    Made this the other day - we have 3 cats. Didn’t put in the cat door just cut a square entrance. Our litter tray and mat fitted perfectly. We made 2 and sit them next to each other on our balcony. Absolutely perfect! They have used it with no issue, I think they feel safer. No litter on the floor either. This has solved the issue of the balcony area feeling like the cats toilet. Now you wouldn’t know it’s there!🎉

    This is the absolute best version I’ve seen of a DIY hidden litter box. I love that the primary focus is the cat’s comfort and wellbeing. I think my cats would use this without protest because it’s airy and big enough to not feel claustrophobic. Also, how much better does that look than a plastic litter box on the floor? This will give me more options for putting the litter box where it’s comfortable for the cats without the humans having to look at the cat’s toilet. 10/10⭐️

    I had this exact box setup for years - retired it when we lost our second to last cat about 3 years ago…
    It’s amazing for spaces where you need multiple boxes but want it to look less ‘crazy cat lady’ ;)
    We made ours when we had 4 cats, and it worked amazingly!!
    It just wasn’t working when our second to last boy died, he was a pretty big boy ( around 12 pounds) and it was great for him and his brother - and even for our older ladies up to a point…
    Now we only have one Old lady left and she isn’t able to get into the big box anymore, so we just wanted it to be accessible to her ( she is 16,5 years Old and a tiny 4 pound Persian ;) so we’ve made her a low to the ground open box with low sides, that works for her!

    • @MicolAndOtherAnimals
      @MicolAndOtherAnimals  3 года назад +6

    • @talon7132
      @talon7132 3 года назад +1

      That's the smallest Persian I have ever heard of. I at one point had 2 black Persians Loki and Voodoo. Loki passed in a house fire. Voodoo had to be put down at 18yrs old , but weighed 28 pounds. Granted most of her weight was hair but still your furry child seems small to me.

    • @sabinahertzum9728
      @sabinahertzum9728 3 года назад +2

      @@talon7132 she is not even the smallest I’ve had!! Her mother was usually around 3 pounds…
      But even though they are small they both lad babies without any intervention ;)
      The old lady I have now ( Dizzy) was born here and is gonna live her entire life here!
      We rescued her mom from a family member, and found that she had no breeding restrictions - so I contacted the breeder to find out what the line was all about and thought I would go in to breeding and showing!! Linda was a tricolor in blue/cream/white and beautiful deep orange eyes…
      We found a great farther and ended up with the smallest litter of one!!! That one was Dizzy…. She is crème smoke and those deep orange eyes!!
      She showed until she went into her first heat - then I pulled her because she didn’t enjoy it anymore!!
      Both Linda and Dizzy were ‘r@ped’ - a tomcat actually made a hole in their enclosure to get in to them!!
      They gave birth within 2 weeks…
      We kept a kitten from each litter, a black boy with deep orange eyes - and a red tabby with the same eyes…. Both grew to around 12-14 pounds and looked more like British shorthairs than Persians ;)
      Unfortunately the black one got a rare type of cancer in the blood- and we threw everything at it - he was admitted for 3 weeks - but unfortunately he didn’t make it… he lives to 9 and was a GREAT cat!!
      His half brother lives to 11 and died of a heart attack at home
      Oh - Linda died of old age at 15…
      Here in Denmark we don’t breed Persians really big - a normal breed standard female is 6-9 pounds….
      Dizzy was around 6 pounds when she was younger, but the last few years she doesn’t move around that much anymore and don’t have as much musclemass as she used to…. She is not skinny, and has access to food 24/7… so her 4 pounds is just because she is old ;) and fat weighs less than muscle ;)

    Great build! I would like to make one myself. FYI, as a long time pet sitter, the World's Best is a fantastic litter. I've found that if you have a big container like the one that you are using, put about 3/4 of the 15 lb. bag in and add a scoopful now and then to keep it up. Try it and you won't be sorry. No scraping it off the bottom or the scooper anymore.

    Just to note, (my cat has cistitis and i worry too much about his comfort) Cats need a lot more sand depth than the one you set up for yours. At least 4 inches. And of course they need more than one litter box.

    • @MicolAndOtherAnimals
      @MicolAndOtherAnimals  2 года назад +1

      Glad to hear it (that you liked it) 😊 i use a corn-based litter, so I cannot put the standard 4 inch layer, the litter is light and it’s like quicksand if it’s too deep 😉

    I like the outer part of this a lot! To hide the litter tray but still provide airflow is amazing!
    The inner box is not ideal imho, because cats like to cover their poo sorrowly, which is much harder for them with such a high litter tray that hinders free movement. Also some (for example elderly cats) might need a lower rim to hold onto while doing their business.
    I'd recommend a normal shallow tray for the above reasons.
    Other than that, amazing idea!

    • @MicolAndOtherAnimals
      @MicolAndOtherAnimals  Год назад +1

      I totally agree on the elderly cat modification! I like the high walls because one of my kitties is a dedicated litter-scaper and her litter sculptures would end up all outside the litterbox 😂

    Could I ask, why is the hole into the litter box the same size as the cat flap? Why not make it bigger? Wondering if my cat would like this set up, as she will not use her current, open litter tray for poos, only urine.

    • @MicolAndOtherAnimals
      @MicolAndOtherAnimals  3 года назад +4

      Hi Yael, It's a habit of mine t make it that size. I make it as small as possible because my ladies like to dig, so I minimize the mount of litter that gets thrown out. If you try it, do let me know how it goes, my ladies really liked it 😊

    • @MicolAndOtherAnimals
      @MicolAndOtherAnimals  3 года назад

      Thank you 🥰 for the wood I used a jigsaw, but in this piece of furniture the wood is so thin a simple small hand saw would do. @@MicolAndOtherAnimals It was not exactly repurposing 🤫 I bought it for that reason. I cut 2 boxes. The smaller had thinner plastic, that was okay. The big one made my hands hurt. Your litterbox is as beautiful as a litterbox can be btw. Would you tell me the measurements of it and the size of the cat? Because I have a laundrybox that looks just like the table, but my cats are Maine Coons and I think they would not fit in there.

      Awww thank you 🥰 Mine is 57cm on the long side. It’s an IKEA Samla plastic tote. Honestly, with Maine Coons I would go a bit bigger actually, but it depends on the actual size of your cats 😊
