You were pretty close in categorizing Nightwish music after only one song (modern day opera, theatrical, fantasy rock / fantasy metal) even you obviously didn't listened this genre of music - that give me hope you'll continue.. Since you started this journey, here are some info that may help you navigate (a short history of the band, concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just saw her. This song is pretty unique, even for Nightwish, who pride themselves on having such a varied sound in general. For 'cleaner' sounds from Marco the Bassist, check out The Islander Live, and almost any other song from Floor to get another style from her. :3
This song is originally from 1998 so it's a bit different from what they normally offer. Also not Marko's normal vocal style cause he joined the band in 2002 and the original song had a guest vocalist for the male part. These days they have male parts written specifically for Marko and they sound different.
This is one of there harder songs. I am glad you are going to give them another chance. I think you will be surprised by what they have to offer. I want to thank you for your honest opinion. Well, some people just don't like the style he was vocalizing here. But we know he can do marvelous things. She just found Nightwish. Once she hears Marco's clean vocals, she will come around. I love that Nightwish has something for everybody. :)
nite mare5 oh. But Floor never sang much in classical way in nightwish, from the very beginning she has sung originally operatic songs in contemporary way and belting. There actually has been more use of operatic vocals in recent years than in wacken

As noted before, Nightwish is quite varied. There is a lot of opera that is infused in their work. Marco (Bassist) actually can have quite a sweet and calming voice when he wants. Yep. Symphonic metal. And the male voice, Marco, can really sing, just check out their cover of High Hopes (End of An Era concert). And they have a variety of songs from soft ballads to quite heavy ones. And long, epic songs like Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013).

You nailed it Marlene. This is a very old Nightwish song. It is set up as a type of opera of Musical theater. Marco the bassist is playing the part if the evil spirit of the ocean(Devil). Floor the singer is playing the part of the innocent female ocean spirit (Mermaid). The evil spirit wants to possess the innocent female spirit and she is resisting him. It is performance art in the form of a fantasy metal song. Hopefully you were not expecting some pop crap, this stuff is much more artistic. This is only a sample. They have many other styles from operatic to folk music. It may not be your cup of tea? Marco the bassist is actually a very good singer given the type of songs that he sings lead on. This band being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in multiple different directions, They have the grand epic multipart masterpiece songs like ,Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. they have the more classic thrash heavy metal sound in songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. and multiple songs in between. They even have a very celtic sound in songs like "E'lan" or The Walden.. You happen to have picked one of their more extreme harsh vocal sounding songs..
it might be a good idea to listen/react (at first) to tracks like 'Ghost Love Score' (Wacken 2013 live) or 'Poet and the Pendulum' (Wembley live 2015 version) or 'greatest show on earth' (Tampere live 2015) etc. by nightwish ... which are a bit more handy to ppl who are not so familiar with that genre. they are also even more interesting for voice enthusiast .... Floor Jansen is btw. able (and did that) to sing all kind of styles/genres/colors and mixes that to create fitting contexts/buildups for the music - and with greater details/versatility than almost all other great singers ...
Tuomas, the keyboard player, who composes and arranges most of the music, draws much of his influence from fairy tales and legends, so, Fantasy Metal is not an entirely inaccurate description. an unusual first choice of songs from Nightwish to react to for sure. The female singer is Floor Jansen. She's a classically trained soprano and the band's 3rd lead singer in their 20 year history. She has a very wide range, and, can sing in multiple styles and languages. As you've seen, Nightwish has a very passionate following. Reactors have enjoyed the benefits of that devotion. Welcome!
I think you're gonna like Marco's (bass player/male vocalist) singing with another songs, like While Your Lips Are Still Red (ballad) or their Pink Floyd cover song High Hopes from a year 2005. Marco really can sing beautifully too, but this is a different kind a song. Thanks for reacting to it and your honest opinion. Please, do more Nightwish! Oh, they are categorized as symphonic metal but fantasy metal is actually maybe even more accurate, because their songs are like a fantasy stories! :D
This is a very interesting song to choose for your first listen to Nightwish, they are often theatrical but this song is at one of their extremes. As a band they have explored all over the Metal/Rock spectrum which makes their music very interesting and varied and often surprising even within a single song!
Marko has varied vocal styles from what you heard in this to more of a "normal" metal sound, hard rock classic rock, southern rock, country and folk sounding. NW as Twenty years and more than a 100 songs that are awesome. This was a react to the new album that unites the most iconic songs of them. They had 3 main singers, the bassist Marko is doing that voice in purpose to oppose her voice. Since you are beggining the journey please react to Ghost Love Score Wacken 13 and you will see the epicness of symphonic metal. The keyboardist is Tuomas who wrotes 95% of their songs. Th first singer was Tarja PHENOMENAL operatic voice, left in disagrement in 2005, then came Anette more poppish, great in studio but not so good liv, although great singer and isnt given enough credit. And there is Floor the greatest female performer of all time, mixing the 3. NW is only to be seen live to receive all their energy. If you want Marko by himself you will be surprised by the cover of HIgh Hopes of Pink Floyd and The Islander in Tampere. If you continue the path you will see that NW army is strong, loyal and supportive. continue the good work
Marco (the bassist) is an awesome singer. He doesn't sing in this particular song, because he's playing the part of the character in the song, but you owe it to yourself to check out more of Nightwish. Anything from the Wacken 2013 concert.

Interesting..this is the first time I heard someone said Marco's voice was bad. To be fair one song from Marco doesn't make him bad. Ever Dream, High Hope's, Islander, Bye Bye Beautiful, Ghost River...are good examples.
Vocal coaches/teachers, guitarists & other musicians, sound engineers, average music lovers, dogs etc. have all reacted to Nightwish countless times. Still waiting for the first alien's reaction. Their current female lead vocalist in this is Floor Jansen, who told in an interview that she had a really bad cold during their shows in South-America - so bad that she could hardly talk, which pegs the question under how heavy medication she was during this show in Buenos Aires.
While it doesn’t really come across in this song, Marko (the bassist) can really sing (and these are all shows after a surgery on his vocal cords didn’t go well), I’d recommend giving a listen to his performance of The Islander (Live at Tampere), where he gets to shine on his own. You’ve probably gotten a bunch of suggestions already, but Floor and Marco harmonizing together in The Poet and The Pendulum (most use the Wacken performance) is excellent. As others have said, this is not the usual starting place for someone learning about Nightwish, especially when this was written originally for different male & female singers. If you find yourself enjoying the usual suggestions, I’d point you to Yours Is An Empty Hope, where Marco gets the to sing clean and Floor gets to do the growling part. Personally, I’m way past my metal days, but having been introduced to this band earlier in the year, they are one of my favorites now. Their live shows are truly a piece of performance art from each member. They also do their own lighting, rigging, etc..

Their original singer (when this song was written) was a metal opera singer. Their older stuff was very different from what the band write today, they are still a theatrical band live, but it's less operatic. Their second singer was a pop/rock singer and their music changed accordingly. Now they have Floor singing they can do anything because she can sing anything and sing it better than most... by a long margin! She's a 6 foot Metal Valkyrie Goddess who can sing everything from Opera to Latin Rock Salsa to Death Growls. It means over time they've moved from being Symphonic Metal with a heavy opera leaning to encompass many styles, all with that unmistakable Nightwish signature sound and song writing. The keyboard player is also their song writer/lyrical/composition genius and the bass player also has a great voice. He's been a singer for a long time but had surgery on his throat in the 90s that changed his voice, he serves as a great counterpart to Floor's beautiful clear vocals. He's one hell of a vocalist in his own right, check out The islander for his clean vocals ruclips.net/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/видео.html The drummer (Kai Hato) is the best drummer in Finland (where the band hails from) and one of the top drummers in the world. Emppu the guitarist is one hell of a guitarist and band munchkin/hobbit/comedian, can switch from balls to the wall riffs and scorching solos to subtle understated guitar in the blink of an eye and with Nightwish, he often has too because the theatrical is part of Nightwish live. They are all top musicians and probably the best at their craft in the metal scene today. They certainly helped define the whole Symphonic metal genre! They are also releasing a new album early next year and doing a world tour next year... something that has got their legions of fans very excited about because who knows what it will sound like? With Nightwish it could be anything but we know it'll be awesome and all the new songs will be even better live. If you want something a bit more Nightwish now watch stuff from Waken 2013 or Wembley 2015 or Tampere to see 'modern' Nightwish. The Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean is from last years Decades tour where they played a lot of their older more operatic stuff.
The bassist (marko) has a great voice. This is more like what you were saying. He is having more of a speaking role as the devil himself rather than singing in this song

Nice video, open minded reactor... i might hang out on your channel. Yes, he was more of a story teller in this one. But he can actually sing very good, too. And she... well, she can sing pretty much everything. from clean opera to deep growling, she does it all.
Not a great choice for your first Nightwish song. Try Ghost Love Score. And it's called 'symphonic metal'. All lyrics and compositions, including the backing track (which was performed by the London Symphony) are written by the keyboardist Tuomas Halopeinen(sp?). The bassist, Marko, actually has a great voice. Check out Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013, and Everdream from same show to hear more of Marko. Storytime is also a great listen, and basically anything from that same Wacken concert. Everything just came together perfectly that night and it made for a very special event.
@@MarleneMendozaMusic I'll try to answer this one: in the "Decades" tour, after more then 20 years of the band, they made a selection of old songs (released with former lead singers - this one in 1998 for instance) and re-interpreted them with the present formula of the band, in their present style. It's more of a "classic" then a "popular" one. It was a bold move from them to take on this "oldie" one, flawless imo, a stand-out, assuming their history. Singing in character is common in metal, especially power metal and symphonic metal. Fantasy, mythological, sf and historical themes are common in power and viking metal. Iron Maiden has been doing it since the early 80's. Try The Trooper and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Sabaton, the band that Floor's husband is all about the stories of past battles and heroes, see 40 to 1. Blind Guardian has covered Tolkien's work extensively, see The Lord of the Rings. Manowar's Eric Adams took on the voice of Achilles for Achilles Agony and Extasy. Iced Earth has the Gettysburg trilogy of songs, where Ripper Owens delivers lines that pop singers couldn't get past their throat, much less turn to a masterpiece and on and on...

In Nightwish's earlier days, as evidenced here, a fair number of songs were fantasy themed. Nightwish will keep surprising you song after song. Marko the bassist actually has a surprisingly beautiful voice. Floor Jansen is a self confessed "technique nerd" who used to give vocal lessons before becoming much to busy to do it any more.
You are a rock musician, who don't like metal in general it seems. What good is it to post a comment about Symphonic Metal here? Good and honest reaction. Yeah this song was like Theatrical song in metal. The guy actually have a good voice too when he sung in beautiful song with clean vocal. Well I think 'Ghost Love Score' live from Wacken 2013 should be a good choice to introduce Nightwish if you give them with another chance 👍
As noted before, Nightwish is quite varied. There is a lot of opera that is infused in their work. Marco (Bassist) actually can have quite a sweet and calming voice when he wants. Floor sings opera, rock, metal, even a little pop when she wants. She can also growl like a bear when she wants, lol.

You nailed it Marlene. This is a very old Nightwish song. It is set up as a type of opera of Musical theater. Marco the bassist is playing the part if the evil spirit of the ocean(Devil). Floor the singer is playing the part of the innocent female ocean spirit (Mermaid). The evil spirit wants to possess the innocent female spirit and she is resisting him. It is performance art in the form of a fantasy metal song. Hopefully you were not expecting some pop crap, this stuff is much more artistic. This is only a sample. They have many other styles from operatic to folk music. It may not be your cup of tea? Marco the bassist is actually a very good singer given the type of songs that he sings lead on. He does however specialize in dark masculine vocals. Floor Jansen is amazing and can sing any type of genre from Pop to opera to heavy metal. Check out Floor singing on a recent Dutch TV show. You will see what else she can do. I think you might like these. One song is sung in Spanish and The Phantom of the Opera is a duet with a male opera singer.

This band being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in multiple different directions, They have the grand epic multipart masterpiece songs like ,Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. they have the more classic thrash heavy metal sound in songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. and multiple songs in between. They even have a very celtic sound in songs like "E'lan" or The Walden.. You happen to have picked one of their more extreme harsh vocal sounding songs..

it might be a good idea to listen/react (at first) to tracks like 'Ghost Love Score' (Wacken 2013 live) or 'Poet and the Pendulum' (Wembley live 2015 version) or 'greatest show on earth' (Tampere live 2015) etc. by nightwish ... which are a bit more handy to ppl who are not so familiar with that genre. they are also even more interesting for voice enthusiast .... Floor Jansen is btw. able (and did that) to sing all kind of styles/genres/colors and mixes that to create fitting contexts/buildups for the music - and with greater details/versatility than almost all other great singers ...
Tuomas, the keyboard player, who composes and arranges most of the music, draws much of his influence from fairy tales and legends, so, Fantasy Metal is not an entirely inaccurate description. an unusual first choice of songs from Nightwish to react to for sure. The female singer is Floor Jansen. She's a classically trained soprano and the band's 3rd lead singer in their 20 year history. She has a very wide range, and, can sing in multiple styles and languages. As you've seen, Nightwish has a very passionate following. Reactors have enjoyed the benefits of that devotion. Welcome!

I think you're gonna like Marco's (bass player/male vocalist) singing with another songs, like While Your Lips Are Still Red (ballad) or their Pink Floyd cover song High Hopes from a year 2005. This is a very interesting song to choose for your first listen to Nightwish, they are often theatrical but this song is at one of their extremes. As a band they have explored all over the Metal/Rock spectrum which makes their music very interesting and varied and often surprising even within a single song!
Marko has varied vocal styles from what you heard in this to more of a "normal" metal sound, hard rock classic rock, southern rock, country and folk sounding. You should check out

NW as Twenty years and more than a 100 songs that are awesome. This was a react to the new album that unites the most iconic songs of them. They had 3 main singers, the bassist Marko is doing that voice in purpose to oppose her voice. Since you are beggining the journey please react to Ghost Love Score Wacken 13 and you will see the epicness of symphonic metal. The keyboardist is Tuomas who wrotes 95% of their songs. Th first singer was Tarja PHENOMENAL operatic voice, left in disagrement in 2005, then came Anette more poppish, great in studio but not so good liv, although great singer and isnt given enough credit. And there is Floor the greatest female performer of all time, mixing the 3. NW is only to be seen live to receive all their energy. If you want Marko by himself you will be surprised by the cover of HIgh Hopes of Pink Floyd and The Islander in Tampere. If you continue the path you will see that NW army is strong, loyal and supportive. continue the good work
Marco (the bassist) is an awesome singer. He doesn't sing in this particular song, because he's playing the part of the character in the song, but you owe it to yourself to check out more of Nightwish. Anything from the Wacken 2013 concert.

Interesting..this is the first time I heard someone said Marco's voice was bad. To be fair one song from Marco doesn't make him bad. Ever Dream, High Hope's, Islander, Bye Bye Beautiful, Ghost River...are good examples.
Marco is the fn man and can do it all. He was playing a role in this song. You should consider that.
Vocal coaches/teachers, guitarists & other musicians, sound engineers, average music lovers, dogs etc. have all reacted to Nightwish countless times. Still waiting for the first alien's reaction. Their current female lead vocalist in this is Floor Jansen, who told in an interview that she had a really bad cold during their shows in South-America - so bad that she could hardly talk, which pegs the question under how heavy medication she was during this show in Buenos Aires.
While it doesn’t really come across in this song, Marko (the bassist) can really sing (and these are all shows after a surgery on his vocal cords didn’t go well), I’d recommend giving a listen to his performance of The Islander (Live at Tampere), where he gets to shine on his own. You’ve probably gotten a bunch of suggestions already, but Floor and Marco harmonizing together in The Poet and The Pendulum (most use the Wacken performance) is excellent. As others have said, this is not the usual starting place for someone learning about Nightwish, especially when this was written originally for different male & female singers. If you find yourself enjoying the usual suggestions, I’d point you to Yours Is An Empty Hope, where Marco gets the to sing clean and Floor gets to do the growling part.
Personally, I’m way past my metal days, but having been introduced to this band earlier in the year, they are one of my favorites now. Their live shows are truly a piece of performance art from each member. They also do their own lighting, rigging, etc..

Their original singer (when this song was written) was a metal opera singer.
Their older stuff was very different from what the band write today, they are still a theatrical band live, but it's less operatic.
Their second singer was a pop/rock singer and their music changed accordingly.
Now they have Floor singing they can do anything because she can sing anything and sing it better than most... by a long margin!
She's a 6 foot Metal Valkyrie Goddess who can sing everything from Opera to Latin Rock Salsa to Death Growls.
It means over time they've moved from being Symphonic Metal with a heavy opera leaning to encompass many styles, all with that unmistakable Nightwish signature sound and song writing.
The keyboard player is also their song writer/lyrical/composition genius and the bass player also has a great voice.
He's been a singer for a long time but had surgery on his throat in the 90s that changed his voice, he serves as a great counterpart to Floor's beautiful clear vocals.

The drummer (Kai Hato) is the best drummer in Finland (where the band hails from) and one of the top drummers in the world.
Emppu the guitarist is one hell of a guitarist and band munchkin/hobbit/comedian, can switch from balls to the wall riffs and scorching solos to subtle understated guitar in the blink of an eye and with Nightwish, he often has too because the theatrical is part of Nightwish live.
They are all top musicians and probably the best at their craft in the metal scene today.
They certainly helped define the whole Symphonic metal genre!
They are also releasing a new album early next year and doing a world tour next year... something that has got their legions of fans very excited about because who knows what it will sound like?
With Nightwish it could be anything but we know it'll be awesome and all the new songs will be even better live.

Not a great choice for your first Nightwish song. Try Ghost Love Score. And it's called 'symphonic metal'. All lyrics and compositions, including the backing track (which was performed by the London Symphony) are written by the keyboardist Tuomas Halopeinen(sp?). The bassist, Marko, actually has a great voice. Check out Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013, and Everdream from same show to hear more of Marko. Storytime is also a great listen, and basically anything from that same Wacken concert. Everything just came together perfectly that night and it made for a very special event.

@@MarleneMendozaMusic I'll try to answer this one: in the "Decades" tour, after more then 20 years of the band, they made a selection of old songs (released with former lead singers - this one in 1998 for instance) and re-interpreted them with the present formula of the band, in their present style. It's more of a "classic" then a "popular" one. It was a bold move from them to take on this "oldie" one, flawless imo, a stand-out, assuming their history. Singing in character is common in metal, especially power metal and symphonic metal. Fantasy, mythological, sf and historical themes are common in power and viking metal. Iron Maiden has been doing it since the early 80's. Try The Trooper and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Sabaton, the band that Floor's husband is all about the stories of past battles and heroes, see 40 to 1. Blind Guardian has covered Tolkien's work extensively, see The Lord of the Rings. Manowar's Eric Adams took on the voice of Achilles for Achilles Agony and Extasy. Iced Earth has the Gettysburg trilogy of songs, where Ripper Owens delivers lines that pop singers couldn't get past their throat, much less turn to a masterpiece and on and on...
It's not metal fantasy because the lyrics are about real life, almost always from the keyboard player. The genre is symphonic metal.

In Nightwish's earlier days, as evidenced here, a fair number of songs were fantasy themed. Nightwish will keep surprising you song after song. Marko the bassist actually has a surprisingly beautiful voice. Floor Jansen is a self confessed "technique nerd" who used to give vocal lessons before becoming much to busy to do it any more.
