Two things: Yogev Gabay has absolutely amazing videos breaking down the rhythms in Meshuggah and explaining how even this monster of a track is actually in 4/4 :D This whole album was recorded live. If you listen to the soloed tracks of the drums or guitar you can hear the other instruments bleeding (hehe) in. These guys are insane
I think the fact it's on 4, like most of their other tracks, is what keeps them from sounding like a prog rock band. There is always that simple hidden element that is so easy to latch onto and enjoy even when on the surface it seems like absolute chaos.

A lot of people who hear Meshuggah for the first time say that same thing about the singer being a "safety net". The instruments are playing such odd patterns and many times the singer is the most obvious thing to lock in to to stay on beat because he sings to the underlying pulse that we all feel but struggle to count. That dude has a metronomic sense of the beat, the whole band does.
@derp derpin It’s cool considering they apparently don’t try writing in odd meters as much as it seems. The drums tend to be in 4/4 and the odd meter feel comes from the guitar and bass messing around with a lot of syncopation and polyrhythm that makes everything feel off. Really creative way of composing and still blows my mind how they’ve been able to create so much for so long with this method while consistently keeping things fresh and interesting.
@@jbasti227 Usually the kick drum, locked in with the guitars and bass are all playing an odd pattern while the hi hats or crash cymbal and snare play a 4/4. Or sometimes it's the ride/bell or china or even a floor tom for like "jungle" beats keeping a constant 1/4 or 1/8th note pulse with the snare hitting on the 2 and 4 but with an odd meter, maybe a 7/8 being played by the guitars, bass, and kick drum underneath. They play it a certain number of measures so that the odd pattern cycles through and the "1s" land back in sync to complete the section of the song. You can do math to figure out how many cycles of the odd pattern happen over the 4/4 cymbal/snare pattern before resolving and the "1s" lining back up, what's cool is that the effect these polyrhythms have when played together correctly makes something that sounds awesome too, it's not just like a bunch of random numbers of notes or like they just picked a time signature to play to like, say they did it such and such time sig or something. They do not sacrifice the natural feel and groove and awesome sound, like it has to sound good or they wouldn't do it. Like I said in another comment, the guitar solo section of this song(Clockworks) always makes me want to dance or move, or mosh and beat the shit out of someone, it's such a hard assed groove.
Thats funny, the vocalist was my big stumbling block to 'get into' meshuggah. His purpose is more of a rhythmic machine than anything else, much like the whole band really. I kept trying to make it something it wasn't for a long time.

What no one talks about is the outro - he is playing the ghost notes from the snare on the intro, but out loud, two handed, on the upper and side toms. But he's managing that two-handed rhythm with one hand, and switching between the ghost and hits on that one hand in the intro...

Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.
I'd say their sound is massive, if you listen to one of the guitars, especially live, it sounds like a blade's screech against a metal pipe. Meshuggah are the reason a lot of tech metal bands now try to keep the Gain lower and keep the low end in the pocket.
This whole album was recorded live in Puk Studios in Denmark, with huge stacks of amps and speakers. And they chose the tone combos that fit the songs best. The small documentary/interview on this is very interesting
Geebz: "too much caffeine? this looks like a good time to do some Meshuggah" Me:"pretty sure that's the worst time to listen to Shuggs lmaoooo" and the whole thing is in 4/4, but the groupings are in 2s and 3s. Yogev did a great video on it.
And yet, despite Yogev's excellent explanation, I still struggle to hear the 4/4 in this one. Like I know it is and how the riffs cycle and loop etc, but this is definitely one of the more difficult Meshuggah songs to feel it in. The accents and note lengths really throw it off-kilter to the point that I remember the riffs and whole sections and can hum them back to you like muscle memory, but if you asked me to write it down and count it out around 4, i'd be lost. This song is bananas even though it's just mostly 3s and 2s around 4/4.
I have only seen Meshuggah live twice. I tell you, price quality, it's probably the one of the best shows you can get. The sonic violence... it's raw power. Your blood starts to flow differently.
I've always wondered whether the drums in this track, in the way the bass and snare interlock, are deliberately composed to suggest the interlocking gears of a clock. Either way, that pattern is really unique and apt.
For me, clockwork, is like a baptisment into the world of meshuggas sound. When thomans starts digging, thats when u have hit the trance hard and it just keeps pulling you in harder and harder. And when it ends its like something really precious has been stolen from you and u cant get it back, but to listen to the song again. haha its so awesome :D
The vocals grounds the ear because we are attracted to the human element of the mix.The instrumental is chaotic and explosive. The voice is like a capable steed, galloping freely across the rocky terrain. The rider, the listeners, can ride atop the tumult beneath them with confidence.
It's this type of reaction I absolutely love. I have gained new insights on the song thanks to your knowledge, and seeing the nuances from your perspective. Like the sync change right in the middle of the breakdown, where the first half it was the guitar and kick drum together, and the second half was the guitar and snare. I knew that the change was awesome but I can't never put a finger on it. When you pointed it out I instantly went "OH SHXT YOU RIGHT!" I fukim love Clockworks. Good thing you're drinking coffee, because watching that drum cam is all the 'Shuggah you need.

MESHUGGAH is the absolute best, love to see your reactions to it! They also have a new album coming up, very excited for that. Keep it up man!
April 1st!
Grats on 100k Geebz, that was fast!
Also 10:20 every single time
I’ve been dealing with some heart problems recently and I can’t even listen to this song without breaks because of what it does to my heartbeat lol
How did he not mention how hard Thomas punished that snare?... amazing takes Geebz. Love the open minded approach! Always come back for the passionate intersections lol
Love this. So open minded, that’s a true musician.
Meshuggah’s music is stable instability, ordered chaos.
lol your basically tripping on coffee listening to meshuggah. good times.
HANDS DOWN, the best live band on the planet. It is a life changing experience! I have seen hundreds of bands live and they are BY FAR the best
I would also recommend the title track, "Born in Dissonance".
Friggin epic, too!
That was his first meshuggah reaction, look it up
I like MESHUGGAH with my coffee.
Messuggah *IS* my coffee
1 lumps or 2?
The guitar tone/style is so good, in fact, it started a whole genre: djent.
They straight up say they have nothing to do with djent.
@@Somethingnow1 they are being humble but all the 2010s djent bands were totally inspired by meshuggah
@@adamsylvan I honestly feel that the topic does them a disservice. They’ve influenced any band that’s listened to them. Misha ruined it for the rest of us. 🍤
This is one of my favorite Meshuggah songs by far. So glad to see you break this one down!
I love your videos so much!! Your Meshuggah and Tool reaction videos are definitely my favorites, thanks for sharing your knowledge!! You're a cool guy!! Greetings from Brazil!
I love watching your face at the beginning XD. I'm really trying to headbang, but they aren't making it easy. Your commentary is also really helpful to pick more things out of such an deep song.
"Obviously there's no ghost notes here" .. Liiiittle did he know that 20% of the notes are moeller ghosts due to the intensity of Tomas' playing lmao
If Haake was a ghost, he would appear in a more badass way than the prime Mike Tyson!
I came back just to say that this reaction and assessment was totally spot-on. Pleasure to watch.
Hello from France ! First of all thanks for the content, as an amateur musician I'm really learning a lot about what I missed for years about the engineering and mixing etc
Second, thanks for being so nice, pedagogical and interesting
Keep going mate, stay true you're really fucking great !!
(PS : Messhugah: Dancers To A Discordant System or Pravus are insane, you should try it !)
From Sweden here! I just love hearing and watching your thoughts and inputs on some of the most loved songs I have in my arsenal! Keep doing what you do! Love it! Loved the Opeth-videos btw! Keep rocking on!
Just closed out a graveyard shift. This upload was my coffee and second wind.
I'm still here!!!
Dude you’re everywhere !
@@skippityblippity8656 ...and I'm still here!
I just found your channel. I am from Finland and currently working in China. How random is this to find your channel and keep entertained for many evenings 8-) I guess this is the internet making the world a one big piece. Please keep making videos!
And by the way, it is evening time in Shanghai!
Jens and often the Hats are the grounding factor in their music. The fact that Jens can sing and sometimes plays guitar at the same time over this insanity is just mind blowing.
For someone who's 'CPU is running at 100', the things you said were spot on! Actually, you gave very valuable remarks on the composition. Finally someone who does!!! Thanks man :-)
Death Wish and Meshuggah late in the evening, absolute madman
Would LOVE to hear some Revocation!
The Watchers
The Outer Ones
Dismantle the Dictator
Summon the Spawn
Copernican Heresy
So many good tracks to choose from
Fathomless catacombs is another good one too!
Meh sugar! Lol I love your channel man, keep up the good times and good vibes! Aloha!
Whole lot of ghost notes in this. Watch his left hand
What no one talks about is the outro - he is playing the ghost notes from the snare on the intro, but out loud, two handed, on the upper and side toms. But he's managing that two-handed rhythm with one hand, and switching between the ghost and hits on that one hand in the intro...
If you have ghosts you have everything
I was going to recommend this but didn't think you would do it , shocked some one else did and glad you did it!
Fun fact: they recorded this album live so what you’re hearing is the band playing and recording together
Geebs, your analysis in this video is so spot on. Got so much out of it. Keep it up, my man. We're all watching and listening. Thank you!!
Mr bungle and than this . I feel spoiled
Travolta
I kept recommending this year's ago, glad to see you finally watched
This whole album was actually recorded live with the whole band. That's probably the reason it sounds more natural than some of their other stuff
Love watching you break these videos down, bruddah.
You really need to listen to "MGLA - Exercises In Futility V" drum cam of Darkside(the drummer)... he is a freak on the cymbals and it's unbelievable how musical he makes his playing.
Keep up the good work 🤘
that's the thing, why I love this song its all about the snare. I love your content the way you explain drumming and how bands work is just amazing. I love drumming so much, but I'm teaching myself and it can be very overwhelming and I get frustrated but the way you explain it just makes sense. I really enjoy your content.
Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.
Not only do I love your videos but man you're a hoot! Looking great as always!
I'd say their sound is massive, if you listen to one of the guitars, especially live, it sounds like a blade's screech against a metal pipe.
Meshuggah are the reason a lot of tech metal bands now try to keep the Gain lower and keep the low end in the pocket.
Aaah! Finally you did clockworks! Was waiting for this one.
Cheers from sweden,
This whole album was recorded live in Puk Studios in Denmark, with huge stacks of amps and speakers. And they chose the tone combos that fit the songs best. The small documentary/interview on this is very interesting
Cool break down.
Saw Meshuggah and Tool some years back, amazing concert.
Geebz: "too much caffeine? this looks like a good time to do some Meshuggah"
Me:"pretty sure that's the worst time to listen to Shuggs lmaoooo"
and the whole thing is in 4/4, but the groupings are in 2s and 3s. Yogev did a great video on it.
Thank you!!! For pointing this out! Meshuggah has always been mathematical ❤️
@@MattMcloughlin oh definitely, can’t nail the splits for the life of me during the going of a section lmao.
@@crispinmcsticks It is quite weird to nail it down but that’s why I call them mathematical
First time seeing a commentary from you. Great stuff!
/Meshuggah fan from Sweden 🇸🇪
Im digging the red eyes there mate
I would recommend Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution.
God tier musicianship and songwriting!!!
The vocals grounds the ear because we are attracted to the human element of the mix.The instrumental is chaotic and explosive. The voice is like a capable steed, galloping freely across the rocky terrain. The rider, the listeners, can ride atop the tumult beneath them with confidence.
if a composer looks like he’s in pain trying to find the time signature, you know you’re progressive metal
Oh man you've been busy this weekend! :D If you come back to Meshuggah, check Nostrum. Absolutely crazy track!
Regarding Clockworks: Yogev Gabay did an awesome breakdown of this track: ruclips.net/video/YwrSvpjdK-w/видео.html
Now time to check Dir En Grey - Vinushka ;)
Enjoy the coffee, but not in the evening, you'll never sleep otherwise. :D Cheers!
You're reaction is perfect to this video. You can literally watch your face melt.
Figuratively
@@Myfartslinger i said what i meant. it was a play on his "literally" in the video title and his facial expressions. i am aware of the difference between the two and i am not writing a thesis here, just having some fun with my favorite reaction/decomposing videos.
@@TheDjpressha I love you
@@Myfartslinger back atcha dude
It'd be cool to see your reaction to Blut Aus Nord. Another band that plays about with timing in interesting ways. I'd suggest Odinist or ...The Meditant (Dialogue with the Stars) or Epitome XVI.
Great stuff, more Meshuggah!!
Tons more of even more excellent tracks to delve into, which you may appreciate 👍
How about I buy you a couple edibles instead of cups of coffee. 😂
Grats on the 100k! This track is an absolute monster, my fave for sure. Been a Meshuggah head since the 90's.
Love your reactions! You should also react to Meshuggah - Dancers to a discordant system. That song is absolutely complex and amazing.
the best of all your meshuggah reactions. thank you very much
please try some extreme underground geniuses Ulcerate - Extinguished Light
Or Drawn into the Next void!!
By the way, I live in France and am used to strong coffee. And I can see by the golden froth of your cup that it is indeed Strong ! :) Thanks for the great review of one of my top Shuggah tunes!
DANCERS TO A DISCORDANT SYSTEM (LIVE OPHIDIAN TREK)!!!!!!!!!
At 10:32 that is the face of a man who anticipates the breakdown. I've watched a few of your metal videos and am grateful for your insight.
The word your looking for is anchor, maybe.
Meshuggah interesting composing and melodic rythm: Dancers To A Discordant System
Groovie Meshuggah with all of it: Do Not Look Down
Thank you for the reaction Geebz! we love you
