Do you ever listen to some of these drummers and take techniques and try to incorporate into your playing?
I love how Tomas uses his left foot to "chirp" the high hats throughout the song to give additional texture and rhythm to the beat.
Never heard Meshuggah, doesn’t listen to metal, immediately gets the disgusted heavy face when you hear a brutal part of the song! Brutal Face it’s a thing!!
Yeah It's definitely a thing. It's called "bassface" or "grimeface" in electronic music genres :D
I just know of good ol' Stank-Face or, even defined by Meshuggah's very own Vocalisst Jens Kidman, Jens-Face :D
Stank face ftw!
Yes! Even non-metalheads can't help but get that "stank face" when the sonic brutality kicks in! haha
That part of the song just hits so hard. Sounds amazing
When Tomas is not slaying drums he fishes near his home in Sweden. No joke
Zen master!
Eyy another fisherman musician in metal. There's more than you'd think
@@blacksaltscotland The drummer from Barcode too.
He lives in Sweden now? He grew up in PA United States I heard. I heard he would practice so much his mom would often just end up bringing his dinner down to him and he’d eat off his snare drum.
@@larrytate1657 no he didn't..lol. He never lived in the US in Pennsylvania. You got lied to
Funny that you wore a jacket that says "Chile." Chile is renowned for having the best crowds at Meshuggah live shows.
MEH SHOO GAH! MEH SHOO GAH!
As a european I always wondered about this. In every metal comment section there is at least 1000 come to Brazil/Chile. I would not expect so many metalheads from Latin America
edit: There is a chilean (?) metal band with my username. They are quite good, even though I'm not quite into power/thrash metal
Leshuggah
@@Inferiis Dude, south america has always been a hotbed for metal and they are super passioned about it! The south american crowds are the best in the world, no doubt. Especially the Argentinean, they are fucking insane! The brazilians are amazing too. If you havent heard "Sepultura", I highy advise you to do so. One of the best trash metal bands ever.
Chile is home of under appreciated metal band Coprofago. Love those guys.
Wow, thats a really open minded response re the vocals in extreme metal.
Most people are like "Uggh, metal is shit because you can't understand what they're singing"
But like you rightly pointed out, the vocals go with the music, and yes you're right, the more you listen to the bands, the more you don't really notice it and it becomes the norm.
The vocals are an instrument in extreme metal. They're not used in the same way as 'normal' music vocalists. In metal, the instruments are the key focus, the vocals are kind of secondary.
Where as in popular music it's all about the vocalist.
It took me a little bit to get into metal with harsh vocals, then I realized the vocals add to the intensity of the song
God d e a mn you are perfectly right, for sure! Vocal in not the key, I love the music, guitar parts, drums and the vocal part is not so much for me...the same is Veil of maya for example, the first 3 albums
I like some metal, I love early slipknot, I don't know how Corey Taylor even has a voice left. But bands with these style of 'vocals' just sound horrible. It's boring, rote, no tone, no rhythm, illegible. As intricate as this drumming is, I can't even get through half a song. It sounds like they lazily spent about 6 seconds coming up with something for the vocalist to repetitively croak out. Some vocals DO add to the intensity even if you can't understand them - but this does not.
Exactly
@@chocolate_squiggle the vocals actually do have a very precise rhythm, and it weaves in and out of the underlying riff. So regardless of your opinion on whether they sound good or not (subjective, of course) it would be wrong to say that they haven't been carefully planned out
One of the best drummers ever. Even Danny Carey looks up to and appreciates Tomas talents
Killer Danny!
As a metalhead, I totally agree with what you said about the vocals in metal being a "barrier". I had to overcome that barrier myself, but as a Meshuggah fan, I can tell you their vocals are ANOTHER barrier, even within the metal community!
React to Tomas Haake's
"The Demon's Name is Surveillance"
"Bleed"
Too good. He is also the lyricist of the band.
Johann Rajan Wut??
Yeah. You heard me right.
@@johannrajan6357 I mean, he writes most of the songs, but is not the singer (that's a guy called Jens Kidman) , but that's prob what you meant?
Or Born in Dissonance.
Also, that's the English language for ya. Singer is used for the person that sings. Lyricist is someone who writes or composes the lyrics of the song. Technically, he was correct in his statement
I stand corrected. I thought you were saying he was the singer. My apologies.
As a non-drummer who actually wanted to try learning drums about 40 years ago.. watching the drumcam is almost hypnotic.. trying to match the movements to the rhythm in real time. That man has such talent and we are blessed to have him in the industry.
I love how much Meshuggah makes people smile when it clicks. No pun intended for you drummers!
gotta smile!
Super cool channel you are running here Andrew. A big thumbs up from Denmark.
If you are interested in other "above the average" drummers, here is a little list that you might like:
Morgan Aagren (Swedish "fusion-prog-jazz-rock drummer" - extremely skilled. The obvious one would probably be "Sol Niger Within" where he is playing metal. That one is crazy.)
Bobby Jarzombek ("Peppered Cancer" would be a good choice)
Gavin Harrison ("Threatening War" an easy listening little melodi)
Marco Minnemann (tons of good videos with him out there)
Gene Hoglan ("Skeksis" from his time in Strapping Young Lad)
Matt Halpern and Matt Garska (Super and technically prolificient groovy metal drummers)
Props on your excellent cup holding technique.
I don't know if you've checked him, but you should see some Aric Improta drum playthrough of Night Verses and Brann Dailor from Mastodon.
Meshuggah was the only band I ever went crowd surfing
React also to "Nostrum" there is a drum cam for it, another great drum play by Haake
I have a strong suspicion you would really get into INTRONAUT. Lots of complicated polyrhythms. The drum-intensive song I'd introduce you to is called DIGITAL GERRYMANDERING. Musically, they're closer to Tool than Meshuggah.
AHH-HAH!! Sorry man I didn't see it up there on you channel. Had to go looking for it.
All good Richard! Hope you dig it brother!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Curious. Have you seen Krimhs "Eldvag? The 2015 version at Meinl fest. Or Mario Duplantier's "Minitaur" solo. Both of these guy are pure heavy metal drumers but they both are talented enough to cross genres because, bottom line theyr're just fun to watch.I don't think either one of these guys would have been they drummers they are today without John Bonham. Both hit as hard as any drummer in the game but it comes of smooth as ice.
Again, your reactions are awesome! You've got a new sub here. I like that you're not a metal person but you can absolutely appreciate and love what he's doing - I wish more people were as open minded as you are. And I can't believe you've had Jamie from Ulcerate on twice! That man is amazing as well. And you're right - the vocals are the barrier, absolutely. I tend to look at them as just another instrument as opposed to as in pop/rap/country when it's actually the voice you're focusing on. Keep doing what you're doing, friend!
Thanks Justin.
Yes Jamie is awesome. Hope to have him on the podcast again!
Yeaaah i love meshuggah :3
GREAT!
Can you please do Matt Thompson (King Diamond) - Welcome Home drum cam?
Meshuggah bar none is the best current live show out there. The performance, the intensity, and the light show all come together seamlessly.
Tomas is a fucking BEAST!
The multi rythmic wall he build is a School tô modern metal.
You need to do some Keith Moon. Live from Isle of Wight. Young Man Blues
So fucking technical.
I love Meshuguh and Thomas Hakke ( Hackey) is a beast. His timing is incredible and his time signatures are difficult.
You should check out his playthrough of the song Nostrum too
Frank frallan Nilsson - The Real Deal Frank is another great swedish drummer that deserves alot more attention aswell.. Lots of great videos on his channel!
I wonder if he is a Jazz drummer as I have seen his skillz when younger!!! WHOA!! There's some isol8ed drums!? Hmmm...
If you don't like the music here you might listen to Morgan Agren. He comes from the same small place in northern Sweden as Haake and Haake couldn't train drums as a kid because the local teacher had a unicum already named Morgan.😒 He has played with Frank Zappa as a kid with a blind keyboard player all his life but nowadays he he has made music with Devin Townsend.
He is a free spirit and plays groove and you name it.
Look up Morgan Ågren Fredrik Thordendal Sol Niger Within, in high quality 👍for example or something more playful Morgan Plays the Archipelago. I think that's the name.

Yo Andrew, cool video. Meshuggah is my favorite band but the albums became too technical for my non-musician brain. The older albums are a lot less mono-tone and more interesting, I think. You should listen to these 2 albums; first listen to "Destroy Erase Improve" a 1000x before you listen to following album "Chaosphere". The vocals are a bit less extreme and more different parts in 1 song. These albums are really fantastic but you need to force yourself to listen to them in the beginning. It's great air guitaring / drumming along with these songs! Tell me what you think of "Destroy Erase Improve" after listing to it 10x! Enjoy!
Don't feel bad mate, I'm and American pro level metal guitarist and these guys fascinate me to watch but, to play or listen to honestly BORE ME TO DEATH. Their song Bleed is even more amazing, but also like going into a machine shop to listen to punch press run haha. And as a song writer the more a metal band repeats, or only slightly changes tempo, if the intensity is always high, it loses intensity!...the listenr gets used to it, and bored. If you go from a slow power groove riff and then shift into a fast thrash part it grabs the audience MUCH more. I can't imagine a Messugga concert were the crowd moshes much....probably odd head bopping and confusion over timing changes hahaha. Truly a band for other bands to study and pull out some Intensity and technical ability...I can't listen to an album....I'm almost instantly zzzzz, not at all critical of the band, just not personally for me. The singer it's the stand out amazing part for me, a band like Fear Factory is an example of groves and timing changes the keep the listener happy checking out, obsolete, shock demanufactured, by the band Fear Factory very interesting drumming...they kind of started a trend in drumming.
I'm pretty sure Haake is a cyborg.

DO NOSTRUM DRUM CAM
Thanks for the tip!
tumas hoke.....greetings from Spain....
The key to understanding Meshuggah's vocals, at least, is that, like the guitars, it's treated more as a percussive, rhythmic instrument.
Yeah Man. I totally get that!
don't know the name of the singer, but he's the reason i can't listen very long to meshuggah. It may be ritmic but it's sounds awfull
@@aaohknsn it's an aquired taste but it's beautiful. it's not awful. once you get into meshuggah and their technicality, everything else sounds like such basic music.
Jens Kidman is one of the best Heavy Metal "singers" ever in my opinion. Absolutely no compromises, no dynamics, no clean parts, no loud/quiet parts, no low or high parts, just "in your face" all the time, but with an impressive and matchless rhythmical precision, like said before, like an instrument or like a part of the drumset. He has so much unhuman energy and a very individual kind of heavy metal "singing" in comparison to other metal vocalists. Absolut outstanding, and beside that, a very funny and sympathic person.
I totally respect the guy's talent and musicianship, but this type of vocals is a major turn off for me. It's a shame too because I love this type of drumming/guitar/bass! I've tried and tried but I just can't dig it.
Finally someone doing a song other than “Bleed.”
Finally someone said it 😂😂
The reason why I clicked the video
He reacts to Bleed as well :D
Ms. Norton same lol
Other Meshuggah songs exist? You don’t say.
Fun fact: during their live shows, they have a light guy who literally pushes buttons in sync with the music to control the lights, rather than programming the light to the click tracks or something. At least that's what they've been doing. They're an incredible band to watch live and even more intense than what you saw in this video!
Thanks for the reminder. A few people did mention this. I need to check it out
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yeah there are videos, it's pretty insane. Heard about it after a show in their hometown up north here in Sweden, where I also caught Haake's drumstick. That fact blew me away. Great night, great band!
Just in case you didn't already think Tomas was talented enough, he writes the majority of Meshuggah's lyrics. He also writes some of the guitar riffs using recording software and samples and stuff like that and he once built a bass guitar from scratch even though he has absolutely no idea of how to play a bass guitar.
Basically he is an absolute legend, hahaha.
Bro he did so much that he can retire now and no one would dare to say anything lol
i wouldn't call the lyricist 'talented'. ever.
@@cliveramsbotty6077 are you mad. It's poetry
@@cliveramsbotty6077 Sorry dude, that's a pretty ignorant comment...
@@MickH60 explain 'ignorant'
I’m sure Thomas Haake has a different brain for each limb. His talent and ability are just out of this world. The worst part is how easy he makes it look
Well said. How he seperates the paths in his brain is alien.
When he played bleed at the show he looked like he was waiting for the bus.
He’s like an octopus 😂. I was just thinking this as well, I can’t believe how he can keep all four limbs in completely different patterns simultaneously, and not ever miss a beat by a microsecond. He’s a savant
He’s a killer drummer.
Not enough people in the world appreciate how insane metal is, the skill required to play this kinda of stuff is crazy.
Well,to be fair this isn't metal, its fucking Meshuggah!! I do understand your point but there are lots and lots of boring drummers in metal like in any other genre.
@@andrepereira744 Metal has a higher skill floor than any other genre in general. Even beginner pop-metal like Asking Alexandria requires more effort than other beginner level songs in other genres besides jazz, maybe.
the conditioning on top of the skill. like dude has cardio for fucking days. never skips leg day.
@@MrCholoPants3415 Their drummer is the most talented musician of the band too !
@@MrCholoPants3415 AA's drummer is really good. It's kind of sad how held back he is. However, the self titled album has really fun drum tracks.
You should do animals as leaders drummer Matt garstka playing ectogenesis.
Or the brain dance
Or a song he would actually enjoy without being a total proghead 🙄
My thoughts exactly.
Arithmophobia
Lippincott has one of the best fills ever in his playthrough
That 4/4 hi-hat portion is like a solid foundation, and the polyrhythms are like a gothic/lovecraftian cathedral built on top of it. Incredible.
I agree with everybody that suggests that you should react to The Legendary Bleed but god damn Clockworks tramples Bleed from an overall drumming point of view.
Absolutely. Bleed is awesome but there's other masterpieces too.
Yeah Bleed is incredible from a performance point of view and it's more immediately accessible, but Clockworks is just such a complex piece of work even though it might seem less flashy.
Bleed draws new fans in, clockworks keeps them there
Bleed is the hardest on your legs, Clockworks is hard on your brain
Bleed is a gateway drug, Clockworks is the true hard stuff.
Loved the calm insightful reaction. Respect for someone not used to this music. As a long time Meshuggah fan, while MANY will recommend you the infamous ‘stamina miracle’ Bleed, I’d personally say check out Dancers to a Discordant System. It highlights one of Thomas’ absolute strengths: slower cyclical grooves that are downright danceable. I’ve met them and ‘groove metal’ is a description they gave their blessing, rather than ‘math metal’ which they dislike, meshuggah’s all about feel, not calculating.
iconic ‘old’ gems that highlights the same groovey quality of Thomas are New Millenium Cynanide Christ and Rational Gaze. They started out as more thrashy and every album explores their trendsetting 8string guitar sound in a new way.
On a sidenote: thomas also writes the lyrics and they have fantastic ones. Meshuggah’s worth delving into, have fun!
Silrian777 I liked the fact that he wasn’t talking over 90% of the video
Math Rock is a genre children gave to prog.. It's just prog metal
Yes do dancers next its next level
Also back the dancers comment, outstanding track overall and maybe even a touch more accessible than clockworks... just... what a privilege to witness this kind of talent in action, joyous
Kjær Dían agreed, it’s amazing. Also yeah I thinks Dancers is rhythmically more accessible, though maybe melodically less? Idk about the latter, but seeing as this is about drumming, who cares, lol.
I love how he swings his ghost notes with more velocity than a lot of drummers power strokes!
HAHA Yup!
At that point ARE they ghost notes then? 🤔
@@Metguy123 If the accents are louder, then yes!
The key to greatness of Tomas Haake is its all polyrhythms, yet his right hand hi-hats always stay in 4/4 so you can still headbang to it. that right hand is as solid as a rock.
Polymeters mostly. Sometimes polyrhythms.
"trying to play that every night ..." bro watch him play BLEED live at even higher tempo than the album. it's absolutely mental.
it is said that Tomas Haake took up drums because he thought drum machines weren't precise enough
BurghezulDjentilom, if that’s true: holy crap. Tomas Haake ain’t human.

Tomas Haake is only known for Meshuggah. He is also the lyricist in Meshuggah, like Neil Peart was in Rush. You should check out Nostrum from the same album as Clockworks. It is truly a drum masterpiece.
In fact, we may all remember the first initial album snippets from Tomas. What would be known as Nostrum sounded like absolute madness when the parts were isolated. End product? Possibly the top track on the album outside Clockworks.
I saw Tool and Meshuggah on tour years ago. Danny and Tomas just put on such a master class that night.
Lucky you. I saw Tool on the Lateralus tour too, but missed the mighty Meshuggah. Tomahawk opened at our show. Been a Meshuggah fan for about 20 years. Never saw them live. That has to change.

Danny has said he asked to bring Meshuggah on tour so that he could study what Haake does every night.
@@danmarshall5895
Theres no doubt about that. If you've ever seen Tool live, you can see Haakes' influence in the way Carey has played since Lateralus. They're both f'n amazing.
Meshuggah is a hard listen, not because they're bad, they are definitely not. They're a great band and their compositions are really out there, but it's not something you can expect anyone to like on their first few listens. Their music is so sharp, brutal and in your face that it takes time for their compositional patterns to appear in your head as you listen.
You're so right. I was overwhelmed when I heard Meshuggah in the early 2000s. I was intrigued at first and thought wow, this is Metal on a whole other level. Took me a little bit but after a few listens, I was hooked. 20 years later I'm still in awe of their awesomeness.
@@rubaidaallen2764 Same here. I heard bleed and thought it was ok and then didn't listen to them for years. But then I heard clockworks and something clicked. Now their best song is all their songs. I find peace in the comfort of their music.
I can honestly say, since digging more deeply into Meshuggah, I’ve become more close minded with other music because they are on such an insane level, and so atypical, it makes other decent metal bands just sound basic.
even if you don't react to this, you should watch it.. 66Samus - "Hear Me" (Devin Townsend drums).
Samus - awesome drummer with the most bloody awful sounding sampled triggered kit...
@@richardharrold9736 You'll have to excuse my ignorance on this topic but are you referring to the "real world" drum sounding worse from the sampled recorded version? Like the sonic separation of kick and snare? If so doesn't this have alot to do with actual "room" you are playing in such as a hall or venue of some type? I'm very uneducated on the pros and cons of sampling kits, as this video in particular sounded extremely full and well rounded.
@@annihilatedcanadian6506 basically, every single drum on that kit is triggered, and he mostly uses stock heavily gated trigger sounds with no dynamics or anything, which is why it always sounds so bloody flat... whereas, among RUclips drummers, Meytal Cohen has an amazing natural-sounding kit that's properly miced to sound as good as possible.
@@richardharrold9736 So on the album "Empath" Devin hired a couple drummers, one being 66Samus and the other being Anup Sastry. I just watched the "Hear Me" playthrough, then went and watched the Anup Sastry playthrough of "Singularity" on the same album and Sastry's kit does indeed sound snappier and crisper. After you pointed out the sampling, I did noticed the drums having a sort of flatter, (for lack of a better term) even sound. As a casual observer I didn't pick up on that at all. I just presumed that "Hear Me' was in fact recorded in a more muted tone to set them into the background a little more as to not over power the music. I hope I made a little sense there.
@@richardharrold9736 agreed. However, he's addressed the use of samples as a necessity - he simply doesn't have the time to edit his drums every time, and he does online lessons on another kit which uses most of the mics he has. It's one thing to make time for editing if the mics are placed well from the beginning, but having to move them between kits that much is just too much time.

The thing I like about these reaction videos is how many of them say they’ve never listened to metal and how much they enjoy it.
I’m a 55 yr old man and pretty much only listen to metal, so much of it that my son since he was born (1999) has had to listen to it while strapped in his car seat and now blows my mind with his metal guitar abilities.

Incredible musicianship from Meshuggah. There was a part of guitar weird tones coming in and my body eargasmed with instense chill for good 10-15 seconds :D Awesome music
The coolest thing about their music is, if you follow his right, most of it can be counted in 4/4.
Sure, the basic line is mostly 4/4. But on top of that there is different patterns like 13. Plus the bass drum can be in it's own something like 21 or 25 counts. So different brain for every limb is close to the truth!

@@daviddevilliers2828 Yes, been following Yogev for a while. Also did some 8 years of private lessons from a drummer who has different brains for every limb. And that's an understatement. I don't know if anyone else in the world can do that?
I appreciate this dude being legit instead of trying to stop every 10 seconds and explain it how he likes whatever, this is badass the kind of music you just shut up and listen to
Thanks Dustin!
Danny Carey, Brann Dailor and Tomas Haake. 'Nuff said.
The holy trinity
But but but, what about Lars Ulrich? =D
@@GAIS414
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you're funny. Seriously though Lars isn't that awful. I've seen the mighty Metallica live a few times and I have to say he's alright. He's no where near as F'N AWESOME as the holy trinity, but he's alright in my book.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums
Yup yup 🤘🤘
@@GAIS414 ..... and AND don´t forget Kai Hahto or Gee Anzalone
Holy crap.
You're the first english speaking RUclipsr I've ever heard pronounce a double a correctly!
Yesssss!
I guess I've unknowingly been in rare company then.
The guy from loudwire who interviewed him for "fact or fiction" also got it right, well Tomas said so after he introduced him... ;)
Hey guys! As a way to prioritize the amount of reaction requests I'm getting via email/instagram and in the RUclips comments...
I am going to try and do the Patron picks first. There is no limit on the Patreon (could be $1/month).

I still love you if you are NOT a patreon contributor. And I will still try and get to your pick. It's a just a 'Thank You' to those that help out with costs/time involved with doing the vids.
Also going to have polls on there so you can vote for what you want to hear/see.
Disclaimer: No guarantees. I can only do what I can do. If a vid is blocked... it's blocked. I'll do my best!
It took me about 15 years to really get into harder vocals than Pantera. Then it just happened. Meshuggah is not the place to start though - I felt the exact same way.
Meshuggah - Bleed
And then play it for us...
at least the main 4/4 drum bass pattern
I'm a guitarist that started on piano and then drums. I have played music for over 35 years and I primarily play progressive death metal on guitar nowadays. I typically play for at least an hour a day.
I can play bleed on guitar for about 45 secs before I lose it. That's how ridiculous that song is.
This is what algebraic equations sounds like haha!
Fun fact, Meshuggah tracked this album live in the studio. All members played at the same time and kept their best takes.
I highly recommend checking out the drummer for Car Bomb. He does essentially the exact opposite thing from Tomas. Tomas plays over the bar line phrases while maintaining 4/4. Elliot Hoffman and Car Bomb actually practice extensively by watching each other because they use extremely odd phrases and time signatures without a steady tempo throughout the song. The band has said they have to watch each other and learn how to feel the quick note rate changes and time signature changes. Definitely check it out
I would also reccomend Frontierer..
Yeah car bomb are probably my fave band at the mo. Superb
Tomas Haake has a totally unique playing style, is a legend in the metal scene and it's always great to see new people exposed to the band. Doing it with a cup of tea in your hand is top class :D If I recall from an interview, the left hi-hat is mostly played with his foot though I have seen him play it with sticks a few rare times. If you like this, check out Elliot Hoffman and Carbomb. I recommend the tune "Black Blood".
So, I advise you rename this video "man tries to hold a full cup of coffee while watching a meshuggah drumming video without spilling it".
Let me know once the clicks start raining in.
HAHA!
Nostrum from the same album is also crazy!
check out the bleed drum cam next! Its awesome.
Already on it my Man!
Also worth bearing in mind that bleed is normally the last song on a 90ish minute set... Madness.
React to dan presland “and plague flowers the kaleidoscope”
This is a great reccomendation
Oh god yes
Just when you think you know drumming you see Thomas and you feel like someone from the Victorian times who’s been handed a smartphone.
You don't listen to this genre, yet you're all smiles at the skill involved. Subscribed.
If you want another Meshuggah song that has exceptionally creative drumming, I highly recommend dancers to a discordant system. Not quite as fast-paced or hardcore as clockworks. But it's certainly a worthy choice for lesson number two.
“just joking i don’t have linked in” 😆
BAHAHAHA
I bet Tomas is never late for any party, event, etc.
He's always on time....
Sorry.
STOP IT
I don't think there's any words to describe exactly what Tomas plays. He's in a completely different realm of existence behind a kit. An absolute joy to watch and listen to.
All those things you said the song was doing to you are all the reasons I have gone back to metal over and over and over again over the last three decades. Just when I think it isn't going to show me anything new I stumble across something that blows my mind
That guitar solo is one of the craziest I've ever heard. Can't believe I haven't heard this before.

Yup it's great!
