But for us normal people, this would not be fun at all to play. But it's so much fun to listen to! These guys are not playing around. Can you even begin to understand the counting and polyrythms going on to play this SO TIGHT! This clip is from Morgan Ågren's old drum show called "Trum" which aired on national Swedish television around 1999-2000 or something like that. On each show (think it was 10 in total) he invited different guests on that he'd worked with and did a song or medley with them. For this one he did a medley of riffs from Fredrik Thordendal's solo album "Sol Niger Within", which Morgan recorded the drums for.
Yeah, I remember this so well.. The good old days of UtbildningsRadion! ("Educational Radio", a production company within the realm of Swedish public service). It was lovely for us drummers of course, but at the same time some of the weirdest shit ever produced for television. I really would like to know what the SVT producers were thinking the first time it aired. I mean, it wasn't as if the songs in the other episodes were more accessible than this prime example. Also, his so called "lessons" were... how shall I put it ...not exactly begginer friendly.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums the channel is a part of Swedish public television and makes all sorts of informative programing, some better than others. Many of the guys and girls who worked sound where all musicians themselves and on top of their game.
What is great about this isn't just that it was on Swedish television, the show (which is govt. funded) is called UR (the logo you see in the corner of the screen). You should check out his band "Mats and Morgan band" for your own enjoyment. They sound extremely tasty and original. Their live recording of "en schizofrens dagbok" is epic
Thats amazing. Remember first time i watched Morgan Ågren was when he and Mats Öberg was guest playing with Frank Zappa in Stockholm. Mats was going totally nuts on the keyboard, Morgan was actually trying to pull him away from the it, all while the audience was extatic and FZ himself + band just stood and cheered on stage. One of my top concert moments.
I started playing drums around 1999-2000 and this video was life changing for me. This sound was still so unique back then and I’ve probably seen this at least 500 times. Completely changed how I look at drumming and time.
Oh man, Morgan Agren is one of my favorite drummers, thank you for this one. Mats/Morgan is a Jazz Fusion band he was part of and they were phenomenal. Also Morgan was one of the 3 drummers on Devin Townsend last album (along with Samus66 and Anup Sastry). Morgan actually was the touring Drummer for that album.
Back when this video first surfaced, I was enamored with how tasty those snare licks were, the ghost notes, the single hand rolls, the right hand hitting the snare and immediately afterwards hitting a cymbal. His coordination was so inspiring to me. Between Fredrick (guitarist), Morgan (Drummer), and Tomas Haake (drummer), I had inspirational leaders in their perspective instruments who paved a way for this type of extreme talent to be the spotlight and allow young creative minds venture into areas unexplored. In 1988, at the age of 20, Morgan Ågren was, along with Mats Öberg, invited by Frank Zappa to do a guest performance at Zappa's Stockholm concert. Impressed by Ågren's skills, Zappa invited Ågren to the States to partake in several projects, including the 1994 Grammy Award-winning CD Zappa's Universe with Steve Vai, as well as a sold out New York performance of Zappa's classical program at Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series in Avery Fisher Hall. Ågren also shares the drummer's seat with Terry Bozzio on Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's band AZ/DZ's album Shampoohorn. In 1996, Ågren toured throughout Europe as a member of Glenn Hughes's band, and later to Japan in 1997.
I was trying to remember where I'd heard Morgan Agren's name before; he played on Zappa's Universe, a live tribute for Zappa's 50th b-day. Fantastic performances, stage crammed w/talent, & a great live recording to boot.

Oh man, some good old Special Defects. This is always some amazing stuff. Fredrik from Meshuggah and Morgan Agren here first collaborated on a solo project of Fredrik's back in 1997. Riffs and drum patterns were borrowed and lifted to and from Meshuggah as well. Quite a trippy release.
Oh man, That is an oldie!! What an epic performance! Morgan was in the last band that toured with Devin Townsend. For the first time in Devin's career, he chose to forego having backing tracks and rely solely on the musicians on stage to make the songs work. He also had an improvisational segment in the middle of the show where Morgan would jam on a small contraption of a drum (name escapes me) Still sad I missed the show!

The TV show "Trum" was hilarious. Basically all I remember was Morgan showing some simple (ish) concepts and then playing Meshuggah or Captain Beefheart or the weird Zappa stuff XD I also remember a blind keyboardist as a guest but the name escapes me.
I don't know if it has been recommended to you, but the album Sol Niger Within is amazing. If we could have that album fully instrumental, it would be one of the greatest albums in music history.
there's a reason meshuggah is the godfathers of djent. those polyrhythms! not to mention thordenal has the high 3 strings taped off because who needs extra noise when you can dj0nt like that
Is an amazing drummer for sure!!!And has so much patience on this poor odd time Guitar section... OMG!It seems little like Thordental challenge him to play aside these riffs...
An oldie but a goodie. One of my favorite videos, and good god do I wish there was a better video quality out there. If you get a chance check out "The Chicken" recorded from the original content on this video with his band Mats and Morgan (?) i think it was called.
I agree with an old comment on the original video that says Fredrik looks like he's controlling Morgan with his brain. It' so funny when you watch it with that in mind.

The TV show "Trum" was hilarious. Basically all I remember was Morgan showing some simple (ish) concepts and then playing Meshuggah or Captain Beefheart or the weird Zappa stuff XD I also remember a blind keyboardist as a guest but the name escapes me.
Holy crap. What a TV show Christian!
Thanks Johan. I'll have to check him out also!
Mats! Och/and Morgan. Mats is the blind keyboardist.
I don't know if it has been recommended to you, but the album Sol Niger Within is amazing. If we could have that album fully instrumental, it would be one of the greatest albums in music history.
You mean you don't like the vocals?
This actually aired on national tv in my teens. Just as Meshuggah was starting to catch my focus. That was about 20-25 years ago...
Wow! Crazy they’ve been around that long! 🥁🙌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Meshuggah was formed in 1987.
I cannot describe what hearing this for the first time in 2001 was like. Already indoctrinated into Meshuggah this still blew me away.
Blows me away in 2021! Sooo good
there's a reason meshuggah is the godfathers of djent. those polyrhythms! not to mention thordenal has the high 3 strings taped off because who needs extra noise when you can dj0nt like that
When Max Cavallera went 3-string it was because he couldn't be bothered with technicalities, when Thordenal does it it's a statement of arts.
Well noted! 🥁🙌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums i see what you did there aha.
His last name is pronunciated "awe"gren, which is very fitting...😂
That’s true Simon! 🤯
I have have waited for this
Yes!!!! 🥁🙌
Is an amazing drummer for sure!!!And has so much patience on this poor odd time Guitar section... OMG!It seems little like Thordental challenge him to play aside these riffs...
Both monsters Stamatis!
An oldie but a goodie. One of my favorite videos, and good god do I wish there was a better video quality out there. If you get a chance check out "The Chicken" recorded from the original content on this video with his band Mats and Morgan (?) i think it was called.
Sounds awesome Joey!
At last Andrew.....an good reaction...🇸🇪...this one of the best on the "tube"...my opinion......🇸🇪🇳🇿
It’s great! 🥁🎶🙌💯
Check out Morgan on a recording he did w. Bill Laswell called Blixt. Wild!!!
Thanks for the tip
This is so badass, I just don't get / how he's not head banging right now 🔥
HAHA!
Yup this was a banger Dustin. Killer players
I agree with an old comment on the original video that says Fredrik looks like he's controlling Morgan with his brain. It' so funny when you watch it with that in mind.
Haha yup! 🥁💯🙌
Oooo clicked this one real fast haha
Yessss! 🥁👌
legends
Yup!
This video kicked my ass back than in 2002 or 2003... But I discovered Meshuggah way back later in 2011... Pity me!
This is super Robert
To say that this is an interesting piece of music is the best my feeble brain can come up with to describe this.
It’s a full blown dialogue between 2 great musos
