Why do you your mushrooms have fuzz on the bottom? Is it a bad sign?
In this video, I give a quick rundown of why mushrooms can get the so-called "fuzzy feet", and its relationship to FAE (fresh air exchange).

I starve my block of oxygen a little at night by covering the holes of my tub slightly and it has the fuzzy feet effect slightly but it also causes them to be a little fatter and grow a little bigger. I found this block's "happy medium" as far as CO2 and I'm pretty proud of that. She loves it!

Ok,, so i never put holes in my monotubs. I even use shoe boxes most of the time. I can't always be there to fan so I'm thinking I might start putting holes in the larger monotubs for more FAE. I'm one of those who likes to let the mushrooms do what they do and not put too much effort into trying to "grow them". But I do notice my harvests are sometimes fuzzy and elongated reaching for air at the top. Great video and always appreciate the information you put out there for us.

I feel like the mycelium uses water as a membrane to exchange gas with air, the humidity on and in the forest floor is near 100%, but a few inches above the floor is 60-70%, that’s when the mushrooms makes gills to interact with the air. I think rhizomorphic mycelium Is directly related to moisture levels. I want to know more!

Thanks for this. I've adopted a minimal interference approach, and didn't monitor the fruiting stage very much. I had a look after a couple of weeks of fruiting stage and there were a couple of mushrooms with four inch stems, so I left it another week, and the grow bag was full of flat caps and fuzz. I didn't know what the fuzz was - thought maybe it was its own mycelium, but was worried it could have been something else. Long story short, I put it in the compost bin. I hope the worms are happy.

3:34 That's a very interesting point to bring up, especially when considering various mushrooms that can be grown on various media but will only fruit when very specific conditions are met (like after bonding with a tree or shrub, certain weather conditions, forest fires, etc.). I know some medicinal growers like Myriad Mycology sell Agarikon mushroom powders by simply colonizing substrate and then grind and dry it instead of wait for the fruiting body to develop. Pretty sure that's what Paul Stamet's Host Defense capsules are also filled with.

Never fan. It's outdated and does nothing of any benefit. Fanning stresses the mycelium and can lead to matting and other problems. The same with having fans running, as that can dry out the substrate surface. Fuzzy feet are as much genetics as anything else.

I ordered a Blue Oyster grow kit (first time growing) and it came with a small humidity tent. On the first flush they were very long with small caps. I realized they needed more FAE so now I’m on the second flush and I’ve been taking the tent off and fanning it a bit throughout the day. They just started pinning yesterday and today they’re growing long and tiny caps again. Should I just throw the humidity tent out?? I don’t see other kits needing a humidity tent, but it says to use it in the instructions and not to spray to mushrooms because they with wither.

    • @Mycophilia

Oysters need lots of FAE and moisture so I would not throw the tent out. I would try making little holes all over the bag so they can get more passive fae. You may find they’ll dry out faster, so if they do dry then I’d give them a gentle misting from afar.

One tub looks like it is colonizing just fine. Yet no fruiting.
The tub next to it looks like very minimum colonizing. Yet that tub has about 50 tiny pins with 4 of them actually much larger. The strain is golden teacher. I noticed the caps are very dark not golden brown.
The other 3 tubs on the lower shelves. Basically have done nothing. I broke up the those tubs as there was a crust almost on the surface with no colonizing.
I have the humidity set at 85-96 and air out take fan on high.
    Any thoughts?
