I found that just dumping the fully colonized substrate into a 50qt tub with lid works wonders for me! no holes, tape, cotton, etc. I just open lid every so often & give it a mist on bottom of lid & sides as needed & trim when ready! I don't like to overcomplicate things & it works wonders for me!
@tseuren123 Well I just literally cut the plastic off of the fully colonized brick/cake & place it in the bin sometimes on tinfoil sometimes just set it on substrate, just whatever I'm feeling at the time but pet potty pads work really good to absorb & retain moisture in the bin really well
@@NorthSpore Big fan of your grain spawn too guys! There's a lot of inconsistent sellers on Amazon and I have seen nothing but quality and care with your products.
Grrrr.... got me thinking about growing again. First time I grew with cakes from substrate jars and just placed the cakes inside a monotub. Spreading it out would definitely create much higher and bigger yields. It's a really fun and educational process.
This was an amazing video! I am still a beginner and am currently trying out your all in one grow bag for the first time ever. There only seem to be short videos related to the all in one bags. I get that it is pretty straight forward but it would be nice if there was longer format video such as this one where you can show a harvest and second flush of the all in one please. Thank you very much for all that you do for us who wouldn’t be able to do this without your help!
Thank you. For drilling bdw I've used a soldering iron before. Mark the circular holes, set temperature if possible to around 350 C, use the razor looking tip and melt slightly inside the marked lines, surprisingly clean cuts, no burr and no fear of cracking. Any uneven cuts can be melted back using the iron (which is why cut slightly inwards). Keep a wet rag handy to wipe the solder tip if too much material gets on it.
Good job doing the video. Not a lot of endless explaining. The things you did talk about were understood. Im using this method and materials so your video is helping. Thanks!
I would suggest the use of a pipe de-burring tool when cleaning the edges of the drilled holes. Much faster and safer than using a standard razor. Great video!

Two questions. 1. Is there any concern in having fruiting conditions too early (ie fresh air exchange)? 2. After placing the casing layer, are you just setting and forgetting? No need for daily misting and fanning?
Are you seeing pinning occur before full mycelial coverage (cake turns white)? It could be that there is too much airflow. I would worry about drying out and contamination as well. You can set and forget and it will likely still work well, but increasing airflow a little, probably by removing a filter on either end and then misting the tub once a day to make up for moisture loss is a good idea. You could also crack the lid a bit. You shouldn’t really need to fan, but it won’t hurt as long as moisture is maintained.
I bought your guys all in one bag. Once it’s all colonized can I add substrate and do this same method in the tub? Or do I just add the all in one to the tub by itself. Thanks
Came across an instagram video from you guys. I figured there’s gotta be a way for me to just grow my own rather than overpaying for chocolates and whatnot. Gonna try this out and hopefully make some awesome chocolate for s’mores
Question: I colonised a all-in-one bag then mixed it with substrate and left to recolonise, but the pins have started, covering the whole surface......no chance to use the casing layer......any ideas why this happened?...thanx
So what's the difference between this method and the bucket method. Is different methods better for different species or is the mono tub better for better harvest amounts?
It really depends on the species your growing and your growing space! The bucket tech requires a little bit more space, whereas a monotub is self-contained and can be used to grow mushrooms in many different settings.
Some people put tape or masking tape over the holes which don’t allow for airflow during colonization stage. Only when they put the box into fruiting stage will they replace the tape with filter discs, micro pore tape, etc. Is that an unnecessary step? Anyway. Great video. 👍
Excellent Video, very informative for a beginner to intermediate grower. I learnt more here than most of the other videos put together, good job bro...
I've seen colonization in one week after inoculation of spores!! Amazing I thought culture worked faster. It's growing in a grain bag, but not the all in one grow bag yet, any suggestions would be great by anyone, I'm new to this.
Spores tend to take a little bit longer to colonize a substrate so I would give your all in one bag more time. That's impressive your grain bag is already colonizing!
might be a stupid question but what do i do after harvesting? like i dispose of all the substrate, clean everything, and essentially completely start back over?
We really don’t use it much beyond experiments because we have large autoclaves (industrial pressure cookers) as well as smaller but still beefy All-American pressure cookers that would be better for most purposes. That said, as long as the Instant Pot has a pressure cook function (I think this one does), it could be used for sterilizing many different materials. Sometimes we just use it to make dinner 😂
Thank you so much for the video. I'm going to make my own but smaller. I brought your filters and my second all in one grow bag. I'll use those in the tub I have a question. With the filters, they came exposed, is it okay to give them a big spray with alcohol? Will that lower the quality of filtering?
Our sterilized grain bags are 3 lbs and we’d usually recommend using 2-3 substrate bags. At 5lbs a bag using 3 of them, we’re talking about a 5:1 ratio. If you want to use 2 bags of substrate (and I usually do this) for a higher spawn rate, closer to 3:1, go for it 👍
Something I wanna know. Is it possible to use the spores of the mushroom to grow more or are you locked into having to constantly buy the cultures if you want to grow more of them? Cuz that is legit my biggest problem, the worry about the cost of having to constantly buy and probably import those mushrooms in. If I only have to do it once and then re create them using their own spores then it's a lot easier to and viable for me.
This is definitely possible, but more challenging. The best way to expand and keep a culture is to clone it! Much easier & avoids any potential issues that can arise from new genetics.
Dumb question: When you add the casing layer on top of your fully-colonized bulk substrate, what prevents the mycelium from trying to then colonize the new casing layer? Wouldn't that just make it expend more energy? Would putting bubblewrap over a non-cased substrate serve the same "leaves on the forest floor" purpose? Thanks!
Casing layers can become fully colonized by the mycelium, a phenomenon known as ‘overlay’ in the mushroom community. To prevent overlay, you want to introduce fruiting conditions/triggers as soon as you notice some signs of the mycelium making its way to the surface. I would not recommend using bubble wrap since it's not breathable. The point of the casing layer is to help maintain a more consistent surface humidity (which helps healthy pin formation), while being breathable to still allow for gas exchange.
I have a question, so I want to grow some mushrooms and I can see lots of people using monotubs, is it safe to just grow them indoors without any ventilation? I have just seen in other methods of growing like martha tents and any larger setps they require some way of filtering out the spores, usually a fan with a filter or leading outside. I am just confused if the filter patches are sufficient protection, I am thinking specifically about growing larger amounts so I don't want to be having tonnes of spores in the house and end up getting ill.
Good question! With this amount of mushrooms it's not a huge concern unless someone in your home has allergies or breathing sensitivities, in which case keeping the bin somewhere away from the general living area (like a basement or spare room) and/or in a well ventilated area can help. In general, we always recommend keeping your grow in a well-ventilated area and harvesting your mushrooms before they drop spores to reduce the risk of larger amounts of spores entering your living space. I hope that helps!
Most videos talk about misting the inside regularly. Did I miss that here? Did he really just mist with water to rehydrate the second flush and not any time during the first flush?
During colonization, if you're materials are hydrated properly, you shouldn't mist as it can introduce contaminants. Misting during fruiting can be a helpful thing to do!
Interesting video, thanks! Can I ask please, if you use monotub (without electronic stuff - humidifiers etc.) for PF tek is it gonna to work please? I mean "set and forget" using physics for FAE?
The filters are sized in mm, not inches and 1 inch is 25 mm, which I haven't been able to find./ Where do you get them? And can you grow fruiting blocks in the monotub?
alright then i love portobello so am adding the fan and moisture mist machine for added flow my hope is to make a coco coir alternative subtrate as i want it bs free, as evolution of mushroom growing seems a new frontier as of yet surprisingly like how hydroponic has evoved as to the mushrooms aha i love the ease and is what am after easy easy easy more fun more nutrition more vitamins more food simple gardening keeps us healthy and produce draw stocked up weeee!
We don't have any experience growing parasol mushrooms, and it looks like they're a bit easier - though still difficult - to grow outdoors. You could always do an experiment!
I think I made a slight mistake on my second grow. I added coco coir after full bin inoculation of the monotub but before any pinning showed. My mushrooms are growing all around the outside of the bin but not in the center. Mostly in front of the fan ( i have your full fancy dancy kit). I feel like maybe the coco coir stopped air flow? Because closer to the fan they are growing great and all around the furthest edge of the bin they are also growing great. I didnt do an overly thick layer but I dont know. I tried removing a bunch of the coco coir a few days ago but still no pinning in that central area. Might skip coco coir on the next batch or just do it super thin and wait until i see pinning starting. Your thoughts?
It sounds like several things could be at play. For one thing, your coir layer could be thick - ½” is all that’s really needed. Along with that, you probably have a moisture issue. Did you hydrate the coir properly? Make sure the humidity is up around 90% inside as well. They don’t need much air, so I think it has more to do with moist microclimates along the edges. The species you are growing definitely matters here, but if you’re growing manure loving medicinal species, I feel good about this advice. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at info@northspore.com to discuss this further.
I can see issues with isopropyl alcohol and a closed space. Especially when it's a plastic enclosed space that could generate static electricity or Sparks. Why not use a dilution of household bleach instead? Advantages or disadvantages?
Bleach takes longer to work and has a much stronger odor whereas alcohol dries quickly and the odor leaves quickly. Either or both can work, it's up to preference 🙂
🚨⚠️DON'T HESITATE BUY THEIR MONOTUB KIT🎉⚠️ I'm a jack of all trades and always DIY everything, but man, I saw your guys' monotub kit with a tub that seems sturdy and just perfectly designed for growing mushrooms. And then it comes the really nice humidifier on sale for 125 bucks 🤯😵💫. I didn't even hesitate. I bought it, lol. I absolutely can not wait to start growing in this system! I'll be trying out your substrates too 🤙
no, that shouldn't happen because it is a relatively closed system. If you've got a super wet wall with exposed wood, fungus will find its way in there somehow anyway.
I don’t see why not! Plenty of folks use painters tape as ‘filters’, so I imagine a medical mask could work. I would recommend using a mask that’s effective at filtering very small particles.
I have to use a tub with a rubber seal, because fungus knats are an issue for me when growing culinary mushrooms. Hopefully this will help someone else 🙏🏽 🍄 ❤
Our hole placement helps facilitate the ‘passive’ nature of the monotub. Their location is intended to promote airflow, pulling fresh O2 in through the top filters and allowing the more dense CO2 to escape through the bottom filters.
Mushrooms typically grow in manure or hardwood substrates - check out our video for growing in beds outdoors for more info 🙂 ruclips.net/video/9jovIxInkRs/видео.htmlsi=gVnl2R1d2TmHjbix
We’ve designed our monotub to have maximum versatility! With more holes it can better regulate airflow especially if you’re growing culinary species that want more air. What you’re describing can totally work though! Also, many differently sized tubs are possible. It’s all about the principles of the tub and whether the needs of the mushroom species are satisfied 🙂
Do you mean for breaking up kits and putting them in a monotub? We'd still recommend mixing with substrate - otherwise you can also put fruiting block kits in the monotub without breaking them up 🙂
If you're going to use a liner to prevent side-pinning, you want a very thin, limp plastic bag. A tall kitchen bag is ideal, the thinner and cheaper the better (and unscented). Get the cheapest box of store-brand tall kitchen bags you can find. Liners prevent side pins by adhering to the cake, such that there are no little voids along the wall and bottom of tub with favorable microclimates for pinning. A very thin liner will continue to adhere to the cake as it contracts. A thick liner is less pliable and it will not adhere properly to a shrinking cake. And, yeah, the color of the plastic liner does not matter. Light does not cause side pinning -- humid voids do. Even with a perfectly adhering liner, sometimes a few of the little buggers will just pin on the side anyway, making their own room. Better the surface conditions, the higher percentage of the flush will be where you want them to be.
There are many different things that can work as filters. Traditionally, folks will use Poly-Fil (synthetic pillow stuffing) that can be found cheaply at any craft store. You can also use common micropore tape (usually sold at pharmacies) quite effectively 👍
Hey Brian, cool to hear your starting mushrooms. I'm thinking of getting back into them, but I've got to look at preventing contamination. Found out from the last time growing that the house is a great habitat for it. Also watched a channel called GordoTEK build a cheap laminar flow hood. I might try to use the one at work if possible.
@@NorthSporeThank you for responding. That being the case means there’s a pretty good buck to be made deceiving the public. Why else would all these companies choose hippy/Grateful Dead product packaging. I’m guessing half their business comes from folks hoping the content is something it is not.
I think you're not quite getting it. Many folks are selling all-in-one bags, substrates, information and even genetic material. It's key to pay attention to what is sold together and why. Just because one vendor sells a grow system without certain genetics, doesn't make them deceptive, even if they use trippy imagery. All it means is that folks have to go elsewhere for the other piece that, were they to sell it, would cross legal boundaries.
A lot has to do with air exchange and how there are a ton of organisms in the air at all times that could potential find a home in the grow. Essentially, you need to create a very sterile environment for an indoor grow. (:
@NorthSpore thank you. Love your products btw. I've been growing your blue oyster, lions mane, shitake, and chestnut mushrooms. I still can't get the button mushrooms to fruit but still grow beautiful mycelium. Thanks for all the videos!
It can, but it's hard to harvest because it just sort of bubbles up. Lion's Mane likes a small and defined surface, like a crack, to fruit from and form well.
Man gone through 3 A.I.1. No good, why? I don't have one good excuse and currently I am in the process of letting the mycelium turn into pins which has a couple big patches of white hair like fibrous stuff and no pins are growing as of yet. Is there a person who can help
During the colonization stage, all holes should be covered. The risk of contamination is highest during the inoculation and colonization stages. Uncolonized substrate is prime real estate for molds and bacteria, so it’s very important to minimize the amount of time that raw substrate is exposed to an external environment. If you repeatedly have issues with contamination, you might even want to consider taping the lip where the lid and base of the monotub meet.
@@NorthSpore i’m talking should they be covered with plugs to keep c02 higher during colonization, or just with filter patches. Don’t remember it being mentioned in vid
I highly recommend NOT adding water to the substrate for field capacity SPECIFICALLY for the boomr bags. I have been using the boomr bags for months now, they are excellent but after forgetting to check for field capacity and not adding water on my first try , I had an EXCELLENT yield. After that , I remembered several times in a row to check for field capacity and added water , EVERY time I added water there was contamination issues and/or mold. Weeks of waiting for the grain bag to colonize , all for nothing, several times in a row. After getting incredibly frustrated , I remembered my first try I didn’t add water, so I tried that again and had incredible grows ever since. This advice only applies for the boomr bag . The boomr bags are already well hydrated and without water added the tubs still had tons of condensation on the walls and top.
I think this was my issue too. After mixing and waiting a few days, I thought it was possibly too dry so I misted some water in the tub. Tricho mold showed up a few days later. So sad. Trying again soon.
soooo we are not gonna mention that u need to cover up those holes (at least the top ones) during colonization? then cover small and un cover large to fruit. kind of a huge step u missed there buds.
Thank you for this feedback - we will see if we can add a note to the video somehow. While we mention it at the beginning, it probably would've been helpful to mention again while inoculating the monotub even while the filters are shown on the tub 👍

Do you not plug your holes initially for colonisation then switch to filter patches for fruiting?
That's definitely an appropriate way to do it! Starting with a bit higher airflow and then just sticking with it works too.
Do you need to seal the injection port after injecting the spores?
Nope, the ports are self-sealing!

You can use almost any sized tub in a similar manner as in the video 👍

You want to mist it everyday during the fruiting stage but when it is colonizing it is important to allow it to be so contaminates do not get in. (:

Interesting video, thanks! Can I ask please, if you use monotub (without electronic stuff - humidifiers etc.) for PF tek is it gonna to work please? I mean "set and forget" using physics for FAE?
For manure-loving legal species, the basic monotub set up without automation can work 👍
@@NorthSpore thank you very much!
The filters are sized in mm, not inches and 1 inch is 25 mm, which I haven't been able to find./ Where do you get them? And can you grow fruiting blocks in the monotub?
We sell them on the North Spore website: northspore.com/collections/grow-bags-filters
Just Google self adhesive filter patches
Great video thank you guys🫡
alright then i love portobello so am adding the fan and moisture mist machine for added flow my hope is to make a coco coir alternative subtrate as i want it bs free, as evolution of mushroom growing seems a new frontier as of yet surprisingly like how hydroponic has evoved as to the mushrooms aha i love the ease and is what am after easy easy easy more fun more nutrition more vitamins more food simple gardening keeps us healthy and produce draw stocked up weeee!
(:
Does the Monotub approach also work with Parasol? I wasn‘t able to find anything about growing this mushrooms indoors.
We don't have any experience growing parasol mushrooms, and it looks like they're a bit easier - though still difficult - to grow outdoors. You could always do an experiment!
Great video! I look forward to getting started.
Let's grow! 🙌
Do the mushrooms need to still be in the dark when flowering or should you put in the light?
We recommend ambient light throughout the entire process once in the Boomr Bin 🙂
🚨⚠️DON'T HESITATE BUY THEIR MONOTUB KIT🎉⚠️
I'm a jack of all trades and always DIY everything, but man, I saw your guys' monotub kit with a tub that seems sturdy and just perfectly designed for growing mushrooms. And then it comes the really nice humidifier on sale for 125 bucks 🤯😵💫. I didn't even hesitate. I bought it, lol. I absolutely can not wait to start growing in this system! I'll be trying out your substrates too 🤙
I subscribed bc you did the tendril thing when u changed bits.
Try putting a notter cassing layer on after a 3 harvest and fill in the side too
Never tried that!
If i use this monotub in the room, could it affect the wall of the room, like become moldy?
no, that shouldn't happen because it is a relatively closed system. If you've got a super wet wall with exposed wood, fungus will find its way in there somehow anyway.
would medical masks work as a substitute for the filters?
I don’t see why not! Plenty of folks use painters tape as ‘filters’, so I imagine a medical mask could work. I would recommend using a mask that’s effective at filtering very small particles.
I have to use a tub with a rubber seal, because fungus knats are an issue for me when growing culinary mushrooms. Hopefully this will help someone else 🙏🏽 🍄 ❤
I have shoeboxes without seal. You think micro-tape would work for a seal
I grow with grow kits. Mate, I'm really gonna try this. Thanks for sharing! Were they golden teachers bty?
Awesome! These are pioppinos.
I never saw hole placement like this, is there a special reason for that?
Our hole placement helps facilitate the ‘passive’ nature of the monotub. Their location is intended to promote airflow, pulling fresh O2 in through the top filters and allowing the more dense CO2 to escape through the bottom filters.
@@NorthSpore I know this, but I was asking why you choose this specific design with two rows.
Can you add the link for part 2? I can’t seem to find it on the you tube site.

Which are the heights for the holes?
Doesn't have to be super exact, but watch again because it's mentioned.
Using a Step Drill Bit is way better for drilling holes :)
Hello, sir. Is this technique suitable for mushrooms growing in soil?
Mushrooms typically grow in manure or hardwood substrates - check out our video for growing in beds outdoors for more info 🙂

How does a liner increase total yield? Serious question :)
The liner can reduce moisture loss and side pinning, which can increase overall yield on the top the fact that it makes cleanup easier 🙂
I thought there should be two lower holes in each long side and one upper hole near lid in each short side. And they are one size
We’ve designed our monotub to have maximum versatility! With more holes it can better regulate airflow especially if you’re growing culinary species that want more air. What you’re describing can totally work though! Also, many differently sized tubs are possible. It’s all about the principles of the tub and whether the needs of the mushroom species are satisfied 🙂
how often can u flush with one of these?
after the first flush, you can get several more every 2-3 weeks.
Can you guys show us a simpler way without the substrate? Like a ready to grow transferred into a mono
How is it that you don't add humidity at any point? not even during fruiting?
Some species don't need any more humidity than what comes from the substrates, but it also depends on your environment as well 👍
What kind of mushrooms you use?
These are pioppino.
Excellent video. Thank you so much!
We appreciate the support 🙂
excellent excellent excellent tutorial
what If I only use coco coir without vermiculite??
Lots of folks use only coco coir, they both have similar functions 🙂
thank you very much..its very useful
ur website won't ship to me, any other filter recs??
There are many different things that can work as filters. Traditionally, folks will use Poly-Fil (synthetic pillow stuffing) that can be found cheaply at any craft store. You can also use common micropore tape (usually sold at pharmacies) quite effectively 👍
Great video. I am new to growing. I received 2 culture syringes from you, and can't wait to start.
Let us know how it goes 🙌
Hey Brian, cool to hear your starting mushrooms. I'm thinking of getting back into them, but I've got to look at preventing contamination. Found out from the last time growing that the house is a great habitat for it. Also watched a channel called GordoTEK build a cheap laminar flow hood. I might try to use the one at work if possible.
Is it true that it is illegal for any company to sell mushroom grow bags of the type containing psilocybin. And therefore none of them do.
Yes, that is generally true.
Why is contamination an issue for mushrooms grown indoors but not for mushrooms growing in the wild?
A lot has to do with air exchange and how there are a ton of organisms in the air at all times that could potential find a home in the grow. Essentially, you need to create a very sterile environment for an indoor grow. (:
@NorthSpore thank you. Love your products btw. I've been growing your blue oyster, lions mane, shitake, and chestnut mushrooms. I still can't get the button mushrooms to fruit but still grow beautiful mycelium. Thanks for all the videos!
Were could l get that liner?🍄
We got our plastic sheet from Home Depot 👍
Can Lion's Mane be grown in this?
It can, but it's hard to harvest because it just sort of bubbles up. Lion's Mane likes a small and defined surface, like a crack, to fruit from and form well.
is that regular mushrooms or the magical ones?
those are edible pioppino mushrooms
@@NorthSpore Gorgeous flush they were too! Great video and very nice looking merchandise and range of gear you got rocking now. Best wishes from UK :)

Super sexy video all-around. Great production value and graphics! Congrats on ur booming business!!!

so should i be covering these holes at all during colonization?
During the colonization stage, all holes should be covered. The risk of contamination is highest during the inoculation and colonization stages. Uncolonized substrate is prime real estate for molds and bacteria, so it’s very important to minimize the amount of time that raw substrate is exposed to an external environment. If you repeatedly have issues with contamination, you might even want to consider taping the lip where the lid and base of the monotub meet.
@@NorthSpore i’m talking should they be covered with plugs to keep c02 higher during colonization, or just with filter patches. Don’t remember it being mentioned in vid
@@NorthSpore What do you cover the holes with? I already applied the filter patches to the bin I just made.
Do Northspore dispatch to the uk ?
We don't currently ship to the UK, but hope to in the future
liquid culture is also much cheaper to produce, isn't it ;)
Thanks Brother.
Do you ship overseas
Unfortunately right now we can only ship within the USA and some things to Canada.
We agree! Boomr Bags are hydrated to 60-70%, so adding more is just an unnecessary risk unless they have dried out.
What do the holes get covered with? I already applied the filter patches to my bin, which I have set up and not used yet.
