- It's finally here! My reaction and a breakdown to Tomas Haake's drum playthrough of Clockworks, from Meshuggah's 2016 album, The Violent Sleep of Reason. This song was my first time actually giving it a proper listen, because it has been so highly requested so I wanted to give an authentic first time reaction. I also attempt to breakdown what I observed with the music, and put it into a simple structure that is hopefully easy for most to understand. Meshuggah is essentially a jazz band. A very intense jazz band. Love it!
So correct. Tomas actually is grooving in the pocket and swinging. His ghost notes, accents, cymbal work and overall dynamics are jazz influenced. I would love to se Vinnie have a shot at a Meshuggah playthrough. Btw, I have seen them live twice. It time London Roundhouse 2012. Unbelievable. And their lighting rigg is the best I have ever seen. Like a 6th member. Totally in sync.
Jazz usually has harmony. Meshuggah is more like undulating microtonal frequencies. I would never relate Meshuggah to jazz in a moment.
@@enijize1234 you should really check out "Entertain me" by Tigran Hamasyan. It'll really change your mind on that. Tigran is a jazz composer and pianist, and a massive Meshuggah fan, and it really shows in this song lol
@@alihijazi4451 I love Tigran Hamasyan but just because he has some Meshuggah influence doesn't mean Meshuggah has influence from him, and even if Meshuggah did it doesn't make them jazz (maybe they play some drone Armenian Oud in a breakdown or coda a la Future Breed Machine). A's and B's and Logic and that. If crops only grow when the sun shines does that mean that the sun only shines when crops grow?
I mean look, at the end of the day its just art bullshit and perceptions. You call it muzzy wuzzy chim chum and I'll call it flam flum hugh mungus and it doesn't even matter. I'm just pointing out my unpopular opinion that generally Meshuggah is about as jazz as my morning visit to the porcelain office.
There's shit-all harmony.
Harmonically its like an undulating microtonal bass frequency- which I think is fking awesome because there's nothing else quite like it.
In my experience, the iconic Jazz sound whether Dixieland, Hard-Bop or Contemporary Fusion is all about extended harmonies, the 7's, 9's, 11's, 13's and altered extensions.
The most jazzy that Fredrik Thordendahl gets is in Zeta Reticuli 2 on the album Sol Niger Within.
ZR2 sounds like if you were listening to John Coltrane trippin balls on a kilo of mushrooms blastin through the Milky Way on the Millenium Falcon. Its the most frayed ends of experimental jazz they maybe stretch their arms out and tickle each others fingers for a second.
Still if I found Sol Niger Within in the jazz section of the music library I'd have a laugh and wonder what tripper was sorting out the music on that day.

I’m honestly stumped that you were able to point out so minute changes in the drumming that keeps the track interesting…as someone that has seen this play through many times it was gratifying to see you break this down in a simple but effective such that many more will be able to identify these subtle details…and finally…I do hope you will pull through whatever troubles currently you face….you seem like a very eloquent,humble and level headed person….and that must count for something…
Thanks so much for your words! When it comes to Meshuggah i tried a good while back to breakdown what i was hearing in a more metronomical and music theory kind of way. But then i realized (and people in my comments confirmed) that its better to just listen for patterns instead of trying to analyze things like time signatures etc. So that's why as soon as this song started playing i immediately just watched and listened for a structure pattern and it honestly helped me doing it that way instead.

Meshuggah really knows how to let those riffs just play out for extended periods. Most bands have some really cool riffs but they only last like 15 seconds. Love that about this band. And there is no one like Meshuggah's live performances with there light shows. Just insane
When you sit back with closed eyes and count their usual 4/4 underlay, that’s where you see their massive slow groove well defined. Then the appreciation gets way deeper because they unify in a 3D wave and pull, push, swell, punch like seawater.

One of my favorite things about this song is how the double kick in the verses sounds like a ticking clock almost.
I've managed to figure out certain parts of this song, and even if I can't play them I've learnt to hear the patterns almost. Credit to Yogev for explaining the intro but you're right when you said its groups of 3s and 2s, but if you break it up into those 3s and 2s visually you get:
33 2* 333 [2] 3(3)33 2 3
* this is a actually a quick triplet in the space of 2 16th notes
(3) this is where the accented long guitar note is
[2] this is where the pattern resets after 3 full repetitions
What's fucking confusing and what Tomas does best is that the polymetric way he plays it means that the pattern SOUNDS like it resets on the long note and tricks you into thinking it does because the same # of 3s follow it as the real beginning, up until the actual reset and then you realize he's thinking in 4d chess and the rest of us all are stuck doing checkers bc he's also keeping consistent time with the hat in the middle of all this.
The breakdown pattern is actual hella cool because the accented guitar notes where the double kick follows them actually increase in amount from 4 to 7 then reset each time. Next time you listen, count along with the accents on your hands and its both incredibly fun and immediately apparent.
As a side note, I'll never forget the first time I caught the patterns for the songs pravus and the hurt that finds you first by ear. Interestingly enough they share a similar pattern, since pravus' is 1-12-1-123, 1-12-1-1234 while the hurt that finds you first's opening pattern is similar to pravus' with 1-1-1-123, 1-1-1-1234 if you're only going by the accented hits, but in the verses is 1-1-12-1- 1-123, 1-1-12-1-1-1234.
God I feel like I just wrote a whole ass thesis at this point but the TL;DR is that every meshuggah song requires memorization of a unique pattern with a crap ton of small variances throughout the song, which means trying to learn each and every song is both a unique and involved process that really connects you to their writing and the song itself on a rhythmic level, which considering the fact that they typically play 10 or so songs a night when touring makes it that much more impressive.
EDIT: I can't recommend checking out Eloy Casagrande's cover of their song Marrow enough. Ghost note city once again but its much easier to follow for most of the song and the raw power he puts into the cover perfectly matches how brutal that song is.

Great reaction! All tracks that Dick and Tomas write are AMAZING. You should definitely check out the rest of Violent Sleep, the title track is one of my favorite tracks of all time. Phantoms and GHSIM are must listens from Dick and Tomas too.
Great reaction and incite on this playthrough. Their is Never a dull moment in Tomas's drumming. I really like the starting section of the track. And how it begins. The structure giving this build, while providing this kind of anticipation wondering when the next faze of the song is going to begin.💀🤘
Good morning from New England..I came across your channel when you did the Mario Duplantier reaction..I enjoyed your breakdown of how he takes bare bones rhythmic structures and builds the song around them.. He's great at foreshadowing how the songs are going to progress.. Now about Tomas..I've rarely seen a drummer so relaxed and in control of his facilities..Every beat has a purpose and is placed at the exact spot it needs to be... When it comes to getting a handle on the feel for complicated songs like this I focus on the cymbal work..Many times if it's in 4/4 you'll hear it in the cymbal patterns..Very cool vid man..Peace from the Northeast 🤘✌️

Meshuggah is too advanced to give an in-depth analysis on first listen. You would need to be some sort of musical prodigy to catch everything on the fly. Your reaction was great, I would be at a loss for words and just going "Thomas doing Thomas stuff".
Great ear! happy that you acknowledged the preparing transition to the breakdown. The sudden regularity in it, not only prepares for the breakdown, but gives a feeling of 'absolute determination'. It tosses all the chaos before it to say 'that's what we're doing now.'

I think my favorite part is during the verse when he's ultra focused on his right hand. It interests me because that hand is keeping time, it's his other 3 limbs doing stuff. It's a bit of a clue about how he's doing patterns; they're purely and entirely muscle memory. Just always amuses me that we're all so focused on the obvious things that make him talented, but that his focus is still on the thing that matters: time.

have you ever checked out troy wrights meshuggah drum medleys? he does 10-15 minute blasts through highlights of whole meshuggah records...and kicks ass while doing it.
I love Meshuggah man every single member of that band are absolutely insane musicians.
i`m not a musican nor do i have any solid grasp of musical theory. And i will admit that i listen to a lot of music that musicians would classify as difficult, like prog metal and what Meshuggah manages to do consistently blows my mind.

My favourite part about this song is how everything makes so much sense when you dig more into the patterns. For example, in the last half of the song (the breakdown so to speak) the pattern of 2s always alternate between the up beat and the down beat. The song is really complex but the grounds for each part is very simple, except maybe the intro/outro
Meshugga and Rush, or more specifically, Thomas and Neil, are and were masters of creating a lifeline or pulse in songs with different time signatures. They made it easy for everyone to rock out, whether you're a musician, a normie, or just a music nerd. It's a skill not many have. That's art right there. And mad skillballs. Next level, man.

Nice seeing someone do Clockworks. Everyone suggests Bleed, which is a great song, but it's really not that complex for a Haake tune.

Some of his ghost notes I believe are used for balance in his right hand. I’ve found myself doing that kinda subconsciously.when you’re playing busy music it’s hard for one of your limbs to go stagnant. It’s a flow with balance
Id been listening to meshuggah for years hyper analysing and trying to learn all their riffs detuning the fuck out of my light gauge stringed 6-string guitar.

If you pay close attention to this video there's several hits that happen that you dont hear or hits you hear but not see so this audio isn't from this video drum session he's just playing along. Case in point 11:10 theres a crash cymbal you hear but dont see then 11:15 you see him hit a crash but dont hear it. There's a couple others as well too these are just the first ones.

Meshuggah works on 2 levels for me: If I want I can try to break up the song in my head and learn some really cool stuff because of the extreme technicality of the songs. Then if I just let go of that and listen to the songs it´s a cathartic experience. It´s just unfiltered, raw emotion through and through and it usually calms me down and let´s me let go of some heavy shit that I´m sometimes dealing with. I could never listen to Meshuggah as background music, it´s always one of those 2 things for me. Some bands (not gonna name them since I do not want to start a flame war) just have the extreme level of technicality in their songs but otherwise the songs are complete duds that do nothing for me.

I personally love Straws Pulled at Random and I think it's the only song where Meshuggah actually uses a major scale, but I could be wrong tho. The final segment is astoundingly gorgeous. It's a whole feeling...
