    And I'll also leave this here: peeps, it took me less than 30 seconds to find details of Marlene's education, when she graduated, who she studied under, what she teaches and some reviews from students. :-P
    And nope, I don't know her in the slightest. I just thought it would be interesting to see if I could find evidence of her being a teacher, because doubts were raised.
    I think it's good to doubt and question things. But just to say something isn't true without even checking? That sort of thing can lead to all sorts of problems.

    This never gets old. Juuka grooving on his TAMA double-base set, Emppu driving the rhythm in his signature ESP EV-1, Marco giving us epic base lines in his Warwick Buzzard, Tuomas sharing his genius on his KORGs and Floor leading the crowd like a modern-day 6-foot 1-inch Valkyrie and seducing like a siren. They are all at the top of the talent tree. Each one alone could lead a band into greatness let alone all five of them. One of the best live performances of all time. Not only musically but staging and production is unmatched.

Nightwish is seasoned and very versatile band with great musicianship all the way. If you're genuinely interested, there are dozens of Nightwish songs. I also highly recommend videos from dutch tv-show Beste Zangers 2019. There Floor Jansen show us his great versatility by singing songs of different music styles. It has been added as the ending ever since.

    OK, now that I have seen the infamous quote "she did really well there", I can see that you were actually very impressed based on your facial expression. I think that mentally you moved on really quickly to your technical comments, so that's why you were saying how she didn't go flat and she held the note really well and whatever. So you were just judging based on the criteria and saying that she did really well based on that. I don't take it to mean that you weren't super impressed.

  • @deeteenw
    @deeteenw 4 года назад +24

    Guys, please get a grip on yourself with the negative comments and downvotes. Yes, we are all ardent Floor admirers, but she needs to grow on you a little bit. Yes she can belt it out at the top of her lungs and very powerful at that, but quite many others can do that too, it is not really what makes her stand out.
    What makes Floor so special is that she is among the best in several categories, she is very complete as a singer. She's certainly among the best in the world with her vocal control, has very good range (nearly 4 octaves), is extremely versatile in her style, has excellent stage presence and she emotionally owns all the songs she sings. But some of these qualities are hard to see after just one or two songs, that's why I said she needs to grow on you a little. I mean look at Voice Love Co as an example
    So please be nice to the people who take their time to give us their opinion, we want more Nightwish and Floor reactions, not less and there are really few people who don't dig the band after listening to their third song or so :-)
    Ok, now I have that off my chest, I quite liked your reaction really. Giving up the initial counting after a few tries with "Wow, that's a really cool rhythm" was quite funny, there are not so many that even notice that it breaks with conventional schemes. And IIRC you are the first (or maybe second) to remark on getting back to that rhythm when Floor adds her staccato opera voice to it.
    If I may recommend some ways to go from here: Floors performance of "Shallow" in the dutch Beste Zangers show is noteworthy as a showcase of her vocal control in the soft range. To make Marko grow on you a little I recommend "While your lips are still red" from Wembley. And I think you haven't been introduced to Troy Donockley yet, so why not react to "I want my tears back" from Wacken 2013 to see a bit of Nightwishs more folky side.
    Thank you!

      I agree, I don't get all the negative comments either. She appreciated the song's beat, called it "great", said that Floor's voice put her (Marlene) in a trance and called the whole band "great". She felt that Floor did "really well" at the end and that the song was "great". Also, she paid attention to the time signatures, which isn't what most reactors do. All in all, she complimented both Floor and the rest of the band a lot.
      That being said, I wouldn't have minded a more in-depth analysis, but I think that some people's comments are simply uncalled for.

    After this, I'd suggest Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Buenos Aires, 2018; Poet and the Pendulum, Wembley, 2016*; Dark Chest of Wonders, Wacken 2013; and Ever Dream, Wacken, 2013.
    Just to give you a range of sound from Floor (excluding growls).
    *Note: Poet and the Pendulum has copyright issues, due to someone who remixed the song, in spite of Nightwish holding the original copyright. Just make sure you pause it between each part, and comment about it. Lastly, research the background of the song, as Tuomas, the keyboardist, who writes 95% of the music for Nightwish, wrote Poet and the Pendulum from a place of dark depression, anger, rage, and hope -- all because of having to fire Nightwish's first vocalist, Tarja Tarunen.

They also have several of the more classic heavy thrash metal sound in songs like "Romanticide" or "Song of Myself" or Dark Chest of Wonders".. they even have a very celtic rock sound on songs like "E'lan" and "the Walden".. Yeah, I haven't seen many folks do a breakdown of the time signatures. However, the intro is just a pattern of drag-triplets (with the second note rested) over standard 4/4 time. As she said, it creates a 3 against 4 pull. It sounds like it resolves down to a cut-time signature for that allows for two sets of triplets between each beet. It's very cool. Though I think Toto did the 3 over 4 patter for the intro to Rosanna. Either way, it sets up a very good position of tension leading the listener to yearn for resolution which is where the vocal story begins. Excellent artistry.

    • @Beus38
      @Beus38 4 года назад +2

      @@sangorilla1 The rhythm you're speaking about is actually in the 2nd part of the intro where it indeed is 4/4, 4/4, 3/4 and 4/4. But she got the very beginning exactly right - 6-6-5-6 of fast-paced quarters, or, more precisely, 12/8, 12/8, 10/8, 12/8 with the three beats exactly 3/8 apart. That's the reason why it might sound as a standard 4/4 (because there are four 3/8s in a 12/8, right?) but it's actually not the case in the very beginning, just listen carefully to the drumming.
      Anyway, props to both Marlene and you for breaking it down and for explaining - my terminology is somewhat narrow to be able to correctly explain it. ;)
      Edit: quite possibly, it is not 12/8 and 10/8 but more like 12/16 and 10/16 respectively, depending on the base tempo chosen. I've obviously never seen the score on paper so I'm just guessing whether they are 8ths or 16ths, but otherwise I stand by what I wrote.

      @@Beus38 Here is the rhythm breakdown of the opening sequence:
      (3-3) (3-3) (3-3) (2-2-2) (3-3) (4) (3-3) (2-2-2) then repeated three more times before transitioning to 4/4.
      The eight measure phrase consists of three measures with two sets of triplets, then one measure with three pairs, two more triplets, one set of 4, two triplets, three pairs.
      It took me about a year to get it, but that sixth measure with four beats is the key to the whole thing. Drove me nuts. As a former drummer, I get OCD about dropped beats and added beats.

      @Beus38 4 года назад +1

      @@tcish4708 Yeah, it took me a while to understand your notation and the explanation below but I did and you've got it correctly - it's the same thing that I was saying, just somewhat more expertly put ;) Although, the second measure is a bit ambiguous as there is pretty much nothing happening in it, no beat, no tone (except for the first and only one at its beginning), so it can as well be (2-2-2) or anything else summing up to 6.
      And it's exactly as you said - the key here is the 6th measure with 4 beats instead of 6 - this is where the irregularity happens. That's what I meant with those 10/8 in the third position, when you break them down to 6/8 + 4/8.
      Anyway, thanks for the reply, pleasure to talk with a musician, especially when he proves me right ;) My musical education is somewhat washed-out after all those years of being barely put to use, but my ears never fail me :)

    Not a lot of people notices the compound meters, even fewer does the count. I like that. If you like that sort of stuff, maybe you could react to and break down "When The Water Breaks" by Liquid Tension Experiment? It's a near 18 minute long and very progressive instrumental only track that takes compound meters to new levels. It has been covered by "youtube musicians", so understanding it is not incomprehensible:
    ruclips.net/video/aSU0xBGfkfg/видео.html
    Regarding Floor, when she agreed to step in, she had 48 hours to learn the complete set list, some of the hours spent on a plane, meaning she was probably fighting jet lag as well during her first show. This track is usually featured towards the end, but according to herself it's one of her favorite ones to sing. Completely different style of music, but you may also want to check out her Phantom Of The Opera version, with Henk Poort (actual Dutch phantom):
    ruclips.net/video/plCScjvDOJM/видео.html
    She's also featured in Ayreon projects, along with an impressive list of vocalists and artists. These are progressive rock operas in all sorts of styles, soundscapes, and complexities, but the progressiveness never goes overboard. Valley Of The Queens is a nice but short one, with three layered singers exploring harmonies with three distinct vocal qualities:

    This RUclipsr is just giving her reaction which includes her looking at this from her perspective as a music teacher. The militant Nightwish and Floor Jansen fan responses that demand a specific type reply are pretty sad. How dare people not react to YOUR expectation. Highly skilled musicians and great music. If you look away from the lyrics since they sing in their native language, they're awesome.
    Dice(mv), Play(live), Blooming(mv), Moratorium(live) are great.
    Considered Nightwish: most of their symphonic parts are pre-recorded by orchestra and choir. I know they've used London Philharmonic. Live? Not sure... but I guess it's to keep costs down?

    Hi dear, your voice sounds like Cotton Candy, to help you understand the Nightwish symphonic system:
    The drummer has a clicker in his ear, he is the guy with the cues. The choir and the symphonic sounds come from pre-recorded tracks by the London Philarmonic Orchestra. Add this to extremely talented musicians and the result is what you see and listen to.

    At least you didn't refer to Floor as "the chick" and laugh put of boredom (which she actually said) during the song, like I watched one reactor do. THAT is rude and disrespectful, not simply reacting to Floor hitting that last "Floorgasmic" note without the level of enthusiasm some fans expect. As other commenters have said, Floor's greatness lies not just in her power and 4-octave vocal range, but in her ability to do any style of music with passion and virtuoso vocal skill. She belts out great rock vocals in "Romanticide," growls convincingly in "Yours is an Empty Hope," and breaks your heart with tender vibrato and emotion in "Shallow" and "Winner" from Beste Zangers (a Dutch TV show). No one can truly appreciate Floor after just one song, and you shouldn't be expected to either.
