfernandez5010 Plenty of room for my cat to move around as its a large cabinet and it is ventilated, I'm aware of Jackson Galaxy but thanks for the reminder lol
Which cabinet? I want to stick a stainless steel litter box inside and this Ivar one is too narrow lol
@@nikkibrittain I can't remember/find the exact one but its similar to Havsta or Lommarp from Ikea
I can't decide if I love this for the cool project OR you singing to your cat! 🙌😹

It’s beautiful. This would be great if your cat doesn’t throw litter EVERYWHERE.
So true, can you imagine guests over and litter just starts shooting out of the cane doors.
Yup. Also slight concern of odor buildup on cane. Dust bc of the grid pattern
@@MaeV808 You can just like the inside of the cabinet seal the cane. They also sell sealed cane. Guess it would be an option for this particular project
Beautiful job Alexandra! Love that color 🥰👏👍
I'm a bit late watching this but absolutely love it and has given me an idea of a wall for my tiny hallway and that will include Hacking a cupboard, thank you so much for your free design ideas
I can't get a cat until my allergic daughter moves off to college in two yrs... But I will definitely be using a hack like this when I get a new kitty! It's so beautiful!
Worth considering that particle board seems to absorb a LOT of ammonia after a few months use. I made a very similar one and had to discard it because it stank even after cleaning
Love it , have you considered painting the vent the color of the wall.
You don't want the dog in there. They look at the litter box as a tootsie roll dispenser. Lol
Ewwww lol
So cute! Love the arched design
